Screen Gems’ horror sequel Underworld 5 isn’t the only production that Prague is playing host to this week, with news coming through that both Jessica Chastain and Daniel Brühl are descending on the Czech capital to begin filming on Niki Caro’s adaptation, The Zookeeper’s Wife.
Taking inspiration from Diane Ackerman’s non-fiction novel of the same name, Chastain is on board to play Antonina Żabiński during the formative years of World War II. Situated in Poland in 1939, the native farmer worked to establish a zoo of her own along with her husband Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh), but their lives are effectively upended with the Nazi army invades their home country.
Having to report to a volatile new zoo keeper, the pair soon take solace in the resistance and their plan to rescue the population from the fast declining state of the Warsaw Ghetto. Putting their children at great risk,...

Asiel Norton's mystical post-apocalyptic film Orion is on the verge of having its world premier at Fantasia Fest and, as such, the first bit of footage has emerged from the film (that is, besides the footage we premiered months ago). In it, Lily Cole delivers a dark message to drifter David Arquette.
Written and directed by Spirit Award nominee Asiel Norton, and starring David Arquette, Lily Cole, and Goran Kostic, the story is set in a dark age after civilization has collapsed, and follows a maiden who is being held by a cannibal shaman. However, an illiterate hunter stumbles across the shaman's cottage, and the maiden promises to lead him to a city containing the world's last survivors.

Imagine if you were stranded on Mars, a distant planet with unlimited mysteries, moons away from any rescue or civilization. What could make that situation worse? You’re already thinking about needing a spaceship just to escape, you’ve got dwindling life support, you’re on freakin’ Mars, how could it possibly get any worse?! Zombies. That’s right bitches, there are zombies on Mars, Just Like John Carpenter Told Us There Would Be! Alright, those were totally ghosts, but any chance I get to reference John Carpenter’s Ghosts Of Mars I take. Anywho, yes, there’s apparently some type of bacterial life on Mars that turns people into zombies, spreading like an infection, and Liev Schreiber is the only man who can stop it during The Last Days On Mars.

Mars Attacks: Robinson’s Promising Debut an Arid Mirage
Early on in Ruairi Robinson’s directorial debut, The Last Days on Mars, a generic yet eerily promising set-up will doubtlessly remind audiences of a slew of similar space gone wrong sci-fi entries, both classic and not. An unmistakable derivative of Alien, right down to finicky crew dynamics, Robinson’s rather promising presentation fails to maximize the momentum as the film dwindles into its third act inevitabilities, left wide open for the possibility of more to come.
Only nineteen hours left of a six month research mission on Mars has an eight person crew going a little stir crazy. Science Officer Kim Aldrich (Olivia Williams) is upset that the team has found nothing substantial and it seems her hopes had been set on finding evidence of indigenous life. It seems she’s been taking out her disappointment on the other crew...

Director: Ruairi Robinson. Writers: Sydney J. Bounds and Clive Dawson. Cast: Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Charles Brunel, Olivia Williams, Johnny Harris and Goran Kostic. The Last Days on Mars is a film adaptation of Sydney J. Bounds' short story "The Animators. The film was recently released in a few theatres and on video-on-demand (Oct. 31st, 2013). Starring Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas and Olivia Williams, the film boils down to zombies in space. Flesheaters chase astronauts through much of the film's runtime. And, The Last Days on Mars is a good blend of horror and sci-fi, which makes this film mostly exciting. Though, a few surprises are lacking. At the heart of the film is an endearing relationship between two characters. But, love and life take a backseat to looming death, in this heart pounding adventure. The story begins with eight, bickering astronauts on Mars. Their six cabin feverish...

I’m an absolute sucker for movies set on Mars, and I’m hoping that as we actually do inch closer to sending real people to Mars we’ll be seeing more films featuring the red planet.
The Last Days on Mars has finally announced itself with a trailer and I already know where my butt will be on December 6th. The trailer does seem to give quite a lot away unfortunately, they could have ended it at the halfway point and it still would have been just as effective in my opinion. Oh well, you can check it out for yourself after the jump!

