The sentencing of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh for the murders of his wife and son is unlikely to end the public’s fascination with the family: There are already TV specials, docuseries and podcasts about the slayings and at least two scripted shows on the way.
Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison on Friday after being convicted a day earlier of killing his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, and their youngest son, Paul. He was found guilty on all charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon in the commitment of a violent crime.
In June 2021, Maggie and Paul were found shot to death on the family’s estate in Colleton County, South Carolina. But the prominent family’s legacy began unraveling years earlier when questions arose following the death of Mallory Beach in a boating accident involving Paul, the unsolved 2015 death...

Updated At 10:16 a.m. Pt: The WGA West has issued their own statement, signed by hundreds of showrunners. It can be read in its entirety below, but states in part:
“We agree that testing is paramount and the cornerstone of any return to work. We also find their suggestion of a zone system smart and essential – with one caveat: to reduce a director’s guesswork in trying to execute the Showrunner’s vision, and, therefore, reduce the number of reshoots, the involvement of the Showrunners and their writer proxies on the set is a must – either in person or if those with disability or underlying health issues are unable to be on set physically, with proper accommodations so they can still do their jobs effectively.”
Previously:
Guidelines from Hollywood unions on how to resume production amid the Covid-19 pandemic were released last week, but one group was noticeably left out: writers.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is one of the best shows of the year that you think will be snubbed/overlooked when it comes to the Top 10 Best-of lists for 2016?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
As much as I’d like to point to an early year entry like “Bloodline” Season 2 (far better than Season 1, thanks to the improved structure) or “The Path” (Hulu’s most complete offering to date), I’m going to make the case for “Divorce.” I feel the HBO drama — “black comedy” could fit, too, but the show’s highest merits lie within its emotional substance — may be overlooked simply because too many critics (and viewers) find it hard to return to,...

Trick or treat?
There were plenty of tricks and treats on Quarry Season 1 Episode 7 as Mac and Buddy were sent on a job to take down a familiar slimy heroin dealer, Marcus found something interesting under the bathroom sink, and Detective Olsen finally got the break he was looking for.
It's hard to believe there's only one more hour of Quarry left. I'm so drawn into Mac's complicated life, I'm not sure what I'm going to do after next week. There's been no word on whether Cinemax will be renewing the show, but after this hour, there might not be any more story to tell. If Detective Olsen has his way, that is.
Then again, there's still so much story left to tell, I can't imagine how it could possibly end with the next episode. There are so many questions that still need to be answered, right?

“Quarry” premieres on Cinemax tonight, and so far, critics are mixed on how good the new ’70s-set crime drama is. But amidst the criticism, they provide plenty of reasons why it’s worth watching. The series, created by former “Rectify” writers Michael D. Fuller and Graham Gordy, stars Logan Marshall-Green (“Prometheus”) as Mac Conway. He’s a Vietnam veteran-turned-hitman nicknamed Quarry because he’s “hollowed out on the inside, hard as rock” — which helps him keep his composure in dangerous situations. His combat skills are linked to a traumatic experience in battle that garnered the attention of the media and...

When “The Knick” debuted on Cinemax two years ago, it marked a substantial shift in content for Cinemax. HBO’s double-a affiliate took a swing in the big leagues with Steven Soderbergh’s beautifully captured period piece, and, while it didn’t exactly strike ratings gold, “The Knick” did earn the network a lot of attention — from critics, awards shows and the industry at large. So it makes sense that the network would follow up one dark period piece with another of similar construction. The only problem? “Quarry” suffers from the same issue “The Knick” did: They backed the wrong protagonist.
“Quarry” tracks Mac Conway (Logan Marshall-Green), a Vietnam veteran returning home to Memphis after his second tour of duty. A minor celebrity for all the wrong reasons, folks back home suspect Conway did some bad things overseas — worse things than are required of war veterans. This overwhelming perception makes...

I used to keep a tally of what I referred to as "doughnut shows," which were empty in the middle, thanks to a boring main character, but delicious on the outside. But in a recent conversation with my pal Maureen Ryan, as I listed some examples of that phenomenon — your Once and Agains, your Huffs — she pointed out that I had the food metaphor all wrong. These were not doughnut shows, she pointed out, because while the main characters were less exciting than the second bananas, they also weren't completely without value in their own right. These were, she explained, tofu shows: "Like, put tofu in a good sauce with other stuff and I will forgive it for being tofu? It doesn't have much taste on its own, but it's all about everything around it pulling focus from it and actually supplying the flavor." Perhaps the greatest tofu show of all time was Boardwalk Empire,...

