Filmmaker Gareth Edwards gained recognition with 2010’s Monsters in which he not only served as the writer-director but also the cinematographer and visual effects artist. Monsters received a positive response upon its release and was followed by Edwards directing 2014’s Godzilla, and 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The filmmaker returned to making original films with 2023’s The Creator. The story is set in 2070, 15 years after the AI has set off a nuclear detonation in Los Angeles starting a war between humans and AI. An ex-special force is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator of the weapon to end the power. The movie received a positive response from the audience and critics and Gareth Edwards’ visual effects were highly lauded making him a perfect choice for the upcoming Jurassic World.

After traveling to dozens of exotic locations around the world to film New Regency’s and 20th Century Studios’ The Creator, director Gareth Edwards made one last trek that was among his most consequential: to Industrial Light & Magic in Northern California. There, he showed a rough cut of the film to the VFX pros who would be tasked with helping him make his $80 million film look like it cost $200 million, turning human actors into robots — no uncanny valley allowed — and creating futuristic cities and secret labs by augmenting real-life locations with visual effects.
Many of the key moments onscreen were filled with temporary text such as “epic Nomad shot,” a reference to the killer space station at the center of the film concerning a war between humans and artificial intelligence.

Oscar-nominated artisans landed historical firsts in numerous categories in this year’s race. After decades in the industry, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick earned her first nod for “Oppenheimer.” Scott George became the first Osage Nation songwriter to be nominated for his song in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” while Diane Warren scored a record 15th nod. John Williams bested his record-breaking achievement when he was recognized for original score.
When they’re not making history, what makes these artisans special is their storytelling through their craft. Building worlds and environments with rich, lush textures to immerse audiences into their scapes.
Here, Variety takes a look at the nominated artisans across all the crafts ahead of the guild awards and Oscars on March 10.

Women dominate the category, snagging all five slots. Ellen Mirojnick nabbed her first costume design nomination for “Oppenheimer.” With credits that include “Basic Instinct,” “Showgirls” and “Bridgerton,...

You get the feeling from talking to four of the Oscar-nominated members from the sound team of the sci-fi action thriller “The Creator” – supervising sound editor/sound designers Erik Aadahl and Ethan Van der Ryn, sound mixer Ian Voigt and rerecording mixer Tom Ozanich – that they have never been through anything quite like the adventure they just experienced providing the sonics for this feature. It was shot on location in many countries throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, the director Gareth Edwards eschewing backlot and green screen while recreating the vibe of a small indie production. “We shot it guerilla style, but then fuse all of this technology into what looks and sounds like a $300 million movie but isn’t,” stresses Aadahl.
“Sonically, Gareth wanted to combine this sort of realism using the actual sounds of nature in all of these different countries with the very...

Take that, Golden Globes. Chelsea Handler did a masterful job hosting the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards, nailing the jokes and showing she completely understood the assignment. Hosting for the second consecutive year, Handler kept the show on track and even called an audible late into the broadcast, bringing Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie to the stage to accept the Best Comedy Movie award – one of a dozen not scheduled to be handed out on stage.
The acceptance speeches were heartfelt, lively, and memorable, and America Ferrera’s SeeHer acceptance speech will go down as one of the better speeches in Critics Choice Awards‘ history. Harrison Ford kept his Career Achievement Award acceptance speech short, recognizing the positive changes in the industry over his decades as an actor.

The great Paul Giamatti seems well on his way towards winning an Oscar for The Holdovers, with the actor taking home another prestigious award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. Emma Stone also took home a trophy for Poor Things. At the same time, Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer dominated the rest of the big awards, making it seem like the giant iceberg a lot of other awards season hopefuls are bound to crash into. The other half of the Barbenheimer equation, Barbie, was no slouch either, taking home a Best Screenplay award and Best Comedy. Still, it was shut out of the acting awards, with Robert Downey Jr. on his way to a potential Oscar win, nabbing best-supporting actor for Oppenheimer. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actress award for The Holdovers. Poor Bradley Cooper and Maestro were entirely shut out, with that film’s chances of winning major...

