In every generation, there is a scream queen–an actress known for starring in horror films who comes to embody the genre landscape of her time. From Janet Leigh and her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Michelle Gellar to Maika Monroe, these women often originate a beloved character or star in a variety of cutting edge films, pushing the boundaries as cinema evolves.
The jury’s still out on which Gen Z actress will ascend to the scream queen throne, but Sydney Sweeney is making a strong case for her legacy. Though not exclusively known for horror, this versatile actress specializes in creating fearsome characters that break the mold set by her predecessors. With her wide eyes and angelic smile, Sweeney has a knack for luring us in with the perception of innocence only to shock us with a cutting remark or withering glare.

It's been over 10 years since "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane made the jump to the big screen with his feature directorial and writing debut "Ted." In the 2012 comedy, Mark Wahlberg played John Bennett, a grown man stuck in a state of arrested development with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis), because he can't stop smoking weed and screwing around with his best friend, a foul-mouthed teddy bear named Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) that he magically wished to life when he was just a boy.
Of course, by the end of the movie, John realizes that he needs to grow up and become a bit more responsible and salvages his relationship with Lori. However, in 2015, "Ted 2" undid their happy ending, revealing that John and Lori got divorced six months prior to the start of the sequel, and the follow-up focused on Ted's battle in court for the right to have...

“Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here.”
While awaiting the sentencing of Danny Masterson on Thursday morning, those words from Judge Charlaine Olmedo broke through mounting courtroom tension. The conviction on two counts of forcible rape left only two possible sentences: 15 years to life or 30 years to life in prison. Masterson’s defense team, Phil Cohen and Shawn Holley, attempted to argue for the lesser sentence emphasizing what the loss of many years could mean for the defendant. Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller turned their argument on its face when he reminded the Judge of what the Jane Does had already lost over the past 20 years, stressing the constant retraumatization that comes with seeking justice as well as the witness’ complete devastation on the stand nearly two decades after being assaulted.

US actor Danny Masterson has been sentenced to serve 30 years to life in prison for raping two women, the media reported. Masterson starred on ‘That 70’s Show’, a TV series that was airing at the time of his crimes in the early 2000s, The BBC reported on Thursday.
Prosecutors argued Masterson, 47, had relied on his status as a prominent Scientologist to avoid accountability.
Judge Charlaine Olmedo allowed the victims of his crimes to read impact statements in court ahead of his sentencing.
Prominent former Scientologist and actress Leah Remini attended Thursday’s sentencing hearing and comforted the women before and after they delivered their statements.
“I wished I had reported him earlier to the police,” one of the women said, according to US media.
Another woman told Masterson: “I forgive you. Your sickness is no longer mine to bear,” according to Reuters.
Masterson remained silent throughout the hearing, The BBC reported.

Eric Weinberg, an Emmy-nominated Hollywood writer and co-executive producer on “Scrubs” and “Californication,” was arrested Thursday on multiple sexual assault charges for rapes dating back to 2012 and possibly much earlier, the LAPD said.
According to an arrest report, Weinberg approached young women in grocery stores, coffee shops and other public places, saying he was a photographer who wanted to set up photo shoots. Once the women came to his Los Feliz residence, he would sexually assault them at some point during the process, police said.
Reps for Weinberg did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday. The report identifies him as a “serial assault suspect” and are asking for additional potential victims to come forward.

Sexual assault charges against David Guillod, the Hollywood producer of films such as “Atomic Blonde” and “Extraction,” have been dismissed by a Santa Barbara judge on Tuesday.
The charges against the producer included an alleged 2012 attack of “Ted” actress Jessica Barth and another incident involving an unnamed waitress from 2018 who claimed she was raped.
But the Santa Barbara district attorney’s office was forced to drop the charges Tuesday after it was unable to show whether the attacks happened within the Da’s jurisdiction. The case will now be referred back to the Los Angeles district attorney’s office.

