John Carpenter doesn’t get the hype around Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer.
“Oppenheimer was Ok. It was alright,” the Master of Horror said in an interview for music journalist Larry Fitzmaurice’s Last Donut of the Night newsletter. “Everyone’s praising it as the movie of the century — I don’t know about that.”
When asked if he liked Nolan’s movies in general, Carpenter responded, “Yeah, I guess, sure.”
However, Carpenter was impressed by Bradley Cooper’s “terrific” Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, which he “enjoyed a great deal.”
Combined with his previous comments about Barbie, we can count Carpenter as among the relatively few moviegoers who didn’t get the Barbenheimer phenomenon as a whole. In October of last year, he said Barbie wasn’t for “my generation” and admitted the “patriarchy business” went “right over my head.”

John Carpenter has announced his new album, Lost Themes IV: Noir, a non-soundtrack release arriving May 3rd via Sacred Bones Records. To build anticipation, the filmmaker and composer has shared the lead single, “My Name Is Death,” and its accompanying music video. Stream it below.
The upcoming album reunites the horror master with his frequent collaborators, son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. A follow-up to 2021’s Lost Themes III: Weeping Ghost, Noir promises to be unlike anything the trio has done before — a stylistic shift that enhances Carpenter’s signature atmospheric synth with a distinctly “noir” vibe.
The 10-track project is a tribute to the film noir genre, with songs inspired by some of Carpenter’s favorite films. Rather than recreating these old soundtracks, the album translates the haunting, dramatic orchestral scores of ’40s-era Hollywood pulp into Carpenter’s guitar-heavy synth soundscapes. “Some of the music is heavy guitar riffs,...

Following the success of their Halloween trilogy, writer/director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse re-teamed to tackle another esteemed horror property: The Exorcist.
The Exorcist: Believer possesses home video with an audio commentary by David Gordon Green, co-writer Peter Sattler, special makeup FX designer Christopher Nelson, and executive producer Ryan Turek, among other extras.
Here are 15 things I learned from The Exorcist: Believer commentary…
1. The film’s opening soundscape is inspired by a meditation app.
The film’s opening logos are accompanied by droning sounds inspired by calming music on a meditation app that Green uses.
“I am a fan of the mid-afternoon meditation shutdown, and I listen to a little app that’s full of singing bells and chimes and little brain cleansers, so I thought nothing better for our brainwaves than to open our movie with some of the same.”
‘Brainwaves’ was also the code name adopted for the production.

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a movie so cold and miserable you feel it in your bones as you watch it.
Pitting a group of U.S. civilians at an Arctic research station against a shape-shifting alien that can convincingly imitate other living organisms, Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror flick notoriously bombed upon its initial release in theaters. Over 40 years later, though, it's now justly regarded as a masterclass in genre filmmaking. With its incredibly gory practical creature effects (which are as gross as they ever were) and bleak-as-hell atmosphere, Carpenter's nihilistic exercise in paranoia has aged far more gracefully than the gung-ho Reagan-era entertainment the masses were flocking to at the time it was made.
As a film ahead of its time that would go on to find a much larger fanbase thanks to home media, it was inevitable that Carpenter's "The Thing" would return in some new form...

John Carpenter has unleashed the latest film score reimagining from his upcoming album Anthology II (Movie Themes 1976-1988) with “69th St. Bridge” from 1981’s Escape from New York.
The composition memorably soundtracks a thrilling car chase sequence from the dystopian, Kurt Russell-starring action movie, which was co-written, directed, and scored by Carpenter. However, the new reworking still manages to squeeze even more tension into the mix with help from Carpenter’s go-to collaborators, his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. Stream “69th St. Bridge” below.
Anthology II arrives on October 6th via Sacred Bones Records and features new takes on Carpenter’s music from films such as The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live. In August, he shared the collection’s opening track, “Chariots of Pumpkins” from 1982’s Halloween III. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Carpenter’s first Anthology project dropped in 2017.

John Carpenter is responsible for directing some of the greatest films of all time, including horror hits like "Halloween" and "The Thing," as well as action favorites like "Escape form New York" and "Big Trouble in Little China." But Carpenter often doesn't only sit behind the camera as a filmmaker. The legendary director is also one hell of a composer, and he's been responsible for creating the music for most of his own films. That iconic "Halloween" theme? You can thank Carpenter for creating that on a tight deadline. And the haunting piano-heavy composition from the genre-defining slasher is just one of many tracks that will be found on John Carpenter's latest "Anthology" vinyl compilation album.

