Very few, if any, actors have sprinted out of the blocks like Jena Malone.
After debuting in a Michael Jackson music video, the Nevada native starred in directorial debuts for Anjelica Huston and Goldie Hawn, shared the screen with Jeff Bridges and Frances McDormand, played a young Jodie Foster, got caught between Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon, did a period piece with Glenn Close, got weird with Jake Gyllenhaal in a cult classic, played a ferry girl for Anthony Minghella, charmed an emo Hayden Christensen, snagged an ensemble part in a starry indie with Don Cheadle, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, and tested the convictions of Emile Hirsch and Kieran Culkin.
And she did it all by her 18th birthday.

"You are sane, approximately." "Sane as you are." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Adopting Audrey (formerly known as Porcupine at its festival premiere), an awkward sort of dramedy from filmmaker M. Cahill. Not to be confused with the other Mike Cahill this Mike Cahill now goes by M Cahill, and directed the indie hit King of California with Michael Douglas back in 2007. This is only his second feature film. Jena Malone stars as Audrey, an "adult woman" who puts herself up for adoption and forms a bond with the misanthropic patriarch of her adoptive family. Based on a true story. The cast also features Robert Hunger-Bühler, Brooke Bloom, Will Rogers, and Emily Kuroda. This actually looks like a nice, sweet little indie flick. Malone looks like Evan Rachel Wood or even Andrea Riseborough in this; I love her style with the short hair and quirky attitude.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is not getting an encore on Prime Video.
Deadline broke the news late Friday that the streaming service has canceled the YA horror series after just one season.
News of the cancellation is somewhat surprising.
The show garnered mixed reviews, but there was a decent amount of buzz, which typically translates to viewership.
However, the streaming service never releases raw viewership statistics, so really any show can be canceled at any time.
The good news for fans is that the central mystery was pretty much closed up at the end of I Know What You Did Last Summer Season 1.
Written and executive produced by Sara Goodman, I Know What You Did Last Summer is based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, which was also the basis of the iconic 1997 film.

The timing is ripe for an all-new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” to be revived: The 1997 film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Philippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was a contemporary piece with the original Neve Campbell-led “Scream,” which is soon returning with a much-hyped new sequel-slash-reboot movie, and slasher pop culture is now at a perfect millennial nostalgia touchpoint. However, unlike January’s upcoming “Scream,” Amazon’s eight-episode “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series isn’t also a continuation of the original series (including the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”), despite the recent passing of the torch from the original cast. Instead, writer and executive producer Sara Goodman has created a whole other loose adaptation of the 1973 Lois Duncan novel of the same name.

The cast of Amazon’s upcoming horror series I Know What you Did Last Summer got a pleasant surprise during the series’ New York Comic Con panel Friday as the stars of the original 1997 film dropped by for some quick “fan questions.”
While appearances by Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Jennifer Love Hewitt were pleasant surprises for the Nycc audience, their words of encouragement and excitement meant more for the talent and creative team of the upcoming show.
“It feels like they’ve given us their blessing; that’s hugely meaningful to me and to all of us,” said showrunner Sarah Goodman. “The last thing we want to do is undermine what they’ve created. We moved to the next generation with full respect to the movie and to the actors that are in it.”
Set to debut October 15, the YA horror series is a modern take on the 1997 slasher.

Buchwald has signed filmmaker Jaclyn Bethany, who recently made her feature directorial debut with Indigo Valley, a suspenseful drama she also wrote and stars in alongside Rosie Day (Outlander) and Brandon Sklenar (Vice).
Based on Bethany’s short film of the same name, the pic is about a newlywed couple who, while on a hiking trip in the wilderness, unexpectedly joined by the woman’s estranged actress sister who is fresh out of rehab. Giant Pictures will release the indie nationwide on September 8.
Bethany is currently in post-production for her sophomore feature Highway One, inspired by Anton Chekhov’s pay, Ivanov, and is working on her third drama, the pandemic-inspired Before the World Set on Fire which stars Brooke Bloom, Joe Adler, Alex Breaux, David Call, and Eve Connolly.
On the big screen, Bethany will next be seen in David Fincher’s Mank and the British indie Venice at Dawn from director Jamie Adams.

Director Jaclyn Bethany hasn't let coronavirus quarantine orders and strict on-set safety protocols get in the way of starting production on her third movie, Before the World Set on Fire, toplined by Brooke Bloom and Minyan star Samuel Levine.

“The Surrogate” is the kind of movie you’d expect to be based on a stage play, because it is so entirely driven by well-honed dialogue arguing social issues from nicely detailed if schematically conceived character viewpoints — like something by Donald Margulies, Rebecca Gilman or the pseudononymous Jane Martin. That writer-director Jeremy Hersh’s debut feature is a screen original surprises, not because it’s “stagy” (though he has written plays), but because .
This indie drama about a young African American woman who agrees to become pregnant for her gay interracial-couple best friends, and the fallout when that arrangement unravels, touches vividly on numerous hot ethical and identity-politics topics without sermonizing in any direction. It’s an engrossing, very well-acted tale that will need viewer word of mouth to get the audience this “virtual theater” release deserves, given a lack of marquee names behind or before the camera.

Jess would like everyone to be comfortable. That means everyone, from her distant boss who doesn’t seem eager to develop Jess’s passion projects to the well-meaning waitress who casually tosses off a comment that’s perhaps not exactly racist, but certainly rooted in prejudiced thinking. She’d like her mother, whipsmart but not always aware of the weight of her words, to be comfortable. She’d like her ex-boyfriend, eager to please but not receptive to Jess’s wishes, to be comfortable. Her best friends, who have asked Jess to serve as a surrogate to their baby, she’d definitely like them to be comfortable, too. Jess? Her comfort comes second to everyone else, hell, maybe even third.
In Jeremy Hersh’s smart moral drama “The Surrogate,” Jess’s bent towards accommodating others is pushed into extreme perimeters, but the microbudget feature never wavers from lived-in believability. As Jess,...
