A powerful portrait of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be on permanent display at the National Portrait Gallery, UK. The news was revealed by Misan Harriman, the couple’s close friend, who took the photo at the One Young World Summit in Manchester on September 5, 2022. Ironically, the image will hang in the gallery that Kate Middleton has been patron of since 2012.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have another honor to add to their extensive list; this one will be permanent.
The couple, who actively engage with Nigerian culture, just returned from a thrilling visit to Nigeria, where they were bestowed with gifts and participated in various events.
Meghan, in particular, was honored with a new title that seems to rival that of her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. Kate is married to Prince William, which makes her Princess Catherine.
Meghan was bestowed with a unique and intriguing new title by the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, adding to her already impressive list of titles.
She is now known as Ada Mazi, a title that holds a special place in the Igbo ancestral palace in Nigeria, essentially making her a Princess.

Surreal. That’s how Misan Harriman describes his first time at the Academy Awards earlier this year. Six years before, his wife had bought him a Fujifilm X100 for his 40th birthday and encouraged him to start taking pictures with it. Then there he was, surrounded by the global industry’s most overachieving, himself an Oscar-nominated director.
He had always loved film, having been raised on ’80s and ’90s cinema like The Lost Boys, Big Trouble in Little China and Stand By Me. He describes Home Alone, of all things, as “more than entertainment for troubled kids like me,” and will share his connection to the classic movie’s study of “trauma response” and the way it, and films like it, saved him. Born in Nigeria in 1977, Harriman was the only Black kid at his British boarding school. “With my kind of neurodiversity, I’m not supposed to be good at anything,...

Misan Harriman’s work as a photographer runs the gamut from everyday slices of life on the streets of London to celebrity portraiture in exotic locales. He loves both extremes, and insists he will always mix them, so stark is the contrast between the worlds in which he operates. As part of our celebration of Harriman’s work for this year’s class of Deadline Disruptors, we asked him to pick some of his favorite shots and explain a little about the magic behind each of them.

Meghan Markle stepped out in a recycled yellow dress during her and Prince Harry’s three-day trip to Nigeria. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may not have spent Mother’s Day with their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 2, it’s been said Meghan honored them with her clothing. However, a PR expert says Meghan’s colorful look may have had a “much deeper meaning.”
Meghan wore a yellow dress with ties to big Archie and Lilibet moments on Mother’s Day
The Duchess of Sussex pulled a previously seen dress from her closet for Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024, in Nigeria. Although she and Harry weren’t with Archie and Lilibet to celebrate, Meghan seemingly honored them with her outfit choice.

Some birthday gifts just aren’t going to happen, even for British royalty. Prince Archie, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son who turned 5 on May 6, 2024, reportedly missed out on a “superb” birthday gift costing thousands of dollars from his grandfather, King Charles III. The reason, according to a royal author and commentator, is because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were concerned it’d remind Archie too much of royal life.
King Charles wanted to give Archie an elaborate playhouse for his birthday
In the lead-up to Archie’s birthday, Tom Quinn, author of Gilded Youth, a book about growing up in the royal family, discussed potential birthday gifts. Particularly one from King Charles with a hefty price tag.
The king, Quinn told Express, “suggested that he give Archie a playhouse. Not a plastic child’s playhouse, but a superb hand-made shepherd’s hut, complete with bunks and bookshelves.

A number of major names from the U.K. film and TV world and beyond have donated items — and their own time — to an auction raising money for Gaza.

Among the lots up for grabs when the auction goes live on April 2 is the chance to have Swinton “read you a soothing bedtime story over Zoom,” a porridge masterclass with O’Connor who will “teach you how to make the perfect bowl” (and apparently get a glimpse of his secret porridge recipe), a chat about astrology with “Sex Education” star Wood, a “restorative drink” with “Saltburn’s” Oliver, and tickets to...

After missing the chance to accept his first Oscar in person, following his win for Best Live-Action Short for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Wes Anderson has addressed the circumstances surrounding his absence and what he would’ve said in his speech.
“If I could have been there, I (along with [producer] Steven Rales) would have said ‘Thank You’ to: the family of Roald Dahl; the team at Netflix; Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Ralph [Fiennes] and Ben Kingsley and Dev [Patel] … and more [of the cast and crew],” Anderson stated. “And also: If I had not met Owen Wilson in a corridor at the University of Texas between classes when I was 18 years old, I would certainly not be receiving this award tonight — but unfortunately Steven and I are in Germany and we start shooting our new movie early tomorrow morning, so I did not actually receive the award [in person] or get a chance to say any of that.”

After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Anderson’s Oscar achievement comes as a bit of a full circle moment for the auteur, coming just over two decades since his career as a professional filmmaker kicked off with the premiere of his short “Bottle Rocket...

