HBO's ambitious sci-fi series "Westworld" took the cable channel by storm when the first season became one of its most-watched shows. There was palpable excitement each week for a new episode, and it felt like the hype actually came close to capturing the eager anticipation audiences once felt between new episodes of "Lost," complete with a variety of compelling mysteries driving the series.
Sadly, "Westworld" came to an unfortunate end with the show's fourth season. HBO canceled the series due to the show's high cost and diminishing returns, with viewership taking an extreme dip as the series continued. That's genuinely disappointing, because co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had just one more season left to complete the story they originally conceived, and as of now, fans will never find out how it was all supposed to end.
However, it's not...

Get in touch to send in cinephile news and discoveries. For daily updates follow us @NotebookMUBI.NEWSAbove: Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo on the set of Pierrot Le Fou (1965). Jean-Paul Belmondo has died, leaving behind six decades of films that started with his breakout role in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960). In his tribute to the iconic actor, critic Richard Brody describes Belmondo as the "height of cool [...] an icon of a cinema to which he didn't belong." The world has also been shocked by the death of the singular actor Michael K. Williams. Known to many as Omar Little from The Wire, Williams also worked with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson, Ava Duvernay, Martin Scorsese, and Steve McQueen. As his The Wire co-star Wendall Pierce says, Williams gave "voice to the human condition."Mondo is kicking off its Mondo x Death Waltz 10th Anniversary celebration with a deluxe reissue of...

Since its initial release in 1988, John Carpenter's They Live has only gotten better with each passing year. One of the reasons it has endured as long as it has is the bone-rattling score by Carpenter and Alan Howarth, and Mondo's Death Waltz Recording Company is looking to obey fans of the film with a new vinyl release of the movie's music (featuring a remaster by Howarth himself).
Press Release: Austin, TX – Thursday, January 17, 2019 – Grab your sunglasses, your bubblegum, and your shotgun as Death Waltz Recording Company is bringing back John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's brilliant score to They Live. The soundtrack will go on sale January 30, 2019 at MondoTees.com.

It's been more than twenty years since Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park hit theaters, but its impact is still being felt across Hollywood in a huge way. Putting aside the influence the original film had on today's up-and-coming filmmakers, Jurassic World was a dino-sized hit a couple of years ago and a sequel is headed to the big screen next year. If you see ripples in your glass of water or cup of coffee, it's because Mondo has unleashed new posters and pins based on the Jurassic Park franchise.
From Mondo: "[Today] we'll be releasing posters and enamel pins for one of our favorite film franchises, Jurassic Park!
We have a T-Rex! Kako's take on the iconic T-Rex breakout scene puts us in the perspective of Tim and Lex as the queen of the park stare down on them. With a "nightvision" glow-in-the-dark variant it's important to remember, if you don't move she can't see you. Dan McCarthy's poster tackles the latest addition to Jurassic World, the Indominus Rex. Dan's poster breaks down the genome of the hybrid that was engineered for mass entertainment and later mass destruction.
In addition to the posters, we'll have five paddock sign pins featuring classic icons for Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, Velociraptor, Dilophosaurus & Brachiosaurus!

The collector market for film fans has evolved quite a bit from when I was a young fan. Sure, there were opportunities for me to spend my money, but these days, there are so many better opportunities and better items. There's the entire poster phenomenon, best embodied by the success of Mondo, which has spurred what feels like an entire industry. I recently got talked into joining some commission groups, so now I've got some ultra-limited art coming my way that I look at as even more special because I had a hand in designing it. It was inevitable that soundtracks would also end up being major collector pieces, and one of the great frustrations for me when I was a younger film fan was realizing just how random the process is by which scores get released. There are some great companies now doing important archival work, like La-la-Land Records,...

There's some weird fun going down in Klown.
The 2010 Danish comedy film Klown is based on the popular six-season Danish TV show of the same name.
Klown follows the two wildly inappropriate friends Frank Hvam and Caspar Christensen (both real-life Danish comedians) as they run amok through the Danish countryside plowing through social taboos, unspeakable debaucheries and absurd sexual encounters. Each has a specific goal in mind: Misguided Frank kidnaps the nephew of his pregnant girlfriend in an eager attempt to prove his fatherhood potential, while the sex-driven Caspar is determined to visit a world-renowned brothel.
Directed by Mikkel Norgaard, the R-rated Klown received a well-reviewed limited release to theaters in the U.S. in July, 2012, and has already become a cult favorite.

Mondo has released images of three upcoming poster images today. The Alamo Drafthouse is doing a two-night series with exploitation director William Lustig, and has commissioned three posters to celebrate the three films being shown.

Maniac @ Alamo Drafthouse (2/8)
William Lustig is easily one of our nation’s greatest living filmmakers. His savage action and horror films (Vigilante; Maniac Cop) tore through the screen to assault the audience with blood, bullets and sheer hatred burning through every frame. And with this – inarguably his exploitation masterpiece – he plumbs the depths of the cinematic sewers like never before. Also accountable for the film’s multiple offenses is its titular leading man(iac) Joe Spinell, a deeply talented character actor who makes this the role of his lifetime. If I was the...

The Alamo Drafthouse commissioned three new posters from Mondo Poster for a series of screenings with exploitation director William Lustig. Looks like the art of the movie poster isn't entirely dead because this is some great work...
Vigilante gets the metallic ink treatment in an 18x24 print by Alan Hynes. This one is limited to 100. Next up is Maniac getting a 24x36 print from Ken Taylor. The run is a little bigger on this one at 200. Saving the best for last there's Maniac Cop 2. It's an 18x24 print by Jason Edmiston and is limited to 125.
The films will be playing tonight and tomorrow and posters will be available at the screenings. If the rest of us are lucky and there happens to be some left they will be on sale through Mondo Posters on Thursday. It's nice to know that not everyone just Photoshops a movie poster for screenings!

One of our favorite theatres is no doubt the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. Seriously? It's the coolest place in the world to watch a movie, and when they're not engulfed by Fantastic Fest, they hold cool events all year. Such as this!

Mondo has been on a roll lately, and today they tossed images of three upcoming poster images out to three different sites. But while the company has been doing a lot of high-profile films of late (Star Wars, Hellboy, etc) these films get back closer to the origins of Mondo. The Alamo Drafthouse is doing a two-night series with exploitation director William Lustig [1], and has commissioned three posters to celebrate the three films being shown. Tuesday night (that's tomorrow!) will be Maniac and then Maniac Cop 2 (note that despite the title similarities, these are unlreated movies) and then Wednesday will be Vigilante. And Mr. Lustig will be present for all three screenings. Check out the posters in full after the break. First, via Badass Digest [2], is Vigilante. The poster is by Alan Hynes, and is an 18x24 print complete with metallic inks. The print run is only 100. Bloody Disgusting...

It’s been quiet on the Mondotees, Alamo Drafthouse poster front lately, most likely due to the recent SXSW festival which kept them busy and also because they’ve done a complete overhaul on their website. To celebrate this they are introducing a new print and T-shirt collection by illustrator Mark Todd where he draws cinema’s biggest bad asses. The print set comes with six, 8x12” illustrations, sporting Robocop, Rambo, Snake Plissken, Ripley, Chuck Norris and a character that has never been in any movie, which makes perfect sense. The set goes for 30 bucks and you can also get a T-shirt with your favorite action star as well that go for 28 bucks a pop.
The Alamo is also celebrating two of Mel Brooks’ best films, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein with a couple of very nice looking posters. Blazing Saddles was created by Bobby Dixon, is a 20” x 26” screenprint...