Honestly, before I even watched the trailer for the film, I was keenly interested in this film because it's directed by Ruairi Robinson. I caught Ruairi Robinson's Last Days on Mars at Cannes earlier this year and in my "C+" review called it "a story far from unique, but in the 'midnight movie' kind of way it tends to satisfy just enough for On Demand consideration." Starring Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Olivia Williams, Elias Koteas and Goran Kostic, the film is, for lack of a better description, a Mars-set zombie movie with an attempt to hint at such similarly themed horror classics as Romero's Dead franchise, the Alien films and The Thing. I had a decent enough time with it and when it hits VOD on Halloween you may want to give it a peek, but I don't think it's worth a trip to the theater once it hits limited release in early December. Check out the new red band trailer directly below and read my full review right here. On the last day...

Last Days On Mars is a film you wouldn’t expect to wow crowds at Cannes. It’s a sci-fi horror mash up set in space. Doesn’t sound like the sort of flick that’d win over critics at the year’s most influential event in cinema. Now you can get a glimpse of the film that’s causing such a stir, as the first clip is available online.
Taking elements of Prometheus, The Thing and Alien, Last Days On Mars (previously known as The Animators) comes from filmmaker Ruari Robinson. Robinson made a name for himself creating shorts. He received an Oscar nomination for 2002′s Fifty Percent Grey. Now he has a full length feature on his resume, with a pretty phenomenal cast list.
From the brevity of this preview the film shares a striking similarity to another upcoming sci-fi space flick, Europa Report. Both tell the tale...

Mars gets dangerous. If the name Ruairi Robinson sounds familiar, that’s because he was, at one point, supposed to make his feature film directorial debut on Warner Bros.’s big-budget live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga/anime “Akira”. Well that didn’t work out, but Ruairi Robinson has now moved on to the sci-fi/horror “Last Days on Mars”. No trailer yet, but check out your first clip from the movie below. The plot sounds particularly “The Thing”-ish: A group of astronaut explorers succumb one by one to a mysterious and terrifying force while collecting specimens on Mars. The rather nice cast (note: I’m not saying all-star, but I am saying Very nice) includes Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams, Johnny Harris, Goran Kostic and Tom Cullen. No Stateside release date yet, though the film has a September 19 release date in the UK.

It’s a question even David Bowie couldn’t find an answer to. Is there life on Mars? Well if Irish director Ruairí Robinson’s debut feature is anything to go by, there is indeed – and it ain’t pretty… Nearing the end of a six month research mission to Mars, the crew of the Tantalus Base look set to return home frustratingly empty-handed. But, a mere 19 hours before their Earth-bound pick-up arrives, science officer Petrovich (Goran Kostic) finds evidence of a new strain of bacteria thriving within the planet’s surface. Keeping his discovery...

Writer/director Ruairi Robinson made a bit of a name for himself online with his short film Blinky (watch it here) back in 2011. The dark sci-fi short featured a household robot gone rogue and was a sign of some promise. His debut feature, Last Days on Mars, has premiered here in Cannes and keeps Robinson locked in the sci-fi realm, but this time he has a bigger budget and some bigger names in tow. The end result is a visit to the red planet with a story far from unique, but in the "midnight movie" kind of way it tends to satisfy just enough for On Demand consideration. The story takes place during the final hours of a six month mission to Mars. The final checks are being done and some are looking forward to getting home, while others wish they could stay longer and some are merely indifferent. However,...

Chicago – Cinema is one of the most powerful tools of communication that mankind can utilize to shed light on gravely overlooked areas on our planet. Yet good intentions are not enough to achieve success with this art form. If the scripted drama rings false, the message, however vital, gets lost in a sea of disinterest.
Like Julian Schnabel’s superior passion project, “Miral,” “In the Land of Blood and Honey” stages a bland two-dimensional human story against a riveting three-dimensional backdrop. It marks the directorial debut of Angelina Jolie, whose travels around the world and mounting rage at the crimes against women led her to pen a screenplay set during the Bosnian War of the mid-’90s. Though the subject matter is obviously worthy of cinematic treatment, Jolie’s attempt to symbolize the tragedy of warring neighbors with an epic love story falls flat. The results are deeply unsatisfying.

