Gu Xiaogang knows firsthand the impact that international film festivals can have.
Gu turned to the Beijing International Film Festival back in 2018 in an effort to get his breakthrough feature, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, made. He took his film to Bjiff’s project market and he walked away with the funds he needed after impressing investors with his story — an intimate look at a family’s life as it evolves across one year — along with his languid style.
The international film world has since felt much the same. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains went on to become the first Chinese-language film to close Critics’ Week at Cannes in 2019, was selected among the top 10 films of the year by the leading French film magazine Cahier du Cinema in 2020 and led directly to Gu being named a co-winner of the Akira Kurosawa Award at last year’s 36th Tokyo International Film Festival,...

Gyeongseong Creature is loosely based on the tragic lethal experiments conducted by the Japanese imperial army on the Chinese and Koreans. Unit 731, as it was called, was a unit of the Japanese imperial army that conducted human experiments to create bio-weapons in the 1930s and 1940s. This is when the TV show moves away from reality and creates a fantastical creature that can destroy entire cities. The main question the show poses is: Who were the real monsters? Of course, the most obvious answer is the members of the imperial army, who ruthlessly conducted these experiments with no remorse. In this fictional tale, a man named Tae-Sang is sent on a mission to find a woman for a police commissioner. Slowly, he starts to discover the truth about this hospital.

Gyeongseong Creature is the latest in the long list of Korean thrillers with monstrous creatures that all look somewhat alike with recycled plotlines that all end with the same philosophical question: “Who is the real monster?” Gyeongseong Creature in many ways feels like South Korea’s answer to Stranger Things. They’re both Netflix shows, so I suppose everyone wins. The show is set in 1945 Gyeongseong, present-day Seoul, and follows Jang Tae-Sang, a rich and popular man, who goes on a dangerous journey when Commissioner Ishikawa demands he find a missing woman for him. Tae-Sang soon gets involved with a young woman named Chae-Ok, who is an expert at searching for missing people, dead or alive. He entrusts her and her father with helping him find Myeong-Ja in order to save his business and livelihood.

Chekhov famously stated that you shouldn’t introduce a gun in the first act of a play without firing it off sometime later. In director Gao Peng’s feature debut, A Long Shot, the gun in question is seen during the first five minutes and then remains unused until the finale. For the rest of this murky, gritty thriller’s two-hour running time, firearms take a back seat to the rampant corruption and crime taking place in China’s northeastern industrial wasteland, where a long-standing iron and steel foundry is in the midst of a major crisis.
The Fenglin Ferroalloy Factory, a massive rust-covered facility where nearly the entire movie is set, employs more than 8,000 people and is almost a city onto itself. Ichiyama Shozo assumed control of the program of the Tokyo International Film Festival after a long programming career that included Tokyo and the slightly more indie Tokyo Filmex events. He is also a regular producing partner of Chinese art-house darling Jai Zhangke. These influences have shaped his approach to this year’s Tokyo Iff lineup, he told Variety.
The 2023 autumn festivals all seem to have strong line-ups. And Tokyo is no exception. What is your understanding of the reasons for that?
This year we received many more entries than previous years. I don’t know the reason, but I feel the film production situation worldwide has come back to the level before the pandemic.
What were your guidelines and criteria for selection this time around?

