We're back in class with another fun episode of Abbott Elementary!
This was probably the best episode of the season, and for that reason, we're giving it five stars.
When you have an ensemble cast like this one, it can be hard to make sure everyone's story gets told. But the writers of this show know what they're doing, and it never feels like anyone is left behind.
The big news from Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 10 was Janine's big career decision. We definitely saw it coming, as she's been dropping hints about how much she misses being in the classroom all season.
The district fellowship was a nice storyline for her because it gave her opportunities for growth and helped her understand where she really wanted to be.
Plus, it gave us Manny, who will be missed as the show pulls away from the district. Maybe they'll find a way to keep him involved,...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The strike may have delayed and abbreviated the third season of Abbott Elementary but Quinta Brunson went into it feeling pretty confident that her comedy wasn’t going anywhere: she was told that ABC had picked up the series for a fourth season.
While appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV on Sunday, Brunson — who was joined on stage by Tyler James Williams (Gregory), Chris Perfetti (Jacob) and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) — recalled how incredible it felt to know that “ABC trusted us” before they even began production on season 3.
The news of the pickup was made public in February at the Television Critics Associaton press tour.
The comedy just wrapped production last week on the third season. Brunson, who plays Janine in the comedy that she created for ABC, said she still marvels at how far her Emmy-winning comedy has come.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Abbott Elementary isn’t going anywhere.
The comedy series has been renewed for Season 4 at ABC, as announced by Willard R. Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) during Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour.
The renewal comes on the heels of the much-anticipated Season 3 premiere, which was delayed due to last year’s strikes. The episode not only gave a fitting explanation for why the camera crews had missed the first half of the school year but also had some supersized guest stars.
Season 2 of Abbott Elementary was quite the hit for ABC, averaging a 3.56 rating among adults 18-49 in the 35-day viewing window. That marked the strongest season average for an ABC comedy since the 2019-2020 season.
Recently, creator and star Quinta Brunson also took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Season 2. In addition to Brunson, the series...

“Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-award-winning sitcom created by Quinta Brunson, has returned for its third season, and the series remains just as witty and fun as it’s always been. However, the mega-sized opener titled “Career Day Part 1 & 2” suggests the comedy is ready to tackle one of the most significant issues facing the public education system in America – teacher burnout.
In previous seasons, audiences have witnessed the Abbott teachers bend and twist themselves in knots to get adequate resources while dealing with a self-centered and inept (though hilarious) principal, Ava Coleman (Janelle James). Veteran educators Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), now decades in to the profession, have mastered the art of delivering with less. Meanwhile, Janine Teagues (Brunson) and Jacob Hill’s (Chris Perfetti) naïveté and love of educating have enabled them to imagine a future for Abbott students that likely won’t come to fruition.

Principal Ava Coleman is ringing in the school year with some strict new changes and this time, she means business! (Yes, you read that right.)
In the Season 3 trailer for Abbott Elementary (which premieres with a one-hour block Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 9/8c on ABC), Ava reveals that she went to Harvard over the summer where she “truly learned what it takes to do the job as a principal.” The lack of her usual off-color jokes and the addition of cameras she placed “all over this joint” understandably have the Abbott teachers feeling quite unsettled. Plus, Janine tests out some off-brand curse words!

“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.

On day one, we all felt it. We all felt something really special here,” says Abbott Elementary executive producer and director Randall Einhorn of the ABC sitcom. In its first year, the freshman series won two Emmys for creator-showrunner Quinta Brunson and supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (respectively, they were the second Black women to win in their categories: best writing for a comedy and best supporting actress in a comedy). The second season has earned the show five more Emmy noms, for best comedy series, actress (Brunson), supporting actress (Janelle James and Ralph) and guest actress (Taraji P. Henson).

