Greater Noida, July 27 (Ians) Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur on Thursday inaugurated the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships 2023, which is being held in India for the first time.
The international event will see participation of more than 30 Indian weightlifters, including many Khelo India athletes who in the past month alone gave India its best ever performance at the Weightlifting Commonwealth Championships by winning 61 medals in total.
“I am very happy that India is hosting this prestigious event where more than 15 nations from the Asian region, 200 athletes and more than 50 technical staff and coaches are participating. Imphal, July 18 (Ians) Star Indian weightlifter and Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
In a video message, the 27-year-old Olympian said that due to the ethnic conflict in Manipur, many sports persons could not participate in the training camps and children’s studies are also being largely disturbed.
“Huge number of people lost their lives. Houses of many people were burnt. I also have homes in Manipur. Now I am not in the state. I am now in the USA, preparing myself for the World Championship and Asian Games,” she said.
The ace athlete, who was earlier appointed by the Manipur government as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sports, after her performance at the Tokyo Olympics, said that though she is not now in Manipur, but closely observing the everyday affairs of the state.

Jinju (South Korea), May 6 (Ians) India’s Bindyarani Devi clinched a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 a combined lift of 194kg (83kg in snatch and 111kg in clean & jerk), here on Saturday.
The Commonwealth Games 2022 medallist began with a snatch of 80kg. In the second attempt, she registered a lift of 83kg. In the final attempt she lifted 85kg but it was declared a no-lift.
In the clean & jerk, Bindyarani Devi started with a successful lift of 109kg and then went for 111kg in her second attempt. Her third attempt of 115kg was declared a no-lift. The lift of 111kg was enough for the 24-year-old Indian to bag the silver medal in the clean & jerk section as well.

Ghaziabad (Up), Oct 28 (Ians) Maharashtra-based weightlifter Akanksha Vyavahare has created new national records in the 40kg weight category at the Khelo India National Ranking Women’s Weightlifting tournament Phase 2 here on Friday.
The weightlifter, also a part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, has created the NRs in all 3 scores – Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total.
Akanksha bettered her existing Snatch national record, by lifting 60kg. She recorded 71kg in the Clean & Jerk, and on the process, registering a total lift of 131kg. She competed in the 40kg Youth Girls’ category.
Meanwhile, Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu was present during the opening ceremony earlier in the day.
Speaking about the importance of the Khelo India women’s leagues, Mirabai mentioned, “The leagues are very important as many girls are coming across and representing different States and UTs of India. The exposure being provided will very beneficial for all girls in the coming future.

Gandhinagar, Sep 30 (Ians) The women’s 49kg weightlifting competition at the 36th National Games unfolded on expected lines with a tactical battle between Mirabai Chanu and Sanjita Chanu at the Mahatma Mandir here on Friday.
In the end, Mirabai walked away with the gold with a total lift of 191 kgs while Sanjita had to settle for the silver medal with a total lift of 187 kgs. Odisha’s Sneha Soren picked the bronze after totalling 169kg.
In the snatch, Mirabai seized an early advantage by raising the bar to 81kgs in her very first attempt, before a clean effort of 84kg in her second lift gave her a cushion of 3kgs over her statemate Sanjita, who could manage 80kg and 82kgs in her first two attempts.
Sanjita’s third attempt of lifting 84kg was adjudged a foul. Mirabai preferred to save her energy and didn’t turn up for the third attempt.

Cwg 2022 Gold medalist Nikhat Zareen credits her father Mohammad Jameel Ahmed for introducing her to boxing and fighting against the society to help her in the boxing career on the quiz-based reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’, hosted by superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Nikhat said: “More than me, my father deserves all the medals that I have won yet because the society that I belong to does not permit women to play a male-dominated sport. Even after that, earning a name and fame in that sport was a big achievement for me.

Weight-lifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who won gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2022, spoke about her inspirations in life with the host and megastar Amitabh Bachchan on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’. She also shared how her coach in Manipur gave her the strength to pursue her dreams.
She recalls her days of picking up bamboo in forests before her coach in Manipur saw her saw desire to train and gave her first weights to practice with.
