“Strays,” the canine comedy featuring the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx and a slew of other stars, only has a handful of “human” roles.
There’s Will Forte as Doug, a pothead who abandons his poor dog Reggie (Ferrell) in the middle of the big city in an attempt to get rid of him.
Reggie befriends a street smart stray named Bug (Foxx) and they’re eventually joined by Hunter (Randall Park) and Maggie (Isla Fisher). As the group tries to retrace Reggie’s journey back to Doug’s house, they come across some outrageous characters, including one A-list actor.
Spoiler alert: Read on if you want to find out who the celebrity cameo in “Strays” is.
As the strays make their way across an open field, a eagle swoops in and flies away with Bug. Reggie tries to rescue his friend by clamping on Bug’s leg...

From the minute you saw "From the studio that brought you Marley & Me" in the trailer for The Art of Racing in the Rain, you probably knew you were in trouble. Honestly, has there ever been a movie about a dog that wasn't a tearjerker? The flick - which stars Milo Ventimiglia, Amanda Seyfried, and a very cute Golden Retriever voiced by Kevin Costner - looks like a total sob fest, and the This Is Us star basically already confirmed as much. "It's a really, really beautiful film," Ventimiglia said during his interview at at Popsugar Play/Ground. "I'm in the business of tears because of my role on This Is Us. Even I cried a little bit." Oh, jeez. We're toast.

Gail Mancuso always thought her feature-film directorial debut would be a comedy, given her background of having directed some of the biggest sitcoms in the history of TV. Instead, she found herself drawn to “A Dog’s Journey” due to the emotional connection she has to animals as well as the messages the film sends to viewers.
“Everything was leaning towards the comedy genre,” Mancuso told TheWrap. “I thought naturally I would do a comedy and I was working on one with Amblin, but then all of a sudden Amblin told me, ‘We have this other one that’s ready to go.’ [‘A Dog’s Purpose’ and ‘A Dog’s Journey’ producer] Gavin Polone knew me from ‘Gilmore Girls’ and we powwowed, and he knew I was an animal lover and had all these dogs, so I read it and, being a woman and loving the Cj story, I knew we could make it into something very special. Actor Dennis Quaid believes pets teach people a lot about life. He was happy to open up on this facet through his film "A Dog's Journey".
A sequel to the heartwarming "The Dog's Purpose", the film is directed by Gail Mancuso. Based on a novel by W. Bruce Cameron with the same name, "A Dog's Journey" is about the adventures of Bailey (dog) through multiple lives.
"I've always been a dog person and each one I have had has meant a lot to me. They're a member of the family, as well as a sponge that can take on your personality," Quaid said in a statement.
"When they go, it's usually the first time that children learn about death in their life. That's what's so beautiful about these movies, with Bailey's reincarnation and coming back as this same spirit," he added.
Quaid will be seen as Bailey's best friend Ethan.

Cat people can still find something to love in “A Dog’s Journey.”
“If you’ve ever loved an animal, there’s something in this movie for you. At the end of the day, it’s really about that thought that your animals are always with you and that some part of them is continuing on, and I think that’s a lovely thought for everyone,” producer Naia Cucukov told Variety at the movie’s premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood on Thursday night.
The film continues the story from 2017’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” in which Bailey, a golden retriever voiced by Josh Gad, becomes reincarnated into different dogs throughout time before finally reuniting with his owner Ethan (Dennis Quaid). “A Dog’s Journey” sees Bailey embody more dogs to help Ethan’s granddaughter Cj (Kathryn Prescott) with her own struggles as she grows up.
“It pulls the heartstrings in the right way.

You know things are bad for women in Hollywood when there’s one female dog featured in canine cutefest “A Dog’s Journey,” and it still gets to be voiced by Josh Gad. That is, admittedly, an unavoidable consequence of this family franchise’s curious Buddhism-for-beginners premise: the idea that one mind and soul can be carried through the bodies of multiple mutts over the course of eternity, with Gad as our perky spiritual ferry through repeated rounds of Rover reincarnation. As if to compensate, Gail Mancuso’s blandly agreeable sequel to the boy-focused 2017 hit “A Dog’s Purpose” reorients its human narrative around a young woman’s troubled road to love and self-fulfilment — via the trusty companionship of various devoted pups.
That aside, fans of the first film will be delighted to find the formula pretty much untweaked, with a steady stream of corn-syrup sentiment binding what would otherwise...

There is apparently a sizable overlap between people who like films in which cute dogs scamper around happily, and people who like films in which cute dogs drop dead every half an hour. In 2017, “A Dog’s Purpose” catered to both groups by telling the tale of Bailey, whose soul transmigrates into the body of a newborn pup whenever he dies. He is granted a different name, breed, and (sometimes) gender with each metempsychosis, but his enthusiastic thoughts are always voiced by Josh Gad, and he retains his loyalty to his favorite master, Ethan, played in the film’s later scenes by Dennis Quaid.
Critics agreed that “A Dog’s Purpose” was, well, a dog, but Bailey, who can recall his past lives, is back in the sequel, “A Dog’s Journey”.
Again, it is a glossily nostalgic and moralistic Nicholas Sparks-style melodrama co-written by W. Bruce Cameron, and adapted from his novel.

