Buffett, 76, had been fighting Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years. He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July,” the obituary read.

Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, whose laid-back, good-humored, often tropically-themed brand of country-laced pop spawned a lucrative one-man business empire, died Friday. He was 76.
Buffett’s death was confirmed through a statement on his official website: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
Buffett had been fighting Merkel cell skin cancer for four years, a statement revealed on his official website.
The statement added, “He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July.”
Over the course of a 50-year professional career, Buffett collected just one top-10 pop hit: “Margaritaville,” a marimba-laced, tequila-soaked paean to kicking back on the beach in the aftermath of a breakup, which rose to No. 8 on the national charts.

It is difficult to envision the moment playing out any other way.
Robert Earl Keen, seated onstage at Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, Texas, had been playing for 3,000 people for nearly two-and-a-half hours. Only a single chorus remained between him and retirement after 41 years of playing shows. The Americana icon is 66 and had spent nearly all of his 2022 I’m Coming Home Farewell Tour playing from a chair after a series of health woes made standing for an entire concert all but impossible. But now, a real goodbye was upon him.

After a two-year break because of the pandemic, this year’s Luck Reunion, the daylong gotta-see-it-to-believe-it festival at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch outside of Austin, was already destined to be special. If ever there was what we can affectionately call a “Sundance movie,” it is A Love Song, a micro-small, actor-driven heartfelt drama set in the rural west mountainous region of Colorado from first time feature writer/director Max Walker-SIlverman. Premiering in the Next section of the Sundance Film Festival tonight this is a deliberately paced look at two lonely lives of former childhood friends now leading a seemingly nomadic existence in the aftermath of grief over the loss of their individual spouses as they forge a tentative reunion that might – or might not – lead to romance, even as they have reached their senior years. In an odd way it is the perfect companion piece for last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Nomadland, a movie also set in the sparse surroundings of the Southwest and focusing on a particular character, now alone, heading out on the road following the end...

Two years ago, Todd Snider returned to his troubadour ways on Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3. It was his first album full of the type of sardonic Nashville hippie storytelling Snider’s best known for (and has long mastered) since 2012’s post-Occupy opus Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables. After a year of isolation, devastation and loss of close friends, Snider is back with First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder, an outgrowth of the loose livestream performances he’s has been offering in quarantine over the past year.

This year’s South by Southwest Film Festival has showcased several documentaries about successful musicians, including Tom Petty, Charli Xcx and Sparks. But you could argue that they haven’t had one about a better songwriter than “Without Getting Killed or Caught,” Tamara Saviano and Paul Whitfield’s affectionate and lyrical film about Texas-born songwriter Guy Clark, which finally premiered at SXSW last week, a year after being booked for the canceled 2020 edition of the festival.
A plainspoken poet whose first album, 1975’s “Old No. 1,” contained more classic songs than most people can muster in an entire career, Clark racked up hits for people like Jerry Jeff Walker, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill and the Highwaymen, but rarely showed up on the charts himself until they started measuring the Americana genre, which he pretty much epitomized. The folk singer delivers hilarious, heartbreaking songs about his life, punctuating them with stories that can stretch as long as 18 minutes — about everything from the time he joined a Memphis cover band called K.K. Last October, Texas lost two of its biggest musical legends: Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver. Walker wrote some of country music’s funniest, most heartbreaking songs, including 1968’s “Mr. Bojangles.” Shaver pioneered outlaw country, writing classics like “Georgia on a Fast Train” and “Ride Me Down Easy,” recorded by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and more — all while living up to his outlaw reputation in real life.

“You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone,” Billy Joe Shaver sang in his signature anthem “Live Forever.” The Texas songwriter died October 28th at 81 after suffering a stroke, immediately casting that lyric into stark reality. Just a few days prior, Jerry Jeff Walker died at 78 after a long bout with cancer. Both men were influential songwriters and personalities of the outlaw country movement and their deaths hit especially hard with those they influenced — including Ryan Bingham.

Jerry Jeff Walker, a Texas favorite country singer who crossed over to the pop charts by writing the hit Mr. Bojangles, has died at age 78. He had cancer, according to family spokesman John T. Davis.
“He had battled throat cancer for many years, and some other health issues,” Davis said Saturday.
Walker came out of New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s, where he became a founding member of the band Circus Maximus. He moved to Texas in the 1970s and had a hit in 1972 with his version of the Guy Clark song, L.A. Freeway.
In 1973, Walker and the Lost Gonzo Band recorded a live album in Texas called Viva Terlingua that became a classic of the country-rock scene. He went on to release more than 30 albums, including on his own Tried & True independent label. Walker revealed his throat cancer in a 2017 interview. “I guess I took my singing for granted,...

The lines outside Nashville’s biggest music venues ballooned last week, thanks to the influx of fans, bands, and music-industry personnel attending the 20th annual AmericanaFest. It was the festival’s biggest year to date, and Nashville — a city that’s grown exponentially, with more than a half million people moving to town during the last decade — was primed for the chaos. If visitors looked hard enough, they might’ve even seen the humorous advertisements promoting longtime East Nashvillian Todd Snider, who shelled out enough cash to fill his own page in a local magazine.

