That Medici bitch was a name Catherine was called for no reason and one she subsequently earned on her own accord.
The Serpent Queen Season 1 Episode 1 introduced two versions of The Black Queen, Catherine de Medici, the longest ruling monarch in the history of France.
Catherine was born under a bad sign, and she vowed from the start never to squander her good fortune.
I haven't read Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, but the showrunner noted that while the book provided the framework for The Serpent Queen, he infused The Black Queen with her acerbic wit.
Catherine's on-screen presence is teased beautifully with a castle staff frightened to death of her, plucking a nobody they call "It" to service her weeks before her son is to be crowned king, a time of enormous preparation and great stress.
Don't look in the mirror. She'll suck the soul right out ya.

If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.
However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...

Catherine de Medici is one of the lesser known Queens despite how her family has impacted popular culture centuries later.
It's high time this misunderstood woman, the longest-reigning monarch in France's history, gets a rich and entertaining adaption of her life.
A historical drama with an edge, based in part on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda and brought to life by writer and showrunner Justin Haythe, The Serpent Queen puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici's (Samantha Morton) rise to power.

Taken into care, abused, objectified: the actor had a traumatic start to life – and her career. Why does she feel such a strong connection to her new TV role: privileged, notorious Catherine de Medici?
Not so long ago, Samantha Morton was given a relic from her past – her application form to join Nottingham’s Central Junior Television Workshop. It had asked her to list what she wanted to be when she grew up. Prime minister, she wrote, followed by novelist and actor. She laughs, remembering it. We had been talking about whether she might go into politics one day – not such a leap for an actor who is intensely political (the “novelist” bit might have to wait). But it also seems to sum up so much else about the young Sam I’m picturing, defiant blue eyes staring out from the scrappy passport photo that would have been stapled to the corner of the sheet.

‘The Serpent Queen’: Beth Goddard Set As Series Regular, Alex Heath To Recur In Starz’s Period Drama
Exclusive: Beth Goddard (Manhunt) is set as a series regular opposite Samantha Morton in Starz’s The Serpent Queen, an eight-part period drama about Catherine de Medici. Additionally, Alex Heath (Home) recurs in the series from writer and executive producer Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road), Francis Lawrence & Erwin Stoff. Production is underway in France.
Based on Leonie Frieda’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France, The Serpent Queen is described as “a cunning account of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown. Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Catherine de Medici (Morton) is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to conceive. Despite current travel restrictions, a flurry of high-profile U.S. films and series are set to shoot in France, including Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” and Netflix’s “The Gray Man.” Starz mini-series “The Serpent Queen,” meanwhile, has been shooting in southern France since April.
Paris hadn’t hosted any big American shoots for over a year as France struggled to ride out the various waves of the pandemic. The country finally emerged from a lengthy lockdown, lifting most restrictions as Covid-19 cases began dropping and more of the population received vaccinations. A 9 p.m. curfew is still in place but doesn’t apply to film productions, which are allowed to film at night with a certificate.
“John Wick: Chapter 4,” directly by Chad Stahelski, will soon begin filming in France. Keanu Reeves, who headlines the action-packed franchise and plays a retired hitman seeking vengeance, is now in France...
