The CW veteran Kevin Levy is stepping down from his role as EVP, Program Planning, Scheduling and Acquisitions on August 1.
A CW original who joined the network at launch in 2006, Levy was promoted to his most recent role in 2018.
A 25-year scheduling veteran, Levy was named SVP Program Planning and Scheduling for the CW in 2014. He joined as Director of Program Planning and Scheduling and was promoted to VP in 2007. His key acquisitions for the net included Penn & Tell: Fool Us and adventure series The Outpost. Levy transitioned to the CW from Upn, where he began his television career in 1998 as an assistant in the scheduling department. During his tenure there he helped launch shows such as America’s Next Top Model, Veronica Mars and Everybody Hates Chris.
As EVP, Levy oversees the strategic planning and scheduling of all network programming and is responsible for the acquisitions of movies, specials and series.

The Nexstar-ization of The CW is nearly complete.
Kevin Levy, the exec vp program planning, scheduling and acquisitions, will leave the broadcast network on Aug. 1. Levy had been with The CW since it was launched in 2006 and had been among the last remaining executives from the network’s Mark Pedowitz regime. Pedowitz, and all of his top lieutenants, have systematically been pushed out at the network since station group Nexstar took over a 75 percent controlling stake of The CW in October.
Brad Schwartz, The CW’s president of entertainment, announced Levy’s departure in a memo to staff Tuesday. (Read it in full, below.) “Now that the hard transition work is done, he is ready for his next adventure. We want to thank Kevin for his immeasurable contributions to The CW. Exclusive: Cyle Zezo, who oversaw alternative programming at The CW, is leaving the broadcaster.
Zezo, who was VP, and Head of Alternative and Digital Programming, is leaving after having spent nine years at the network.
His departure was somewhat expected after former NBCUniversal exec Heather Olander was hired to head up the CW’s push into non-scripted programming. Zezo is expected to move into production.
“Cyle is following his passion to be a producer,” a spokeswoman for The CW told Deadline. “He will continue to executive produce many unscripted shows for The CW and we look forward to continuing to work with him.”
Before The CW was acquired by Nexstar and brought in former Pop TV chief Brad Schwartz as President of Entertainment, Zezo worked closely with Gaye Hirsch, who was EVP Development and left as part of a round of layoffs in February.

Further to Nexstar Media Group, Inc. acquiring a 75 ownership interest in The CW Network, LLC (aka The CW), the TV network reported 100 million in losses, canceled numerous series and fired longtime president Mark Pedowitz, finance chief Mitch Nedick and chief branding Officer Rick Haskins, seemingly signalling the end of producer Greg Berlanti's 'gay-tv' push, that encouraged writers to groom popular DC Comics' superheroes into woke 'Lqbtq' characters:
Also let go from The CW were Gaye Hirsch, the network's EVP of Development and Michael Roberts, EVP of Current Programming.
The CW's recently canceled TV series include "Supergirl", "Naomi", "Batwoman", "Legends of Tomorrow", "In the Dark", the "Vampire Diaries" spinoff "Legacies", as well as the network's reboots of "Charmed", "Dynasty", "4400" and "Roswell, New Mexico".

In what appears to be a new wave of layoffs, several senior scripted executives have left the broadcast network, including Gaye Hirsch, EVP, Development, who is departing after more than 15 years, and fellow CW veteran and head of department, Michael Roberts, who had been at the network (and its predecessor the WB) for 21 years, sources tell deadline.
Also said to be leaving alongside Hirsch and Roberts are Ellen Rand, SVP of Current Programming and Steve Tao, VP, Current Programming, I hear. The full extent of layoffs is unclear. Reps for the CW did not return calls and emails seeking comment.
The high-profile departures come three months after new CW owner, Nexstar, named former Pop TV topper Brad Schwartz as President of Entertainment.

The CW, in its latest shift away from scripted originals, is dismantling its current programming department.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that exec vp current programming Michael Roberts and exec vp development Gaye Hirsch — two of The CW’s remaining most important scripted executives — are among those who were let go Thursday. An exact headcount was not immediately available, though sources say others were impacted by the layoffs.
While losing the heads of current and development are a big blow to The CW’s efforts to continue making scripted originals, this is not a complete dismantling of its scripted executives as sources say some lower-level staffers — i.e., those with smaller salaries — are being retained.
Reps for The CW did not respond to THR’s multiple requests for comment.

Exclusive: The new iteration of The CW is starting to take shape.
Two and a half months after Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in the broadcaster, the new owners are starting to make moves that will determine its programming mix and who will be leading this charge.
Chief among these include the search for a top programming executive, a re-tooling of its scripted lineup and a drive to greenlight more unscripted formats.
This comes after a major round of layoffs at the company as well as the departure of long-term execs such as streaming and branding chief Rick Haskins, ad chief Mitch Nedick and comms chief Paul Hewitt.
Earlier this month, Dennis Miller was named President of The CW Network, replacing Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. Deadline understands that he has been leading a search for a programming boss with executives such as former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz...