‘Green Book.’
Three Academy Awards including best film and for supporting actor Mahershala Ali gave Green Book a sizable bounce in Australian cinemas last weekend while the best actor Oscar for Rami Malek has helped prolong Bohemian Rhapsody’s marathon run.
In other respects it was another bleak trading session as family adventure A Dog’s Way Home had a mediocre opening, well ahead of the other wide new releases, English heist caper King of Thieves and gory thriller Greta.
Flying the Nest, an animated family film which follows a young bird who sets off on a journey through a harsh and unrelenting winter in order to reunite with his true love, had minimal impact as an alternate content release.
Cinemas are marking time until the arrival this Thursday of Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel. The top 20 titles collectively generated $9.7 million, 6 per cent down on the previous weekend according to Numero.

"I wanted to chase the car, but I just didn't have the energy..." He's back!! Universal Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for the next doggie movie coming up this year titled A Dog's Journey, officially the sequel to A Dog's Purpose. Both of these films are based on the books written by W. Bruce Cameron, and are about a dog's soul as it travels between various dogs and families and owners over the years. We've already had one other dog movie this year - A Dog's Way Home - and the title of this one is a bit too similar, even though it's from the "original" dog love book series. A Dog's Journey once again features the voice of Josh Gad as the dog Bailey, and a human cast including Dennis Quaid, Marg Helgenberger, Kathryn Prescott, Betty Gilpin, Peggy Lipton, Luke Kirby, Gabrielle Rose, and Britt Robertson. Stx and Warner Bros. came out as the big box office winners this weekend. Stx saw its first No. 1 opening with “The Upside,” which beat tracker expectations with an estimated $19.5 million opening from 3,080 screen. It was expected to open to $10-12 million.
WB, meanwhile, won’t take their fourth straight No. 1 weekend, but “Aquaman” will still become the studio’s first $1 billion hit since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012 and the fifth in studio history. The superhero film added $17 million this weekend to push its domestic total to $287 million.
“The Upside” was originally supposed to be an R-Rated film released last year by The Weinstein Company. But after Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct and TWC declared bankruptcy, Stx reached a distribution deal last August with Lantern Entertainment, the label created out of TWC’s bankruptcy sale to Lantern Capital. Outperforming expectations, STXFilms's The Upside debuted atop the weekend box office, upsetting Aquaman's bid for a fourth straight weekend at #1. That said, Aquaman isn't exactly focused on its runner-up position domestically as the film is now the first in the DC Extended Universe to top $1 billion at the global box office. As for the rest of the week's new wide releases, Sony's A Dog's Way Home delivered on studio expectations while Entertainment Studios's sci-fi thriller Replicas failed to place within the weekend top ten. With an estimated $19.59 million, STXFilms's The Upside topped the weekend box office, dramatically outperforming expectations heading into the weekend. The remake of the popular French film The Intouchables, The Upside stars Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, and while the reviews were mixed heading into the weekend, opening day audiences seemed to enjoy themselves, giving the film an "A" CinemaScore, which bodes well for the film's future.

There seems to be no downside to Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart’s comedy-drama “The Upside.”
The Stx Films pic is on its way to becoming the entertainment company’s first No. 1 debut with an estimated $19.5 million from 3,080 North American sites, knocking Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman” into the second place slot. Stx Films’ previous biggest debut was 2016’s “Bad Moms,” which landed $23.8 million for the No. 3 spot.
“The Upside” took in $6.95 million on Friday and is looking at a weekend estimate nearly double what the film had initially projected, which may be due to the film’s recutting in order to land a PG-13 rating as opposed to its original R. Stx Films reached a distribution deal with Lantern Entertainment, which formed out of the Weinstein Company’s remaining assets, to handle the pic. It was originally intended to be released last year, but was postponed after the Weinstein scandal.

Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston’s “The Upside” is showing surprising strength in its opening weekend by narrowly topping “Aquaman” for the No. 1 spot at the North American box office, early estimates showed Friday.
Stx’s “The Upside” is launching with as much $7 million on Friday, including $1.1 million from previews, and could wind up the weekend with as much as $20 million, according to revised forecasts. If those projections hold, “The Upside” would dethrone “Aquaman,” which was pegged Friday to finish the weekend in the $15 million to $18 million range.
Family adventure “A Dog’s Way Home” is performing in line with expectations and heading for $10 million to $11 million for Sony. Entertainment Studios’ Keanu Reeves sci-fier “Replicas” isn’t showing much traction with a $3 million weekend projected amid dismal reviews.
Warner Bros.’ tentpole “Aquaman” had been expected to win its fourth consecutive weekend easily, given that “The Upside” was pegged to finish in the $10 million range.