Mavis Staples and Cedric Burnside both show up, along with Jason Isbell and Duane Betts, who guest on the song “Mean Old World,” which was once cut by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. Fans wedged into every nook and cranny of Spicewood ranch in Luck, Texas, on Thursday night for Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion — many trying to get a good view of Lukas Nelson. They stood along the wooden sidewalks in front of the old storefronts, on the steps of the western saloon and jailhouse, and the fortunate few looked down from a balcony above the general store. There, on stage, was Lukas, in a tall top hat and a black coat with his arms outstretched, doing a half turn to present all before them.

Joshua Fleming never expected to live this long. Self-medicating with a cocktail of drugs in his early twenties, bouncing between jobs and playing in punk bands, he was hell-bent on burning out instead of fading away. So it’s not so surprising that the Vandoliers front man should be so pleased about finally playing the long game, with a new record contract in hand and his band’s third LP, Forever, now on the books.

When Guy Clark recorded his 1988 album Old Friends, he enlisted a bevy of musician buds to fulfill the title, from Rosanne Cash and Vince Gill to Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Those last two appear on Steve Earle’s new version of the LP’s title track, the latest song released from his upcoming tribute to Clark, Guy.
In the hands of Earle and his band the Dukes, “Old Friends” is a solemn prayer, with Harris harmonizing with Earle on the opening verse. She did likewise on Clark’s original recording of the song,...

Steve Earle offers a reverent reading of one of Guy Clark’s most personal songs, “The Randall Knife.” The latest track off Earle’s upcoming Guy, a tribute album to the late songwriter, “The Randall Knife” tells the complicated relationship between a father and son.
A track off Clark’s 1995 LP Dublin Blues, the song features a spoken-word delivery by Clark, who died in 2016. Earle speaks his way through his version too, a little gruffer and more ominous than Clark’s original, which unfolded like a campfire story. “My father...

Ten years ago, Steve Earle took a break from recording original material to make Townes, a tribute to his longtime friend and colleague Townes Van Zandt. To Earle, Van Zandt was his Bob Dylan — or his “Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg,” alongside Guy Clark, whom Earle knew since the Seventies when he became his guitar player and, eventually, like family.
So for his 19th studio album, Earle decided to honor the late songwriter with Guy, a collection of Clark covers that also features appearances from Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Terry Allen,...

In 1974, just months after Steve Earle hitchhiked from San Antonio to Nashville, he wound up taking over bass-playing duties from Rodney Crowell in Guy Clark’s band. Forty-five years later, Earle, aided by his longtime band the Dukes, will pay homage to the profound influence the late songwriter and mentor had on his life and songcraft with Guy, a 16-track collection of tunes penned by Clark. The first release from the album, “Dublin Blues,” is out today.

In 2006, four years after Waylon Jennings’ death, New West Records released a live album featuring the outlaw legend’s April 1st, 1989 appearance on the long-running PBS music series Austin City Limits. Jennings was himself at a personal crossroads in early ’89 — having already battled his addiction to cocaine, he kicked a six-packs-a-day cigarette habit in 1988 and underwent heart surgery just four months before this Acl appearance. He was also between record labels, having left McA after two album projects and soon to record briefly for Epic, where he would enjoy his...

Jerry Jeff Walker has never been one to do what he was supposed to do. A military dropout who scored a Top 10 hit in writing “Mr. Bojangles,” he left New York City for Austin, Texas, long before it was known as the “Live Music Capitol of the World.” And in the summer of 1973, Walker cut an LP, ¡Viva Terlingua!, that helped lay the foundation for the outlaw country sub-genre of country music.

The Texas Hill Country town of Luckenbach may be little more than a few buildings, including a general store and a dance hall. But few places are more symbolic of mythic Texas than this honky-tonk mecca, party venue and tourist destination a few miles south of Fredericksburg.
Luckenbach owes much of its fame to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, of course; their 1977 hit "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)" introduced the tiny town to a vast audience and made it an essential part of Texas pop culture. But modern Luckenbach might not exist at all if not for another legendary Texan -- Hondo Crouch.

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

The Democrats may have a more party-hardy reputation than the Republicans, but that doesn’t mean the right isn’t planning to get down with some celebs this week. Speaking from experience (I covered both conventions in 2008), I’d like to note that regardless of the celebrity special guest performing — be it Will.i.am or Willie Nelson — convention parties are pretty boring compared to Oscar parties or SXSW parties, or even say, your niece’s third birthday party. Most of the attendees at the DNC and Rnc alike are delegates in uncomfortable suits, dancing uncomfortably to some band they’ve never heard of.

Those near the Democratic and Republican nominating conventions this year can show support for the troops while getting entertainment from Willie Nelson and Flo Rida, courtesy of a new organization dedicated to helping veterans and their families.
Got Your 6, a nonpartisan organization that advocates for veterans and military families, announced the fundraising concerts today in a statement to The Huffington Post.
"This election cycle is extremely important for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, making it especially important for Got Your 6 to bring increased awareness of veteran issues to both parties at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions," said Chris Marvin, the organization's executive director. "With the support of this amazing line-up of artists, our two concert events this fall will bring a national spotlight to the urgent need for programs that bridge the gap between military service and civilian life."

Twenty years ago, Jerry Jeff Walker inspired 19-year old Todd Snider to be a musician. Today, Snider is paying back his appreciation with tribute album _Time As We Know It:The Songs Of Jerry Jeff Walker_. The album produced by Bon Was (Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones) drops April 24.
