Death Cab for Cutie paid tribute to Mimi Parker, who died in November, with a cover of Low’s “The Plan.” The track was recorded after news of Parker’s death and was accompanied by a statement from Death Cab for Cutie, who said the song was one of their favorites.
“We were incredibly saddened by Mimi Parker’s passing this past November and we believe the best way to remember the musicians we lose is to play their songs,” wrote the band. “‘The Plan’ is presented here as a tribute to Mimi.

Fans of Low are continuing to mourn Mimi Parker, who died Saturday after battling ovarian cancer. A day after her death, Robert Plant honored Parker by performing a cover of one of the duo’s songs.
“We’ve been drawn to the music of the great duo Low from Duluth, Minnesota, and sadly tonight, we know that unfortunately we’ve lost one of those two people,” Plant said during a show in Glasgow. “So we give our songs tonight to Mimi and Alan [Sparhawk].”

Mimi Parker, whose lush soprano vocals and minimalist drumming helped define the “slowcore” band Low, has died following a battle with ovarian cancer.
Her husband, Low frontman Alan Sparhawk, confirmed the news on Twitter, “Friends, it’s hard to put the universe into language and into a short message, but… She passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours. Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.”

Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, the married couple behind Low, have canceled another slate of upcoming concerts to focus on Parker’s battle with ovarian cancer.
“We were hoping she would be healthy enough to do the UK/Europe tour we had planned in November, but it is clear that we should stay home and continue with treatment and care as she is still struggling with ovarian cancer,” Sparhawk wrote to fans Friday. “There have been difficult days but your love has sustained us and will continue to lift us through this time.

Bon Iver, Low’s Alan Sparhawk, and Mumu Fresh are among the artists set to play the one-day Water Is Life: Stop Line 3 festival, which will benefit efforts to fight the construction of the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline.
Water Is Life will take place on August 18th at Bayfront Park in Duluth, Minnesota. The lineup will feature a mix of artists, poets, and indigenous leaders, with all proceeds going to the indigenous woman-led non-profit, Honor the Earth. “Disappearing” is the sound of anticipating, hoping, and wanting perpetually. There is no resolution in the song, no broad smile and a hardy “That’s all folks.” It’s simply three-and-a-half minutes of throbbing, unrequited yearning, Low at their very best, and it is beautiful.
For nearly three decades, Low’s Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, a married couple from Duluth, Minnesota, have specialized in heartrendingly austere meditations on the human condition. In Low’s world, the less said, the better, and their instincts for minimalism could make Marie Kondo...

Filmmaker Adam Barnick dropped us a line pointing us to a new music video he has just completed for the band Rivulets that without question wears its classic horror influences on its sleeve. Check it out for some spooky acoustic magic.
For more from the Rivulets, you can dig on some ear candy below the video for their track "How, Who."
About the Band
"Who? Singer-songwriter Nathan Amundson, joined by members of Low, Magnetic Fields, and Puritan. Sounds like? Dark, sparse folk music played on acoustic guitar and an assortment of other instruments (ukulele, xylophone, toy piano and more). How is it? Quietly effective and moving. The subtleties may be lost on first listen, but close examination will be rewarded handsomely." - Alternative Press, 2002

Retribution Gospel Choir, the side project of Low frontman Alan Sparhawk, has announced its third record, and the details make it sound like a doozy. The not-so-creatively titled 3 features just two songs—“Can’t Walk Out” and “Seven”—each of which clocks in at about 20 minutes long. “Can’t Walk Out” has been a staple of the band’s live show for some time now, and “Seven” features guest guitarist Nils Cline of Wilco. The band is playing one show this month and several in February 2013. Dates are below. Retribution Gospel Choir covers The Beach Boys December ...

Minnesota slowcore darlings Low are working on their new record, which, as tipped in an A.V. Club interview last week, will be produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. In the meantime, frontman Alan Sparhawk has released a new Ep with one of his side projects, The Murder Of Crows. Imperfecta is available on iTunes, Amazon, or through the band’s website, and features vocals from Low’s Mimi Parker on at least one track. The Murder Of Crows will be performing songs off the Ep live via webcast Monday, Sept. 24. The show will take place at the Sacred ...

Retribution Gospel Choir, the side project of Low’s Alan Sparhawk, showcases the harder, classic-rock side of the typically spare and hazy Duluth, Minnesota band. It also features two-thirds of its members, counting bandmate Steve Garrington as part of its roster. Rgc’s last effort, 2, has a sense of fun and light-heartedness not typically associated with the less-than-sunny (just like Duluth!) band. Now a new Ep, The Revolution, is available for free download. The band has also announced some new tour dates, including an April 7 stop at First Avenue. You can also check out Rgc covering the Beach ...

Low can’t decide whether to stay in its comfort zone or sneak out of it on C’mon. Not as stylistically risky as 2007’s Drums And Guns, C’mon goes through the paces of Low’s familiar sound on songs like “Especially Me,” which waltzes along on Mimi Parker’s characteristically anxious vocal, and “$20,” a pretty ballad that feels like a lost memory made concrete by Parker and Alan Sparhawk’s spare harmonies. Some of the more conventional, genial numbers (“Try To Sleep,” “Done,” “You See Everything”) don’t build to the climaxes of old; rather, they ...

Low will take to the road this spring in support of the band’s forthcoming record C’mon first album in four years. Low frontman Alan Sparhawk has described the record as “most and straightforward” albums that the band has ever created. Low kicks off the trek on April 6 at Radio City Music Hall, before heading across the U.S. and Europe....

After a four year wait, Low are prepared to release another new effort, titled "C'mon." Sub Pop drops it on April 12, with tour dates forthcoming. It's the follow-up to 2007's "Drums and Guns," and upon a couple listens, think less guns. Think more healing than aching, maturing rather than ominous. But, considering it's slow-core, shoegaze Low, of course there's still that good old ache. Slow-builder "Nothing But Heart" alone will put you in that lonely but happy place. "With the last couple of records, we were grappling with something outside of ourselves," said frontman Alan Sparhawk in a statement. "This one...

Retribution Gospel Choir’s live sets have already proven that singer-guitarist Alan Sparhawk and bassist Steve Garrington don’t sacrifice their meticulous sense of sonics when they step away from their main band, Low, to rock out with drummer Eric Pollard. Rgc’s self-titled debut album in 2007 boasted a great set of songs, but the follow-up, 2, dwarfs it in sheer dynamic scope. Sparhawk’s aggressive riffs still anchor the sound, and Pollard’s drum fills still evoke a graceful sandbag ballet, but pristine vocal harmonies and dub-style echoes sneak up to add another layer of gravity. In spite ...
