Director: Jon Favreau; Screenwriter: Jon Favreau; Starring: Jon Favreau, Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, Robert Downey Jr; Running time: 115 mins; Certificate: Tbc
How does one begin to critique a film that is, at least a little bit, about how awful critics are? In Chef, writer-director and star Jon Favreau's wish-fulfilment comedy about food and family, the big baddie is a powerful food blogger (Oliver Platt), who nearly ruins chef Carl Casper's career after eviscerating his popular but unimaginative menu at a swanky California restaurant. "All you do is smugly s**t on my s**t," Casper says during a meltdown after the review goes viral, "And it hurts."
Favreau, as Carl, is passionate and obsessive about food but in a creative rut, forbidden by his domineering restaurant owner and boss (Dustin Hoffman) from cooking the exciting new dishes that he's come up with.