Ceasefire pins among Oscar guests and nominees were numerous on this afternoon’s red carpet with Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef, Oscar nominated supporting actor Mark Ruffalo from that pic, as well as Barbie “What Was I Made For?” songwriting team Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell donning them.
Youssef told Deadline, “This is for Artists for Ceasefire” about the pin.
“We have a growing list of so many artists who want a permanent immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” the actor added.
“To get really universal about it, it’s about stop killing kids,” he continued.
“We’re using our voices to speak to people’s hearts,” he added, “we want people to have safety and justice.”
“It’s obvious something a lot of people have a lot of opinions about, and I think there can be a place and time to process feelings,” Youssef said, speaking about the divided political situation in Israel and Gaza.

Hundreds of protesters have shut down a major section of Hollywood during the Oscars red carpet, turning Hollywood’s biggest night into a traffic nightmare. With just a few minutes ahead of the telecast’s scheduled start time, much of the ballroom is uncharacteristically empty and people are running to their seats.
There was a growing sense of anxiety from production staffers and publicists on the red carpet that tonight’s Oscars will not start on time due to the gridlock. The broadcast itself kicked off five minutes late.
Protesters shut down Sunset Boulevard between Vine Street and La Brea Avenue. They marched down the street with signs that read “No awards for genocide” and drove school buses covered with Palestinian flags. Police ordered the protest to disperse and waited on Sunset Boulevard with battering rams.
Executives, such as Bob Iger, waited an hour to walk the red carpet due to the traffic jam.

How do you capture Jenne Casarotto? She was at the intersection of theatre, film and television. It all, seemingly, swirled around her.
Not just around her.
It was the brilliant team that she assembled at Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, the agency that’s been at the epicenter of UK arts culture for over three decades. Correction: The company’s reach extended far beyond the environs of London’s Soho.
One would see her in Venice, Cannes, Toronto and Sydney. One would not be at all surprised to be at a screening at, let’s say, Sundance, and there’d be a tap on the shoulder when the lights came up. “That was great stuff, wasn’t it?” She’d say gleefully.
It was a bit of a test because she’d expect you to be honest with her. Well, it was godawful, actually, and she’d nod sagely, her eyes twinkling behind her specs.

Wes Anderson is long overdue an Oscar. The iconic director has been nominated seven times and lost on all seven occasions. He earned his eighth nomination this year for Best Live Action Short Film for his Roald Dahl adaptation “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” (shared with Steven Rales).
However, Anderson could find himself trumped again as there is an impactful, emotional, heartfelt obstacle in his way: Misan Harriman‘s “The After.” Harriman, who rose to prominence as a photographer, has created one of the year’s most talked about short films with “The After.” The Netflix short follows David Oyelowo as a man who suffers an extraordinary loss and attempts to go through the ensuing healing process.
The movie has earned plenty of A-list supporters, with Angelina Jolie, Jeff Bridges, and Oprah all making it known how much they adored the tragic short film. Meghan Markle also conducted a...

If the Academy judged features by the same standards that they do live action shorts, the best picture ballot would be full of starry, quasi-political issue movies: well-meaning but manipulative films like “Father Stu” and “The Janes.” In this category, it’s the message that matters to Oscar voters, which makes this year’s “2024 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action” program (available exclusively in theaters from ShortsTV) one of the most frustrating lineups in recent memory. Or it would, if not for the presence of one genuinely brilliant, liberatingly unserious nominee among them. That would be “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” the best of several delightful Roald Dahl adaptations director Wes Anderson cooked up for Netflix … but we’ll come to that in due time.

The film comes from UK indie Doc Hearts in association with Paramount Television International Studios. The doc will debut exclusively on Paramount+ globally in early 2025. It was initially unveiled as a three-part doc series — the first commission from...

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

Marking his directorial debut, director Misan Harriman opens The After with a familiar sight. Dayo (David Oyelowo) is a workaholic father who wears a suit and talks business on the phone, even while with his daughter. As he makes the decision to postpone a meeting in order to spend time with his family, that happiness is changed in a flash when tragedy strikes in violent ways.
The short film then cuts to a later time, with Dayo now living a solitary life working as a rideshare driver. He picks up various passengers, many of whom carry their own problems that he can relate to. As this short centres on him, Oyelowo delivers a terrific performance as the man pushing down his inner pain,...

