Speaking to Variety ahead of her film’s world premiere at leading European doc fest Cph:dox, Lisa Jackson was keen to emphasize that “Wilfred Buck” is what she calls a “feel-good story” despite addressing dark issues related to Canada’s colonial past.
Written and directed by Jackson (“Biidaaban: First Light”), the film is a hybrid doc that follows the extraordinary life story of the eponymous charismatic science facilitator, an expert in Indigenous lore about astronomy, who overcame a harrowing history of displacement, racism and addiction by reclaiming ancestral star knowledge and ceremony.
Buck, who dropped out of school as a teenager, went back to complete his education as an adult and has two degrees from the University of Manitoba. He has dedicated 25 years to teaching students, from kindergarten to university level, through lectures and planetarium presentations.

New Delhi, April 15 (Ians) Apple has announced to use 100 per cent recycled cobalt in all company-designed batteries by 2025.
Additionally, magnets in Apple devices will use entirely recycled rare earth elements by 2025, and all Apple-designed printed circuit boards will use 100 per cent recycled tin soldering and 100 per cent recycled gold plating.

Solution-based thinking was the name of the game on the second day of the annual Environmental Media Association Impact Summit, which featured sessions filled with searing insights and new ideas in the battle against climate change and environmental inequity.
First up was The Hollywood Reporter’s deputy editor Degen Pener, in conversation with Mustafa Santiago Ali, executive vice president of conservation and justice for the National Wildlife Federation. Titled “How Should the Media Discuss Eco-Disasters Such as The Norfolk Southern Train Derailment?” the talk touched on the importance of community-led change.
“Communities speak for themselves. Communities will let you know what they need,” said Ali, who was recently on the ground in East Palestine, Ohio, after a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed there on Feb. 3.
Though heartened by the increased coverage of eco-disasters by journalists, Ali encouraged media companies to be more transparent about the sources of their ad revenue.

Lisa Jackson’s hybrid documentary feature project “Wilfred Buck,” which centers on the eponymous science facilitator, an expert in Indigenous lore about astronomy, won the Canadian Forum Pitch Prize at Hot Docs last week. Jackson tells Variety how she came to the project.
Jackson – whose mother was Anishinaabe, an Indigenous group in North America – was at a conference in November 2017 when she first heard about Wilfred Buck, who had curated an exhibit at the Canada Science and Technology Museum based on the stories about the stars told by First Nations communities. As well as being an educator, Buck is an elder and ceremonial leader for the Cree, one of Canada’s largest First Nations groups.
When she heard about Buck’s work, Jackson had what she describes as a “zap” – an urgent realization that “someone has to make a film on this man,” she recalls.

Apple on Thursday committed $100 million to what CEO Tim Cook called “the unfinished work of racial justice and equality.”
YouTube announced a $100 investment today as well to amplify black voices, and Sony Pictures unveiled the Sony Pictures Action initiative. They are the latest media, entertainment and tech companies shocked into action by the police killing of George Floyd two weeks ago and the ongoing wave of protest across the nation since.
Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative will work “to challenge the systemic barriers to opportunity and dignity that exist for communities of color and particularly for the black community,” focusing on education, economic equality and criminal justice reform, said Cook in video posted on Twitter.
The executive, who has a Southern twang, described growing up in Alabama during the Civil Rights movement. “I saw firsthand that the only thing that made lasting and durable change was people of...

Perhaps the most innovative virtual reality work I’ve seen this year has been Lisa Jackson’s Biidaaban: First Light, which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival. Jackson, an Anishinaabe artist working out of the National Film Board of Canada, has spent years exploring issues of First People identity and language in her work, which includes documentary and fiction film, animation, installations, and other media; in fact, Biidaaban: First Light was designed as a corollary to a multimedia installation. The film’s narrative is minimal. It could be described as a post-apocalyptic scenario in which the viewer witnesses how nature has reclaimed […]...

I wasn’t a fan of Green Wing, the semi-improved comedy based on scripts that were a hodgepodge of jokes, sketches and sight gags gathered from a hive-mind of writers. It was an interesting way to produce a single-camera sitcom, and one that clearly found an audience, but I found its scattergun approach quite tiring. Many of Green Wing‘s writers are behind Channel 4′s new comedy offering Campus, which won’t escape “Green Wing in a university” branding, because that’s exactly what it is. The uni’s motto is even “with wings”.
“Publication, Publication, Publication” was a 70-minute extension of the half-hour Comedy Showcase pilot from 2009 (including adverts), which basically means there was an awful lot of filler. But this filler is exactly what Campus thrives on, as it’s really just an extended sequence of sketches and non sequiturs. Jonty De Wolfe (Andy Nyman) is the...
