Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” based on the book by Georgia Hunter, tells the true story of the Kurcs, a Jewish family who lived in Poland at the onset of World War II. The series follows the Kurcs as the events of the war and the Holocaust separate parents and children, tearing families apart.
As casting director Fiona Weir read the script for the first episode, showrunner Erica Lipez stressed that despite the grim setting, it ultimately was a celebratory story — and it was important she get the family dynamics right.
Speaking with Variety, Weir says Hunter, who based the book on her family experiences, turned out to be her most valuable source. “These were real people that she either knew or discovered, so there was lots to talk about in who these people were. And then, we had to create a group that organically felt like a family,...

We Were the Lucky Ones — “Siberia” – Episode 103 — Genek and Herta are sent on a grueling train ride. Addy escapes Europe by sea. Halina starts a new job in Soviet-Occupied Lvov. Halina (Joey King), shown. (Photo by: Vlad Cioplea/Hulu) Antisemitism is a disturbing reality, a persistent echo of some of history’s darkest moments. Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones brings the weight of the Holocaust to the screen, focusing on a fictional Jewish family. Their story, though imagined, draws power from the all-too-real experiences of those who survived. For star Joey King, the series has profound meaning. She believes it’s vital for her generation to connect with the past, to understand the suffering it holds – a path towards building a more empathetic world in the face of today’s hatred. As of Episode 4, “We Were the Lucky Ones” is still in the midst of the Nazi domination of Europe. But the Hulu limited series has already displayed a preference for swerving away from the expected tropes of the period. It’s telling a World War II saga that features no battlefields and a chronicle of Jewish resistance that is more about forging and smuggling than about killing Nazis.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” is all the better for showing the audience new kinds of hardships and new avenues for survival, too. It shines when dramatic moments feel specific to the Kurcs, the Polish Jewish family the show follows as the war scatters them across Europe and even further afield, as opposed to the kinds of war imagery that, given the number of WWII dramas each year, can appear standard issue.

Growing up in Israel meant that “We Were the Lucky Ones” actor Amit Rahav was taught about the Holocaust at any early age. His childhood in Tel Aviv included a school trip to concentration camps in Poland. “It’s mandatory in the curriculum,” Rahav tells Variety.
Then there were the stories at home.
“My grandma, who is the greatest and I love her so much, she is a Holocaust survivor,” says Rahav, best known for his breakout performance as Yanky Shapiro in Netflix’s 2021 series “Unorthodox.” “So the topic of the Holocaust was surrounding me and my family since I can remember.”
Based on Georgia Hunter’s bestselling book about her own family’s experience, “We Were the Lucky Ones” tells the story of her grandfather Addy (Logan Lerman) and his siblings’ fight to survive the Holocaust and reunite. Rahav plays her grandfather’s lawyer-turned-photographer brother, Jakob. Joey King stars as their sister Halina.

Director Thomas Kail says that if you were to boil the arc of “We Were the Lucky Ones” down to its essence, then the Hulu limited series is about a large family who has dinner together and then tries to make sure they have dinner together again. Which is no mean feat for any family of 12; it’s an even more impossible ask when it’s a family of Polish Jews during World War II trying to stay one step ahead of the Germans and/or hiding their Jewishness from anti-semites on all sides.
Kail, showrunner Erica Lipez, and the rest of the “We Were the Lucky Ones’” creative team had a number of choices for how to handle the Kurc family story. It could’ve easily followed just Halina (Joey King), the youngest daughter who finds herself drawn into the resistance, or Addy (Logan Lerman), who can only worry...

Logan Lerman and Joey King star in the Hulu series, We Were The Lucky Ones, based on the book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. The series and book explore the dramatized version of how siblings Addy and Halina, the former of whom is Hunter’s grandfather, survived the Holocaust. While promoting the series on the red carpet of its premiere at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, Lerman shared that the story drew him because it was a ‘real’ Holocaust story.

Lerman also shared that he felt other fictional movies on the subject were exploitative and wrong. However, Lerman starred in the Prime Video series, Hunters, a conspiracy drama that tells the fictional story of a group of real Nazi hunters.