Directorial debut and Oscar Nominated short The After from Misan Harriman is a visceral look at the traumatic nature of grief and the power of acts of empathy. The already well established photographer exercised his cultivated eye for aesthetics, an instinctive comprehension of imagery and a tender understanding of the human condition to bring the harrowing tale of a man forced to deal with insurmountable grief to the screen. Streaming on Netflix, The After has already, and will no doubt continue to, resonated with swathes of people as it taps into universal struggles with the agony of loss and captures the unfaltering way in which the world continues to move around us despite our innermost turmoil. After successfully reaching out to David Oyelowo on Instagram, who embodies his role with heartbreaking authenticity, Harriman embarked on a whirlwind collaborative journey filming on the streets of London and working within a whole new medium of creative expression.

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.
The official nominees from “Spider-Verse” are Dos Santos’ fellow directors Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, producing partners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller,...

The State of the Race
One thing that should always be of note when it comes to the Shorts and Animation branch is that it probably does the best job of looking at the work before looking at the name behind it. Some Oscar winners that directed and/or produced Best Live Action Short contenders that made the 2024 Oscars shortlist, but did not get nominated include Pedro Almodóvar, Alfonso Cuarón, and Emma Thompson. If an established name wants to come for the awards most tailored to burgeoning filmmakers, they best come correct.

There are a host of big-name players in this year’s Best Live Action Short Film Oscar race with Wes Anderson‘s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” Pedro Almódovar‘s “Strange Way of Life,” and the John Travolta-produced “The Shepherd” all in the mix. But Tom Stuart‘s quirky British short “Good Boy” has a big name (and a big performance) of its own: Ben Whishaw.
The short follows Whishaw as a down-on-his-luck man who tries to turn his life around with the help of his anarchic mum (Marion Bailey) but figures from his past and a bygone tragedy threaten to consume and derail him. The short film blends multiple genres including comedy, drama, and tragedy and it is Whishaw’s powerhouse performance that is propelling this little indie film that could into a race full of the big boys.
Indeed, Whishaw’s performance is the film’s Mvp.

The After
An exploration of grief in the aftermath of a tragic event, Misan Harriman’s Oscar-shortlisted short film The After centres on an intense close-up performance by David Oyelowo. It’s quite a departure for Misan, who made his name as a photographer, shooting the likes of Angeline Jolie and Meghan Markle, but he feels strongly that it’s a timely story about a subject which people need to talk about a lot more, and once he developed the idea, he told me, it was something he couldn’t let go of – despite the challenges of bringing it to the screen.
“It was a story that was in my head,” he says. “I'm very dyslexic – neurodiverse – and writing in a traditional form is a challenge for me. But I was very lucky to come across JJ Schwabach, a very young writer, who was able to really extract from my.

Not the only film about grief to feature in the 2024 Best Live Action Short Oscar shortlist, Misan Harriman’s contribution centres on a tightly wound performance by David Oyelowo. It’s a film focused on what happens when grief is kept inside, unprocessed – when trying too hard to continue with life in the way society at large expects pushes a man to breaking point.
We see only a little of the before, but the chemistry between the characters is sufficient to explain the weight of the protagonist’s loss. We also learn something about his life in that period, and the busy career which, we might reasonably surmise, meant he didn’t spend as much time with his loved ones as he would have liked to. Most of the film takes place once the damage has been done, and is focused on him alone, in close-up, reckoning with an anniversary and a birthday.

Meghan Markle quietly attended a private Netflix event near her and Prince Harry’s Montecito, California, home before Omid Scobie’s Endgame book hit shelves and drama ensued. Photos of the Duchess of Sussex have since appeared. Like Meghan’s recent stroll through Santa Barbara, the images have been dissected by a body language expert. Here’s their take on Meghan’s Netflix event appearance involving a tricky chair, a “low-key” outfit, and signs of “tension.”
Meghan led a conversation about Netflix’s ‘The After’ with Misan Harriman and David Oyelowo
Before the names of royals allegedly behind comments about Prince Archie’s skin color were revealed, and excerpts of Endgame were published, Meghan stepped out in Montecito.
In photos taken on Nov. 15, 2023, at a private residence in the seaside town where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex live, Meghan spoke with her friend, photographer Misan Harriman, and actor David Oyelowo.

None of our legendary interviewer pool were available and I’ve not done a junket in about 6 years but for some reason, I was really intrigued to take it on, and I’m so glad I did.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been able to escape the spotlight since leaving the royal family back in 2020. While they have made appearances more on their terms, they have still often found themselves in the headlines in relation to the royal family. Earlier this year, royal author Omid Scobie released Endgame, his book about the royals that had some major bombshell claims — including a Dutch copy accidentally revealing the names behind the royals who allegedly questioned Prince Archie’s skin color.
Now, one body language expert says the Duchess of Sussex appeared ‘tense’ at a solo event without Prince Harry just days before Scobie’s book was released.

