Spoiler Alert: Major plot points from tonight’s series finale of Magnum P.I. can be found below.
NBC’s Magnum P.I. said goodbye tonight and series star Jay Hernandez is opening up about how he feels about the ending and whether or not there are talks of continuing the story.
“I actually floated the idea of a standalone film. I suppose it’s still possible. If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did,” Hernandez told a fan via Twitter who said they’d have liked to have seen the show continue.
He added, “That being said, to all the #magnum #ohana thank you for always supporting us! Y’all have been Amazing. We’re humbled by your dedication…”

Magnum Pi is ending its run on NBC next week, and two cast members recently spoke about ending the reboot series. Showrunner Eric Guggenheim promised viewers earlier this year that the series would not end on a cliffhanger.
Starring Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang, the series is a reboot of the 1980s series and follows a private investigator, Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), and his friends as they solve crimes in Hawaii.

Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is ready to drive his convertible into the Hawaii sunset. Magnum P.I.will conclude with a two-hour episode in less than a month’s time. According to TVLine, the double-length series finale will air on NBC on Wednesday, January 3, from 9/8c to 11/10c. Magnum P.I.fans learned in July that the action drama — a reboot of Tom Selleck’s 1980s-era TV show of the same name — would end with its fifth season. NBC In better news for fans, the Season 5 finale works as a series finale, as showrunner Eric Guggenheim told TV Insider in October. “There are certainly a couple of loose ends that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but there’s no major cliffhanger. No one gets shot or blown up. So I do think the finale works as a ...

We now know when Magnum P.I. will officially end. A promo released this week revealed the drama series will return from its holiday break on January 3, and we’ve learned it will conclude with a two-episode series finale from 9-11 pm.
As we reported in June, NBC opted not to order additional episodes beyond the 20-episode fifth season picked up last year.

There are only a few episodes left of Magnum P.I., and after Zachary Knighton stepped behind the camera for last week’s, it’s Perdita Weeks‘ turn as director with the December 13 “Extracurricular Activities.” “Honestly, I would’ve taken any episode,” Weeks tells TV Insider. “I just got really lucky. It was written also by my favorite writer that we had on the team, Katie Varney, and we got on really well. I knew that we would — [we’re a] similar age — and I really, really enjoyed working with her. It was Eric Guggenheim’s idea, I imagine, to pair us up. It was just really, really fun. It was actually quite collaborative because there was a large sequence in it, which we kind of devised together because we weren’t sure what was going to be available on the day that wasn’t on the page at the beginning. Magnum P.I. fans have seen their show saved once before; it aired four seasons on CBS before being canceled, then NBC picked it up for 20 more episodes. Now, however, we’re in the final stretch of 10 episodes, airing Wednesdays. When the fourth season ended, viewers needed more: Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) finally addressed their feelings for one another and kissed. So how will fans feel at the end of Season 5 and what is, at least at this point, set to be the series finale? “There are certainly a couple of loose ends that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but there’s no major cliffhanger. No one gets shot or blown up. So I do think the finale works as a series finale,” showrunner Eric Guggenheim tells TV Insider. “Is it how I would’ve chosen to end the series? No, but I do think it works.

Magnum P.I. fans are some of the most patient out there.
The fans went into overdrive in 2022 when CBS canceled the beloved drama after four seasons.
They made their voices heard and got their show saved.
It's just a shame that, one year later, the series has been canceled again.
The good news is that the fans are resilient and are again devoted to getting their favorite show an additional season.
If the upcoming back half of Magnum P.I. Season 5 does turn out to be the final-ever episodes, we won't be left with a big cliffhanger.
Cliffhangers on broadcast TV shows keep us talking over the summer until fresh episodes are made available.
They usually leave us with plenty of talking points about how they will affect the following season.
Magnum P.I. showrunner Eric Guggenheim has revealed to TV Line that Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 20 is "quite satisfying."