With the new year underway, this weekend sees three new releases vying for a spot in the top ten, though once again not one of them is likely to dethrone Aquaman from the weekend's top spot, which is where WB's latest entry into the DC Extended Universe looks to remain for the fourth straight weekend in a row. As for the week's new releases, Stx will debut The Upside, a remake of 2012's global hit The Intouchables, into over 3,000 theaters; Sony will give family's a new option with A Dog's Way Home; and Entertainment Studios debuts the Keanu Reeves thriller Replicas. At the same time Focus will go nationwide with the release of On the Basis of Sex after two weeks in limited release and Annapurna will do the same with If Beale Street Could Talk. After holding on even better than expected last weekend, look for WB's Aquaman...

Those predisposed to emotional manipulation by dogs at play and in peril will be easily swayed by director Charles Martin Smith’s “A Dog’s Way Home.” Based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, this story about a lost dog attempting a 400-mile journey home takes us on an emotional roller coaster, most of it with a lump in our throats. However, for every shameless trick the filmmakers employ to pluck our heartstrings, resonant chords are struck elsewhere, teaching audiences about family, the power of unconditional love, and the ripple effects of compassion. In the pantheon of puppy pictures, this doesn’t rank as top dog, but it’s certainly not the runt of the litter either.

Right off the bat, it’s important to know for this review that I’m a dog owner. In fact, as I wrote this, my six year old mutt is sleeping mere feet from me. I tell you that to let you know that the manipulation found within A Dog’s Way Home worked on me, almost without fail. The movie is a family friendly animal adventure, but one that made me cry on about a half dozen separate occasions. There are happy tears to be found, sad tears, you name it. By the time the flick had come to an end, I was a total mess. The film is an adventure suitable for the whole family, whether they have two legs or four. We follow a puppy (internal monologue provided by Bryce Dallas Howard) as she goes from a young stray to a beloved family pet. Found with a...

Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston have a Herculean task this weekend: Taking on “Aquaman.”
Hart and Cranston co-star in Stx Films and Lantern Entertainment’s “The Upside,” one of the three movies opening nationwide on Friday that will have to compete with reigning box office champ, “Aquaman.” And unless a new title (the other two releases being Sony’s “A Dog’s Way Home” and Entertainment Studios’ “Replica”) pulls off a surprise, it looks like the King of the Seven Seas will rule yet again.
Warner Bros.’ comic-book tentpole “Aquaman” — starring Jason Momoa and directed by James Wan — has generated over $943 million worldwide and is well on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark. If the aquatic blockbuster sees a similar decline to last weekend, it could add another $15 million to $18 million domestically in its fourth week of release. “Aquaman” has earned a solid $259 million in the States, but overseas...

Bryce Dallas Howard will steal your heart in her upcoming film A Dog’s Way Home.
In a People exclusive trailer, the 37-year-old actress voices Bella, a dog determined to find her way back home after she gets lost from her owner.
Howard, who took care of a goat barn while raised by her director father Ron and mother Cheryl, tells People she was inspired to take part in the film after A Dog’s Purpose helped her children grieve through the loss of their cat. [While A Dog’s Way Home isn’t a sequel to the 2017 film, they’re both based on books written by W. Bruce Cameron.]

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners has begun principal photography on the sequel “A Dog’s Journey.” Tailored for the Chinese market, the film sees Henry Lau, Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, and Kathryn Prescott join Dennis Quaid in the cast.
“A Dog’s Journey” is the follow-up to 2017’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” which portrayed a single dog’s spirit incarnated through the lives of four separate canines. Both films are based on the inspirational novels by W. Bruce Cameron. The film is co-financed and co-produced by Walden Media and Alibaba Pictures with Quaid reprising his role as the owner of the dog Bailey, voiced again by Josh Gad.
“A Dog’s Purpose” was a surprise hit in China, where Alibaba was a marketing and distribution partner. China delivered $88 million of the film’s $196 million global cumulative, compared with $65 million from North America.
Gail Mancuso is directing from a screenplay by the writing teams of W.

Sony would like you to know it’s committed to originality. That was the message reiterated by its executives at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation Monday night — and no one was more passionate than chairman Tom Rothman, who spoke of the studio’s “increasing dedication” and “commitment” to the concept.
However, Rothman presided over a show-and-tell that included Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly doing their “Step Brothers” schtick in “Holmes and Watson” as Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Watson (tagline: “The World’s Greatest Dicks”); “Hotel Transylvania 3,” Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween,” “Equalizer 2,” “Sicario 2,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Marvel’s “Venom,” remakes of “Superfly” and “Miss Bala,” “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” and teasing mentions of 2019 titles “Men in Black 3,” the still-untitled “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel, and “Jumanji 2.”