Jolie and several Serb members of the cast have received online threats after the film premiered before 5,000 people in Sarajevo
Listen to the audio - Angelina Jolie speaks to Julian Borger about In the Land of Blood and Honey
Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, was intended to remind the world of the horrors of the Bosnian war which began 20 years ago, and trigger a debate among Bosnians over what happened and why. But it has succeeded most in exposing the depth of the rifts in a country that many fear is moving away from reconciliation and drifting once more towards dangerous instability.
Since the film opened, with a peace award at the Berlin film festival on Monday and a premiere before 5,000 people in Sarajevo on Tuesday night, Jolie and several Serbian members of the cast have received threats.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie wrapped up a whirlwind stay in Sarajevo today. They were ready to board a private jet, but first, Angelina thrilled some of the airport's workers by saying hello, signing autographs, and posing for photos. She and Brad arrived in Bosnia yesterday ahead of last night's In the Land of Blood and Honey premiere. Angelina, who directed the picture, joined stars Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic, Vanessa Glodjo, and Rade Serbedzija. It was an extra special event, as 50,000 were in the audience. Angelina Jolie got a standing ovation after the screening, and she was touched by the reaction. Angelina spoke about Bosnians watching the film, saying, "It has proven what is happening in the country. It has reminded people of the complications of the region, of the way people view each other. And also many people have risen up like these people who are doing private screenings...

It is no secret that Hollywood darling Angelina Jolie invests time and energy in far more than just her film roles. She is also a humanitarian and spokesperson for a variety of major issues in conflict plagued countries around the globe. Luckily, her fame has awarded so much clout that her efforts as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees have led to more people being made aware of those same issues than otherwise would have been the case. With that knowledge in mind, it should come as no surprise that when given the opportunity to direct her first feature length film, In the Land of Blood and Honey, she opted for a story well suited to her interests, namely, humanitarian atrocities in a war-torn country,

In the Land of Blood and Honey
Directed by: Angelina Jolie
Cast: Zana Marjanovic, Goran Kostic, Rade Serbedzija
Running Time: 2 hrs 7 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 6, 2012 (Chicago)
Plot: A Serbian soldier (Kostic) fighting in the Bosnia War takes captive a Bosnian woman (Marjanovic) he knew from his peaceful past.
Who’S It For? If you’re looking for a romance story that will leave you colder than freezing January weather, here’s a foreign film just for you. Although it is directed by Angelina Jolie, the star-power ends there. Expect much more blood than honey.
Overall
As far as an actor-turned-director debut goes, Jolie certainly has not taken the easy route. Featuring no actor at least immediately recognizable to American filmgoers, In the Land of Blood and Honey goes deep into the chaos of the Bosnian War, and strictly uses Bosnian and Serbian dialogue (at least, in the print...

Chicago – The sorrows of war has been played out too many times in our so-called modern age. The excessively cruel Bosnian war – a three year conflict that introduced the vile term “ethnic cleansing” – is the background of Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The Bosnian War began in 1992 and in three short years displaced two million people and killed over 100,000 more. The Serbian army was especially cruel to the Muslim population, and Jolie symbolizes this by showing a split between a Serb and Muslim who were lovers before the war. The camera doesn’t blink in this film, as rape, murder and abject human atrocities are played out in a war that was useless, ideological waste of time. Jolie works from her own very literate script, exposing a horror that happened a relatively short time ago.

On the surface, In the Land of Blood and Honey seems like a vanity project of sorts for its maker, Angelina Jolie. After all, the actress/humanitarian/super-mom is one of the few figures in Hollywood who could strive to make a Bosnian War-set Romeo and Juliet with subtitles and actually get it done. Yet the finished project suggests that we might have found a new director to watch. Jolie brings a sincere, serious vision to this ambitious enterprise. Crafted with a veteran’s skill, the film ably traverses a range of emotions, from the intimate warmth of bedside scenes to the cold, calculated brutality of war at its most horrific. Shooting mostly in Hungary but working with an all-Bosnian cast, Jolie brings alive the terrible, destructive ethnic conflict that erupted between 1992 and 1995, after the former Yugoslavia split apart. Her narrative imparts the conflict’s heartaches through its focus on the forbidden, strife-ridden...

