Plenty of war films made in the Hindi language always cater to the jingoistic narrative. Most of them would include a plot that involves sheer hatred for a certain neighboring nation. Though the enmity between the two nations was at its peak during all the major wars, the filmmakers approached this subject matter by emphasizing nationalistic tropes and refusing to dial down the noise. They also do not focus enough on screenplay, direction, or other technical aspects.
Raazi, Border, Shershaah, Lakshya, and Uri: The Surgical Strike are a handful of films that did justice to war drama as a genre. Pippa belongs to the same category as well. This period war drama directed by Raja Krishna Menon was released straight on Amazon Prime Video on November 10, 2023, and is based on the book The Burning Chaffees: A Soldier’s First-Hand Account of the 1971 War by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta.

Mrunal Thakur, who’s now rated as one of the most talented actresses in the country, has pened up on why the release of the 1971 War film ‘Pippa’ got delayed. Mrunal, who started her career in television but is now firmly a Bollywood star, said ‘Pippa’, which will premiere on Amazon Prime from November 10, “is like my baby and it takes nine months for the baby to come out”.
“There are a few films which don’t require so much attention because they are simple. In ‘Pippa’ there is a lot of work, VFX and the team shot at a number of locations. I was part of the first schedule but for the second and third schedule it was a very tough shoot,” she said.
She said this is the kind of journey that a film like ‘Pippa’ takes.

Had Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta not written his book, ‘The Burning Chaffees’, on the urging of his battalion mates, the Battle of Garibpur in the run-up to the 1971 India-Pakistan War, would have been forgotten forever.
But the book inspired Raja Krishna Menon, previously in the news for the Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Airlife’, to make the war film ‘Pippa’ with Ishaan ‘The Suitable Boy’ Khattar playing the war hero (and author of the book), then a 26-year-old who was made a Captain in the thick of the battle after his commanding officer died within three minutes of it.
The film is a compelling retelling of this tank battle, which was fought in present-day Bangladesh, against Pakistani fire power with Lt-General A.A.K. Niazi, who eventually signed the surrender documents for a defeated Pakistan.