A judge in Santa Maria, Calif., on Tuesday dismissed a rape case against film producer David Guillod, weeks after another judge threw out most of the charges against him.
Guillod was accused of raping or sexually assaulting six women, including actress Jessica Barth. But after a 10-day preliminary hearing in May, Judge James K. Voysey found that the accusations of four of the women were not credible enough to go to trial.
Voysey took note of text messages in which one alleged victim said, after the alleged rape, that she was looking forward to “dinner and some cuddles” with Guillod. Another alleged victim, Guillod’s assistant, was seen flirting with him and cuddling with him the day after the alleged rape.
“Those behaviors tell the court she didn’t think she was raped the night before,” Voysey said at the hearing on May 23. “She would never have done those things.

David Guillod was ordered to stand trial for sex-assault charges linked to allegations made against the “Atomic Blonde” producer by two women, but a judge determined there was insufficient evidence for charges linked to four others.
Guillod could have faced more than 20 felony charges for assorted crimes against six women, who said they were assaulted or raped while drugged or intoxicated between 2012 and 2020. Charges include rape, kidnapping for rape, and rape of a drugged person.
Two of those cases will go forward. But Santa Maria Superior Court Judge James Voysey on Monday ruled that some of the women’s actions and statements didn’t add up.
In one such case, Voysey cited text messages between Guillod and the accuser corroborating witness testimony that she had cuddled and flirted with him at the 2014 company retreat where she accused him of raping her. “What she said and what she did are very telling,...

David Guillod, a veteran Hollywood producer best known for his involvement with projects such as the Chris Hemsworth-led Extraction and the Charlize Theron-starring Atomic Blonde, has been charged with sexual assault as well as kidnapping.
The producer was taken into custody by Santa Barbara County law enforcement, who apprehended him after he was charged with as many as 11 different sex crimes, some of which date back as far as 2012. All in all, the charges come from three different years: 2012, 2014 and 2015. Specifically, the charges include kidnapping and at least three counts of rape of an unconscious person.
Speaking to reporters over at Variety, a spokesperson for Guillod said the producer denies all the charges made against him and, as reported by CinemaBlend, “looks forward to clearing his name.” Currently held on a $3 million bail, he could face 21 years to life imprisonment if convicted of all charges. Hollywood manager and producer David Guillod — who was charged on Monday with 11 felonies, including rape, kidnapping for rape and rape of a drugged person — remains in custody at the Santa Barbara County Jail as his bail was upped to $3 million, according to the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office.
Jennifer Karapetian, the deputy district attorney who is prosecuting the case, told TheWrap the new bail was the “appropriate amount in this case” but did not explain further why it was increased from $1 million. Guillod’s attorney did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Guillod’s spokesperson told TheWrap earlier on Monday that the producer has “fully cooperated with all aspects of law enforcement’s investigation” and denied the accusations of sexual assault against him. The producer, whose credits include “Extraction” and “Atomic Blonde,” turned himself in to authorities on Monday morning, his attorney told TheWrap.

Exclusive: In the next few minutes, ‘Extraction’ executive producer David Guillod will turn himself in to law enforcement in Santa Barbara to face multiple charges of sexual assault.
The allegations center around three women, who have been identified as Jane Does by District Attorney Joyce Dudley’s office, I’ve learned. At least one of those cases is occurred at a corporate retreat in Santa Barbara in 2014, which is no small part why the over two-year investigation into claims against Guillod was shifted from the L.A. Accompanied by his lawyer Philip Cohen, the former Primary Wave Entertainment co-ceo is surrendering himself at the HQ of the Sheriff’s department of the tourist friendly coastal city. Guillod is expect to post the $1 million bail that the Santa Barbara D.A. has set for him...

On Wednesday morning, sexual assault survivors all over the world sighed a breath of relief after a Manhattan judge declared that former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein — convicted of rape and a forcible sexual act — would be sentenced to 23 years in prison.
Inside the Manhattan courtroom, the group of six women who accused Weinstein of assault and testified during the months-long trial — Miriam Haley, Jessica Mann, Annabella Sciorra, Dawn Dunning, Tarale Wulff, and Lauren Young — embraced one another in tears as they heard that Weinstein would be behind bars for close to the maximum possible sentence. And on the opposite coast, mornings were punctuated by the ping-ping-ping of notifications from survivor group texts containing all-caps messages expressing joy and victory.