John Carpenter is back.
He doesn’t have a new movie, but he does have a new album, which might be just as exciting. “Anthology II: Movie Themes 1976 – 1988,” is a follow-up to his 2017 album “Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998” and was once again recorded with his constant musical collaborators, son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies.
They take classic moments from his earlier scores and rearrange them with modern instrumentation and additional flourishes. It is out on Oct. 6 from Sacred Bones.
But what makes “Anthology II” particularly thrilling is that it contains three unreleased tracks from “The Thing” that were recorded by Carpenter before he hired Ennio Morricone to work on the movie. There are still a bunch of Carpenter cues in the finished version of “The Thing,” with Morricone using some of his unreleased music from the 1982 film (recently named the second-greatest movie of that decade by IndieWire) for Quentin Tarantino...

First established in 1992, the Chainsaw Awards honor works and artists in a genre frequently overlooked by traditional organizations and critics groups. Past recipients include Wes Craven, George A. Romero, Lupita Nyong’o, Anthony Hopkins and Elisabeth Moss.
“Nope,” Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Us,” received the most nominations of any film in Chainsaw Award contention, with 10 nominations including best wide release movie and best director. Other nominees include “Barbarian,” “Pearl,” “Hellraiser,” “Chucky” and “Yellowjackets.” Fangoria also introduced two new categories this year: Best Short and Best Cinematography.

John Carpenter has nothing left to prove.
The writer-director hasn’t made a movie in 13 years, and yet he’s asked about his work incessantly by reporters, fans and fellow filmmakers. And now, here I am, asking again.
Sitting in a comfy-looking chair in the living room of his Los Angeles home, he’s got cable news running on a TV just out of sight, and sometimes, when a question doesn’t strike his fancy, his answer will carry on, while his eyes dart toward the flickering box. “It was a Western they wanted to make. I was unsure about what I would do with it. … God, Iran just hung a protester, man.”
The occasion of this conversation is his upcoming 75th birthday, Jan. 16, which also marks nearly 50 years since the release of his first movie, the USC student-film-turned-feature “Dark Star.” Since then, Carpenter’s subversive genre films have inspired decades of knockoffs,...

Music is intrinsically and irrevocably intertwined with cinema; it is never more vital than in horror. What builds mood, tension, and fear better than sound design and an unsettling score?

The "Halloween" franchise is cyclical. Ever since John Carpenter's original made a splash in 1978, producers and franchise custodians have been hoping to catch lightning in a bottle again by returning to the same fundamental premise: psychopath Michael Myers cuts a brutal swath through a town of innocents on Halloween night. It's been attempted before without original final girl Jamie Lee Curtis as the eternally-stalked Laurie Strode, but this time she's along for the ride in David Gordon Green's revival "H40" trilogy, which gets rid of all pesky sequels in between '78 and now.
Myers' return to Haddonfield and subsequent killing spree was spread over Green's "Halloween" and "Halloween Kills," and "Ends" picks up a year after those events. Laurie's daughter is dead along with a handful of Haddonfieldians, and a severely injured Michael has once again eluded death. The Boogeyman resurfaces in the present day upon meeting a...

Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green directed Halloween Ends from a screenplay he wrote with Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier. They crafted the following story:

Halloween Ends arrives like the undercooked dessert of a three-course meal nobody much enjoyed—but what garnish these John Carpenter scores were! Unlikely as it is he’ll ever make another movie (whatever my Twitter feed’s bi-weekly incantations) the musical contributions proved a satisfying, proper means for this American master to exercise some creative muscle in his 70s, an age he has looked since the first Halloween opened 44 years ago.
Composed and performed with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies, the LP-length, 21-track effort traces familiar paths so it can (seemingly) conclude them; a title like “Laurie’s Theme Ends” can hold just the slightest weight for those who play the 1978 original on loop this time of year. Does any of that carry through the movie? Let’s be honest: I’ll probably never find out. As in Carpenter’s Lost Themes trilogy, it might be best...

