Essence’s 17th annual Black Women in Hollywood awards will salute Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Starz’s Kathryn Busby.
The star-studded annual event celebrating Black women for their contributions to the film and TV business will take place on Thursday, March 7, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, hosted by actor, Grammy-winning rapper and entrepreneur Cliff “Method Man” Smith.
News of the special commendation comes amid a groundswell of acclaim for the quartet. In January, Brooks earned her first Academy Award nominations for reprising her Tony-nominated and Grammy-winning performance as Sofia in the musical reimagining of “The Color Purple.” Meanwhile, Bailey celebrated her first solo Grammy nomination — adding to her five previous nods as half of Chloe x Halle — wrapping up a year that saw her star as Ariel in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” and young Nettie in “The Color Purple.” On the TV side,...

Halle Bailey is hitting back at internet trolls!
The 23-year-old actress and singer kept mum on her pregnancy last year, while the internet went abuzz about whether she was expecting or not.
Now that she has confirmed the birth of her first child, son Halo, she has started sharing old photos and videos.
In one post, she confirmed that she was editing her bump out of photos, and some fans responded claiming she was lying about being pregnant. Halle then clapped back in defense of herself.
Check out what she said inside…
“I don’t think people are mad she hid her pregnancy. People are more so annoyed that she went out of her way to lie and gaslight about it. Then, she shaded people and called them desperate. Now, she wants those same ‘desperate’ people to know every little detail,” one Twitter/X user said in response to another...

Halle Berry‘s movie The Mothership is sadly not going to see the light of day!
It was just revealed that the sci-fi adventure movie has been scrapped by Netflix, over a year after it finished filming.
Halle was set to star as Sara Morse in the film, and she was serving as an executive producer.
Keep reading to find out more…
Filming on the movie started in July 2021 and wrapped later that year. Now, Variety reports that post-production delays have contributed to the cancelation of the movie.
The movie was to “take place one year after the husband of Berry’s character mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm. Now a single mother, Sara Morse and her children discover an extraterrestrial object underneath their home. It (hopefully) leads them to discover the truth about the patriarch’s disappearance.”

I suppose going into a movie like Anyone But You with no expectations helps it land in the “oh, it really wasn’t that bad” category. I’m the exact target demographic for this film; it’s a rom-com with the cheesiness of late 90s and early 2000s rom-coms, two of the hottest (white) actors on the scene today, and a ridiculously cringy plot that is predictable from start to finish. It’s entertaining; there’s some gorgeous scenery and some splendid outfits, and everyone looks stunning, but the most important thing is that the heart is believable amidst the glamour and snark of it all. No, this is not some Oscar-worthy film, nor is it the best romance you’ve ever seen, and no, it’s not even the best comedy you’ve ever seen, but it’s still infectiously amusing, so I’d say it’s worth a watch.

If you thought Michael Bay’s 1998 disaster flick Armageddon – about a team of oil drillers hired by NASA to deflect an asteroid the size of Texas from hitting Earth – was preposterous, well, you’re right. But as it turns out, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has another pick for the most inaccurate sci-fi movie he has ever seen: 2022’s Halle Berry-starring Moonfall.
Appearing on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (via Deadline), the host brought up Armageddon as being the movie that “violates more laws of physics per minute than any other film ever made.” But Tyson went for another director who doesn’t exactly take the time to adhere to scientific accuracy: Roland Emmerich. “It was a pandemic film that came out, you know, Halle Berry, and the moon is approaching Earth, and they learned that it’s hollow and there’s a moon being made out of rocks...

London, July 17 (Ians) Patients who engage in light exercise while undergoing dialysis are physically fitter and are admitted to hospital less frequently than those who do not, according to a large-scale study.
Researchers led by Technical University of Munich (Tum) in Germany believe that exercise programmes should be offered to dialysis patients as a standard.
Severely impaired kidney function people require dialysis several times per week. Many also suffer from additional health issues such as diabetes and heart disease.
“The limitations imposed by these diseases, and the time required for dialysis, often mean that those affected engage in little physical exercise. We wanted to change that,” said Martin Halle, Professor of Preventive and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine at Tum.
In the study, the team involved about 1,000 patients at 21 dialysis centres in Germany.