The 29th Critics Choice Awards will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 14, celebrating achievements in both television and film in a host of above- and below-the-line categories. Scroll down for our official odds in all 37 film and TV categories with our projected winners highlighted in gold.
On the film side of the ceremony, “Barbie” enters the night with the most nominations of any film with 18 citations, the most of any film in the history of the Critics Choice Awards. Every year numerous films are overlooked, underrated, and lost in the shuffle. 2023 was no exception. Several sci-fi movies with merit failed to garner attention, find an audience, or receive a fair appraisal. Such outcomes can be attributed to market saturation with similar themes and concepts, exemplified by this year's surplus of films centered around AI or featuring talented actors who lack significant box office appeal. Alternatively, a film may be flawed, resulting in mixed reviews and audience reactions, yet still possessing commendable qualities.
For the purposes of this list, "underrated" refers to sci-fi films that received relatively mixed or poor responses from both critics and audiences, with a focus on those that lacked significant attention or acclaim. We'll review the notable qualities of these films and explore the reasons behind their inadequate recognition, whether it's one of Marvel's unfairly maligned sequels or a quirky, futuristic sci-fi spin on conceiving a child,...

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) returned to theaters back in September with The Creator, and the sci-fi action thriller is now headed home to Hulu this month.
The Creator will be streaming exclusively on Hulu beginning December 20. If you’d rather not wait, the film is currently available for VOD rental beginning at just $5.99.
At the worldwide box office, The Creator ended its run with $104 million, which would’ve been a win for an original genre movie if not for the $80 million price tag. An $80 million production budget for a movie on this scale is relatively cheap, it’s important to note, but the film needed to make quite a bit more money in theaters to be considered a box office success.
The film stars John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award® winner Allison Janney (I,...

Director Gareth Edwards' "The Creator" debuted earlier this year in late September to a tidal wave of hype, generated in large part by its rarity as a blockbuster-sized piece of entertainment that wasn't based on pre-existing IP, for a change. The end result was a solid enough adventure weighed down by a rather tropey script.
Frustratingly, the online interest surrounding "The Creator" didn't quite translate to box office performance, turning the "Godzilla" and "Rogue One" filmmaker's blank-check production after his stints with franchise filmmaking into a bit of a commercial disappointment. Thankfully, however, its theatrical release need not be the final word on what remains an undeniably fascinating and gorgeous-looking visual feast for the eyes.
With the year beginning to wind down in earnest, 20th Century Studios is now looking ahead to the home media release of "The Creator.

The 2023 film The Creator boasts of a stellar cast and a riveting story. It is a science-fiction thriller that reimagines the world with more AI involvement. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Ken Watanabe and Allison Janney. Gareth Edwards who worked on Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story produced and directed the film. The Creator has been positively received and this is mostly for its production and directing. The story on the other hand has been heavily critized. While critics are not fond of the film’s story, it does ask very important...

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator,” in theaters now, is a unique kind of sci-fi blockbuster from a major studio in that, while it looks like it cost a lot to make, the “Rogue One” director and his filmmaking team’s indie spirit and approach to the production actually kept the budget of the 20th Century Studios film under $100 million. Here’s how they did it.
The film is a tale set in the distant sci-fi future, where a war against artificial intelligence rages on. The U.S. is almost completely anti-ai while New Asia, a region of southeast Asia, still allows it. A former special operative (played by John David Washington), is tasked with tracking down the AI’s secret weapon: a little kid (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) who has the power to control technology.

Gareth Edwards‘ The Creator takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which Americans dedicate themselves to hunting beings of artificial intelligence protected by people in a Southeastern country known as New Asia who treat sad beings as equals.
A former United States Army soldier, Joshua Taylor (John Taylor Washington), who after five years of losing his wife, Maya Fey-Taylor (Gemma Chan), to an attack from American soldiers, is recruited by the United States Army to go to New Asia and find the weapon known as Alpha-o.
The weapon was created by Nirmata (the word for “Creator” in Hindi), the person responsible for New Asia’s advancements in artificial intelligence. He is told that Fey-Taylor is still alive. Taylor finds out that the weapon is a robotic simulant created in the form of a child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), whom he nicknames “Alphie.”

