Former Deep Purple singer-bassist Glenn Hughes has confirmed that Eddie Van Halen nearly asked him to front Van Halen in the 1980s.
Around the same Hughes was recording vocals for the Black Sabbath album Seventh Star, David Lee Roth exited Van Halen in 1985 to pursue a solo career, leaving a gaping hole in one of the most popular rock acts of the era. Hughes — a good friend of Eddie Van Halen and a free agent — appeared as a prime candidate.
Hughes reflected on his hypothetical Van Halen membership in a new interview with The Classic Rock Podcast.
“Well, Eddie was newly sober at that time… And we spoke about it,” Hughes said of the possibility of joining Van Halen [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “I had no idea. Eddie had been a friend of mine from the beginning.”
He added, “Look… Would it have worked? I’m not sure. Unless I was completely sober — and...

Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their complete stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list. This edition features bassist Rudy Sarzo.
If Rudy Sarzo had done nothing more with his career than play bass on Quiet Riot’s Metal Health, he’d be a heavy-metal icon.

Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Until they met Oscar Isaac, the Coen Brothers were pretty sure that their tragicomic Inside Llewyn Davis screenplay was unfilmable: Where would they find a crazy-talented singer-guitarist with movie-star presence and major comic acting chops? Isaac, a 33-year-old lifelong rock musician and Juilliard-trained actor who had a Miller's Crossing poster on his wall as a teen in Florida, saw his chance. "I heard they were making it," he says, "and was like, 'This is me, man!'" Thinner, with close-cropped hair and light stubble instead of Llewyn's beatnik beard, Isaac...

If you want to know about contemporary British jazz or prog, you go to Downtown Music Gallery, where between them Bruce Gallanter and Manny Maris are an encyclopedic repository of knowledge and infallible taste. So when on my most recent trip there, Bruce passed me a sampler called Who Is Phil Gibbs? and told me the titular guitarist would be playing a series of shows in NYC (including his USA debut), I played said disc as soon as I got home, and was immediately intrigued.
In its listing, Tony calls Phil Gibbs "a staunch free-improviser" and goes on to compare him to Derek Bailey, but that's just one facet of his multi-stylistic habits. Drawing from a variety of contexts, with recording dates ranging from 2000 to this year, the CD's eight tracks reveal a far more versatile musician than Tony suggests.

Reuters Jim Marshall, builder of amplifiers, poses with one of his products at the ‘Musikmesse’ in Frankfurt in March, 2002.
Jim Marshall, the inventor who changed the sound of rock music, has died at age 88, according to a statement issued by the company that bears his name.
A drummer by trade, in the early ‘60s Marshall invented what became known as the Marshall Jtm 45 guitar amplifier, seen by many guitarists as an improvement over the then-state-the-art Fender Bassman. In subsequent years,...

Dave Grohl drew a lot of attention with his acceptance speech/rant for Best Rock Performance at the Grammys on Sunday, with many (us included) noting the subtle swipe at electronic dance music. Now, Grohl is back with a second rant to clarify the real meaning behind what he said with a public statement.
Here we go!
Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! Seacrest! Where do I begin?? Chillin' with Lil' Wayne...meeting Cyndi Lauper's adorable mother...the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet.....much too much to recap. It's really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there's one thing that I remember Very clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance...and then saying this: "To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important.

On Grammy night, Foo Fighter frontman Dave Grohl made his distaste for computer-assisted music clear. Or so we thought. Now, in a new statement, Grohl heartily apologizes for giving the impression that he's not a fan of electronica, hip-hop and basically anyone else who might have been offended.
Here's what Grohl said last Sunday (Feb. 12):
"To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what's important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that's the most important thing for people to do... It's not about being perfect, it's not about sounding absolutely correct, it's not about what goes on in a computer. It's about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head]."
In a statement released Friday, Grohl softens his stance, basically saying that he was thinking on his...

'Never has a 33-second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage,' Grohl writes on the Foo Fighters' Facebook page.

Midway through his Mvp-like performance at Sunday's 54th Grammy Awards — a tour de force that included wearing a Slayer T-shirt, engaging in a lengthy guitar duel with Bruce Springsteen and inadvertently standing in Paul McCartney's spotlight for, like, 45 seconds — Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl strode to the stage to deliver a delightfully long-running acceptance speech, one that some thought took a few none-too-subtle jabs at the burgeoning Edm movement.
Surrounded by his bandmates and Wasting Light producer Butch Vig, Grohl held the band's Best Rock Performance award and spoke about the back-to-basics approach the Foos employed while making the album, which included eschewing computers and recording directly to 2-inch tape, saying in part:

Rolling Stone has just unveiled its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and, of course, what exactly the word "greatest" implies will be up for debate. The technical-mastery camp, who swear by the digital dexterity of Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and the like, will be disappointed, but it's hard to argue with most on the list, considering they were chosen by a group of voters comprised of Rolling Stone editors and legendary guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen, Joe Walsh, Robby Krieger, Alex Lifeson, Robbie Robertson, and many more. No surprise with the overall greatest axman in the history of the universe. Even a drunk, tone-deaf monkey could have guessed that Jimi Hendrix would be the guy. As Tom Morello puts it, Hendrix's riffs "were a pre-metal funk bulldozer, and his lead lines were an electric LSD trip down to [...]...

When the music game craze started taking hold a few years back, I was tough to sell on it. As a guitarist since '92, I wasn't very keen on a new generation thinking of plastic guitars instead of real instruments. Yes, I was one of those people that called "for shame!" on Guitar Hero, and turned a blind eye to the series.
Then Rock Band came along, and by some fluke my wife and I attended a party where the game was present, just a week after it's release. A few hours later, I was obsessed with playing drums on Rb, and my outlook began to quickly change.
That Christmas I received the full-blown Rock Band set and a year later I found myself purchasing Rock Band 2. Hundreds of dollars in Dlc later, I'm still banging the plastic drums, and always craving new tunes.
So last week when Harmonix asked...