“We Were the Lucky Ones” author Georgia Hunter had two goals while writing her bestselling novel, based on true events that her ancestors endured and now adapted for the small screen in the form of a Hulu limited series starring Logan Lerman and Joey King.
At the heart of the story lies the Kurc family, Hunter’s first-generation relatives who experienced the Holocaust during World War II. The Hulu adaptation — like Hunter’s book — unfolds from the different perspectives of her grandfather Addy (portrayed by Lerman) and his four siblings Genek (Henry Lloyd Hughes), Jakob (Amit Rahav), Mila (Hadas Yeron) and Halina (King). The historical drama series features a cast of all-Jewish actors.
“One [was] to honor the family story,” Hunter told TheWrap in February during the Television Critics Association press tour. “I put on the family historian hat and I just said, ‘I want to get this down to capture...

Georgia Hunter is still in disbelief that her family’s story of surviving the Holocaust has been adapted into the Hulu limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” headlined by Logan Lerman and Joey King. Based on Hunter’s novel of the same name, the show stars Lerman as her grandfather, Addy, and King as his little sister Halina, two of five Polish siblings trying to stay alive and bring their family back together during World War II.
“It’s surreal,” Hunter said at the March 21 premiere of the show, held at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. “It’s really wonderful. We’ve been editing and watching it on small screens, so to see it up here with this incredible group of people, with all of you, I feel pretty good.”
On the red carpet, Lerman spoke to Variety about the significance of sharing “We Were the Lucky Ones” with the world.

The Hulu series We Were the Lucky Ones takes place during one of the most harrowing periods of the world, the war that plunged the world into chaos and death. With the Holocaust of the Jews, there was certainly no denying that the Nazis had lost their humanity. Perhaps V from V for Vendetta was indeed right when he called ideas bulletproof. It was certainly an idea that indoctrinated an entire generation of youth to commit atrocities, and a similar idea continues to propagate hatred throughout the world as we know it.
This period drama about the bitter ordeals that a Jewish family goes through is heartbreaking; however, considering the recent political climate around the world, it feels very much like a premonition of the future. Perhaps history indeed repeats itself and the human race is stuck in this loop of violence, a never-ending cycle of hatred that further aggravates...

Co-composers Rachel Portman and Jon Ehrlich have only met in person once, and collaborated across the globe while scoring Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones.”
Despite this, both Portman and Ehrlich said that working across continents was one of the best parts of the process. “We Were the Lucky Ones” has its warning built into the title. The Hulu series based on the book by Georgia Hunter and adapted by Erica Lipez is about how one family survived and separated during the Holocaust, all of it underscored by that title — this is what they went through, the horror they witnessed and endured, the sadness that befell them, and they were lucky.
The series kicks off in Radom, Poland before the War, with the Kurc family: Siblings Halina (Joey King), Addy (Logan Lerman), Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), Jakob (Amit Rahav), and Mila (Hadas Yaron) — and their parents, Sol (Lior Ashkenazi) and Nechuma (Robin Weigert). The Kurcs are close-knit, their home echoing with overlapping voices and laughter at the holidays, and they already feel the pangs of missing Addy, who lives in Paris.

Joey King has nothing against method acting – it’s just not for her.
Especially for projects like her latest, the Holocaust series “We Were the Lucky Ones.”

“I think anyone who is a method actor is truly so brave and amazing, but I’m personally not a method actor,” King tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “And when shooting a show like this, I just don’t know how I could be because having those moments of release in between setups and in between takes with your friends [is needed].”

There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred. Devastating, and profoundly moving, “We Were the Lucky Ones” illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.

When Joey King was approached by director Thomas Kail to star as Halina Kurc in “We Were the Lucky Ones,” “It was just kind of an immediate yes,” King said to IndieWire. “No thoughts, just yes.”

Depending on the moment, the title of Hulu’s We Were the Lucky Ones might sound like a bitter lament or a prayer of thanks, a sigh of relief or an expression of anguish. In the end, it also simply sounds true. Based on the novel by Georgia Hunter — which in turn was inspired by the actual history of her ancestors — the miniseries traces the far-flung journeys of the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family, throughout World War II. That their paths will be harrowing is not in doubt; a sobering opening caption reminds us that “By the end of the Holocaust, 90% of Poland’s three million Jews were annihilated.”
Yet an exercise in misery this isn’t. No matter how devastating these stories get, what binds all of them together is a sense of hope — stubborn, hard-won, fainter at certain times than others but always undeniably there. So overwhelming is...

