Ghanaian rapper/singer Black Sherif’s latest single “Zero” is tranquil bliss – with an edge. Mabel, who calls Swedish (with Sierra Leonean heritage) singer Neneh Cherry and British producer Cameron McVey mom and dad – joins him on the new song.
Over a dreamy track punctuated by hard hip-hop drums, Blacko and Mabel meditate on healing and living drama free. While Sherif raps about balancing fame and dark forces with his sense of peace, Mabel sings, “Found me a piano in the hotel lobby/Singing to myself, I don’t – nobody...

De La Soul have been close collaborators with Gorillaz dating back to their appearance on the 2005 hit “Feel Good Inc.,” but it turns out they were originally supposed to guest on a completely different song. During a recent episode of Kyle Meredith With…, De La Soul co-founder Maseo revealed that Damon Albarn initially suggested they appear on a different Demon Days single: “Kids with Guns.”
“When we went to do ‘Feel Good Inc.’, the initial song was ‘Kids with Guns,'” Maseo recalls. “When we were having a conversation about ‘Kids with Guns,’ I honestly came out and said, ‘Hey man, I think we forcing it.’ I said, ‘I don’t think this is the record. I think we’re not really collaborating, we’re just featuring on the record. It’s like Gorillaz featuring De La. We really need to do like a collaboration, where we both artistically show our flavor.

For a young teenager steeped in grunge, Britpop, and the Beatles, the discovery of 1970s UK punk rock was tantamount to a swift slap in the face—and a glorious one, at that. And one of the crucial pieces of pre-internet background information was England’s Dreaming, Jon Savage’s indispensable study of the era. The book is full of memorable figures—none more so than Poly Styrene. She is only a minor player in Savage’s text, but few resonate more. The author explains that “Poly was a star, with her dayglo clothes, multi-racial background, teeth braces, and surreal songs which wittily commented on that very process of consumption and packaging that she was at once celebrating and transcending.”
All of these elements and many others are represented in the long-in-the-works documentary Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché, which makes its Canadian premiere at Hot Docs 2021. The timing is apropos.

When it comes to lowered expectations in pop, there probably isn’t a better candidate than the Avalanches’ third record. The Australian Edm combo’s debut, Since I Left You, took the art of constructing music out of samples to a heightened level of craft; that patchwork quilt of music was one of 2000’s kickiest albums. Nearly two decades passed before we heard from the Avalanches again, and when we did, time seemed to have passed them by: 2016’s Wildflower was a far less satisfying grab-bag of voices, sound effects...

A week after recruiting Angèle for “Fever,” Dua Lipa has dropped a video of the duo immersing themselves in London nightlife.
Directed by Clément Durou and Pierre Dupaquier, the clip opens with Lipa calling a cab in London, only to have Angèle suggest they take a walk instead. They stroll through the streets, eating french fries and dancing in alleyways. “I’ve got a fever/So can you check?” Lipa sings in the chorus. “Hand on my forehead/Kiss my neck.”

The track features a sample of Alan Parsons Project’s “Eye in the Sky” and is inspired — like the album itself — by the story of astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife Ann Druyan capturing their romance on tape and sending it into space as part of the Voyager’s Golden Record.
“Leon is an incredible singer, with just the most beautiful voice.

Did you see Mabel performing her hit song "Don't Call Me Up" at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards? Maybe that was your introduction to the beauty from the UK, but it surely won't be the last you see of her. This singer/songwriter was first welcomed on the music scene in 2015 when she uploaded "Know Me Better" on SoundCloud. From there, her career has moved forward quickly, and she's even toured with fellow British musician Harry Styles.
Although her musical career has relatively recently taken off, Mabel is no stranger to the industry. Her mother is '90s singer Neneh Cherry and her father is Cameron McVey, a producer known for his work with Massive Attack. Not only is Mabel talented, but she's also too beautiful for words.

Swedish singer Neneh Cherry explores the way life is often viewed, and lived, through the lens of a phone in the new video for “Natural Skin Deep.”
Artist and filmmaker Akinola Davies directed the clip, which finds Cherry singing the frenetic cut and dancing around the streets of Beirut, Lebanon. Her performance, however, is given a surreal edge by the various crowds who film her every move on their phones, whether they’re watching her on the shores of the Mediterranean or staring at her through the window of a house.

