Showrunners are the creative visionaries of a series.
They might not be the original creators, but they cover all aspects of the creative elements, evolve the show's vision, and decide where the story and character arcs will go.
They run the writing rooms, head the development, hire writers, and ensure actors are kept happy and that the budget is not exceeded.
Series are usually a collective effort, with writers giving their thoughts, but showrunners have the final say and are essential.
Where would the industry be without people like Shonda Rhimes, Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things), and Ryan Murphy?
It would be mundane and repetitive.
Intelligent and prolific showrunners are the difference between a hit and a flop.
They set an unwavering tone for their ideas, and consistency is vital.
If the reason you fell in love with a series is altered or gone one day, then the connection created is absent,...

With our multiple-article celebration, we'll look at several aspects of the beloved sitcom, including how closely it related to its partner, The Office, despite having two distinct perspectives.
The Office and Parks and Recreation often run together in the minds of sitcom fans of a particular era. Both shows aired on NBC and overlapped for many of the same years.
Both were in the mockumentary genre, and both shows achieved popularity and award attention. Both had a second life in the early days of binge-streaming when new audiences discovered them.
Both were set in workplaces, and both were put in a smallish city in which the universe of characters sprawled continuously over the run of the show.

As viewers, we witnessed a story that was as much about...

It is a cruel, unfair twist of fate that we lost the amazing and talented Andre Braugher this week at the age of 61. Though Braugher appeared in notable film roles over the course of a handful of decades, like his debut role of Corporal Thomas Searles in Edward Zwick's "Glory," Brent Norton in Frank Darabont's adaptation of "The Mist," and real-life journalist and editor Dean Baquet in the recent "She Said," he was best known on the small screen for primarily playing men of authority, like his Emmy-winning turn as Detective Frank Pembleton of the Baltimore Pd on "Homicide: Life on the Street." For many viewers, Braugher is best known for playing another commanding cop, Captain Raymond Holt of the NYPD in the brilliantly silly eight-season sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Both when it aired initially, and through binge-rewatches, it's clear that Braugher successfully balanced the serious and the loopy in his performance as Holt,...

Andre Braugher’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars are among those honoring the actor after news of his death broke on Tuesday.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” wrote Terry Crews, who co-starred on all eight B99 seasons as Sgt. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship.

Andre Braugher, who starred in the laugh-out-loud television series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street, passed away on Monday. He was 61.
Braugher’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the news of his passing to Variety.
Andre Braugher shined as Captain Raymond Holt on the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. By far, my favorite character in the series, Braugher’s performance as the stoic and sinisterly sassy Captain Holt is the stuff of legend. Alongside his co-stars, Braugher helped lead the series from 2013 until 2021. Not typically known for his comedic chops before landing the role of Captain Holt, Braugher left his comfort zone in the rearview to surprise everyone with an unforgettable and consistently hilarious performance.
A Chicago native, Braugher excelled at playing cops with integrity on television. He began his career playing a detective opposite Telly Savalas in a string of Kojak telefilms. Before long, he landed a pivotal role in Glory,...

One of the best reasons to watch "The Twilight Zone" even 60 years later is that you get to see just how much each episode had an effect on pop culture. Half the episodes will make you go, "Oh, so that's what that 'Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror sketch was making fun of," or "Oh, so that's where that 'Black Mirror' episode got that idea from." Although not all of these episodes were original themselves, they still brought the source material they were based on to a national audience. Not only did the show start off with a large viewership, but constant re-runs have helped the series stay relevant for years afterward. The result is that this show constantly turns out to be a source of inspiration for so many of the best speculative TV shows and movies we have today.

It was a criminally good day for comedy on September 17, 2013, when Brooklyn Nine-Nine hit our TV screens. Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, the Golden Globe-winning series followed the cops and employees at a fictional NYPD precinct. With their roles on the show, Andy Samberg and Terry Crews added another title to their comedy resumés, Andre Braugher showed off his funny side after years on TV dramas, and Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, and Chelsea Peretti gave breakout performances. Though it was never a ratings hit, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was so adored that NBC ordered another three seasons of the show after Fox canceled it in 2018. And the clips below are all the evidence you need. Here are the 10 most-watched videos from Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s YouTube channel. 10. The thing about “open secrets” is: Everyone knows what the secret is, but no one wants to acknowledge or talk about it. Not really, at least — if somebody’s peers and colleagues are all privy to some forbidden or socially unacceptable facts, and bringing it up forces them to reckon with some complicated feelings, then hey, why do we need to bring any of that up? For years, it was more or less an open secret within the comedy community that Louis C.K. had done things and said things that made female comedians feel uncomfortable.

