This live-action adaptation of a venerable Spanish comic strip offers plenty of summer school shenanigans and bright, brisk fun – but nothing for the grownups
Zip and Zap, or Zipi y Zape, are two cheeky mop-topped Spanish comic-strip characters brought to life here in a live-action feature film. It sees the pair sent away to a summer boarding school run by the dictatorial, eye-patch-wearing Falconetti, who believes that children should be seen and not heard and that fun is an impediment to personal growth. Zip and Zap baulk at such thinking and soon they and their marble gang are causing all manner of mischief, while trying to uncover the deeper secrets of this educational establishment.
Beyond speculating about whether Falconetti’s authoritarianism might be a sly reference to Franco-era Spain (the strip’s creator, José Escobar Saliente, was imprisoned after the civil war for union activity), adults are unlikely to find...

Zip (Raúl Rivas) and Zap (Daniel Cerezo) aren’t exactly delighted to be spending their summer vacation at Hope Re-Education Centre, a remote correctional facility in the Spanish countryside; even less so once they’ve met their new director, Falconetti (Javier Gutiérrez), a strict and severe man who has declared war on all things frivolous and fun. In response to school’s the oppressive rules and restrictions, which regularly see Zap relegated to solitary confinement for wanton acts of insubordination, the brothers form the Marble Gang, recruiting fellow students Filo (Fran García) and Micro (Marcos Ruiz) to their underground resistance. Together with Falconetti’s own niece, Matilda (Claudia Vega), the group cause mayhem around the school, inadvertently unearthing a treasure map hidden by the centre’s founder.

While plenty of audiences in the United States are obsessed with comic book adaptations like Iron Man, Thor and The Avengers from the Marvel universe (with DC Comics playing catch-up, beginning with Man of Steel), the people of Spain have another big comic book adaptation with adventure and excitement. Based on the beloved comic book characters Zip and Zap, the 2014 Sundance Film Festival will feature Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang, an adventure that has brought comparisons to The Goonies. The film follows a group of kids who uncover a mystery at the strict Hope Re-education Centre, and we have the first trailer! Here's the first trailer for Oskar Santos's Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang from YouTube: Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang is directed by Oskar Santos and written by Jorge Lara and Francisco Roncal, based on Spain's iconic comic book series. After being caught stealing final exams,...

The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.
The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

Diego is a doctor so used to dealing with extreme situations that he has become immune to the pain of others. When one of his patients, Sara, tries to kill herself, her partner points an accusing finger at Diego, holding him directly responsible for what has happened. During a tense confrontation between the two, a gun is held at Diego. Hours later, he only remembers the sound of something being fired, and the strange sensation of having been on the receiving end of more than a gunshot.

Variety reports that Spanish genre veteran Alejandro Amenábar (pictured) is one of the producers on El Mal Ajeno (The Evil Of Others), a new psychological thriller with fantasy overtones. Amenábar’s Himenoptero company is teaming with Mod Producciones and Telecinco Cinema on the project.
To be directed by Oskar Santos Gómez from a script by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, El Mal Ajeno focuses on a doctor who is accused of driving one of his patients to suicide, and becomes a victim of a shooting himself. The leads are Eduardo Noriega, who starred in the Amenábar-directed Open Your Eyes and Thesis as well as The Devil’S Backbone and Nadie Conoce A Nadie, and The Orphanage’s Belén Rueda. We’ll bring you more details as we find ’em out.