Magnum P.I. showrunner Eric Guggenheim didn’t intend on the action drama’s Season 5 finale being the series finale, but then NBC canceled the series after one post-CBS season. Luckily for fans, the Season 5 finale “absolutely works” as the final Magnum P.I. installment, Guggenheim says. “I actually think it’s quite satisfying. I’m really proud of the finale,” he tells TVLine. “There are a couple of threads left dangling that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but I didn’t want to end on a cliffhanger. If I’m being honest, I guess I wanted to play it safe. Too many shows have gotten burned with cliffhangers [left unresolved].” Zack Dougan/NBC Magnum P.I. — an update of Tom Selleck’s similarly-titled ’80s show, Magnum, P.I. — stars Jay Hernandez as an ex-Navy Seal working as a security consultant and private eye in Hawaii. Magnum P.I. is ending its run on NBC with Season 5 Part 2 and fans of the show have been wondering if the series would have a proper sendoff.
Many shows that get canceled don’t get to give closure to the characters on screen and viewers are left with unanswered questions when the series ends with a huge cliffhanger.
Luckily, the showrunner Eric Guggenheim had enough foresight to give loyal viewers enough closure and not leave things with a cliffhanger that would leave fans clueless as to what happened next.

Magnum P.I.’s Season 5 finale “absolutely works” as a series finale, despite not being planned as one, showrunner Eric Guggenheim tells TVLine. As such, he sees no need to make edits or go so far as to shoot new scenes to put a tidier bow on the cancelled island drama.

Magnum P.I. has returned for the second half of its fifth (and last) season, and it kicked off with an episode that featured a major moment for central couple Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks), plus possibilities for Tc (Stephen Hill) and Rick (Zachary Knighton). Higgins thought she might be pregnant in the midseason premiere, but by the end of it, she had confirmation she wasn’t. Still, Magnum said “I love you” first, and she returned the sentiment. “The ‘I love you’s were a big step for both of them given their romantic histories. Both have obviously been hurt. Magnum P.I. has run out of gas (again).
The Jay Hernandez-led reboot of the 1980s procedural will wrap its run with its upcoming 10 episodes on NBC. The news comes as the options on the cast were due to expire June 30, forcing NBC — whose studio sibling Universal TV co-produces the series alongside CBS Studios — to make a decision on either extending those deals or wrapping up the show. The network, which has recently passed on a number of pilots and canceled nearly all of its bubble shows, opted to let the show conclude with its remaining 10 episodes rather than to spend the money to extend the show’s stars as it’s unclear when production will resume amid the ongoing Writers Guild strike.

“Magnum P.I.” is coming to a close at NBC. The drama series, which was canceled by CBS last year before NBC picked it up, will not continue past the upcoming second part of Season 5.
The decision not to order a sixth season comes past the 50-day mark of the WGA strike and a potential strike by SAG-AFTRA after the actors union’s contract with the AMPTP expires on June 30. That date coincides with the end of the “Magnum P.I.” cast’s deals at NBC. Therefore, to avoid cancelling the show, NBC would have had to either order more episodes without knowing when they could enter production or extend the actors’ deals to prolong the decision-making period. Ultimately, opted to release the actors and move forward without “Magnum P.I.” on its slate.
“Magnum P.I.” was a reboot of the 1980s series of the same name that starred Tom Selleck in the title role.

Exclusive: Magnum P.I.‘s reprieve at NBC is coming to an end. The network has opted not to order additional episodes beyond the 20-episode fifth season picked up last year.

After a kayaking workout in the sparkling blue waters off Oahu, Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) steps into a steamy shower. The private detective isn’t alone for long. “Hey,” he says. “Hey yourself,” purrs his business partner Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) before a passionate embrace. Diehard fans know this is typically when someone wakes from a dream or snaps out of a fantasy. Wrong. After four seasons of flirting and longing looks, Magnum and Higgy — “Miggy” — are a couple! “The show starts off with a bang,” says Weeks, laughing along with Hernandez as they sit down with TV Guide Magazine. It’s also no dream that we’re still talking about the show. The reboot of Tom Selleck’s 1980–88 action hit was canceled last year after four successful seasons on CBS. “The ratings were good, the audience was loyal. It was quite a surprise,” says executive producer Eric Guggenheim, who fought to keep Magnum alive.

