If you're still mourning Mad Men, then another midcentury period drama, this one based on real life, may ease the loss.
It's got early-'60s fashion, cocktails and hair, and it dives into American life at the start of space exploration. ABC's Astronaut Wives Club, based on the book by Lily Koppel, focuses on the lives of the women behind the first Nasa test pilots.
This exclusive sneak peek from episode 2 shows the impact of the second Project Mercury flight in 1961 on the pilot's wife, Betty Grissom (JoAnna Garcia Swisher).

First rule of The Astronaut Wives Club: Don’t talk about the crushing fear and loneliness you know as the spouse of one of America’s first space cowboys.
Second rule of The Astronaut Wives Club: When in doubt, don pearls and a little lipstick.
ABC’s 10-episode period drama, which premiered Thursday (8/7c), centers on the spouses of the Mercury Program astronauts and their part in the late ’50s/early ’60s scramble to put a man in space. Too little too late, but ABC has finally found the perfect companion piece for "Pan Am." A bright-and-glossy dose of '60s nostalgia mixed with easily digestible proto-feminism, ABC's "Astronaut Wives Club" premieres on Thursday (June 18) night, more than three years after "Pan Am" was cancelled and I suspect they're likely to be remembered in the same way: Period dramas with high production values, a fantastic cast that ABC will look back at yearningly and unrealized creative potential obscuring otherwise solid storytelling. Is there a hypothetical TV series about the wives of the Mercury astronauts that's more than a slightly superficial, slightly choppy and slightly misfocused showcase for fine performances and some snazzy retro-style? Absolutely, but there's still some virtue to this sort of watchable, somewhat nourishing summer entertainment, even in a landscape that's overflowing with summer viewing options. Thursday's exposition-heavy premiere episode begins in 1961 with Louise Shepard (Dominique McElligott...

The Astronaut Wives Club is another risky effort in period drama that sounds great on paper. This is a sub-genre that is hard to get away from, because the theory not only makes for something easy to pitch, but really should be able to deliver.
Much like recent efforts Pan Am and The Playboy Club, if someone came to you with a synopsis and even a marginal cast, it would be difficult to turn up your nose. There’s something about showcasing an era by way of some particular note that solidly represents a strong force within it. All three shows, based on their trailers, just ooze a feeling that you want them to work out, and you want to jump into their world.
The Astronaut Wives Club is ensemble taken to extremes, with every astronaut, and their wives, jockeying for time on screen. You want a road map to get through the pilot,...

With the number of delays and creative changes ABC’s The Astronaut Wives Club has seen, one would think the producers were actually trying to land men on the moon instead of making a TV drama about the wives of the men who did. But even in what some have dubbed the new Golden Age of Television, there are bound to be some shows that are less deserving of your time than others.
In 2015, the viewing public will be faced with choices that include, not one, but two new shows from “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan; an update on iconic sitcom “The Odd Couple;” and a comedy starring “Saturday Night Live” alum Will Forte...

With the future of the "24" franchise — and her role as Jack Bauer's latest trusty sidekick — in limbo, Yvonne Strahovski has gone back to the past in more ways than one with her new gig, playing one of the title roles in ABC's "Astronaut Wives" club, written and executive produced by Stephanie Savage, and by "Chuck" co-creator Josh Schwartz. Based on the best-selling book by Lily Koppel, "Astronaut Wives Club" tells the story of the women behind Nasa's early astronauts, and how they deal with being catapulted into national celebrity overnight even as their husbands are preparing to be launched into orbit. Strahovski will play Rene Carpenter, wife of Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. The press notes suggest that "Her modern attitudes are source of both conflict and courage for the other Astrowives. Over time, Rene finds her own voice and awakens to a higher calling in politics, civil rights and women’s issues.
