CBS executives were keenly aware of the elephant in the room Thursday as new co-ceo George Cheeks and entertainment president Amy Reisenbach opened their fall schedule presentation by addressing the latest rumblings in the sale process of parent company Paramount Global.
“It’s a super quiet, uneventful week for us,” Cheeks quipped as he kicked off the hourlong presentation just moments after news broke that Sony and Apollo submitted a $26 billion cash offer to buy Paramount Global.
Other than addressing morale — “we’ve all locked arms” and are “focusing on what we can control,” Cheeks said — both execs spent the press briefing at the Paramount offices in Hollywood focused on CBS and its 2024-25 schedule.
Cheeks and Reisenbach opened with a victory lap of sorts as CBS finished the strikes-impacted 2023-24 in first place, breaking a decades-old record set by the network with 16 straight season victories and 21 of the past 22 years.

CBS is taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook by announcing its programming success in the billions of minutes watched.
If you were wondering what that might mean to a broadcast network, it measures out to 456 billion minutes of CBS programming watched in the first four months of 2024.
With two new hits on its hands — Tracker and Elsbeth — this doesn’t surprise us in the least.
Here’s the real measure of their success, though.
Viewers delivered over 30% more time spent in front of CBS programming than Netflix and over 231% more than all other streamers combined.
No wonder they’re patting themselves on the back.
Those are incredible numbers that often go unnoticed when you use traditional ratings tools to deliver the news.
Even crazier, the time spent watching CBS programming has increased by 5.8% over the same period in 2023.
People often wonder how shows can be considered a success...

Led by ‘Tracker,’ CBS Declares Early Viewership Victory for the Truncated 2023-2024 Broadcast Season
Though the 2023-2024 TV season isn’t over yet, CBS is on track to maintain its title as the most-watched network for the 16th season in a row. Provided it stays on top over the next month, the broadcaster would break its own record for the longest-ever winning streak, which was set between 1955 and 1970.
According to Live + 7 data measured by Nielsen through April 21, CBS is averaging 5.59 million viewers, putting it 580,000 ahead of its closest competitor, which is NBC with an average 5.01 million viewers. ABC and Fox trail behind at 4.29 million and 3.35 million viewers, respectively.
The winning lineup is led by “Tracker,” the Justin Hartley-led drama series that is not only the most-watched new series of the season but the most-watched series overall. Behind “Tracker,” CBS also has the next three most-watched shows: “NCIS,” “Young Sheldon” and “FBI.” The No. 5 series is NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” followed by two more CBS titles,...

CBS’ Tracker released earlier this year may have brought Justin Hartley to a whole new level of fame, but the actor’s face was very well-known before the show hit the channel back in February.
Several years before he landed the leading role in Tracker, Hartley starred in NBC’s family drama series This Is Us, the appearance in which may have foreseen something bigger coming in the actor’s way from CBS’ part in particular.
Though the series eventually ended back in 2022 letting Hartley jump straight to Tracker, such a transition surely felt like a drastic change in all aspects, but Hartley seemingly had no problem with it at all.
A brief disclaimer for those who didn’t get to see any of these shows so far: Hartley’s roles have solid zero matches in the characters’ looks and personalities. In This Is Us, the actor portrays Kevin Pearson,...

CBS’ Tracker is seemingly aiming at expanding Colter Shaw’s inner world drama with some exciting guest stars’ appearance — and so many fans are hoping to see much more than just a one-episode-long family affair.
With the recent news revealed by Tracker’s leading actor Justin Hartley himself, Jensen Ackles’ cameo in the penultimate episode of the show’s first season is getting more anticipation than everything that we’ll get to see in the finale.
Though so far nothing can be said about how big Ackles’ role will get to be in the series, the actor’s fans think his previous experience may help him land something more than just a quick cameo.
Jensen Ackles has recently been confirmed to take up the role of Russell Shaw, Colter’s alienated older brother captured in several flashbacks earlier, but the role was given to Mathew Nelson-Mahood back then.

In 2003, martial arts enthusiast Lauro Chartrand-DelValle took a job as stunt coordinator on Edward Zwick‘s historical action film “The Last Samurai” and assumed it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I thought I was extremely fortunate to get a chance to do a samurai epic once in my career,” Chartrand-DelValle told IndieWire. He was thrilled, therefore, when Hiroyuki Sanada, one of the actors from “The Last Samurai,” revealed that he was working on FX’s new adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” and wanted to collaborate with Chartrand-DelValle again. “It was a dream job,” the stunt coordinator said.
Like “The Last Samurai,” “Shōgun” is a period epic filled with elaborately choreographed action and massive challenges for a stunt team, but Chartrand-DelValle felt well prepared given the series’ generous pre-production schedule. “Right out of the gate the first huge task was to train everybody as best we could prior to going in front of the camera,...

