Variety has hired award-winning journalist Tatiana Siegel as executive editor, film & media. In her new post, Siegel will help guide Variety’s coverage of the film and media business, as well as write covers, features, analysis pieces and investigative stories.
Siegel, who most recently worked as a senior writer for Rolling Stone and previously served as executive film editor at The Hollywood Reporter, is best known for her hard-hitting examinations of the entertainment business. In recent years, she produced several industry-shaking exposés, one that resulted in the ouster of Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara, and another that revealed decades of bullying by film and theater producer Scott Rudin.
Siegel had a five-year stint at Variety between 2007-2012. She re-joins the magazine on Jan. 1.
“We are beyond excited to welcome Tatiana Siegel back to Variety where she belongs,” said Ramin Setoodeh and Cynthia Littleton, Variety’s co-editors-in-chief. “As one...

Brendan Fraser received a rousing standing ovation at the screening of "The Whale" at the Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 4. "The standing ovation for #TheWhale was so enthusiastic, Brendan Fraser tried to leave the theater but the crowd's applause made him stay," Variety's Ramin Setoodeh tweeted after the premiere.
In a reply to Setoodeh's tweet, Fraser's former costar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson celebrated the positive reception. "Man this makes me so happy to see this beautiful ovation for Brendan," Johnson wrote, going on to thank Fraser for helping him out when he first started acting. "He supported me coming into his Mummy Returns franchise for my first ever role, which kicked off my Hollywood career," the star wrote. "Rooting for all your success brother and congrats to my bud Darren Aronofsky."
Johnson's first-ever acting role was in 2001's "The Mummy Returns," in which he played the Scorpion King alongside Fraser's intrepid explorer Rick O'Connell.

In one of the sweetest and most emotional moments of the Venice Film Festival so far, Brendan Fraser received an outpouring of love in the form of a standing ovation after the world premiere of his latest film The Whale. The film, based on a Samuel D. Hunter play, was directed by Darren Aronofsky and features Fraser as Charlie, a morbidly obese man looking to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink) before his death.
Fraser has been enjoying a huge comeback after years of relative obscurity through the 2010s, which was in part due to retaliation he received when he was allegedly sexually assaulted by the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Fraser’s performance has been heralded as a revelation in The Whale with critics at the screening generally agreeing that he brings a warmth and tenderness to Charlie that elevates the film.

Harry Styles delighted audience members at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Don’t Worry Darling by planting a big kiss on his co-star Nick Kroll.
Olvia Wilde’s sci-fi starring Styles and Florence Pugh as the leads received a vivacious, five-minute standing ovation at the festival, which is known for giving long applauses after screenings.
Variety’s Co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh was in attendance and captured the moment that Styles kissed Kroll as the cast were leaving the cinema.
The video shows the former One Direction star grip Kroll on either side of his head before pulling him in for a kiss, leading to screams and applause from the crowd.
The pair then laugh together before walking off in an embrace.
Despite the warm Venician reception, Don’t Worry Darling has so far received middling reviews at best with critics nonetheless praising Pugh’s performance for its intensity while criticising Styles’ for its lack of energy.

Florence Pugh made it to the Venice Film Festival in time for the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling, and while the actress didn’t participate in the pre-screening press conference, there were still plenty of awkward non-moments between her and the film’s director, Olivia Wilde.
Pugh walked the festival’s red carpet with the rest of the Don’t Worry Darling team Monday, and while she posed for whole group shots as well as photos with co-stars Gemma Chan, Sydney Chandler, Chris Pine and Nick Kroll, Pugh and Wilde...

The Cannes debut of “Three Thousand Years of Longing” was never going to be a dull affair.
George Miller’s long-gestating follow-up to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which also premiered out of competition at Cannes, is one of the festival’s most anticipated titles. The dialogue-driven fantasy marks a sharp divergence from the action-heavy “Fury Road,” and many cinephiles were eager to see the Australian director surprise audiences again. But few expected the shocking surprises to begin on the red carpet.
As the film’s stars, which include Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, arrived at the premiere, an incident occurred on the red carpet. An unidentified woman, who appeared to be wearing a shirt that said “Scum” on the back, burst onto the scene and began screaming at the top of her lungs. The activist appeared to be protesting sexual violence against and suppression of women, as Scum is a...

A woman was removed from the Cannes Film Festival red carpet during the world premiere of George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing.” Video footage from the carpet saw a woman trying to crash the event while screaming at the top of her lungs. The woman was quickly removed from the carpet by a handful of security guards.
The topless woman was wearing only panties and had the word “scum” written on her lower back. Blood red paint also appeared on her lower back and legs. The colors of the Ukrainian flag were spray-painted across the woman’s torso, as were the words: “Stop raping us.” Security guards quickly covered up the woman and removed her from the red carpet.
Variety has reached out to the Cannes Film Festival press office for comment.

The Variety Welcome to Cannes party at the Unifrance terrace was the place to be on Thursday afternoon, with guests including Eva Longoria, Sony Pictures Classics’ Tom Bernard and Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente.
The hot ticket event was a bubbles and canapes celebration where the movers and shakers of the entertainment industry turned up in force to mingle after two years of Covid-caused separation.
Dea Lawrence, chief operating and marketing officer of Variety, kicked off proceedings by saying that Variety has been covering the Cannes Film Festival for 75 of the publication’s 116 years of existence and that Variety.com has 35 million unique users. “That makes Variety the No. 1 entertainment brand in the universe,” Lawrence said.
For Variety executive editor Ramin Setoodeh, it was a doubly joyous occasion as the event also coincided with his birthday.

Tom Cruise showed just why he’s the biggest movie star in the world with his 45-minute masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival.
The sold-out crowd at the Grand Palais’ Debussy theater waited in line patiently for an hour under the blazing afternoon sun and could barely contain their impatience as festival director Thierry Fremaux introduced the event. They watched a montage of the actor’s most memorable scenes — set to Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra” — then broke out in frenzied applause during the famous lip-synching sequence from “Risky Business.”
As soon as Cruise hit the stage, he received a standing ovation.

Following the retrospective nature of the montage, the main thrust of Cruise’s narrative during the event was looking back at his career, with an emphasis on learning the craft of cinema.