In Netflix’s live-action short The After, a man named Dayo (David Oyelowo, who also serves as executive producer) loses his wife and child in a brutal public display of violence. Describing his film’s intense and shocking opening scene, director Misan Harriman compares it to “an act of God” — one born out of the “collective trauma of 2020.” What follows is Dayo’s recovery as he draws into himself, taking on a job as a rideshare driver to limit the intimacy of interactions with others — that is, until a family of three riders forces him to confront his long-simmering emotions.
Oyelowo says it was Harriman’s work as a photographer that inspired him to join the film, which Harriman co-wrote with John Julius Schwabach. “I had been paying attention to his photographs during the Black Lives Matter movement in that hellacious period of Covid,” says the actor. “Each of those...

With the shortlist voting period for the 2024 Oscars now open, Netflix has revealed a new video of Meghan Markle moderating a post-screening conversation with filmmaker Misan Harriman and star David Oyelowo for the live-action short film hopeful “The After.” An exclusive premiere of the 30-minute discussion can be found below.
“The After,” which is now streaming on Netflix, is about a London rideshare driver (Oyelowo) who “has to reconnect with himself and society after witnessing a devastating random attack in the capital.”
The short film is Harriman’s directorial debut, following years of success as a photographer, activist, and cultural commentator.
“When Covid hit, my second daughter was born just before lockdown started and the whole process, then George Floyd was killed. Short films — whether it be live-action, animated, or documentary — are becoming increasingly popular as more notable filmmakers begin to tell stories via this medium. Wes Anderson has four short films on Netflix, each adapted from a Roald Dahl book with “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the most popular of the bunch. Pedro Almodóvar made “Strange Way of Life” with Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. And Disney has the animated centenary celebration “Once Upon a Studio.”
These high-profile projects face fierce competition from some of the most up-and-coming filmmakers. Here are 10 other short films you should try and watch if you can. We think they’ll deservedly be serious Oscar contenders.

Save the Children's annual Winter Gala returned last week with guests spotted walking along the Yellow Brick Road into the Emerald City at London’s Guildhall for a Wonderful Wizard of Oz-themed night of festivities.
The gala was hosted by radio and TV presenter Lauren Laverne and attended by more than 270 guests including Save the Children supporters and ambassadors such as Poppy Delevingne, Dom Joly, Misan Harriman, Erin O’Connor, Ashley Jensen and DJ Cuppy. The night raised more than £700,000 for the charity through sponsorship, table sales, pledges, and the sale of some truly unique silent auction items, including a signed guitar from Ed Sheeran.
As attendees arrived, they walked through Dorothy’s upside-down house and into ‘Munchkinland’ in the crypts of the Guildhall for a drink’s reception, before following the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City of the Great Hall for the evening’s fundraising and entertainment.

HollyShorts and Goldfinch hosted several Oscar contenders in the short film categories witha special screening in London last week. Directors were on-hand to introduce their films and talk about their work. The night featured shorts from both blazing newcomers and Oscar-winning filmmakers flexing their muscles once more.
Beth Park‘s “Wild Animal” screened for the first time after only being completed the day before. The short depicted a woman suffering disorientation, paranoia, confusion, and loss of identity in this smart exploration of new motherhood. Park called the film “a journey of a lifetime” and said that the film would never have been made without the sense of team spirit found in her first short.
Misan Harriman‘s short film — Netflix’s “The After” — was up next. Harriman is best known for his work as a photographer and has photographed many high-profile celebrities including Steve McQueen and Liam Neeson. He turned...

In this intense short film, a grieving rideshare driver picks up a passenger who helps him confront the past.
The film is directed by Misan Harriman and, stars David Oyelowo, Jessica Plummer and Amelie Dokubo.
An interesting short that proves it does not require to be feature length to tell a full story. In its approximately 19 minutes running time, it manages to bring into the arena, besides the protagonist, the grieving Dayo, a number of characters who are presented to us as his passengers. Capturing short scenes of their rides in his car, and providing telling moments through their conversations, or their silences, this short is quite rich in characterizations, and offshoots for new stories to explore. All the while we follow Dayo’s journey where he deals with an excruciating suffering, grieving his deceased wife and child.

SAG-AFTRA may still be on strike, but studios are, nevertheless, pushing their Oscar contenders to garner the adequate (and allowed) attention they need to land nominations.
One of the main methods is getting industry voters out to screenings and making films available on the Academy Screening Room and BAFTA screening platforms. With the two significant organizations banning physical DVD screeners, voting members rely on the respective digital viewing portals to catch up on some of this year’s contenders vying for awards consideration.
Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.
The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration, with more films joining the fray over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision-makers of when a movie is placed in the Academy Screening Room for viewing.