In the comedy Emmys race, voters have to choose. Yes, on a literal level, they’ll have to choose between Abbott Elementary and The Bear and Barry and Ted Lasso as well as others. But there’s also a more existential choice on the table: a choice between optimism and cynicism.
On one hand, shows like Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and ABC’s Abbott Elementary are about the essential goodness of people. In the former, nearly all the stuffy Brits have come around to the inspirational messaging of the coach from Kansas; in the latter, Philadelphia teachers are caring for kids and one another while trying to fend off an encroaching charter school that would make public education less equitable.
But then, on the other hand, you have HBO/Max’s Barry, which proved in its final season to be more convinced than ever that humans are rotten to the core.

This story about Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams and “Abbott Elementary” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Quinta Brunson is the heart of “Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-winning ABC comedy she exec-produces, writes and stars in, the show’s supporting cast is its soul. Set in a struggling Philadelphia public school, the series has been praised for its realistic depiction of America’s education system, while also finding humor and hope hiding in plain sight.
The show’s first two seasons worked hard to elucidate the plight of the American schoolteacher, but that’s far from the only lesson that “Abbott Elementary” has been serving up to viewers. Forget about English, say “see you later” to math, because according to its cast, the series is all about chemistry.

Janelle James has received awards and fan adoration for her breakout role as the stylish and self-centered Principal Ava Coleman on "Abbott Elementary." But just five years ago, she was living in the back of a bike shop in New York. "There was an air mattress and a rat," James said in Variety's April/May cover story. The shop belonged to a friend who let her sleep there four nights a week between comedy gigs around the city. "I would wake up and get out before the store opened. I'd just walk around all day with my stuff until I did shows and then I'd go back to sleep."
James's origins as a struggling actor may be surprising to those who've seen her work. As Ava, she's a natural on screen, delivering punchy one-liners that have quickly gained her a cult following. Seeing her success as an award-winning actor, it's...

Janelle James would prefer people not compare her to her Abbott Elementary character.
James stars as the selfishly incompetent principal Ava Coleman on ABC’s Emmy-winning mockumentary.
While the breakout role has won her swathes of new fans, the actor said she would rather “people see me outside of the character of Ava”.
“I am not Ava; I am acting,” James told Variety in a new cover interview. “I’m not ashamed to be Ava, but when people say, ‘You’re just like your character,’ that’s an insult.
“I’m doing a lot of work to bring this b**** to life.”
Abbott Elementary is the series teachers have deserved for so long, and has been a hit with viewers and critics since its January 2022 debut.
“People have taken to Abbott Elementary because it’s a true workplace comedy,” the show’s star and creator Quinta Bruson said in a previous interview with The Independent.

If you Google Janelle James, the first thing that comes up is that she got her big break from Chris Rock. Wrong!
Rock did hire her as a comedian on his 2017 “Total Blackout Tour,” but James says that’s as far as it goes. “He’s done a lot,” she says, carefully choosing words to describe someone who is credited too frequently for her rise. “He’s done enough for me. He didn’t make my career or anything.” She adds, “I was never close with Chris Rock. We went on tour together, and then I didn’t speak to him after that.”
And of course, she followed what happened to him at the Oscars, but hasn’t watched his Netflix special. She doesn’t want to be cornered into talking about him or the slap in interviews like this one. “I want to truthfully be like, ‘I ain’t seen it.

Since its debut, Abbott Elementary, which follows the lives of a group of teachers at an underfunded school in Philadelphia, has shone a light on the struggles of teachers across America who aren’t receiving the support they need to help students thrive.
It’s an impact that isn’t lost on creator Quinta Brunson, but it wasn’t necessarily her intention when she began crafting the series.
“I didn’t have it in mind as people think I did. I know that sounds bad, but a lot of people are like, ‘Wow, you did this thing to show how under appreciated teachers are, to change the world.’ Not really. I just wanted to make a comedy,” she said during Deadline’s Contenders TV panel on Sunday. “I really just wanted to make a good workplace comedy, and I think the best workplace comedies exist out of places where people are doing their best.