"The challenges of making a film about historical atrocity are notoriously knotty," writes Andrew Schenker in Slant. "The director must convey the full force of horrific action without lapsing into either prurience or numbing repetition, while the film needs not only depict these terrible acts, but provide some kind of larger understanding as to why they were perpetrated. While Angelina Jolie's Bosnian War-set In the Land of Blood and Honey can't claim to fulfill either of these conditions, it deserves credit for one thing: It refuses to soft pedal the horrors committed by Bosnian Serbs against their Muslim neighbors in the early-to-mid-90s."
Nick Schager, writing for Box Office, agrees: "If there's a redeeming quality to In the Land of Blood and Honey's treatment of its subject matter it's that, unlike weak-kneed films such as Hotel Rwanda, it refuses to shy away from the true, vile reality of the Bosnian war.

Some directors might play it safe for their first feature-length film, but Angelina Jolie has rarely played by the rules. Jolie's directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey," was controversial before it even started filming, and it's certain to be just as talked-about once it opens on December 23.
"Blood and Honey" is a love story of sorts, set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War. While some lovers are simply star-crossed, Ajla (Zana Marjanovic) and Danijel (Goran Kostic) face insurmountable odds. Angelina Jolie wrote and directed the Bosnian War romance In The Land Of Blood And Honey, but does not appear in it. That is wise. If Jolie were merely to cameo in the film, M. Night Shyamalan-style, her magnetic presence, however fleeting, would forever throw off the film’s balance. Jolie is too innately glamorous to inhabit the film’s cold, grey universe convincingly. It’s a film of shuddering earnestness and fevered good intentions gone awry, a dreary slog of a message movie with little but noble if unfulfilled aspirations to commend it. Goran Kostic stars as a Bosnian ...

Angelina Jolie's directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey, a love story set during the Bosnian War in the '90s, opens here in the Us on Friday. She was in NYC earlier this month doing press for the film and joined her cast for a press conference at the Waldorf Astoria. Leading ladies Zana Marjanovic and Vanessa Glodjo, as well as actors Goran Kostic and Rade Serbedzija, sat with Angelina on a panel moderated by NPR's Tom Gjelten. The conversation was all about the movie, with Angelina speaking about the process of creating the script with input from survivors. She also touched on the directors she has learned from and the challenges of making a movie in a foreign language. Angelina said: On learning about directing: "You learn from everybody. Angelina Jolie's dramatic directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey , a film she wrote as well as directed, tells the love story between Serbian soldier Danijel (Goran Kostic) and a Muslim woman named Ajla (Zana Marjanovic) and how the war between their two people makes it impossible for that love to flourish. It's an incredibly mature film for a first-time narrative filmmaker, one that shows you some of the worst horrors of the war in Bosnia, a war that's mainly been overlooked and overshadowed in this country, one in which Muslim women were raped and used as human shields. ComingSoon.net attended the press conference for Jolie's new movie, where the actress-turned-filmmaker was joined by Kostic, Marjanovic, Rade Serbedzija, Vanessa Glodjo, Alma Terzic, Nikola Djuricko...

We saw the first trailer for Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, debut back in October, and it was pretty powerful stuff, demonstrating a clear talent from Jolie as both its writer and its director.
Last month, we then got an artistic first poster for the film, and following on from that, we now have six new clips to share with you, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, entitled ‘Still Murder’, ‘Shepherd’, ‘Distraction’, ‘Gallery’, ‘Un’, and ‘Open the Door’. Just from those little titles alone, you can already form an idea of the kind of emotionally dramatic and powerful film this is going to be.
“The drama is set in the backdrop of the Bosnian War that tore the Balkan region apart in the 1990s. The film tells the story of Danijel (Goran Kostic) and Ajla (Zana Marjanović), Bosnians from different sides of the brutal ethnic war.

HollywoodNews.com: Angelina Jolie’s director debut is caught between two very specific goals. On one hand, it wants to be a thoughtful, adult romantic drama that happens to be set during a period of rather ghastly civil war. On the other, because there really hasn’t been a major motion picture set during the Bosnian war that raged primarily from 1992-1995, writer/director Jolie feels a need to craft a somewhat definitive account of the conflict. As a result, much of the picture feels like a glorified book report, with characters ham-fistedly explaining the nature of the conflict, the living conditions of the victims, and character arcs. The film constantly violates the ‘show-don’t-tell’ rule, with lead characters explicitly stating their emotions and their character arc. Like Atom Egoyan’s Ararat (which dealt with the 1915 Armenian genocide), the film spends much time feeling less like a...