Unicef UK Ambassadors and High Profile Supporters Rita Ora, Sir Chris Hoy, Martin Bell and Emma Willis led this week’s fantastical turn out for Unicef UK’s ‘Twisted Tales’ Halloween Ball raising £435,054 to support Unicef’s life-saving work for children in danger around the world.
The bold and the beautiful descended on London’s Banqueting House for a Halloween experience like no other, with an interactive “twisted tales” themed champagne reception, a Beauty and the Feast dinner, and stellar performances from Brit-award-winning Neneh Cherry and Unicef UK supporter Rita Ora.
Dinner guests heard from Unicef UK Ambassador Sir Chris Hoy about the vital work made possible by generous donations to Unicef, and guests pledged their support at a money-can’t-buy auction – with lots including a starring role in David Walliams’ new book, an exclusive visit to the set of The Crown with Unicef UK supporter Olivia Colman, and...

Whether mixing up free-jazz and ‘80s punk-funk with Rip Rig and Panic on “Storm The Reality Asylum,” or rap and electro-pop on her own 1989 hit “Buffalo Stance”, Neneh Cherry has always bent styles to serve her own ends. She’s still doing it on Broken Politics, which folds a career’s worth of musical obsessions into a single set. She’s also speaking her mind, per usual, addressing our global shitshow not with histrionics, but with heartfelt, clear-eyed ruminations, sorrow, playfulness and resolve.

Swedish singer Neneh Cherry unveiled two new songs, “Synchronised Devotion” and “Natural Skin Deep,” from her upcoming album, Broken Politics, out October 19th via Small Supersound/Awal Recordings.
“Synchronised Devotion” is a spellbinding tune centered around a slipstream piano and the occasional ring of a vibraphone. Cherry’s freewheeling vocals swing between a soft croon and rapping as she unravels her evocative lyrics, “It’s my politics living in the slow jam/ Playful, supreme, delightful, hateful/ Play with me/ It’s my politics living the in the slow dance/ Synchronised devotion/ I’m a Pisces,...

Neneh Cherry will release her fifth solo album, the Four Tet-produced Broken Politics, on October 19th via Small Supersound/Awal Recordings. The singer previewed the record with the hushed, tense “Shot Gun Shack,” which alludes to cycles of fear and violence. “Pick up the gun, you know you gonna use it,” she sings over a trip-hop-styled beat. “You know that gun is gonna get loaded/ Say my name before you pull it.”
In a statement, Cherry said the song title was inspired by a conversation she had at the funeral...

Neneh Cherry fuses trip-hop ambiance and protest lyrics on her spacey new song “Kong.” Four Tet and Massive Attack‘s 3D (Robert Del Naja) co-produced the track, which references the European refugee crisis.
“Every nation seeks its friends in France and Italy and all across the seven seas,” Cherry sings over simmering strings and droning keys. “Goddamn guns and guts and bitter love still put a hole in me.”
The Swedish singer-songwriter paired the song with a minimalist, slow-moving video. Director Jean Nkiru cuts between families, a forlorn bride and groom and Cherry,...

Revered for a glittering career working with the most notable names in music and, latterly, in the world of the film, 62-year old Anton Corbijn sits before us rather in a rather reflective mood on a wet afternoon in the heart of the ancient Italian city of Lucca.
Appearing at the Lucca Film Festival for a career retrospective, he took some time out to talk to HeyUGuys’ Greg Wetherall about Kurt Cobain and the Nirvana collaboration he turned down, why he wouldn’t go into photography if he were starting out today and his own favourite album artwork.
Right now, he’s musing on what has happened to his beloved photography in the modern world. “I wouldn’t become a photographer now”, he sighs. “To find your voice is so hard. Now, when I come up with something, people look at it, because they know me, but if you don’t have that position,...