The mystery that shrouded stories told in procedural dramas like Law & Order has always been a key element that kept the viewers close to their screens waiting for another crime to be brilliantly solved.
And though throughout the years of the genre’s existence such kind of plot has become a bit trite, its popularity never fell victim to other hyping storylines — but a slight change of shape has surely done a good thing for crime-coded series.
One of CBS' most recent hits, an action drama show Tracker, comes as a striking example of the fact that the story can take a drastically different turn if just one element from the plot gets changed for something else.
Tracker’s storyline revolves around Colter Shaw whose incredible talent for tracking people or things (in a good way) could’ve easily won him a generously paid job in the police, but he...

CBS’ Tracker has become a major hit even before the show managed to get to its season 1’s finale — and the second season is already on its way while Tracker still has two more episodes to air with.
Given the show’s growing popularity, it wouldn’t be very surprising to see some familiar faces in the recurring roles, and the series itself is already on it — with a famous actor whose role actually makes a lot of sense.

If you've been wondering when we'll meet the mysterious, potentially deadly old brother of our favorite reward-seeker, Colter Shaw, you are in Big-time luck.
News dropped officially via Justin Hartley's Ig page that Jensen Ackles -- yes, That Jensen Ackles -- would be joining Tracker as Russell Shaw. And the internet is going Wild.
Why are they going crazy, exactly? Because Justin Hartley and Jensen Ackles teaming up in an action-adventure series as brothers is just about the most perfect casting I've seen in a while.
And it goes far beyond the fact that they could actually pass for long-lost siblings.
Colter's journey throughout Tracker Season 1 has taken him across the United States, where he's helped countless people track down missing loved ones and even those who weren't necessarily looking to be found.
But while he's been racing around, saving the day and collecting his paychecks, he hasn't been able to outrun his past.

Actor Justin Hartley has become a huge primetime star with his iconic role in This Is Us as Kevin Pearson, not to mention his huge breakout hit this year, playing Colter Shaw on Tracker. Still, he recently had an interview where he talked about his “ridiculous” start on soap operas.
Justin Hartley’s – Early Daytime Drama Days
Before diving into the world of primetime, Hartley started in the land of daytime drama. From 2002-2006, he was in the soap opera (now canceled) called Passions where he played Nicholas Foxworth “Fox” Crane.
Not overly shocking, but the show took advantage of Justin’s chiseled features and ripped physique, showcasing him in plentiful scenes where Hartley walked around without a shirt on.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Tracker Season 1 Episode 9 “Aurora.”] While it may seem like a girl who has been missing for three years can’t be the person her father spots in a newspaper photo, it turns out in the latest Tracker episode that he’s right. Colter (Justin Hartley) digs after her father hires him, and he finds out that she and her friends were into paranormal activity, murder podcasts, the spirit world, and an old abandoned mental hospital. While he follows up on those leads with local law enforcement, the investigation turns to a man already locked up for a murder and potential partner. Colter goes to talk to his sister…and finds she’s the one who’s been holding the missing girl captive, in the basement in a small crawl space. (She had taken the girl with her to a county fair when the city inspected her house, and the photo...

Justin Hartley took a big risk career-wise when he took his now iconic role as Kevin Pearson in This Is Us. At the time, he was primarily a pretty face in soaps, and he took a big risk that completely paid off. Recently, the Tracker star reflected on his early soap days, and some of the “ridiculous” things he did when he got his start. So, what did he have to say?
Justin Hartley Got His Start As The Pretty Face In Soaps
It’s no secret that soaps have a tried and true formula of casting pretty people to star in them. Often, former models looking to break into acting find themselves on various soap operas. This is one industry where having a pretty face and toned abs can certainly work in your favor.
This was exactly the case for Justin Hartley when he broke into the industry and first got his start.