Members of the Silence Breakers – a group of women who have spoken out about sexual harassment and abuse that includes several Harvey Weinstein accusers – reacted with shock and elation after the former movie mogul was sentenced to 23 years in prison in a Manhattan courtroom on Wednesday morning.
“This is a historic moment and it’s precedent-setting,” actress and Weinstein accuser Caitlin Dulany told Variety at the “And We Still Rise: Survivors Becoming Empowered” Silence Breakers conference held at the California Endowment in Los Angeles just after the sentence was announced. “23 years seems like justice. I was assaulted by him 22 years ago and I have lived with that ever since.”
Speaking outside court in New York, Weinstein’s lawyer Donna Rotunno said that the defense team is likely to file an appeal in July — a move Dulany told Variety she had expected, but added that the complicated and lengthy process would contribute to Weinstein’s punishment.

Said Mann, who was raped by Weinstein in a New York hotel in 2013, “I have found my voice and hope for a future where monsters no longer hide in our closet.”

The conviction of disgraced Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein for rape and criminal sexual assault sent shockwaves through Hollywood on Monday, with many of the actresses affected giving statements about the verdict. But as one trial ends, the movement presses on and Time’s Up isn’t slowing down.
Time’s Up announced plans for a skill-building and education seminar “by survivors, for survivors” in conjunction with the non-profit group Echo. “Echo 2020 Conference: And Still We Rise! A Celebration of Survivor Resilience and Empowerment” will take place March 11 and 12 in Los Angeles.
The event provides skills and assorted expertise to aid sexual trauma survivors. The stated goal is “to help survivors exercise greater power and control over their own lives and recovery.” One in five women will experience rape in their lifetime and the Echo Conference will include rape and trauma survivors to lead panels and discussion in an effort to aid women affected.

“The Sopranos” actress Annabella Sciorra testified on Thursday that Harvey Weinstein raped her in her Manhattan apartment around 1993 during an emotional and often tearful appearance in a New York courtroom.
“I was punching him, I was kicking him, I was just trying to get him away from me and he took my hands and put my hands over my head to hold me back,” she said on the stand as a witness for the prosecution, getting choked up as she demonstrated where she said he held her hands.
At that point, Sciorra said, Weinstein raped her and then ejaculated onto her leg and nightgown. He then began to perform oral sex on her without her consent, she said, and her body began to react.
“My body shut down,” she said. “It was just so disgusting that my body started to shake in a way that was very unusual. I didn...

More than a year after the New York district attorney’s office arrested and charged Harvey Weinstein for sex crimes, lawyers for the defense and prosecution appeared in court on Wednesday to paint their own picture of Harvey Weinstein.
Wednesday’s proceedings marked the beginning of what has been — and will likely continue to be — a contentious trial lasting several months. After the jury of 12 people and three alternates was sworn in, the prosecution launched into detailed retellings of how Annabella Sciorra, Mimi Haleyi, Jessica Mann, Dawn Dunning, Tarale Wulff, and Lauren Young — the six women expected to testify in the trial — say Weinstein assaulted them. While the prosecution’s charges hinge on the accounts of Haleyi and Mann (who was previously unnamed before Wednesday’s proceedings) the testimonies from the other four women could help the state make the case that Weinstein was a predator.

Jessica Mann, an actress and hairdresser, was named on Wednesday as the second key witness in Harvey Weinstein’s criminal trial.
Up until this point, Mann had remained unnamed in court proceedings and documents. According to prosecutor Meghan Hast’s opening statement, where the prosecution introduced the jury to the women they’d be hearing from, Weinstein raped Mann multiple times in 2013.
In addition, prosecutors named four additional supporting witnesses who have claimed Weinstein sexually assaulted them but whose accusations fall outside the statute of limitations or are not part of the prosecution’s criminal case: “The Sopranos” actress Anabella Sciorra, actress-costume designer Dawn Dunning, model Tarale Wulff and actress-model Lauren Young. They will offer testimony to help the prosecution’s argument that Weinstein is a serial predator.