Plot: Four years after the tragedy that took place in Halloween Kills, Laurie Strode is finally ready to move on. Yet Michael Myers legacy isn’t ready to let her go just yet.
Review: In 1978, moviegoers discovered one of the most iconic figures in horror, his name was Michael Myers. Halloween, the John Carpenter-directed classic, became synonymous with the holiday. It launched the career of the film’s star, Jamie Lee Curtis. Now, we are finally coming to the end. David Gordon Green has offered up his take on Haddonfield with Halloween (2018), the divisive Halloween Kills, and finally, Halloween Ends. It certainly appears to be the final film in the franchise. Yet any self-respecting horror fan knows that means evil never truly dies for the inevitable reboot/remake. However, it is likely the final film for Ms. Curtis. And she gives us one last showdown with the man behind the mask.

Halloween Ends isn’t really going to be the end of the Halloween franchise. As long as there is still money to be made off of Michael Myers, we’re still going to be getting new Halloween movies. But this movie probably is going to be the last time Jamie Lee Curtis ever plays franchise heroine Laurie Strode – and in a new promo video, Curtis gets choked up while talking about her last day on the Halloween Ends set. The day she said goodbye to a character she has been playing, off and on, for forty-four years. You can watch the promo video right here:
#HalloweenEnds is almost here, and @jamieleecurtis was kind enough to share her experience of the last day on set, and just how much Laurie Strode means to her.

Jamie Lee Curtis has one more round of full-force fighting in her to bring Laurie Strode to life in Halloween Ends, the final installment of the decades-old franchise. Ahead of the film’s release on Oct. 14 via Universal Pictures, one last trailer has been shared to preview the incoming cataclysmic conclusion as Curtis prepares to retire the iconic final girl for good.
Michael Meyers disappeared four years prior to the events of the film, which rounds out the revival trilogy led by 2018’s Halloween and 2021’s Halloween Kills, all directed by David Gordon Green.

Michael Myers isn’t looking as good as he used to. In 2018’s Halloween (watch it Here), the latex of his mask was deteriorating – which makes sense, since it was the same mask he wore during his 1978 killing spree. The ending of that movie left the mask with burn damage for Halloween Kills (watch that one Here). Now four years have passed between the events of Halloween Kills and the upcoming sequel Halloween Ends, and when we catch up with Myers this time we’ll find that his mask is showing more wear and tear… and has even gotten moldy. Trick or Treat Studios will be selling replicas of Halloween Ends‘ moldy Myers mask, and are going to start accepting pre-orders (for the price of 79.99) at that link on September 15th. In the meantime, you can see an image of the Trick or Treat Studios replica mask at the bottom of this article.

Did we really need a new take of Stephen King’s 1980 novel Firestarter? The 1984 movie starring Drew Barrymore was reasonably compelling in that way that most early King movies were, if not particularly exceptional or memorable. (Aside from the highly unfortunate “red-face” casting of George C. Scott as a Native American government hit man, which, yikes!) And some may remember that John Carpenter had originally been set to direct that first adaptation of King’s story about a young girl with a penchant for psychokinetic pyrotechnics, yet was removed from...

John Carpenter’s current musical output is so voluminous it’s almost easy to take him for granted. After a recent run on the Halloween sequels—and before this year’s Halloween Ends—he, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies reunited for Firestarter, a less-than-promising Stephen King adaptation buoyed, at least briefly, by a full score from the ever-pleasing trio.
A quick skim through this 17-song, 43-minute soundtrack bears no hint of phoning it in for a quick check. What instead emerges is a strong mix of synth lines, menacing percussion, sharp guitars, and a catchy leitmotif—a real album, basically. Will it be enough to stream a flat-looking spin on mid-tier Stephen King? I think that question answers itself, which is why I’ll just direct you to the tunes:

Davies to create the invigorating synth music for "Halloween" (2018) and its sequel, 2021's "Halloween Kills," and look to reunite once again for the final entry in David Gordon Green's slasher trilogy, 2022's "Halloween Ends."

Nearly 40 years after the release of Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter adaptation, we have a new take on Stephen King’s classic story, this time with Keith Thomas (The Vigil) at the helm. And while this new iteration effectively modernizes some of the concepts and themes at the heart of King’s story and features several killer set pieces that showcase Thomas’ capabilities as a director to boot, where Firestarter (2022) falls short is in its screenplay by Scott Teems that never quite nails the heart of the characters that originally made King’s story so compelling in the first place. Ryan Kiera Armstrong definitely makes for a compelling Charlie McGee this time around—I just wish we were given more reason to root for her character than what we see in this version of Firestarter, resulting in an adaptation that is solid overall, but does feel like it falls short in some ways as well.