The CW is hunting for the Legends of the Hidden Temple after ordering a reboot of the classic Nickelodeon adventure format. This comes after the series was previously set to be rebooted by the short-lived short-form service Quibi.
The reboot will be produced by Stone & Company, which produced the original series that ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons between 1993-1995.
The adult version will preserve many of the original show including Olmec, the giant talking Mayan head, the Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge and the Temple Run as well as the team names such as Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys.
However, this version will be taken out of the studio and scaled up with tougher challenges and bigger prizes as the contestants find their way through the “jungle.”

The leaders of Women in Film knew they had to do something different with its annual fundraiser in 2020. But they had no idea their brainstorming would lead to the organization’s first TV special, “Women in Film Presents: Make It Work,” which airs Wednesday on the CW.

As you may recall, the Bfca and Btja experimented with an earlier award event last year. While I think that was an interesting idea, and probably a good one, it made for a rough effort when it came to getting to view every movie that came out during the year. Among other things, it resulted in a strange, and not entirely popular, shift in the nominees when it came to the Star Wars franchise. At any rate, the event is now back to its normal window of time, and back to The CW as home. Further information about the show, including host/s and presenters will surely be coming soon,...

When ABC revealed that “Black-ish” would have a spinoff, sister network Freeform raced to sign the series up. For Freeform, “Grown-ish” would hit all the right notes — it came with a proven pedigree in creator Kenya Barris, and even more important, featured a young, diverse cast.
The decision was a wise one, indeed. “We chased the show that became ‘Grown-ish’ because we very much wanted a diverse comedy on our slate, and who better to partner with than Kenya?” explains Freeform exec VP, programming and development, Karey Burke. “It very quickly drew new viewers to our channel and ‘Siren,’ which follows it, has a more diverse audience than ever.”

As the #MeToo movement sweeps through Hollywood, there’s been plenty of talk about how people want to support women — that they absolutely value women’s voices and hope more can be heard to even out decades of inequality. Less clear than the requisite blanket outrage, however, is what Hollywood is actually doing to address the more entrenched practices within the system that have contributed to rampant, stubborn inequity — particularly behind the scenes, where so many crucial decisions get made.
In the TV industry, some of the most influential positions lie in producing, directing and showrunning. But according to a Mount Saint Mary’s University study, only 30% of these key creative positions were held by women in the 2016-17 season; worse still, only 11% of showrunners overall were women, and only 2% of them were women of color. There is certainly no shortage of familiar titles returning to television these days, but while some return as revivals with original casts, settings and storylines intact, others are instead rebooted, drawing on the existing intellectual property and name brand but creating new characters, relationships and worlds for them to inhabit. In an increasingly competitive landscape, any show that comes from existing intellectual property can mean a built-in audience to aid in ratings, but also pre-set expectations.
“It’s stressful to be alive in America in 2018 for a lot of people, and there’s something appealing about the familiar,” says David Kohan, who co-created “Will & Grace,” which was revived last fall. “It’s something comforting because you know their voices, you know these characters, you know where they stand.”
Kohan and fellow co-creator Max Mutchnick reunited their long-running 1990s NBC sitcom in 2016 with a special election video featuring all four members of their original cast.

After jumping ahead of much of the awards season fray for their 2016 awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (Btja) have now officially moved their annual awards ceremony back to the mid-January slot it for so long occupied. Last year, the Critics’ Choice Awards took place on December 11, a very early date that may have given the ceremony a jump on their competitors, but left some members scrambling to watch all of the year’s movies and series in time for voting. This year, things go back to relative normal.
The 23rd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards will take place on January 11, 2018. The show will continue its combined Film and Television awards format, honoring the finest in both cinematic and televised/streaming achievement, and take place once again at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

Paramount Pictures has acquired feature film rights to Erik Larson's book The Devil in White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, with Kathryn Bigelow attached to direct and produce with studio-based C/W Prods. Scribe Chris Kyle will adapt the book, which is the fact-based account of two men -- one an architect, the other a serial killer named H.H. Holmes -- who turned the 1893 Chicago World's Fair into their playground. The book hit the shelves in February and made it to the New York Times best-seller list shortly thereafter. Bigelow will produce through her Paramount-based First Light Inc. along with Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner's C/W. At C/W, the project will be shepherded by Gaye Hirsch, and at the studio, it will be overseen by production executive Brian Witten. Larson was repped in the deal by Paradigm and New York-based literary agent David Black. He previously penned Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time and the Deadliest Hurricane in History and Lethal Passage: The Story of a Gun. Bigelow is repped by CAA and the law firm Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Sloan & Richman. She previously helmed K-19: The Widowmaker for Paramount. Kyle is repped by CAA and attorneys Ira Schreck and James Adams. He previously penned K-19 and, more recently, Alexander for Oliver Stone.
