Danny Boyle’s 1996 film “Trainspotting” follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed Edinburgh in the late 1980s. Based on Irvine Welsh’s novel by the same name, the film went on to become a critical and commercial hit around the globe. Besides parking controversy for its subject matter, the film also produced two acclaimed soundtracks that featured music from and inspired by the film, including Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Primal Scream, Pulp, New Order and more.

If you've been following the news, you know that Kesha's ongoing legal struggles have been, well, ongoing. And dramatic. And deeply troubling. And perhaps above all, confusing. Here's a quick guide to getting oriented: What's at stake here?Kesha is basically trying to get out of her recording contract with Dr. Luke (and his parent company, Sony Music). It specifies that he produce at least six songs on each of her albums. She hasn't released an album since 2012's Warrior. Why does she want out?Kesha alleges that she was the victim of emotional and sexual abuse (including rape) by Dr.

Bernard Rose’s modern day Frankenstein will screen exclusivly at Triskel Christchurch Cinema, one night only, Thursday 18 February before its worldwise release on DVD. UK director Rose began his film career working with Jim Henson before directing music videos for MTV, most notably the uncensored version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Relax. His later work includes horror film Candyman in 1992, and the historical romance Immortal Beloved in 1994. “Frankenstein is as relevant today as when it first appeared nearly two hundred years ago,” says Bernard Rose. “Its central premise, that the goal of science is to create consciousness, speaks to us because it is a fundamental truth and only in our era is the possibility now nearing fact. Mary Shelley’s book is, of course, the seminal Horror, Science Fiction and Gothic novel, and as such has been adapted and interprated many times. None more memorably than James Whale’s classic film starring Boris Karloff.

Music videos have long been a medium for pushing boundaries, from provocative attempts to undermine mainstream homophobia (Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Relax) to darkly sexual masterpieces (Nine Inch Nails – Closer). Many of the most influential directors working in Hollywood today learned their trade by working on music videos, so it’s telling that there has always been a large amount of impressive art gracing MTV’s various different channels.
There is a fine line, however, between aesthetically breaking down conservative prejudices and just simply being shocking for the sake of it. What happens when music videos go too far, courting controversy by projecting objectionable content that is genuinely mind-boggling in its offensiveness?
This list documents some of the most shocking music videos ever created. Some are utterly brilliant works of visual art that broke boundaries like those mentioned above, and they are celebrated here. Others are not so wonderful,...

Released in 1986, Bubble Bobble was one of the best two-player arcade games ever. Let's make a journey to the cave of monsters...
What’s the greatest co-op videogame of all time? Portal 2? Gauntlet? Left 4 Dead 2, maybe? For me, Bubble Bobble has to rank somewhere near the top of the list. A single-screen platform game where dragons blow bubbles and hooded enemies respond by rolling giant cookies along the floor, Bubble Bobble is still one of the best two-player arcade games ever.
Bubble Bobble’s enemy-nobbling mechanic appears to have its roots in Universal's seminal 1980 coin-op, Space Panic, where aliens are killed by first digging a hole, waiting for the enemies to fall in, and then bashing them while they’re trapped. Bubble Bobble gives this idea a bouncy new twist; this time, you blow bubbles, which encase enemies on contact, and then rush up and jump on them -...

A tough brawler with attitude, Taito's Renegade appeared on home computers in 1987. Ryan takes a look back...
"So you're on a train platform, when all of a sudden this gang surrounds you. Before they can do anything, you rush up to the first guy and - bam - punch him right in the face. He just stands there, totally stunned. But then this other bloke comes up behind you, and he's got a baseball bat. You back kick him, and this stuns him, too.
"Then you turn around, grab the git by his jacket, and - get this - you knee him in the balls and throw him straight over your shoulder like a trash bag. Whack! He crashes into the first guy, who's still stunned from having his nose broken, and the pair of them - wait, cos this the best bit - go flying off the edge of the train platform.

Videogame tie-in Frankie Goes To Hollywood was one of the most bizarre games of the 1980s. Ryan takes a look back...
Imagine this scenario: it’s the mid 1980s, and your massive, chunky BT telephone suddenly rings. It’s the boss of Ocean Software, and he has a project for you: design a game based on the pop band Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
What sort of game would you come up with? A platform game, perhaps? A Space Invaders shooter with a bleepy, 8-bit rendition of Relax playing in the background? Most game designers, I reckon, would have knocked out something quick and unimaginative - after all, it’s only being sold on the licence, isn’t it?
Instead, Denton Designs made one of the most unusual and innovative games of the 8-bit era.

Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life," the jaunty singalong that first appeared in the comedy troupe's 1979 film The Life of Brian, has long been a staple at funerals for its optimistic tone, bubbly melody and lyrics about one's own demise. But in a new survey of funeral directors, the track has become the most popular song to play at British funerals, according to the Telegraph.
The survey, based on more than 30,000 funerals, found the song beating out Frank Sinatra's "My Way," Robbie Williams' "Angel...

Saturdays popstar Frankie Bridge dominated Strictly Come Dancing's Movie Week, racking up a total of 45 from the judges for her Paso Doble.
Bridge and pro partner Kevin Clifton topped the judges' leaderboard with their West Side Story routine, which earned the singer the first '10' mark of the series from guest judge Donny Osmond.
"If they ever do a remake of West Side Story, you're perfect," said Osmond.
Head judge Len Goodman told the popstar: "Frankie goes to Hollywood and gives us a blockbuster. Best dance you've done."
Darcey Bussell added: "You're on fire! I loved seeing that side of you. I promise you, I didn't think you had it in you to be that feisty woman. You didn't lose character at all. You created some beautiful shapes."
Craig Revel Horwood called the routine "absolutely dynamic".
It is the second week that Bridge and Clifton have topped the leaderboard already this series.

This Grenadier Guard's fancy moves have caused quite the controversy.
It’s easy to forget that those charming guards outside Buckingham Palace (you know, the guys dressed in red with the funny hats, who don’t flinch no matter how obnoxious tourists act) are actual soldiers—fully operational soldiers tasked with protecting the Queen and following the rules. Mainly: Be alert, be disciplined, and probably don’t dance.
Well, isn’t this a cheeky little bugger?
Watch one sentry put his own little twist (literally) on the standard pacing:

When the queen's away, the guards will play! At least, that's what appears to be the case for this dancing-on-duty soldier outside Buckingham Palace! On Aug. 20, YouTube user Andy Richards uploaded a video of the Queen's Guard member pirouetting, walking in slow motion and behaving very atypically for someone holding this position. Bystanders were delighted to see the uniformed guard cutting loose a bit as he covered his assigned area during a portion of his two-hour shift. Per Metro U.K., the guard is informed prior to each shift, "You may not eat, sleep, smoke, stand easy, sit or lie down during your tour of duty." (Dancing isn't explicitly listed among these forbidden...

BFI to show 78-minute film Will You Dance With Me? – shot by director in 1984 with video camera in gay club in east London
Almost exactly 20 years after his death, a previously unseen film by Derek Jarman has come to light, shot inside a gay nightclub in east London, and will be premiered next month.
At 78 minutes in length, the film is unedited, experimental footage that the avant garde director shot in 1984 at Benjy's, a former nightclub in Mile End to a soundtrack of, among other artists, Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Jarman, inspired at the time by his newly purchased video camera, was exploring ideas for his film-maker friend Ron Peck, experimenting in how to capture dancing for Peck's feature film Empire State, made around three years later.
Peck decided to release the tape, entitled Will You Dance with Me?, to coincide with other events this year celebrating Jarman – a retrospective...

Film classification board responding to pressure from parents worried about sexual imagery available to children online

After winning Best Musical at the Tony Awards this summer, Cyndi Lauper's "Kinky Boots" now competes at the Grammys for Best Musical Theater Album. Can it triumph again? Lauper made her Grammy Awards debut in 1984, winning Best New Artist against Corey Hart, Sheila E., Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and The Judds. She is one of only of eight artists to be nominated for the top four categories in the General Field and win Best New Artist. The others are Bobbi Gentry (1967), Christopher Cross (1980), Tracy Chapman (1988), Mariah Carey (1990), Paula Cole (1997), Amy Winehouse (2007), and Fun. (2012). Lauper has received 14 nominations in various genres fields ranging from Pop to Rock to Dance to Blues to Arranging. All but one of those bids resulted in losses, but this year she may add Musical Show to her diverse list of Grammy field nods. At the Grammys, unlike the Tonys, the Best Musical Theater Album award includes both new Music.