Magnum P.I. was saved last summer by NBC after it was cancelled by CBS.
The procedural will now be “sexier” in its new home, according to its stars and showrunner, as characters Thomas Magnum, played by Jay Hernandez, and Juliet Higgins, played by Perdita Weeks, getting together and starting a romantic relationship.
While Magnum and Higgins have had the classic ‘will they, won’t they’ since season one and shared a kiss at the end of season four, season five kicks off with a steamy shower scene and a Baywatch-style romp.

When last we tuned into the Hawaii-based drama, Juliet (played by Perdita Weeks) had ‘fessed up her feeeelings to Thomas (Jay Hernandez), after which the partners in crimesolving shared a passionate kiss against a perfect sunset. Forty-nine days after CBS surprisingly axed “Magnum P.I.,” NBC signed a lease agreement for Thomas Magnum’s shiny, red Ferrari. Ok, so, the Comcast-owned broadcast network is actually getting the whole show under a two-year, 20-episode deal — but it’s a pretty cool car.
NBC’s iteration of “Magnum P.I.” is expected to begin production this fall and air in 2023, a person with knowledge of the plans told IndieWire. If that feels like a fast turnaround, it’s got nothing on the Le Mans-like speed with which the salvation talks began. Discussions about NBC picking up the show began “immediately” after CBS’ cancellation, the person told us, citing the “pretty loud” fan outcry and subsequent media coverage of the grass roots campaigning as two material reasons the show was saved.

Magnum P.I. has been saved! NBC has ordered 20 new episodes of the Jay Hernandez-starring drama after CBS canceled the series last month. According to Deadline, the 20 episodes will be divided into two seasons, bringing the reboot’s run to 96 episodes, with an option for more. The clock was running out on the action drama, with CBS Studios, which co-produces the series with Universal TV, not extending the options on the cast, which were set to expire at the end of Thursday, June 30. Exclusive: Magnum P.I. has been saved. It came down to the wire but a deal just closed for NBC to order 20 new episodes of the action drama starring Jay Hernandez following its cancellation by CBS last month, I have learned. I hear the 20 episodes will be split into two seasons, bringing the reboot’s run to 96 episodes, with an option for more.
In anticipation of the deal closing, CBS Studios, which co-produces the series with Universal TV, did not extend the options on the cast which expire at the end of day today, June 30, ahead of time, so the final stage of the negotiations stretched into the night tonight. With an agreement on the order reached, the cast is now being picked up and finalizing deals to return for the new seasons.
Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill star alongside Hernandez in the series.

Exclusive: Magnum P.I. is looking to join an elite group of popular broadcast series that have overcome shocking cancellations to continue their runs. No one is commenting, but I hear talks are underway for NBC and/or USA Network to potentially carry the series starring Jay Hernandez.
An arrangement still is being figured out, but I hear one scenario is for new episodes to air on NBC while USA would run previous seasons of the action drama, a reboot of the 1980s series that starred Tom Selleck.

CBS is not proceeding with a fifth season of Magnum P.I. With Bull announcing in January that its current sixth season will be its last, Magnum P.I. is the most established CBS series to be canceled this season. As a Top 25 show in total viewers, it also may be the most watched broadcast series to get the axe this upfront season.
A reboot of the 1980s drama, which starred Tom Selleck, the new Magnum P.I. was headlined by Jay Hernandez and was a rare broadcast drama with a Latino lead. Its cancellation came after lengthy and complex talks between CBS and lead studio Universal Television, which also is behind CBS’ FBI franchise and The Equalizer. Following tough negotiations, the other four series, which are among CBS’ top ratings performers, received multi-season renewals.

This week on CBS’ Magnum P.I., Thomas gets an unexpected blast from the past when Nuzo, his dearly departed Buds bud, is posthumously implicated in a murder.
For Magnum, this represents an opportunity for redemption, seeing as he couldn’t save Nuzo’s life but now can preserve his friend’s honor. Airing tonight at 9/8c, “It’s a very different kind of episode and unlike anything we’ve ever done before,” exec producer Eric Guggenheim previously told TVLine. “We think it’s going to be pretty special, and we’re excited for everyone to see it.”