Actress Jessica Barth, co-founder of Voices in Action, says the women who will testify against Harvey Weinstein in his criminal trial should be seen as heroes, and treated with “kindness” by the media.
“What they’re doing is heroic,” Barth told TheWrap. “They really are changing our culture, no matter what the outcome is.”
At least six women, including actress Annabella Sciorra and former Weinstein production assistant Mimi Haleyi, are expected to testify in the coming weeks. While the trial hinges on the accounts of Haleyi and a still-unnamed woman, testimony from other witnesses like Sciorra are likely to help the prosecution make the case that Weinstein engaged in predatory sexual assault.

A group of Harvey Weinstein’s alleged victims has issued a statement condemning remarks made by his attorney Friday night on ABC’s Nightline.
Weinstein appeared in a Manhattan court Friday for a bail hearing. Prosecutors sought to have his bail increased to $5 million from its current $1 million, arguing he violated his terms by allegedly tampering with an ankle monitor. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to allegations of rape and sexual assault. He’s scheduled for a follow-up hearing on Wednesday.
The ongoing legal battle appears to be taking a toll on Weinstein’s health. He looked haggard upon exiting the court house and had to be supported by two aides to make it into a waiting vehicle. That night, ABC’s Nightline aired a segment featuring Weinstein attorney Donna Rotunno, who maintained that anything her client did was consensual. On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law two key anti-sexual harassment bills that were prominently championed by actresses and #MeToo activists Jessica Barth, Lili Bernard, and Mira Sorvino.
Ab 9, the Stop Harassment and Reporting Extension Act, extends the deadline for victims of workplace sexual harassment, discrimination, or other civil rights-related retaliations to file complaints from one year to three years.
The second bill signed into law, Ab 51, prevents employers from requiring their employees or applicants to waive their rights under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act as a condition of employment. Though the bill doesn’t override anything “otherwise enforceable under the Federal Arbitration Act,” it still protects victims of workplace harassment or other violations who signed forced arbitration clauses that would settle harassment claims in private.

More than 100 women, including Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney, have voiced support for Matthew Modine’s campaign for SAG-AFTRA presidency, following a joke at a SAG-aftra meeting that some decried as misogynist.
With voting set to conclude on Aug. 28, the campaigns have featured vitriolic attacks between supporters of Modine, secretary-treasurer Jane Austin and incumbent president Gabrielle Carteris for several weeks.
The latest incident took place on Aug. 16 at a town hall meeting featuring Austin, Carteris and Modine, organized by the UnionWorking group. During the Q&a portion, Modine responded with a joke when asked why he’s the best choice by saying, “Because I’m the only man running…?”
Modine then explained that he was the only man who had been invited to participate in the town hall. Two other candidates – Abraham Justice and Queen Alljahye Searles – were not invited by the organizers.

The SAG-AFTRA presidential election has heated up with a pointed attack by six women on president Gabrielle Carteris and her handling of the guild’s response to the growing awareness of sexual harassment in the industry.
Allies of Matthew Modine, who has mounted an active challenge to Carteris, issued a detailed recap of her actions since the Harvey Weinstein scandal broke in October, 2017. Rosanna Arquette, Jessica Barth, Caitlin Dulany, Pamela Guest, Sarah Ann Masse, and Sarah Scott each assailed Carteris in a campaign message released Wednesday by Modine’s Membership First faction.

Membership First, the “loyal opposition” at SAG-AFTRA, has unveiled its slate of candidates in the upcoming elections. For the past year, actress Rosanna Arquette has been a leading voice in the #MeToo movement, headlining events, giving interviews and lending her star power to the fight against sexual misconduct in the workplace.
But even though she’s no stranger to accolades, being applauded for her activism by a roaring 1,500 women at the “Power Women Summit” in downtown Los Angeles Friday left her so overwhelmed, she completely blanked out.
“I had a little shutdown,” she told TheWrap almost apologetically. “I kind of went out of my body for minute. I felt really emotional being with the girls.”