While her sister Halle has been kept in the bright spotlight recently, Chloe Bailey, 24, has taken a step forward to share it.
On Monday night, one-half of the Chloe X Halle duo headlined the “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” concert. The event took place at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
Chloe performed “What’s Love Got To Do With It” in honor of the late Tina Turner. The 24-year-old wore a tattered shimmering red dress, similar to Turner’s 1978 flame dress designed by Bob Mackie. Turner died of natural causes last month.
Others in attendance were Vice President Kamala Harris and performers Charlie Wilson, Nelly, Miguel, Kirk Franklin, Swv, Davido, Coi Leray and Jodeci.

Los Angeles, May 21 (Ians) Hollywood star Halle Bailey says seeing a black Little Mermaid character as a child would have changed her “whole life”.
The singer and actress, 23, is starring as mermaid Ariel in the upcoming live action remake of Disney’s 1989 “The Little Mermaid” animation, and said if the cartoon had been more diverse, it would have increased her “confidence”, reports ‘Female First UK’.
Halle, who shot to fame as a teen pop star as one half of the duo Chloe x Halle with her older sister, told The Guardian: “I feel like, if I would have had a black mermaid, that would have been insane, that would have changed my whole perspective, my whole life, my confidence, my self-worth.”

Melissa McCarthy "begged" for her role in 'The Little Mermaid'.The 52-year-old actress plays Ursula the sea witch in Disney's new live action remake of the beloved 1989 animated classic, but she has admitted she wasn't in consideration for the part until she really put herself out there. She told Collider: "I wasn't up on the list, I wasn't on the list, I wasn't list adjacent, and I was like, 'I'm not gonna get it', but I knew I had to at least make a play for it because I was like, 'I'll be so mad at myself forever if I didn't even try to get, you know, turned down.'"And I couldn't call Rob because I didn't have (director) Rob Marshall’s number, but I knew a guy who knew a guy, and I just said, 'Can I please come and talk to you? Rob Marshall has hit out at the "archaic" backlash to Halle Bailey's casting in 'The Little Mermaid'.The 62-year-old director's decision to cast the Chloe x Halle star as Ariel in the live-action remake of the Disney classic was met with a negative response because of Halle's skin colour but Rob cannot understand the anger.Speaking to Deadline, he said: "I didn't think it was that big a deal, casting a woman of colour. I thought, that's an archaic way to see the world."When that controversy arose, from narrow-minded people, I thought, wow, that really feels like it's coming from another century. Are we really still there?"However, Rob is proud that the casting will leave an impression on young girls and boys of colour. The 'Mary Poppins Returns' director said: "But the bonus that came with this casting, and I wasn't aware of it at the time,...

Halle Bailey found it "frightening" having to act without her voice in 'The Little Mermaid'.The 23-year-old star plays Ariel in the live-action remake of the Disney movie and discussed the limitations placed on her voice as her character trades the use of her vocal cords for human legs in a deal with sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) in the film.Halle – who is one half of the music duo Chloe x Halle with her sister Chloe Bailey – told The Hollywood Reporter: "It definitely was a little frightening to play losing my voice, but it was also really cool because, as singers, we go on this thing called vocal rest whenever our voice is in distress or we use it too much. So it's almost like this really cool meditative state that you get to go in, and it makes you just calm down and reset."So of course,...

Exclusive: After a herniated disc during a Cats performance prompted Rob Marshall to switch from dancer to director, his first feature, Chicago, won Best Picture. It has been a charmed run for Marshall since, with hits from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine, Annie, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. Rarely has Marshall been as charged up as he is after coming through a four-year ordeal to turn Disney’s 1989 2-D animated classic musical The Little Mermaid into a live action feature. Beyond the logistical complexities of staging a musical set half undersea and the other half on land where the title character sacrifices her voice for a chance at life as a human, the film is the most color blind major studio adaptation of a classic property you’ve ever seen.

Halle Bailey made quite a splash at the London premiere of The Little Mermaid on Monday, where she, alongside her co-stars Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, as well as director Rob Marshall, walked the blue carpet to promote their new movie.
Bailey held hands with Hauer-King for some of the photos.
The 23-year-old, who portrays Ariel in the live-action remake of the Disney classic, attended the premiere wearing a stunning custom white gown by Miss Sohee. The dress featured a shell-like neckline adorned with silver gems that paid homage to her character’s signature seashell bra, a sheer backless detail, and a mermaid-style train.
Styled by Nichole Good, Bailey paired the look with a crystal-embellished silver headpiece and pearl earrings.
The singer-turned-actress later took to social media to express her gratitude for the London premiere, saying “big thank you London for celebrating our film tonight with us 10 more days.

Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, went through three months of rehearsals for the part, which included learning to ride horses, work with dogs, scuba dive, row and operate a horse carriage. “I’ve never done so much training in my life,” says the 27-year-old London native, whose credits include 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home and the BBC drama World on Fire.
Hauer-King first tried out for The Little Mermaid as a “fun experience,” thinking it would never go anywhere. Seven months of auditions ensued, which included an Ariel-esque moment of losing his voice the day before he was asked to sing in front of director Rob Marshall (he met with Marshall a few weeks later to try again). "American Idol" is no stranger to a theme week, but the singing competition show struck a bit of collaborative gold by timing their Disney week with the upcoming release of the live-action "The Little Mermaid," which was the perfect opportunity to showcase Ariel herself, Halle Bailey, singing "Part of Your World."
With the exception of moronic racists who desperately need to have their keyboards taken away until they learn how to act with some common decency, Bailey's casting has been the main motivating factor for folks to turn up to see the new film, as the trailer had many fearing "The Little Mermaid" was going to follow the way of the "live-action" adaptation of "The Lion King." Regardless of how the final product turns out, there's one thing to be sure: Halle Bailey is Ariel.

It’s been a tough time in Hollywood and beyond as the Writers Guild strike shut down production of just about every kind of entertainment — and lots of parties and events, too. Canceled/postponed celebrations included the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman, the Critics Choice Inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television and many others.
But music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival marked the early beginning of summer fest season and Netflix helped launch Pride Month early with a huge “All Out” celebration in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid” swam into Hollywood for a lavish premiere and SeriesFest: Chapter 9 took over Denver. So all is not lost in the world of Parties & Premieres, but we sure hope that Hollywood writers get the raises they deserve and go back to work very soon.

Halle Bailey was swimmingly stunning in her gorgeous fishtail dress during the premiere of The Little Mermaid in Los Angeles, erasing any doubts that she was fit for her role in the live action remake of the Disney animated classic The Little Mermaid (1989).

Hollywood Boulevard was taken under the sea on Monday for the long-awaited world premiere of The Little Mermaid.
“I feel honored to be here today, I’m so grateful that everybody’s going to be able to watch it all together, and I just cannot wait, honestly,” Halle Bailey, who takes on the iconic role of Ariel in Disney’s live-action adaptation, told reporters on the red carpet.

But other than that it was just a lot of strength training.”

By this point, we’ve come to accept live-action remakes of Disney animated classics as part of our world. No matter your feelings about 2017’s Beauty and the Beast or 2019’s The Lion King — that they reimagine beloved stories for a new generation or that they are reheated cash grabs that diminish their better predecessors — there’s no denying their success. In fact, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are both among the top 20 highest-grossing movies of all time.
So it’s easy to see why fans are interested in the latest movie in the genre, The Little Mermaid. The 1989 adaptation of a story by Hans Christian Andersen from directors John Musker and Ron Clemens kicked off the Disney Renaissance, reversing a trend that included flops The Black Cauldron and Oliver and Company and starting a run of highly-respected and award-winning films, leading to 1991’s Beauty and the Beast,...

Halle Bailey’s no. 1 fan is her own sister, and their sweet moment on the carpet at Monday’s premiere of “The Little Mermaid” made that abundantly clear.
As Halle’s sister, Chlöe Bailey, spoke with Et’s Nischelle Turner on the blue carpet in Hollywood, their chat was punctuated by Halle’s arrival — which led to the pair yelling as they ran across the carpet to one another and embraced.
It was a heartwarming and emotional moment of sisterly love that had Halle beaming as she came to speak with Et shortly after.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so happy that my sister’s here,” Halle gushed. “It makes me so happy that she’s here. It makes my whole day.”

Chlöe Bailey is a protective big sister.
Chlöe, 24, appeared on the latest episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show”, where Hudson mentioned that when they were babies, Halle Bailey, 23, was her “little doll.”
Chlöe recalled, “I would feed her. Even though I was only a year and a half older, I would always feed her, I’d carry her around.
“Tracy was my baby doll from day one, but once Halle came around, Tracy got replaced. I feel like a momma bear sometimes, even though I’m her sister, so it’s a little weird. I’m so protective.”

To make The Little Mermaid work, there are many things you need to get right. And perhaps more important than any of the technical challenges – or facing up to the pressure of tackling one of Disney’s most beloved animated classics – it all comes down to this: audiences really need to feel the connection between adventurous mermaid Ariel, and human seafarer Prince Eric.
