The concept of platform exclusivity, once a cornerstone of gaming giants like Xbox and PlayStation, is facing a reckoning in 2024. Xbox’s recent decision to port previous first-party exclusives to competing platforms, and Helldivers 2, Arrowhead’s smash-hit co-op shooter, have become an unlikely symbol of change, sparking a critical conversation about the future of this practice.
Former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, Shawn Layden, recently weighed in on the exclusivity debate, and said that PlayStation may be shooting themselves in the foot.

Former PlayStation Head Shawn Layden gave his two cents about the industry’s greatest weakness and how Helldivers 2 is carrying the platform. The current state of PlayStation hangs on a balance between a successful live-service title shared across a different platform and the lackluster reception and aftermath of their multimillion-dollar triple-a game. There has been a shift within the entertainment industry and Sony is all over the place.
It is evident that Layden’s years of experience validate his sentiments regarding the issue and therefore make him an authority on the topic, his former company is spread too thin and they lose more than they make with their first-party games. The interests of the people are steering towards multiplayer games that are free-to-play but there will always be a demand for strong single-player games, the problem is how to deliver both with high quality and on time.

The year 2024 has turned out to be good for Arrowhead Game Studios with the launch of Helldivers 2. The sequel to the 2015 game has proven to be a massive hit, sharing the limelight with titles like Palworld. The game was released on the PlayStation and PC, and since then players are rushing in to go on the interstellar war.

Xbox players were however missing out on the fun, as the game skipped the platform due to it being a Sony Interactive IP. Despite only being released on PlayStation and PC, the unexpected success of Helldivers 2 has kicked off conversations regarding the changing dynamics in the game industry. Most of the Aaa titles that are being developed nowadays require massive budgets that go as high as a couple of hundred millions, and although they usually belong to popular franchises with pre-established fanbases, they struggle to break even.
This leads to layoffs and studio shutdowns, which is something that became prominent last year and continues in 2024, bringing up an interesting question: Does the industry truly need franchises like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto in this day and age?

An ex-EA boss and former head of PlayStation have pondered whether the cost of exclusive games hardware might spell doom for consoles.
The recent spate of industry layoffs, and the sheer costs involved in making both games and hardware, seems to have left two of videogaming’s big-name executives mulling the future of the humble console.
First up, let’s go over to Peter Moore, who for years was a senior executive at Electronic Arts, and was also head of Xbox at Microsoft for a time. When asked by IGN whether the current generation of consoles might be the last, Moore replied, “I think it’s a real serious question that’s being asked I’m sure in Tokyo, in Redmond, Washington, in Kyoto. That’s what everybody’s working on right now, because when you start off that next generation, you’ve got to be ready to absorb billions of dollars in losses.

The Esa has revealed that E3 2021 will run from June 12 to June 15 as an “all-virtual video game showcase that will be 100 percent free for attendees.” So far, the Esa is touting “early commitments from Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, Konami, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, Warner Bros. Games, and Koch Media” with more possible presenters to come.
Considering that the fate of E3 2021 was very much in doubt after last year’s event was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and companies everywhere hosted their own digital events as the Esa failed to organize the same, this announcement may be more than E3 fans could have hoped for. E3 shouldn’t be an in-person event quite yet, but a digital version of E3 featuring heavy hitters like Nintendo, Capcom, and Microsoft certainly feels like something close to that return to normalcy that so many of us crave.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan noted that the PlayStation team does not currently intend to offer new game releases as a day one addition to their subscription services.
“For us, having a catalogue of games is not something that defines a platform,” says Ryan. “Our pitch, as you’ve heard, is ‘new games, great games.’ We have had this conversation before — we are not going to go down the road of putting new releases titles into a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, well over $100 million, to develop. We just don’t see that as sustainable.”
Ryan goes on to note that part of the team’s hesitation to immediately bring such titles to a subscription service is closely related to their desire to continue to expand the scope of such games.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked about NBA 2K21’s $70 price on next-gen consoles. After many fans raised concerns regarding what this price tag means for future Take-Two games, and even next-gen video games in general, Zelnick was given the chance to better explain this potentially impactful decision and help millions of gamers make peace with that price point.
Instead, Zelnick offered something…a little less reassuring.
“There hasn’t been a price increase for frontline titles for a really long time, despite the fact that it costs a great deal more to make those titles,” Zelnick said of NBA 2K21’s increased price. “And we think with the value we offer consumers…and the kind of experience you can really only have on these next-generation consoles, that the price is justified. Would the PlayStation team really bring some of their games to PC and other platforms?
During an interview with Bloomberg, Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sie Worldwide Studios, shockingly suggested that some PlayStation games could eventually be released on PC and other platforms.
"We must support the PlayStation platform — that is non-negotiable," said Layden. "That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base."
Before anyone loses their mind, let's break this quote down a little further. First off, Bloomberg says the full context of this quote involved a discussion regarding multiplayer games. As such, it seems much more likely that any future PlayStation titles which may find their way to other platforms would be multiplayer games.

