On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: After Dark but Make It for Gays of a Certain Age
When I was pressed into service for IndieWire After Dark, I hesitated all of five seconds before I screamed, “What’s the Matter With Helen?” at Ali. Partly because it’s a truly bonkers hagsploitation movie but mostly because I greedily grasp at every excuse to discuss Curtis Harrington’s examination of what the mothers of thrill killers Leopold and Loeb might have done with their lives after their sons’ convictions.

Hugh Jackman broke all our hearts when he revealed that Logan (2017) was going to be his Wolverine’s swan song. But we can’t really blame him, can we? The man had been playing the character since 2000! Perhaps his desire to leave Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men behind stemmed from his time on X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Hugh Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past
While filming Days of Future Past, Hugh Jackman collaborated with actors like Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult, who were much younger than him. Given their age difference, Hugh Jackman felt much older than he actually was and the co-stars’ shenanigans made him come to the conclusion that he was the old man on the set.

Meg Ryan has left an indelible mark on our hearts with her enchanting and endearing rom-com performances. Creators have a new way to sell ad space within their videos. Arthur Leopold and Jonathan Meyers have co-founded Agentio, a matchmaking platform that has raised $4.25 million of seed funding.
Agentio’s flagship platform is live in beta. Influencers like Cody Ko and Nick Digiovanni have already used Agentio to sell ad space on their videos. The platform simplifies connections between sponsored creators and their partners by easily scaling up an ad-buying process that is otherwise time-consuming and labor-intensive.
Both of Agentio’s Co-Founders have extensive experience in advertising and marketing. Leopold was Cameo‘s first hire. As the President of the celebrity shoutout platform, he helped grow it into a multi-million-dollar enterprise. Meyers comes to Agentio after a stint at Spotify, where he led an Automated Content Marketing team that implemented AI-driven solutions.

Director and star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot gets reeled into another whodunnit in A Haunting in Venice. Unlike predecessors Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, the latest Agatha Christie adaptation trades in larger-scaled extravagance for a more intimate location that fully embraces the Baroque moodiness of its Halloween setting. While A Haunting in Venice might offer Poirot’s least engaging mystery yet, it’s offset by Branagh’s firm commitment to a spooky, claustrophobic atmosphere.
Meticulous detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) now lives in Venice, enjoying the retired life in 1947, until an old friend, American novelist Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey), comes calling. Working on her latest book, Ariadne talks Hercule into accompanying her to an All Hallows Eve séance hosted by renowned opera singer Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly). Rowena has enlisted medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh) to contact the spirit of her daughter, who drowned under...

If there’s a prime example of a franchise getting better with every movie, Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie universe is a prime example. Starting in 2017 with the generic “Murder on the Orient Express,” it’s sequel, the 2022 feature “Death on the Nile” was rollicking fun if only for how horny it was in its themes and presentation. But, surprisingly, Branagh followed that up with a dark and somber haunted house story, “A Haunting in Venice” that, if anything, showcases both his impassioned love for Christie’s work and ability to tell a truly spooky film.
Acclaimed detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is in a bit of a slump. It’s 1947 and Poirot spends his days avoiding mysteries and eating cake. But things change when his old friend Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) comes calling, asking Poirot to witness a seance led by psychic medium Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh). Reynolds hopes to...