Following a generation of organizational drift, the Tokyo International Film Festival has charted a course towards greater global influence under the ambitious leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando. A career diplomat for Japan’s Foreign Service, Ando took the helm of the Tokyo festival in mid-2019 and quickly set about remaking the event, changing its location, shaking up the programming ranks, recruiting arthouse star Hirokazu Kore-eda to program a seminar series and adding more glamor to the after-dark parties and filmmaker fetes. A lot of that revitalization went unseen by the international film community, however, thanks to the long interregnum of the pandemic. In 2023, the Tokyo festival’s renewed outlook will be harder to miss.
“Now that the coronavirus disaster is fully over, we were able to make further progress in moving forward and upgrading our festival,” Ando tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Chinese directors of 5th and 6th Generation have garnered wide international recognition for their fiction output. Their documentary colleagues, however, are not met with the same amount of love and interest at film festivals. Unrightly so, as their work of documenting and exposing the rapid changes of People's Republic of China is highly commendable. Shot almost independently, with minimal budgets and no support from the government, Chinese guerilla filmmakers have to function in some of the least favourable film industry conditions. Here are some of the works representative of the Chinese indie documentary movement of last two decades.
Three Sisters (2012) by Wang Bing
Contrary to what was said in this article's introduction, Wang Bing stands as an exception to the rule. As the most recognized Chinese contemporary documentary filmmaker, he is widely celebrated since his monumental debut “West of the Tracks” (2003). “Three Sisters” however is a far more accessible entry point into his filmography.

Another Shaw Brothers collaboration between novelist Gu Long, director Chor Yuen and actor Ti Lung, this third installment of the Chu Liu Hsiang film series is actually a follow up to “Legend of the Bat” (1978) which started with “Clans of Intrigue” back in 1977. The English title is rather misleading since it has nothing to do with Chu's “The Sentimental Swordsman” film series which starred Ti Lung as Little Flying Dagger Li, a different character altogether.

Production is now under way on “The Elephant Odyssey,” a major wildlife documentary film that will release in Imax theaters next year.
The film, directed by Alice Gu, chronicles the highly unusual trek by a herd of elephants in China that began in early 2020. As the group diverted from their usual habitat and marched over 1,000 km (600 miles) across remote Yunnan Province they attracted global attention, including live-streamed drone footage. They raided grain stores, indulged in impromptu village feasts and messy mud fights, and even gave birth while on the road.
Reasons for the herd’s 18-month trek are unclear, with wildlife experts variously pointing to climate change and the failure of conservation efforts.
“The Elephant Odyssey” is directed by Gu (“The Donut King”), with Clair Popkin serving as the director of photography. It is filmed with Imax-certified cameras and will feature exclusive footage of the elephants’ journey through an unprecedented...

Zhang Dao Ling was a Chinese religious leader and the founder of the “Way of the Celestial Masters” movement of Taoism, who lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty. In essence, his followers were attracted to his faith-healing method which led them to believe in the purification of the body and the cure of illness caused by sinful-mindedness. However, Zhang Tian Shi (Celestial Master Zhang) was also a name given to him by many Taoists because of his magical skills as a healer and an exorcist. At times he was affectionately pictured as an old scholar wearing a Taoist crown and riding on a tiger.

Watching over Beijing’s Xicheng district is an enormous white pagoda, a relic of the Kublai Khan rule, so majestic and otherworldly in looks and stature it might as well have been dropped on Earth from a far-flung planet. Legend has it the monument casts no shadow––not in its immediate vicinity, at least––though its silhouette is said to stretch as far as Tibet. No other corner of the megalopolis features as prominently as this one in Zhang Lu’s The Shadowless Tower, a film to which the 13th-century wonder lends its title as well as a metaphor for the kind of permanence its drifters fumble after. And no one among them is as drawn to it as Gu Wentong (Xin Baiqing).

The eccentric design of the White Pagoda, a 13th-century Buddhist temple in the Xicheng district of Beijing, makes it hard to see its shadow. This has given rise to the local legend that its shade can actually be found some two thousand miles away in Tibet, the temple’s spiritual home. The landmark is a constant presence in Chinese director Zhang Lu’s tender, brimming “The Shadowless Tower,” which fixes its setting in the very heart of the Chinese capital, a city rarely portrayed as fondly as it is here. But the pagoda can also be seen as an evocatively imperfect metaphor for a lifestage: that tipping point in the middle of one’s time when, with the past and future weighing equally on either side, you can feel disoriented and suddenly directionless, as when the sun is directly overhead and you cast no shadow.
