Costume Designers Guild Awards: ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ & ‘Saltburn’ Take Film Prizes – Winners List
Barbie, Poor Things and Saltburn took the top film prizes at the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddingham won for Period Film, and Saltburn‘s Sophie Canale took Contemporary Film. The night’s first film prize went to last year’s biggest film, with Jacqueline Durran winning for Barbie.
Waddingham and Durran also are up for the Best Costume Design Oscar, vying against Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and Oppenheimer.
Since the guild launched its awards show in 1999, the Academy Award for Costume Design has gone to a period film every year but thrice, with only Mad Max: Fury Road (2016), Black Panther (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023) bucking the trend.

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.
The costume designers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.
Notably missing from the lineup were the costume designers behind “The Color Purple,” “Wonka” and “Ferrari.”
Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been an Oscars frontrunner for costume with Jacqueline Durran’s designs translating from the big screen into mainstream when the film became a cultural phenomenon last summer. Thousands emulated Beach Barbie and Ken looks as they showed up at movie theaters in various shades of pink. For the film, Durran created hundreds of looks for the various Barbies and Kens.

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

Back in person after the pandemic, the awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Andrew Rannells and Casey Wilson.
Costume Designers Guild president Salvador Perez discussed the role the awards and the guild played in the pandemic, saying, “As a community, we have survived a life-changing pandemic industry and been on the brink of work stoppage.”

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

The Costume Designers Guild has revealed nominees for its 22nd CDGAs, which celebrate excellence in film, TV, and short form costume design. Winners will be announced at a ceremony January 28 at the Beverly Hilton to be hosted by Mindy Kaling.
The guild previously announced that this year’s Cdga honorees include Mary Ellen Fields (Distinguished Service Award), Michael Kaplan, (Career Achievement Award), Adam McKay (Distinguished Collaborator Award) and Charlize Theron (Spotlight Award).

When the dust settles, the Dishonored games will be remembered as modern classics. On the ground, these elaborate playgrounds are made to last, stuffed with avenues to explore and hidden routes that reward the dedicated traveler. They’re a mathematical marvel. But from afar, the art deco touches and steampunk influences breathe life into the game’s cold, calculating geometry. Dishonored is that rare breed: a meticulous technical masterpiece that is also a work of art.
In five short years, Arkane has spun five games from the Dishonored web, and for a series about assassinating high-profile targets, Death of the Outsider introduces the biggest target of all: the beady black-eyed wonder known as The Outsider; the celestial being who has been there from the start. With the livelihood of the series’ enduring personality up in the air, this might be the end of Dishonored as we know it, but Arkane...

The 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards took place last night in Los Angeles. This year, the Excellence in Short Form Design category saw some stiff competition, with nominees such as Jude Law’s long-form Japanese Pepsi ad “Momotaro” and Beyoncé’s video for “Hold Up.” But at the end, colorful long capes, gladiator uniforms and samurai costumes won over Bey’s iconic ruffled yellow gown, sexy sleepwear and cool streetwear designed by B. Åkerlund.

Costume designer Amy Goodheart took home the award for her very detailed work in “Momotaro.” “Pulling inspiration from London punks in the ’70s and ancient Shogun — everything from a child king in a 28-foot cape covered in thousands of hand-painted gold feathers, to a dog-boy raised by wolves in the Andes has been realized,” Goodheart told the guild.

It seems like we haven’t talked this much about Mandy Moore since the early aughts when she was breaking our hearts in A Walk to Remember playing a (*15 Year Old Spoiler Alert*) high school student dying from Leukemia, and making us bust a move with pop sensations like “Candy.” But thanks to the new smash hit TV show This Is Us, Moore has made her return to the red carpet, most recently wowing at the Golden Globes in a very daring Naeem Khan gown with a deep, plunging neckline. And now she’s set to make another glamorous turn...

As the air gets a little colder, our sangria buzz wears off, and tan lines fade, we prepare to say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn — and more importantly, to the return of our favorite TV shows. You know you’re excited to have your friends from Homeland, Scandal, and New Girl back in your life. Like there’s anything else this entertaining to look forward to during your week? (We think not.)
Lucky for you, we’re here to help dust off your remotes and refresh your memory on where your favorite shows left off. Kerry Washington notoriously keeps her lips sealed about what we can expect from Scandal, as you can see in the video below, but will Olivia Pope and Jake Ballard return to D.C.? Will Nick and Jess really make it as “just friends”? Only time will tell. Because those cliffhangers are killing us,...

Midway through my maiden visit to the derelict Domino Sugar refinery near the Williamsburg Bridge, while gaping in awe at Kara Walker’s great gaudy monstrosity, her towering naked sphinx with the head scarf and features of a black mammy, I had something like a vision. That’s the crazy comical power Walker’s best work can have. Particularly this work, elliptically and archaically titled A Subtlety: Or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant. This behemoth, part Cecil B. DeMille parade float, part alien, is accompanied by a retinue of life-size deformed black figures, boys carrying bananas or baskets with parts of other boys, all made from molasses and brown sugar. I imagined this mad...

Seems like the major labels will continue to mine the nostalgia angle with the hope that they can squeeze a few more ducats from aging music fans everywhere. Fine by me, if the music merits the "super-deluxe-never-before-heard-or-seen" treatment. And since I've been sucked into that black hole with the Dead, Stones, Rush, Hendrix, Jesus & Mary Chain, et al., I've missed some amazing music and culture this past year. No excuses now as I cram a full year's worth of culture down my gullet before Christmas. You can check out more of my favorite culture from 2011 in these Spring, Summer, and Fall articles.

Hellebore and Rue is a collection of twelve short stories covering magic and the fantastical, with a couple of futuristic stories thrown in for good measure. As the title suggests, all feature queer women as the main characters although the focus on queer identity and how it relates to the narrative varies widely.
All of the stories prominently feature magic, and most of the writers break out of popularized (overused) magical tropes. There are no sexy vampires, and we get more complex approaches to witchcraft rather than the sort of suburban wicca which is all too common.

Britney Spears debuted her futuristic clip for "Hold It Against Me" on Thursday night (February 17), and the video, directed by veteran director Jonas Åkerlund, takes a sleek look at celebrity culture and includes some sexy dance sequences and funky, glamorous fashions.
The video was styled by Åkerlund's wife, B. Åkerlund, who has worked with everyone from Madonna to Lady Gaga to Blondie for their past music video endeavors. She certainly has the résumé and credibility to tackle styling a pop star like Britney. It's clear from watching the video that Spears was game to try on some new looks. The fashions are clean, fresh and sophisticated.
With multiple costume changes over several setups, the overall look of the video is only enhanced.
