Halle Berry plays a mother with twin sons battling an evil spirit closing in on their wilderness home after a world-ending event in the trailer for Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which dropped Thursday.
In the horror-thriller, director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl) has the remote house in the woods fitted with a long ropes to enable mother and sons to remain connected at all times as unseen dangers approach.
“The evil out there is clever. One touch without a rope is all it takes,” Berry’s character tells her sons at one point in the trailer, as they commit to keep tethered to the ropes for safety and connection. But as demonic forces engulf their off-the-grid house, one of the twins questions whether evil exists.
And that breaks the family bond and triggers an all-out battle for survival. “That rope is your lifeline. Never let go. Say it,...

Originally announced last year under the title Mother Land, the next film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Crawl) is now titled Never Let Go, and Lionsgate has released the official trailer this morning. Watch it below.
Never Let Go arrives in theaters on September 27, 2024. The premise for this one looks to be similar to films including A Quiet Place and Bird Box, centered on a small family unit’s struggle to survive within a world gone to hell. There’s a whole lot of snake-like imagery in this first look trailer – jump to 1:44 for a blink-and-miss-it little tease… or check out our screen-grab below – but the threat outside their door is still very much a mystery at this point in time.
All we know is… one touch is all it takes…
Academy Award winner Halle Berry is leading the film’s cast.

Halle Berry can’t let go of psychological thrillers.
The Oscar winner turned up in Las Vegas on Wednesday during Lionsgate’s studio presentation to promote its new film, Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go, which brings Berry back into a genre she explored more than 20 years ago, in earlier work like Gothika. But this one pushed her to new limits.
Set for release on Sept. 27, Never Let Go centers on a mother and her twin sons as they try to protect themselves from evil lurking in and around their home. Needing to stay connected at all times — always by a connection of ropes — they hold tight to one another and never let go. However, one of the boys questions if the evil is real, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. Anthony B. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. After directing three “Night at the Museum” movies, Shawn Levy didn’t want to be confined to directing family comedies for the rest of his career. If you’re doing something successfully, he told IndieWire, it’s easy to be “pigeonholed” by Hollywood into that one thing.
But he’s been far from limited under the banner of his own production company, 21 Laps. Levy and his company have been prolific hit-makers since it launched in 2006, and he has produced and directed everything from indie darlings (“The Spectacular Now”), ambitious Best Picture nominees (“Arrival”), studio blockbuster satires (“Free Guy“), prestige limited series (“All the Light We Cannot See”), Stephen King horror movies (“The Boogeyman”), and the biggest Netflix show ever (“Stranger Things”), all of which depart from the family-friendly event movies on which he cut his teeth.
“You need to refuse to be limited by everyone else’s assumptions,” Levy told IndieWire during a recent interview.

Exclusive: John Patton Ford is writing to direct an untitled film for Netflix with 21 Laps producing. Ford wrote and directed the Aubrey Plaza starrer Emily the Criminal.
The drama follows a mysterious Union spy named James Andrews who, along with infantry volunteers, stole a Confederate steam engine and planned to destroy the entire Confederacy’s supply line to end the war.
Racing along at speeds up to 60 mph, they destroyed track to the main Southern supply route behind them and shut down communications by cutting telegraph lines, all to disrupt the Confederacy’s supply line. The six surviving raiders became the first to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by Abraham Lincoln. The caper also would be the historical basis for Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film The General.

Prolific producer and director Shawn Levy fell in love with “All the Light We Cannot See” long before he was attached to adapt the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr into a new Netflix limited series, out Thursday, November 2. “I did not read it as a filmmaker. I read it as a reader,” he said to IndieWire over Zoom. “By the time I got back from whatever holiday I was on where I read that book, the rights were already unavailable, having been snatched up by Scott Rudin and Fox Searchlight.”
The story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure and German soldier Werner connecting via radio, providing each other salvation under the devastation of WWII, caught Levy right as he’d made the deliberate decision to take a step back from directing films, and focus on producing. “I had, at that point, directed maybe like nine movies in 11 or 12 years.

Netflix has acquired an erotic thriller spec script “Undying” from writer Ben Ketai, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

Moera Ainai is overseeing the project and Ketai will also serve as executive producer.
“Undying” centers on a woman, suffocated by motherhood, who has an affair with a man she hasn’t seen since high school only to discover a terrifying secret.
Before the sale, Ketai had recently written and directed “River Wild,” a modern adaptation of Universal’s 1994 thriller of the same name. Featuring Leighton Meester, Taran Killam, and Adam Brody, the movie enjoyed several weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 after its release on the platform.

‘All the Light We Cannot See’ panel: A global casting search finds two needles in a haystack [Watch]
People will look at the cast of the epic Netflix limited series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II-themed novel “All the Light We Cannot See” from author Anthony Doerr and finds a few names that catch their eye – specifically Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. They’re big names with decades-long acting pedigrees, after all. But the real stars of the four-parter that premieres in its entirety on November 2 are two females you have never heard of – one a young child, the other a young woman – for whom the series is their introduction to performing: Nell Sutton and Aria Mia Loberti.
The two portray the same role a decade or so apart and are the product of a global casting search for actresses to play the lead character Marie-Laure LeBlanc. As “All the Light We Cannot See” casting director Lucy Bevan told an audience at the DGA Theater in...