The 1980s were an odd decade – you had to be there really. Music videos really took off in this watershed period and boy was there some bizarre efforts.
Many have become classics. Throughout the 80s a video became an essential accompaniment to the single. From their humble beginnings and low production values typified by Abba – who let their simple lyrics generate popularity – through to big budget pieces like Michael Jackson’s Thriller, songs became synonymous with their video.
Along the way there were psychedelic and downright unusual offerings by the biggest names in the business. Some used their videos to break taboos. The 80s gave us a black Jesus through Madonna whilst Frankie Goes to Hollywood tackled topics as diverse as the Cold War and gay hedonism.
It wasn’t long before every pop music video seemed to have crazy costumes and gimmicky premises. Animation too soon strayed into the music industry.

Lily Allen will reportedly provide the soundtrack for this year's John Lewis Christmas campaign.
The returning singer - due to release her new album early in 2014 - will cover Keane's 2004 hit 'Somewhere Only We Know' for the adverts, according to Music Week.
It is thought that a final decision on the soundtrack has yet to be made, with other tracks still in contention for the opportunity.
Allen would be following in the footsteps of Ellie Goulding, Amelia Warner and Gabrielle Aplin, who have each enjoyed chart success after featuring on the commercials.
Aplin - who covered Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'The Power of Love' for the 2012 festive adverts - scored a UK number one single with the cover.
The department store's latest campaign is expected to air for the first time in late October or early November.

With Frankenstein’s monster returning to challenge vampires, werewolves and other supernatural creatures for cinematic dominance, Fox has slowly been putting together the pieces for its take on Victor Von Frankenstein and his most famous creation. The studio – and director Paul McGuigan – have turned to a man who has become used to playing a man of science, as X-Men: First Class’s James McAvoy has won the role of Victor.Working from Max Landis’ script, McGuigan’s film will blend Mary Shelley’s original tale with an expanded look at the Franken-universe told through the eyes of Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) and through the filter of the old pop-culture take on the characters.Though Fox had wanted this one rolling before competing Franken-movies such as I, Frankenstein, the San Diego Comic-Con panel for that Aaron Eckhart film suggests that McGuigan and co have lost this particular race. Eccentric and sometimes ungainly, here are seven 80s videogames that were full of innovative or outlandish ideas...
Placing our rose-tinted goggles of nostalgia aside for one moment, it's fair to say that a large percentage of games from the 1980s were painfully simplistic. But in among all the clones of popular arcade machines, which were ubiquitous on computers and consoles throughout the decade, there were legion lesser-known games which were full of innovative ideas and a sense of ambition that far outstripped their technical resources.
Not all of these ideas necessarily came off in the way they were intended, admittedly; while some are utterly brilliant, in other instances, their outlandish concepts were let down by some iffy execution. This list is devoted to the more eccentric games of the 1980s; the ones full of imagination and wit, and which, although not necessarily discussed much today,...

Be warned: murder, racism, nazism, bestiality, sex, drugs, and religion are just a few of the controversial subjects contained within this list of The 20 Most Controversial Songs Of All Time. As we all know, sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll makes the world go round and yet music remains a source of controversial content within modern society.
Since Elvis first shamelessly thrust his hips in the face of shocked housewives around the world, attempts have been made to censor or destroy music that has upset the moral majority. This list acknowledges the songs that caused the most upset and were often either censored or banned altogether so do not view if easily offended, swear words may be used!
So, in no particular order, let the controversy commence…..

‘American Idol’ is back and in full swing. Get ready for a season of new judges, hidden talent — and a lot of tone deaf contestants. Sounds like fun, right, HollywoodLifers?
The twelfth season of American Idol kicked off Jan. 16, and with it came new judges Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, and the beginning of weeks worth of drama. I wonder if Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson know what they’re in for?
The two-night premiere started with my personal favorite part of the whole show: the auditions. Let’s take a look at the judges, America’s next stars and some people we’d rather forget.
Who Was Terrible
The auditions are all about separating the good from the bad — and there were plenty of ‘em in New York City.
Fifteen-year-old James Bae admitted he sings in his room in preparation for his sure-to-be filled concert halls. This Bielieber...

