New Delhi, Feb 22 (Ians) “Sadly, studying music or arts for a lifetime is not considered important enough. Success means winning a talent show and not otherwise. I fail to understand how one puts artistic urges in these parameters?” questions Padma Shri awardee Shubha Mudgal, adding parents and guardians and schools need to expose children to all kinds of music and arts, and the splendid diversity this country offers in it.

"South Asia" takes in a lot of territory, both literally and culturally/aesthetically, so you've got to hand it to the fest and programmer Galen Rosenthal in particular: the diversity of themes, styles, and genres on display in this year's Saiff is downright stunning. The easier path would have been to pick a brow--low, middle, or high--and stick with it, thus playing it safe by appealing to a certain target audience and stacking the deck accordingly. Instead, this year's Saiff goes after movie-lovers in all shapes and sizes. There are wide-ranging approaches to filmmaking on display, from the boldly experimental to crowd-pleasing popcorn fare, and with both veterans and up-and-comers well-represented. Yet because of that same diversity, fest-goers may welcome some guidance, so with that in mind I offer up the following preview of what's on tap.

Actor Aamir Khan, who produced Peepli Live, has found himself in a credit controversy. In an interview to a publication, the movie’s makers, Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui, said that they have disassociated themselves from the film as they were unhappy with the presentation of the titles and acknowledgments. “Those who wanted the money, fame and credits wanted it more than us, so we left it to them,” they said. ...

It's a shared chuckle emanating from deep within our bellies that breaks the ice — an advertisement lampooning a TV journalist has just flashed across the screen before the start of the film. I'm sitting between filmmakers Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui, and we've come to watch their debut film, Peepli Live (Pl), at a New Friends Colony cinema on an extremely rainy Thursday afternoon. It's a brave film, I tell Anusha in the interval. To have been a part of the same medium and then to sharply critique it. She shyly smiles a 'thank you'. As we tank up on popcorn, ...

Peepli Live
Peepli Live is a fruit of a tree which modern directors like Shyam Benegal, Kundan Shah, Saeed Mirza and many others nourished with a wholesome diet of realism and irony. Director Anusha Rizvi’s decision to tell a story closer home in Peepli Live rather than something that’s set in the Swiss Alps or the Boulevards of New York or for that matter the suburbs of Mumbai or seedy by lanes of Delhi perhaps marks a revival of that fast wilting tree.
Peepli Live at an apparent level tells the story of the plight of small farmers in India – which surprisingly remains untold until now, despite its gravity – but could stand for everything that’s going wrong with the fast evolving India Story, a term that today’s business leaders throw around callously. A part of India seems to be moving so fast that it’s threating...

Who is she?
An Indian film director who was the darling of the festival circuit earlier this year when her black comedy, Peepli Live, did the rounds. It was the first ever Indian film to show in competition at Sundance.
Why do we like it?
For its winning mix of Frank Capra big-heartedness and sharp-clawed satire. A down-on-his-luck weed-smoking farmer (Omkar Das Manikpuri) is behind on a bank loan. The poor guy decides to kill himself when he hears that the government is compensating families of farmers who commit suicide.
That's a tad far fetched.
Depressingly not. Rizvi, an ex journo, wrote the script after seeing a piece on the news about just such a scheme. In the film, the farmer becomes a media sensation...

If all goes well, the perfectionist Khan would soon be sharing acting tips with kids of village Bhadwai, where Peepli Live was shot. The idea has been proposed by villagers themselves. Realising the potential of film industry, the villagers felt that their kids should be introduced to the basics of filmmaking. They have sent a request to Aamir for starting an acting school for their children in the village itself. The request has been forwarded to Mahmood Farooqui, co-director of Pl, reports Mid-day. Before filming in the village, Mahmood had made a 15-minute short film along with Raghubir Yadav and a few other ...

London -- U.K. indie distributor Artificial Eye has snapped up Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui's "Peepli Live," a farcical contemporary comedy set in rural India.
Also written by Rizvi, the movie is produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao with co-producer Ronnie Screwvala and tells the story of an impoverished farmer who learns of a government scheme to aid the families of indebted farmers if they commit suicide and thus decides on a very drastic plan to save his land from repossession.
The film stars Omkar Das Manikpuri alongside Raghubir Yadav, model, actor and television presenter Malaika Shenoy, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vishal O Sharma.
"Peepli Live" was the first Indian film to unspool in the World Cinema competitive section at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year before then showcasing at the Berlin International Film Festival 2010.