Director Shawn Levy and the creative team behind Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See took part in a panel conversation on Tuesday, where they discussed how the project became more timely than they ever imagined.
The show is adapted from the Pulitzer-winning World War II novel by Anthony Doerr, which follows a blind French girl who takes refuge in Saint-Malo after Paris is invaded by Nazi Germany and a German boy who is recruited to join the Nazi army because of his skills in radio technology, also leading him to Saint-Malo.
Levy told the crowd at a Los Angeles special screening that he first read and fell in the love with the book as a fan and had no plans of working on an adaptation, especially because the novel’s rights belonged to someone else at the time, who planned to make it into a film rather than a series.

That summer of 2022, the walled coastal French town of Saint-Malo got a taste of Hollywood, with “Stranger Things” director-executive producer Shawn Levy running up and down the windy beach, fiercely determined to shoot crucial scenes of his World War II-set Netflix series “All the Light We Cannot See.”
It wasn’t over-the-top action that Levy was hyped about, but rather an intimate father-daughter moment portrayed by Mark Ruffalo and newcomer Aria Mia Loberti, who plays Marie-Laure, a courageous blind teenager living in Nazi-occupied France.
Loberti, who is a Ph.D. student in rhetoric at Penn State, was discovered through a worldwide casting call for actors who are blind or visually impaired. In “All the Light We Cannot See,” Marie (as she’s called in the series) crosses paths with Werner (Louis Hofmann), a conflicted young German soldier hired for his radio tech skills, who is willing to challenge orders. Netflix unveiled the full trailer for “All the Light We Cannot See,” its limited series adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, on Tuesday, offering a closer look at the prestige drama.
“Stranger Things” and “Shadow and Bone” executive producer Shawn Levy directed all four episodes of Steven Knight’s teleplay, which follows the stories of Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner (Louis Hoffman) as they intersect during World War II in German-occupied France. Marie-Laure rebels against the Nazis with her nightly broadcasts, while she roams the streets with her walking stick — she is blind — by day. Werner was trained to pick up radio frequencies at the institution where he was inducted into the German armed forces. His affinity for tracing airwaves and soundwaves sets him on a collision course to discover Marie-Laure’s clandestine broadcasts.

From the mind of Stephen King, 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps’ The Boogeyman was unleashed in theaters this past weekend, debuting in the #3 spot on the domestic charts.
Here in the United States, The Boogeyman managed to scare up a $12.3 million debut weekend at the box office, while the film’s current worldwide total is $20 million.
The reported production budget for this latest Stephen King horror movie was $35 million, which means it has to reach roughly $100 million to hit the point of profitability. You may recall that The Boogeyman was originally scheduled to go straight-to-streaming on Hulu, however, so Disney is likely quite happy with the film’s $20 million box office haul this past weekend.

Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman is about a man named Lester Billings, who visits a psychiatrist after his children have been killed by the title character. Director Rob Savage’s version of The Boogeyman, which is in theatres now, goes far beyond the story King wrote – but Lester Billings is in the movie, played by David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad). During an interview with Collider, Dastmalchian revealed that he initially turned down the offer to play Billings because he didn’t want to go as far into the darkness as the character required.
Dastmalchian said, “I read (the script) and I said, ‘Absolutely not. No interest in portraying Lester Billings. I don’t care to go there. I’ve done too much stuff in the darkness. I need a break, and I can’t do it.’ And then (producer Dan Cohen) is many things, a gifted producer, a wonderful human being,...

Vivien Lyra Blair played a child version of the iconic Star Wars character Princess Leia Organa in the six episode Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, and now she has a prominent role in the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, which reaches theatres tomorrow, June 2nd. You shouldn’t expect to see Blair wielding a lightsaber in the film – but during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Rob Savage revealed that her character did carry a lightsaber around in the script… but Star Wars owners Disney didn’t want them to put a lightsaber in the movie.

Last night at the world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse there was a huge sigh of relief from the mass of animators inside Westwood’s Regency Village Theater: the $100M budgeted sequel to the Oscar winning animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was done; having completed post-production literally just ten days ago after a five-year trek to the screen which included a Covid delay due to the backlog in post-production houses. Starting today abroad, and into tomorrow in U.S./Canada, the continuing adventures of Miles Morales will see the light of day in what is expected to be a $150M global opening.
Overseas that’s a projected $60M opening, including $20M from China –which loves Spider-Man (the first animated pic grossed over $62M there)— as well as Belgium, France, Netherlands today; Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, UK tomorrow, and Spain and the Prc on Friday. The first...

If the title feels familiar you would not be wrong. The word “boogeyman” has been the subject of numerous movies all using the same moniker, at least ten on iMDB database before I stopped counting, but all of them dated post 1973 when the horror master Stephen King first published his 8-page short story in a magazine, followed five years later by its inclusion in one of his classic short story collections, “Night Shift”. So in one form or another this now 50 year old tale has become shorthand for lots of Hollywood concoctions that had nothing to do with it, but hey a good title is a good title.
King’s “The Boogeyman” was basically a two hander between a disturbed patient and his therapist who indeed turned out to be his boogeyman. It was actually shot as a short by some entertprising filmmakers in 2012, but clearly there was not enough...

Above all else, The Boogeyman director Rob Savage wanted what every filmmaker longs for when adapting the work of Stephen King: his blessing. Fortunately, Savage received that and a whole lot more.
Based on King’s short story that was first published in 1973, The Boogeyman changes things up by focusing on the Harper family, as Will (Chris Messina), a therapist by trade, won’t connect with his children, Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), in the wake of their mother’s death. The family’s disconnection then opens the door to a mysterious creature that feeds off of grief.
Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman, the horror movie, which was originally meant to be a Hulu release, wowed test audiences before its VFX were even finished, resulting in a theatrical release. Eventually, it even met the approval of King himself during his own screening in Maine.