For “The Creator,” writer/director Gareth Edwards developed a world in the not-so-distant future where mankind and AI are locked in a battle for survival.
As it has throughout history, war has spurred technological development: the U.S. Army deployed a massive orbital defense platform called Nomad to hunt down AI targets, and the AI leader known as The Creator manufactured a weapon to disable it — the child Alpha Omega aka Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).
TheWrap sat down with Edwards to talk about the film’s AI war with humanity, its origin and who emerges victorious at the end of the film.
Spoiler alert: Read on for major plot reveals from “The Creator.”

This post contains massive spoilers for the film "The Creator"
Gareth Edward's "The Creator" is set largely in 2070 when intelligent machines have come to populate most of the Earth. The United States is recovering from a nuclear attack, as a bomb was dropped on Los Angeles by some rogue AI that never revealed its motivation. The U.S. has since waged war on all AI, regularly invading other nations to hunt down and kill robots and their creators. America's key weapon is a massive suborbital airship called the Nomad that can scan the countryside for enemies and bomb them the instant they are found. The Nomad, it is said in dialogue, will easily wipe out all robot life on Earth.
One of the U.S. soldiers/agents is Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) who has located a counter-weapon that the androids intend to launch against the Nomad. As it so happens,...

Four new movies ended a month full of sequels, some of which did better than others, but in this case the sequels ended up doing better than most expected, and there were some bona fide surprises. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The big winner of the weekend was Paramount Pictures’ “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” the first family film to get a theatrical release in months. It entered theaters with an 81% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it was essentially a review-proof movie with name-brand value among parents with kids. It opened in second place on Friday with $6.8 million but then grossed a solid $23 million (estimated) for the weekend. It received an “A” CinemaScore, which was not surprising due to its appeal to those same parents with kids.
Lionsgate released “Saw X,” the 10th chapter in the horror franchise that just won’t die, into 3,262 theaters on Friday.

Happy pups prevailed at the domestic box office this weekend as Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie scared off Saw X and The Creator with $23 million from 3,989 theaters in a needed win for the family marketplace.
The news was just as good overseas, where the sequel flexed its muscle in opening to $23.1 million from 45 markets for a global bow of $46.1 million, a 70 percent uptick over the last pic. Parents and kids made up 90 percent of the audience in North America, where the sequel over-indexed in most regions save for the western part of the U.S.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which cost a lean $30 million to produce before marketing, follows the success of 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie that helped solidify Paramount chief Brian Robbins’ standing. That film opened to $13.1 million domestically before turning into a sleeper hit and grossing $140 million globally, a notable figure considering the pandemic and a day-and-date debut on Paramount+.

Gareth Edwards has many thoughts on the ending of “The Creator,” but he’s even more interested in what audiences think about how the sci-fi film — which depicts a war between mankind and AI — concludes.
In any war, the director notes, sacrifices are made. And in “The Creator’s” case, the ending is “bittersweet,” Edwards noted.
TheWrap asked him to elaborate on the final scenes and their implications (find out if there’s a post-credit here). Obviously, major spoilers from “The Creator” lie ahead, so you’ve been warned.

How does “The Creator” end?
In the final act, Joshua (John David Washington) rescues the AI child Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) from the U.S. Army.
Using Alphie’s ability to control machines, the two commandeer a commercial flight into space and fly to the orbital defense platform Nomad, just as the U.

‘Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie’ Barking Louder Than ‘Saw X’ and ‘The Creator’ For Easy Box Office Win
After the success of Barbenheimer, audiences will now reveal if they have an appetite for what’s being dubbed “Saw Patrol” this weekend as Paramount’s kid-friendly Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie goes up against Lionsgate’s horror feature Saw X.
Both movies did respectable business on Friday. Saw X won the day with an estimated $8 million — including $2 million in Thursday night grosses — although Paw Patrol will take the lead sometime on Saturday for a weekend opening in the $22.5 million range, ahead of 2021’s Paw Patrol: The Movie, which came out during the tough days of the pandemic and debuted to $13.1 million.
While the Internet bestowed Saw and Paw Patrol with the memable moniker Saw Patrol (describing the unlikely idea of doing a double feature), the weekend’s biggest swing is The Creator, the $80 million sci-fi feature from Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. The film brought in $5.6 million on Friday,...
