When The Brothers Sun co-creator Byron Wu first conceived his story about a Taiwanese American immigrant family hiding their triad past in the suburbs, he knew exactly where such characters would live: the San Gabriel Valley, the Asian American enclave just east of the city of Los Angeles.
“It’s a hidden gem of Los Angeles,” said Wu, who lived in the Sgv’s Hacienda Heights when he first moved to L.A., in the press notes for the Netflix action dramedy premiering today, Thursday. The region’s underrepresentation in media appealed to him and co-creator and co-showrunner Brad Falchuk, and in addition to explicitly setting the story in the Sgv (younger son Bruce attends the fictional Cal State San Gabriel, characters carry grocery bags from Taiwanese American supermarket chain 99 Ranch), much of the series was filmed on location there.

The "Star Trek" episode "Space Seed" may be, to modern audiences, a little fraught. "Space Seed" introduced the character of Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), a former Earth despot who was found cryogenically frozen on board a drifting space vessel. Khan had been frozen for 200 years, having fled Earth after the vicious Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. Khan, you see, was a genetically enhanced soldier who conquered more than a quarter of Earth from 1992 to 1996, then was ousted and deposed and forced to flee into space. He was "the last of the tyrants to be overthrown."
When revived, Khan proves to be charming and confident, to a degree that the Enterprise crew finds appealing. Although a despot, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) notes that Khan was "the best of the tyrants," explaining to Spock (Leonard Nimoy) that admiring dictators, however gross, is a natural human impulse. Scotty (James Doohan) admits out loud that he admires Khan.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

Back in March 2020, Tue Nguyen was a little-known prep cook at Spago making mukbangs (or eating videos) and restaurant reviews and posting them online during her free time.
Today, she has more than a million followers across TikTok and Instagram and a forthcoming cookbook with Simon & Schuster and is opening her first restaurant, Di Di, in early July. “It’s been crazy,” she says, reflecting on how quickly her life has changed.
Though she admits she was insecure at first about publicizing her cooking on social media, when the pandemic hit, “I said, ‘Fuck it. Let’s just do it,’ ” recalls Nguyen, who’s known by the social media handle @TwayDaBae.
She started making videos of herself cooking Vietnamese cuisine for anyone who’d watch. Her first video was an easy recipe for fried rice posted to TikTok that has since garnered more than 1.3 million likes.

The Asian American experience will be different from person to person. And although many on-screen depictions highlight the more universal and timeless topics, such as generational gaps, cultural estrangement and racism, Viet Nguyen and Chris Dinh’s 2015 horror-comedy Crush the Skull instead focuses on its protagonist’s utmost dilemma; he and three other robbers inadvertently break into a serial killer’s house and then become trapped. Yet beneath the movie’s plot-driven exterior lies an overlooked but important example of Asian representation.
In Hollywood movies from both the past and present, Asians have a tendency to be the supporting character rather than the lead. And if they’re lucky, they may be given an occupation other than a doctor or a scientist of some kind. In more problematic cases, the Asian character is rooted in Orientalism or a product of Yellow Peril. Mister Wing from the original Gremlins, played to the max by Keye Luke,...

After working on Moana, director Don Hall was left thinking about the world he is leaving behind for his children. This thought gave birth to Strange World, an adventure story with an environmental theme. The film follows the legendary Clade family, as they explore the unknown regions of Avalonia. Jaeger (Dennis Quaid), Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ethan (Jaboukie Young-White) are three generations of the family, each with different opinions that conflict and threaten their latest mission. Producer Roy Conli was drawn in by the story of generational conflict between three generations of a family.

You might not be familiar with the Society of Explorers and Adventurers just yet, but you will be soon. That's because the organization, which has been referenced in several Disney theme park attractions all over the world, is getting its own film courtesy of "Strange World" writer and co-director Qui Nguyen and Ryan Reynolds. The Hollywood Reporter revealed the news of the film on Thursday, and an insider told the website that this film is intended to set up its very own live-action franchise, separate from a TV version being developed by Ron Moore ("For All Mankind"). Disney has not yet confirmed these plans, but an official announcement will likely be made soon.
Nguyen is currently slated to write the script for this untitled film. However, it is not clear if he has signed on to direct it. A decision on that may come after the release of "Strange World,...

Disney has tapped Strange World filmmaker Qui Nguyen to pen a Society of Explorers and Adventurers film, based on its theme park activation of the same name, with Ryan Reynold’s Maximum Effort aboard to produce.