Based on Remigiusz Mróz’s novel series of the same name, the Netflix thriller Detective Forst centers around a murder investigator, Wiktor Forst, who sets out on his journey to unravel the mystery surrounding the interconnected murders taking place in the Tatra Mountain region of Poland. Previously, Forst used to work in a different location, but following an incident, he was suspended from his previous precinct and was transferred to Zakopane. Not only that, but the man had to serve his six-month prison sentence due to the offense, which was never explicitly mentioned in the series. Perhaps Forst had acted violently while interrogating a minor, which was the reason he was charged with criminal offenses. However, at Zakopane, upon his arrival, he had to look into a string of perplexing murders, which also reminded him of his most troubled childhood memories. Let’s discuss Wiktor Forst’s character journey and...

The most precious period of our lives is those good old days of childhood, the memories of which we cling to for the rest of our lives. Being able to tell the stories of sweet childhood memories is an incredible feeling that maybe not all people have the privilege of. Some are so terribly traumatized in their childhood that they have no room for positive feelings other than hatred in their hearts. Coming face to face with the fact that one’s birth is the result of painful torture rather than love can destroy one’s emotional stability. Just like it did with Halina Krol’s psyche in the Netflix Polish thriller Detective Forst. This six-part Netflix series revolves around a series of gruesome murders taking place in the Tatra Mountains of Poland. All of these murders had a deep connection with the protagonist of the story, Wiktor Forst, who...

Detective Forst, a Netflix original Polish mystery thriller, offers a gripping narrative with a set of interesting characters. The titular character, Detective Wiktor Forst’s journey in the series began with a series of murders taking place in the town of Giewont, where he had been working for the Zakopane police. The day the first murder victim was found hanging from a tower, Forst came across another significant character in the story, Olga Szrebska, a journalist who arrived alone at the crime scene to take a look at the murders. Due to her wandering around the crime scene alone, the police didn’t believe that she was a journalist and thought she might be someone who could tamper with the crime scene. However, our lover boy protagonist Forst instantly believes Olga and includes her in his investigation.

In "Bodies Bodies Bodies," Rachel Sennott plays Alice, who just wants to have a good time with Greg (Lee Pace). She does not get her wish in Halina Reijn's A24 horror-comedy, in which no one is safe. Characters drink, ingest drugs, and all their inner fears begin to tear everyone to pieces. Even before bodies start dropping, anxiety runs high in the film.
One of the drunkest characters, as Rachel Sennott confirmed to us in an interview, is Alice. The movie walks right up to the line of poking fun at its intoxicated characters, but every once in a while, there's a moment where Reijn reminds audiences, "Hey, these are people, too." Those moments often result in laughter, and recently, the star of the great "Shiva Baby" spoke to us about bringing her character to life with authenticity and humor.

Maria Bakalova is the audience's eyes and ears into the claustrophobic world of "Bodies Bodies Bodies." Bee (Bakalova) is one of the two outsiders among a group of friends throwing a hurricane party in a mansion. She's a mystery to this otherwise tight-knit group, so when someone dies, people look in Bee's direction. That's about as much as should be said about Halina Reijn's horror-comedy, which takes pleasure in toying with audience's expectations.
Bakalova, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm," pulls off a tricky performance in "Bodies Bodies Bodies." One, she plays the only reserved character in a house full of big personalities. Two, Bakalova needs to walk a fine line between revealing too much or too little about her character. She is in a murder mystery, after all. It's a fun role for the actress, who told us about her...

Lee Pace makes the best decision in "Bodies Bodies Bodies." If you've seen the film, you already know that says a lot. Pace plays Greg, a guy who simply wants to party with the friends of the younger woman (played by Rachel Sennott) he's seeing. But when their hurricane party starts to take a turn for the worse, he's wise enough to leave the party early and catch some shut-eye.
That's about as much as we can say about Pace's role in the film without spoiling some of the fun the actor has in the film. During a very brief interview, the actor summed up "Bodies Bodies Bodies" best as "a movie about inner demons." With just enough booze and drugs, insecurities and secrets come roaring out to wreak havoc in Halina Reijn's horror-comedy. Recently, Pace told us about his interpretation of the film and one of the smartest...