Crime procedurals have thrived on primetime television for over two decades, and several of them are still streamed frequently.
Popular shows like Law & Order, Law & Order: Svu, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and NCIS have existed since the 1990s and the 2000s. Due to their popularity, these series have created multiple spinoffs and revivals.
Almost every network has at least one crime procedural on their primetime TV lineup. NBC has an entire night devoted to the Law & Order Universe. CBS has more procedurals than we can count, and they recently added another with Tracker, led by Justin Hartley.
While crime procedurals are still one of the most-watched genres, has the primetime TV lineup become overstuffed with them?
Let's discuss why some of them have thrived for years and the potential upcoming scheduling issues.

It’s a This Is Us reunion! Jon Huertas, who starred on the NBC drama with Justin Hartley, directed the April 21 episode of Tracker, which is already a hit for CBS (and is coming back for a second season). “It was a great episode. It really came together really well. We worked really hard on it, so I’m proud of it,” Huertas tells TV Insider. “It’s always great to work with Justin.” In the episode, “Aurora,” Colter (Hartley) searches for a missing girl who disappeared three years ago and is presumed dead. Her father shows him a newspaper photo from a recent county fair he’s convinced is her, and Colter’s search leads him into the world of amateur ghost hunting and paranormal activity. Below, Huertas talks about reuniting with Hartley, directing this episode, and more. Talk about reuniting with Justin and directing him again outside of This Is Us.

Was Justin Hartley nervous about the launch of his new drama series, Tracker, which had the honor of premiering in this year’s coveted post–Super Bowl timeslot? According to the actor formerly known as Kevin Pearson on NBC‘s This Is Us, not until the intense 49ers–Chiefs game went into overtime. “I was like, ‘Oh, so we’re asking people to tune in [to our show] at 11:15 pm?’” he says. Thanks to what Hartley calls “the power of the Super Bowl, the power of Taylor Swift, the power of the NFL and a really great game,” those worries were short-lived, as 18.4 million live viewers stayed up for Tracker’s premiere. Beyond that solid debut, episodes in the drama’s regular timeslot averaged a strong 7.2 million live viewers. “All of that is a testament to how good of a show we’re putting out, and it’s just ...

In spite of its placement in TV’s best time slot, CBS‘ Tracker is garnering a lot of negative attention due its inconsistent schedule. The drama series starring This Is Us actor Justin Hartley was one of the newest hits on network TV following its big breakout premiere after the record-breaking 2024 Super Bowl on February 11. However, fans have not only been shorted two episodes of the premiere season (once in March for March Madness and again in April for the CMT Music Awards), but the airing time keeps changing as well. Initially, the drama was set to air at 9/8c every Sunday night. However, following the week off air for the CMT Music Awards, the network moved the air time to 8/7c to make space for The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden, a one-time event also set to air on April 14. CBS’s Tracker season one episode eight finds Colter (Justin Hartley) heading to Camden, Maine to take on the case of a missing dockworker named Ethan Sullivan. Sully’s fiancée, Daniella, is offering a $10,000 reward.

Colter speaks with Daniella and learns Sully’s smart and wants to get off the docks. Daniella’s parents stress the wedding is in two weeks, so they need answers now. They have already spent a lot of money, and now they need to come up with a $10,000 reward. The timing’s not great.

“Abbott Elementary” received the same three supporting acting Emmy nominations across its first two seasons: Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph for supporting actress and Tyler James Williams for supporting actor. The comedy is likely to pick up those three bids again for its third season this year, but will it score any beyond that? Also eligible are Lisa Ann Walter in supporting actress (eighth place in our combined odds), as well as Chris Perfetti (10th place) and William Stanford Davis (21st place) in supporting actor — and their categories may be open enough for them finally to break in.
Walter, Perfetti and Davis missing for Season 1 is not at all surprising. Exclusive: The results are in, and Tracker is still top dog at CBS.
The Justin Hartley-led series is leading the charge for the network’s scripted premieres in 35-day multi-platform viewing, just as it was in seven-day numbers.
The second episode of the series, which aired during CBS’ premiere week for all other scripted programming, is up to 17.3M multi-platform viewers after 35 days, adding another 5M viewers from its seven-day audience.
CBS is looking to the second episode of Tracker for its premiere week ratings, since the series debuted after Super Bowl Lviii. While the premiere has amassed an impressive 33M viewers since it aired after the Kansas City Chiefs’ second consecutive win, it’s not necessarily a great indicator of how the series has been performing overall. That second episode, though, is a better metric for the audience the series retained as it settled into that Sunday primetime slot.

Bobby (Eric Graise) is on the scene too, and fills Colter in on Sun. It turns out she’s a rising Mma star and quite a skilled fighter.