The Justice Collective have topped the charts to become the 2012 Christmas number one, with their Hillsborough tribute single.
The Justice Collective's version of 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' sold more than 269,000 copies, which saw it comfortably outsell 'X Factor' winner James Arthur's debut single Impossible by 45,000, according to figures from the Official Charts Company.
Robbie Williams is one of the artists featured on the single
The reworking of the Hollies' 1969 hit took the festive top spot to cap a memorable week for campaigners, friends and family of the 96 victims of the disaster at Sheffield Wednesday's ground during an Fa Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989.
A new police investigation into their deaths was announced by Home Secretary Theresa May and the High Court quashed accidental death verdicts recorded by the original inquest into the tragedy at Sheffield Wednesday's ground. A new inquest will now be held.

His Ivansxtc was a searing indictment of Hollywood. Now Bernard Rose has adapted another Tolstoy story – and turned it into an indictment of capitalist America
Ten years ago, Bernard Rose proclaimed that digital technology would change the face of movie-making, and he made a film to prove it. Ivansxtc, released in 2000, wasn't just a calling card for digital cinema: it was also Rose's goodbye card to the industry that had previously shackled him – a scathing critique of Hollywood rendered in a new, raw aesthetic.
Ivansxtc chronicled the final days of a Hollywood agent, played by Danny Huston and based on Rose's real-life agent, Jay Moloney, a cocaine-addicted golden boy who killed himself in 1999, aged 35. Faced with death, Huston consoles himself with drugs and prostitutes, while his colleagues treat his impending exit as an inconvenience and an opportunity. The film is a glorious mix of sleaze and grace, a tragedy and...

I didn’t go to Reading, or Leeds, this year. I haven’t woken this morning in a field. No, I’ve woken this morning surrounded by empty cans wearing pyjama bottoms and a Converge T Shirt. Most painful of all about my not having gone to Reading, or Leeds, most heartachingly painful of all, is that I didn’t see The Cure play a majestic three hour set.
Watching them from the comfort of my bed, attired in the aforementioned, on BBC iPlayer is not the same. Hangover breakfast of champions or not; gammon steak and scrambled egg (I like protein) splashed with mustard and red sauce. Chased of course with a coffee and a cigarette.
However, by way of compensation I have been gifted with something this week. That something is Wild Nothing’s sophomore effort Nocturne. How this is compensation will be made clear soon.

'Teen Mom' had a beach party tonight, and everyone was invited!
Maci invited herself to baby daddy' Ryan's family vacation, Amber welcomed maybe-boyfriend Gary and daughter Leah to her Malibu rehab, and Farrah found plenty of ways to flaunt her new boobs in her new Sunshine State home.
The only ones without an ocean view tonight were Catelynn and Tyler, who were stuck at home with babysitting duty again.
That's right, folks: Butch -- the man! the myth! the mullet! -- is out of jail and crashing again at his affianced son and stepdaughter's pad.
After a 90-day stint behind bars (either for testing positive for drugs or violating the no-contact order forbidding him from seeing his wife -- who can keep track?), Butch promised Tyler and Catelynn he'd behave...and then he broke his curfew!
"Dude, it's almost midnight and I'm sitting up waiting for my 50-year-old father," complained world-weary teen Tyler.

It’s a bit strange when a director can gather some of today’s best actors for an ensemble romantic comedy. Valentine’s Day came out, and again with New Year’s Eve. Both were critical flops, but the former was a hit. The latter is opening in theaters today. Now comes yet another ensemble romantic-comedy, only thing is, this movie doesn’t revolve around a holiday. Because we all know what happens on Halloween. What to Expect When You’re Expecting takes a comedic look at everything about babies, adoption, pregnancy (the first, second, and third trimesters) and everything that happens in between.
Check out the trailer for What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Check it out in HD on Yahoo! Movies.

The new comedy "Take Me Home Tonight" celebrates the 1980s and all its excesses, from Mercedes-worship to Frankie Goes To Hollywood telling us all to relax.

This was recorded last year at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where Carmen had its premiere in 1875. Adrian Noble's production, hampered by its vortex-cum-bullring set, doesn't ideally anchor the work in the French naturalist tradition, but Anna Caterina Antonacci and Andrew Richards generate such a terrific erotic charge as Carmen and José that you understand why its first audiences found it obscene.