The cast of Parks and Recreation reunited on the picket line as the stars and crew members came together to fight for a better contract with the studios.
Amid the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the cast of the NBC sitcom was seen outside the Amazon Studios in Culver City.
The picketers on the scene included Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Nick Offerman, Retta, Jim O’Heir, Ben Schwartz, Alison Becker, Kirk Fox, Joe Mande, Susan Yeagley, Allan McLeod and Colton Dunn.
Alongside the Parks and Recreation stars, Li’l Sebastian, Pawnee’s famous miniature horse, also made an appearance.

Considering the four year gap between seasons 1 and 2 of "Good Omens," it's easy to see why some fans are frustrated by the season 2 finale. After two seasons of slowly building up to a romance between its two leads, "Chapter 6: Every Day" chooses to split them apart, seemingly for good. Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) decides to take up the fancy new job as Archangel, and Crowley (David Tennant) refuses to go with him and reclaim his old status as an angel. It's a dark end to a season that otherwise seemed to be building up to a happy finale.
Luckily, Neil Gaiman and the other writers involved already have plans for a third season, one that'll presumably bring our two favorite supernatural beings back together. "Season 3 is all planned and plotted and, if I get to make it, will take the story to a satisfying end. If I wasn't on strike I'd be writing it currently,...

As you traverse the crowded streaming landscape, you may just have forgotten about good old Netflix. If, like me, you've lapped up pretty much everything Hollywood has tossed to us streaming peasants, you might be more tempted to see what's up with the newly launched Max service, or what movies Universal has prematurely yanked from theaters and added to Peacock.
But just because Netflix might have lost some of its appeal (and a ton of subscribers) amid the intense cascade of streaming offerings, that doesn't mean it should be overlooked. In fact, the Og streamer is gearing up to ensure you never leave the house this Summer, with a bewildering array of entertainment that no single human could possibly imbibe in its entirety. Which is the least they can do considering they're going to start charging you to share your password.

As the Writers Guild strike stretches into its fourth week, Michael Schur is feeling resolute.
Well known for co-creating such hit series as Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, Schur is a member of the WGA Negotiating Committee headed up by Chief Negotiator Ellen Stutzman and Co-Chairs David A. Goodman and Chris Keyser, which at the beginning of May led the writers’ walkout on film and TV production, as negotiations with the AMPTP over everything from guild minimums and residuals to AI broke down.
Schur came up under Greg Daniels on The Office after launching his career at SNL, having been given the opportunity to experience firsthand all the nuts and bolts that go into producing quality television, something that can’t be said for many aiming to rise through the ranks today.

Exclusive (Updated with Jen Statsky’s comments): Filming on Season 3 of HBO Max/Universal TV hit comedy series Hacks, starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, has been halted due of the writers strike, Deadline has learned. According to sources, production will be on pause for the duration of the work stoppage.
It is hard for any scripted series to shoot without writing showrunners on set. This is especially true for Hacks as writing is at the heart of the show — it centers on an aging comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an up-and-coming writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) who are writing together. Hacks was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who serve as showrunners. According to WGA rules, members cannot provide any writing services, including script revisions during filming, while a strike is going on.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

This May, TV is sure to be a grand affair, as Netflix cordially invites Bridgerton fans to witness the rise (and courtship) of Queen Charlotte, while Hulu heads back to Russia for more of the gorgeous pageantry of The Great. We can look forward to just as many thrills (if fewer "huzzah"s) in present-day stories, thanks to the dynamic duos of Heléne York and Drew Tarver, who return in The Other Two Season 3, and Patricia Arquette and Ben Stiller, who have reteamed for Apple TV+'s High Desert. Also on the horizon: a To All the Boys spinoff, a new comedy from Shea Serrano and Michael Schur, and the dazzling debut of Disney+'s latest high-profile adaptation American Born Chinese.
There's an abundance of options (as usual), but we've narrowed things down by picking 12 of the most exciting TV premieres of May 2023.