"...the demolition derby permits the usage of ballistic projectiles, machine guns, mines, and other types of weapons up to and including satellite-based and nuclear weapons. Players choose a vehicle and an arena to engage in battle with opposing drivers. A variety of weapons and upgrades are obtainable by pick-ups scattered throughout the stage. The last driver alive is the winner..."
PlayStation Productions was formed to select 'PlayStation' game properties best suited for adaptations through Sony Studios, led by Asad Qizilbash, vice president of marketing at PlayStation, overseen by Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman of Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden.

Sony Interactive recently launched PlayStation Productions, a studio tasked with adapting the company’s video game properties into films and television shows, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
PlayStation Productions is headed by Asad Qizilbash and overseen by Sie chairman of Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden. It’s reportedly already working on its first slate of projects on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Calif.
“We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories,” Layden told The Hollywood Reporter. “We feel that now is a good time to look at other media opportunities across streaming or film or television to give our worlds life in another spectrum.”
Sony’s move seems part of a larger trend among video game publishers who are showing more interest in adapting their properties. Nintendo is currently working on a “Super Mario Bros.” animated film with Illumination Entertainment.

Sony is skipping E3 2019. The biggest show of the year will feel a little empty without PlayStation.
As we approach E3 2019, I’ve been thinking a lot about the console wars, which I haven’t been personally invested in since I thought Staind was a deep band (about five years ago), but I’d be lying if I told you that the competition itself isn’t thrilling. Competition tends to bring out the best in its competitors and gamers have traditionally benefited from races between console manufacturers.
It’s why we always spend the weeks following E3 debating about who “won,” even as we remind ourselves that winning such an event is subjective. A company’s presence at E3 has never been about winning the war but rather about celebrating the thrill of the competition itself. So far as that goes, some companies just throw a better party than others.

With Sony and Microsoft both seeming open to change, we ponder what the future of gaming could hold...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Just over a month ago, Sony's PlayStation boss Shawn Layden suggested that the future of gaming could be "kind of a post-console world where you can have quality gaming experiences across a variety of technologies."
"Sure, PS4 and PS4 Pro provide what, of course, we think is the best gaming experience," he added, "but the other consoles out there, be it [Nintendo] Switch, Xbox One X, or tablets, or phones – there are great experiences across all these. What we need to do is recognize all that. We’re not little gaming ghettos that are not federated or aligned at all. We’re all part of the same gaming community, we just come at it through different doorways. I think the future...

A new patent from Sony makes it look like the company's future plans, perhaps for the PS5, include backward compatibility
Sony continues to keep its lips tightly shut with regards to its plans for the PlayStation 5, but a new patent suggests that backward compatibility is something that the company is thinking about. This news, of course, will come as music to the ears of anyone that has a hefty pile of PS4 games that they'd like to play on the PS5 at a hypothetical point in the future.
This story comes at a point in time where the future of console gaming is a nut that has yet to be cracked, at least from a public perspective. Sony's Shawn Layden recently stated that we're living in a "post-console world", and Microsoft has announced its intentions to "think beyond console" in future. But still, a PS5 is in...

Fancy playing tons of Xbox games on your Nintendo Switch? New rumors suggest that could soon be possible.
Here's an interesting one. According to a new report that is circulating around the web, Microsoft could be teaming up with Nintendo to bring the Xbox Game Pass and other Xbox content to the Nintendo Switch console. This, of course, would be a rather unprecedented partnership. The news comes on the heels of another report that Xbox Live could be coming to the Switch.
These rumors do have an air of plausibility to it, though, not least because Sony's PlayStation boss Shawn Layden recently suggested that we're living in "a post-console world" where the gaming community is becoming less divided by console rivalries. If putting the Xbox Game Pass onto the Switch would help Microsoft reach more paying customers, sharing content with a "rival" console may not seem like such a problem.

