From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

X-Men ’97 just finished its first season, one of the best things the MCU has ever released. Yet, way back in 1992, Fox Kids almost killed its predecessor before it had a chance to evolve.
In the new documentary special Assembled: X-Men ’97, three of the chief creatives on X-Men: The Animated Series reveal their struggles getting the show off the ground. Producer and director Larry Houston recalls working under Marvel Productions president Margaret Loesch, who always championed the X-Men throughout the ’80s, resulting in misfires like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Pryde of the X-Men but no ongoing series. When Loesch took a role as head of Fox Children’s Network, she brought Houston with her and gave him his shot, with one caveat.
“The folks above her didn’t believe X-Men was gonna do anything,” says writer Julia Lewald, who, along with her husband Eric, worked as a writer on the original show.

Kevin Costner was at the top of his career back in 1992, having climbed the ladder of success with his critically acclaimed Dances with Wolves. Meanwhile, pop star Whitney Houston was busy making her way to the top with her magical voice and electric personality. And in true Hollywood fashion, despite orbiting in their own spheres, Costner and Whitney came together in the 1990s to create an iconic masterpiece that still resonates with the audience, The Bodyguard.

Also Huston’s acting debut, the film intensified their popularity and took them to new heights in their already glorious careers. But really it was Costner’s persistence and efforts that helped the movie become a cult classic and his childhood friend Huston to become a Grammy-winning star.

Dolly Parton’s country classic “Jolene” is likely to make its way to the next Beyoncé album, Parton herself all but confirmed.

Jelly Roll was put in a tough spot. This happened during his performance at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. It was his wife of seven years, Bunnie Xo, who put the country music star in that tough spot. However, Bunnie Xo made, what she believed to be, a critical error that could get him banned from the Houston Rodeo.

During the performance of Jelly Roll, the “I Need A Favor” singer pulled his wife on stage. According to Bunnie Xo, the two have a “script” she sticks to when she is on stage with her husband. In the new Whitney Houson biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Houston’s mother has police escort her daughter from her home (in front of her young daughter, Bobbi Kristina) after finding Houston in a drug-fueled stupor following her father’s death. We next see Houston in tranquil recovery at a rehab center, and later, a recreation of her emotional comeback performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. The film excises most of the 2000s from Houston’s story, including her starring role in 2005’s disturbing reality series Being Bobby Brown.

No one loves their cliches more than the biopic genre. However, no music biopic has blown through every cliche with such quick and reckless abandon as Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody. That’s not necessarily an insult.
Few pop culture icons loom as large as Whitney Houston, “The Voice,” who holds the record for seven consecutive number one singles atop the Billboard Top 100. By virtue of also being a modern celebrity, most people have some concept of Houston. Thus, the biopic spends less time educating people on who Whitney Houston is. In fact, it’s a crash course through her Wikipedia. Unfortunately, it misses out on her soul and motivation - what drove Whitney Houston from the biggest star in the world to death at 48?...

Naomi Ackie gives audiences a glimpse into the life of Whitney Houston in director Kasi Lemmons’ new biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and the new film is packed with a number of Houston’s hits.
Working with movement coach Polly Bennett and vocal coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods, Ackie also underwent physical transformation with the help of numerous wigs and false teeth to cover the natural gap in her two front teeth.
Ackie doesn’t sing most songs in the film — she lip syncs to Houston’s perfect tracks instead — but she mimics Houston’s style of singing with great detail. She steps in for performances by Houston that were not recorded, such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” and “Jesus Loves Me” from her choir-singing days. Ackie also portrays a nervous Whitney who is thrust onstage by her mother, who knows Clive Davis is in attendance,...

Tuesday Am: Final 4-day holiday numbers 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water came in with 95.5M in its second 4-day weekend. Global is nearing 1 billion. Nancy will have more on that soon.
That 4-day weekend is just under that of Rogue One‘s 4-day second weekend of 96.1M, the last time Christmas fell on a Sunday in 2016. Monday’s 31.5M is just under that of the Star Wars prequel too which made 32M. Total stateside cume of 293.2M is 26 ahead of the original Avatar‘s first 11 days in 2009. That movie crossed the 400M threshold on its 23rd day of release. Many wonder if Avatar 2 hits that mark as soon as New Year’s weekend.
Meanwhile, Avatar 2 has now earned 105.5M in IMAX global box office in less than two weeks — the fastest film to hit the 100M mark in IMAX since April 2019. James Cameron...

With the Christmas & Hannukah holiday’s officially over, we can finally return our focus to what matters most: box office numbers! And, to put it bluntly, unless you were the sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time, it wasn’t a great weekend for you!
As expected Avatar: The Way of Water came in first place with an estimated 3-day take of 64 million with some seeing the 4-day haul as high as 100 million. The film seems to have had solid Christmas Day numbers at just over 29 million, making it the fourth best Christmas day take ever. The sequel has also played to excellent weekday numbers, and this second weekend take is actually quite excellent! What does this all mean? Well, last week when the film came in pretty strongly under even the most modest of predictions, some people were sounding the alarms. But those numbers didn’t represent...

One heartbreaking revelation is “Don’t Cry For Me,” a prophetic song Houston performed at the Commitment to Life AIDS benefit in 1994. Written by BeBe Winans and Brian Keith Thomas, the song was originally recorded by Winans and his sister, CeCe Winans, for their chart-topping 1988 gospel album “Heaven.” Houston was also featured on that release, collaborating with the sibling duo on “Celebrate New Life” and “Hold Up the Light.”
For the soundtrack, Houston’s live vocals were isolated and placed over a new track produced by Rodney Jerkins.

Whitney Houston will forever be remembered as one of the greatest singers of all time. Throughout her career, Houston made history several times over, including being the only artist to ever chart seven consecutive No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and being the first female artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Not to mention, her 1992 single "I Will Always Love You," which was originally recorded by Dolly Parton, has become known as the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist. Since Houston helped pave the way for women in music, it's no wonder so many female artists like Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Jennifer Hudson have paid tribute to her following her death in 2012.
Although it's been a decade since her passing, Houston will forever live on through her music. In fact, her journey to stardom will be documented in the upcoming biopic "I Wanna Dance with Somebody,...

“It was a big challenge,” Ackie revealed of how the film balanced both sides of the late singer’s life. “It was really hard to do, but I think it does it the best way it can. To tell the truth but to protect somebody’s dignity and integrity is really important.”

I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Sony’s Whitney Houston biopic starring English actress Naomi Ackie that comes out Dec. 23, takes its title from “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” the lead single off Houston’s second album, 1987’s Whitney.
The track was written by then-married songwriting duo George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, aka Boy Meets Girl, who’d penned Houston’s first hit single, 1985’s “How Will I Know.” Some critics dismissed “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as too similar in sound to “How Will I Know” — but fans knew an earworm when they heard one. The song took six weeks to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, stayed there two weeks, and remained in the top 10 for nine weeks — more than any other song that year.