Cinemax has had great success with its recent run of original programming. Now, the network is set to debut its new crime drama “Quarry,” loosely based on the series of novels by mystery writer Max Allan Collins.

Southland, “Chaos”
Written by Zack Whedon
Directed by Christopher Chulack
Aired April 10th, 2013 on TNT
Forget Hannibal. Forget American Horror Story. Forget “The Rains of Castamere.” You want harrowing? You want soul-crushing blackness with a side of trauma? You want pure, unforgiving narrative nihilism? Try on the penultimate episode of sadly-departed cop drama Southland. Whereas the typical episode hones in on a few plotlines between seven or eight characters, “Chaos” revolves mostly around a single, nightmare-inducing act: the kidnapping of two of our principal characters by a pair of deranged meth-heads. On paper, it sounds like your average “Very Special Episode” of… really, any cop show ever. The “team member(s) get nabbed and have to be rescued by the rest of the team” setup is well-worn territory. “Chaos”, however, is a different beast entirely. Based loosely on a real incident, “Chaos” earns its title honestly, unfolding seemingly without rhyme or reason,...

I know British actress Nikki Amuka-Bird best as the long suffering Det. Sgt. Erin Gray on BBC One’s addictive series Luther. Fans will get to see another side of her now that she’s been cast in the new Cinemax drama pilot Quarry.
Logan Marshall-Green stars in the pilot as a 1973 era Vietnam vet, freshly home for the war and quite disillusioned. So, what does he do? He joins a shadow organization to become a hitman.
Amuka-Bird will play Ruth, explained the latest Deadline casting update. Ruth is the wife of Artie, friend to Marshall-Green’s Quarry. Artie is a former Marine, by the by.

Cinemax is busy beefing up its sniper pilot, Quarry. We’ve been bringing you all the latest casting news involved in this interesting 1970s set thriller. Today we can add a Thor actor to the mix. Stellan Skarsgård has signed the dotted line to co-star in the pilot.
Quarry could be a success. The network has already seen positive results with their original series Banshee and Strike Back. Quarry is based on the Max Allan Collins series of novels and follows a Marine sniper, who we previously revealed would be acted by Prometheus actor, Logan Marshall-Green. When our Marine returns home from Vietnam in 1973, he finds an America that would demonize him for doing nothing more than sacrificing just about everything to protect their freedoms.
As a result, Marshall-Green’s character, whose name is Quarry, becomes a contract killer. He is good a killing after all.

Cinemax just recruited a Marine sniper. Okay, so Prometheus actor Logan Marshall-Green isn’t really a soldier, but he’ll play one on TV. The network chose him to star in their new drama pilot titled Quarry.
The pilot is based upon a Max Allan Collins’ book, which follows a Marine sniper who returns home from Vietnam in 1973 to become disillusioned by the America he finds. It isn’t the one he left behind and it isn’t kind to him. “Combat-hardened and disillusioned, he’s recruited into a network of contract killers and corruption spanning the length of the Mississippi River,” reported THR. I told you it was a drama, and what a drama, but I see exciting thriller elements here as well.

Rectify Season 1, Episode 4 ‘Plato’s Cave’
Directed by Jim McKay
Written by Graham Gordy & Michael D. Fuller

I’ve always been fascinated by the ideas behind Plato’s Allegory of the Cave – so when I saw the title of tonight’s episode, I was obviously drooling with excitement. And, boy, did ‘Plato’s Cave’ not disappoint: it certainly fits the quiet, character-based model of previous episodes, but focuses intently on this exploration of faith versus reason, giving life to the mental and spiritual struggle Daniel Holden’s currently going through.
I don’t want to spend 10,000 words getting into Plato’s allegory (there’s a really well-organized Wikipedia article here for detailed info), but the foundation of it is fairly simple. In it, Plato presents a simple situation: a group of people are chained to stand facing a wall for their entire lives,...

With the successes of its original programs like Banshee and Strike Back, Cinemax is looking keep the streak going by greenlighting the pilot for a project based on the Max Allan Collins series of novels, Quarry. At first I thought this series must be about what it’s like to work in a quarry and would follow the lives of several laborers as they struggle with the dangers of their jobs and how it affects their already shaky personal lives, but upon more thorough research it would appear Quarry isn’t like that at all. I’m saddened, but I was suppose the project still sounds pretty cool…

Hollywoodnews.com: AMC, which has been a tour de force in original one-hour dramas, is set to pick up a project by “The Blind Side” director John Lee Hancock.
Entitled “The Wreck,” the drama, penned by Graham Gordy and Michael Fuller, takes place in the world of Southern college football.