A talk (and a walk) with Mark Cousins about his film Stockholm, my Love
Mark Cousins’ film, Stockholm, My Love, is a poetic ramble through Stockholm, a guided city-symphony exploring the skyline and the depths of remorse, a reverie on concrete and water and memory and grief, and the redemptive power of flanerie (the dedicated wandering that Balzac called “the gastronomy of the eye”). Neneh Cherry plays an architect, our guide, and we follow her as she roams.
It seemed apt, then, that Cousins and I talked as we strolled through London, from the BFI Southbank to the May Fair Hotel, intermittently pursued by Chris Doyle, the esteemed cinematographer who shot the film.

Neneh Cherry strolls the streets of Sweden’s capital in critic Mark Cousins’s low-key fiction debut
The fiction debut from Irish critic and documentarian Mark Cousins is, like all his best work, an essay film. Low-key and inward-looking, it is shot by frequent Wong Kar-Wai collaborator Christopher Doyle and follows Alva (Neneh Cherry) as she strolls around the concrete city of Stockholm. Alva’s inner monologue is vocalised by way of a dream-like voiceover in English and Swedish and, later in the film, by song and on-screen text. Cherry’s sultry, resonant voice helps along the otherwise wafty narration, which skirts themes of personal trauma before opening out to broader reflections on both the city and the soul.

Despite this being Mark Cousins’ first fictional feature Stockholm, My Love is not what you’d call a conventional narrative. That’s to be expected from the documentarian behind the 15-hour long A Story of Film: An Odyssey. Stockholm, My Love however is more reminiscent of his cityscape work such as Here Be Dragons and I am Belfast. A wafer-thin narrative that exists as little more than a framing device for an extended love letter to the aforementioned city.
The story, such as it is, features the acting debut of singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry as Alva. An architecture tutor, Alva is due to give a lecture on the anniversary of a traumatic road accident that still haunts her. Spontaneously she does a bunk, wandering the streets and parks of Stockholm narrating her innermost thoughts and feelings to her late father. As an architect Alva is also able to...

Neneh Cherry stars as a grieving academic who wanders Stockholm in a pensive mood
Stockholm, My Love is an intriguing and palate-cleansing work, ruminative and cerebral, with a literary feel, like an elegant European novella in translation. There are some tremendous reportage images created by both Mark Cousins and Christopher Doyle as cinematographers, showing the city’s clear, open, mostly unpopulated spaces. In the city-symphony tradition, it has something of Chris Petit and Iain Sinclair’s London Orbital or Cousins’ own previous work, I Am Belfast. This is vernacular cinema, in its way, straightforwardly taking the camera for a walk.
Stockholm, My Love stars singer Neneh Cherry, presented in downbeat, daylit and unglamorised closeup, and the whole film could be seen as a reverse engineered video for her title song, which comes in at the very end. She plays an academic who had come to Stockholm to give a lecture on the city’s architecture,...

A name I haven't heard in a long time, Neneh Cherry isn't necessarily making a "come back," as she's "been here for years;" I just haven't been keeping up with her travels, so it's ultimately my fault! As she noted in a lengthy interview I came across that she gave to UK paper The Guardian last year: "People say, where did you go for 18 years? Unless there's some sort of product to show for it, it's as though the life doesn't exist. I knew my kids were growing up fast and I decided to catch those years. That's an option, isn't it? If you want to become more authentic in your life and less of a parody." The interview was published in anticipation of the...

Best known for his epic, 15-hour documentary "The Story of Film: An Odyssey" (2011), prolific critic, film historian, and director Mark Cousins' new musical, "Stockholm My Love," stars Swedish singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry as Alva, a Swedish architect faced with the one-year anniversary of a a traumatic accident. Co-written by Cousins and Swedish producer Anita Oxburgh, and shot by acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle ("In the Mood for Love," "2046"), the film has been picked up by Fortissimo Films, with plans for a festival launch later this year. "Stockholm My Love," which Fortissimo will introduce via promo reel at Berlin's European Film Market, reshapes Cousins' essayistic style into dramatic form, with a soundtrack that includes Abba's Benny Andersson, 19th-century composer Franz Berwald, and five original songs performed by Cherry. The film is produced by Oxburgh, of...