NBC News was in October of 2017 where most news outlets want to be: sitting on a juicy scoop. Now its decision to let journalist Ronan Farrow take that exclusive to a rival has developed into a tremendous pain in the rear – and one that isn’t likely to subside.
New scrutiny of the situation sparked last night after Rich McHugh, NBC News’ former supervising producer of investigative reporting, accused top NBC News executives in an interview with The New York Times of trying to block him and Farrow from reporting on sexual harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein. Farrow’s work was eventually printed in The New Yorker and awarded a Pulitzer. Rich McHugh is speaking out against NBC News just a few weeks after leaving the company’s investigative unit. McHugh, a producer for NBC News, worked with Ronan Farrow on the investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual abuse and harassment for an NBC News story, but he says the network effectively killed the investigation.
“At a critical juncture in our reporting on Harvey Weinstein, as we were about to interview a woman with a credible allegation of rape against him, I was told not to do the interview and ordered to stand down, thus effectively killing the story,” McHugh said in the statement to CNN.
McHugh maintains NBC told him to stop the story three days before he was set to interview a credible source. The producer alleges NBC ordered him “not to interview” the woman with rape allegations against Weinstein and “to stand down on the story altogether.

NBC News on Thursday night denied an accusation by a former producer that top executives tried to block Ronan Farrow’s 2017 exposé of Harvey Weinstein, calling the claim “an outright lie.”
“The assertion that NBC News tried to kill the Weinstein story while Ronan Farrow was at NBC News, or even more ludicrously, after he left NBC News, is an outright lie,” read the NBC statement.
Earlier Thursday, Rich McHugh, a producer formerly of the NBC News investigative unit, told the New York Times that people at “the very highest levels of NBC” worked to quash the story at the network.
McHugh said the network was “resistant” during the eight months or so that he and Farrow investigated Weinstein for the story. But in August 2017, when they were set to begin recording the accounts of Weinstein accusers on video, McHugh said the network abruptly pulled support.

NBC News faced similar opprobrium in the fall of 2016 when it was scooped by The Washington Post on the existence of a tape from “Access Hollywood” – a show that is part of NBCUniversal – that depicted a younger Donald Trump making lewd remarks about women and acknowledging he would grab them by their genitals.

Movies about the devil and demonic possession are certainly nothing new. Ever since classics like Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, there have been countless movies made dealing with demons, exorcisms, or the paranormal in general. Some more recent favorites include Insidious, Sinister, and The Conjuring. But then, there are movies like Jason DeVan’s Along Came The Devil, which tries to go toe-to-toe with many other demon possession movies that have come before. Unfortunately, not only does this film take elements from other and much better movies, but it doesn’t offer anything new or use those old ideas in a unique way.
The plot is pretty straightforward, but it can also be somewhat confusing, and I’ll explain why. The movie follows a teen girl named Ashley, played by Sydney Sweeney, whose mother disappeared when she was young and was abused by her father.

The budget may be low, but the level of scares and imagination are lower still in “Along Came the Devil,” a feeble indie horror film that sometimes seems like a straight retread and other times feels like a movie aimed specifically at Christian audiences. Either way, it creaks more than it creeps, to the extent that various scenes appear to be missing from director Jason DeVan’s disjointed debut. Uninspired and increasingly silly, the Atlanta-shot movie will strike most genre fans as overly derivative, while the moderate amount of cursing and gore (however unconvincing) will nevertheless be more than faith-based-entertainment seekers typically find palatable. Gravitas Ventures is giving the picture a limited theatrical launch Aug. 10, simultaneous with on-demand/digital HD release.
Warning bells go off immediately as the film starts with far too much explanatory text, a ham-fisted childhood flashback and the de rigueur claim: “Based on true events”.

To celebrate the film’s recent release courtesy of Gravitas Ventures, DeVan recently participated in a Q&A with Daily Dead, in which he discussed his filmmaking experiences and the inspiration behind Along Came the Devil.
What inspired the idea behind Along Came the Devil?
Jason DeVan: I have always been a huge fan of the original The Exorcist. I really wanted to do a movie in the same vein of that story. So, when close friends of ours gave me the opportunity to tell some of their stories,...