Online multiplayer is great, but Sony's Shawn Layden thinks it's time to revisit "couch co-op" for families and friends.
Sony's Shawn Layden, the big boss of PlayStation and numerous developers that are working on games for Sony's home console, has been saying a lot of interesting things recently. He's previously stated his belief that we're living in "a post-console world," for example, and now he's talking about what kinds of games he'd like to see more of in future.
"I think all those things we do [story-driven games] really well. What we don’t do so much in is multiplayer," Layden admitted in a new interview with Business Insider. He then went on to talk about local multiplayer as a potential area for expansion.
"Couch co-op – I mean, that’s a whole category I think the industry needs to look back at," he mused. "We have that with...

Sony's PlayStation boss, Shawn Layden, thinks that E3 needs to "transition more into a fan festival" to "maintain its relevance."
Considering that most gamers consider E3's annual event in June to be one of the biggest dates on the calendar, it came as a bit of a shock when Sony announced its intentions - late last year - to drop out of E3 2019 altogether. But now, thanks to an insightful interview by CNET, we know a bit more about what the executives involved in that decision were thinking.
Shawn Layden, the chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios and essentially the big cheese overseeing PlayStation and its development studios, gets rather reflective and candid in the interview. Harking back to his first trips to E3 back in the PS1 era, Layden recalls that, historically, "E3 served two constituencies: retailers and journalists."

Sony calls the PlayStation 3 its "Icarus moment" and reveals how it affected the company.
Sie Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden was coy during a recent Dice 2019 presentation when he said that the shortcomings of the PS3 were a real wakeup call for Sony and the PlayStation team.
"PlayStation 2 was an industry triumph, it remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time," Layden said during a Dice 2019 speech. "But coming off the heels of that, was PlayStation 3: a stark moment of hubris in the nearly 25 years of PlayStation history. As we sometimes call it, PS3 was our Icarus moment."
The hubris that Layden refers to when discussing the PS3 touches on a few things. The biggest, as Layden points out, was the console's "price point" which was a stunning $599 for the console's premium 60 Gb unit. Many fans couldn't believe the PS3 was so expensive at launch,...

In a quote that speaks volumes as to where gaming is going, Sony's Shawn Layden suggests we're beyond the age of console rivalry
One of the biggest topics of discussion among gamers at the moment is what will the next generation of gaming experiences look like? With Nintendo's big boss declaring that there are no current plans for a Switch successor, and both Microsoft and Sony keeping their cards relatively close to their chests with regards to future plans, it's genuinely hard to predict how - and on what devices - we'll be playing games in a few years.
We don't, for instance, know when to expect a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Two (or whatever they end up being called). We also don't know if the traditional and tangible boxy consoles that live next to your telly will go the same way as the VHS...

After years of speculation, MediEvil is finally getting a remake.
Sony has finally revealed the release date for the MediEvil remake. Those looking forward to playing the game won't have to wait too long as Sir Dan will return on October 25, just in time for Halloween.
Based on information shared via the PlayStation blog, this new title is a full remake of the 1998 original. However, Shawn Layden says that it will re-tell the same basic story of the first game in the series.
"MediEvil follows the story of Sir Dan, an unlikely champion who met an unfortunate end on the field of battle," says Layden. "He receives a chance at redemption when his nemesis, the evil sorcerer Lord Zarok, accidentally resurrects him 100 years after that fateful day. Lord Zarok seeks to conquer the Kingdom of Gallowmere, and only the skeletal Sir Dan stands between Zarok’s army...

There won’t be cross-play in the upcoming online role-playing game “Fallout 76,” and Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard blames a familiar culprit: Sony.

Sony is under a lot of pressure right now thanks to the lack of cross-platform multiplayer on its PlayStation 4 console. Competitors Microsoft and Nintendo are allowing it in certain titles like “Fortnite,” “Rocket League,” and “Minecraft,” but Sony refuses to participate.

Sony is “looking at a lot of the possibilities” when it comes to crossplay on the PlayStation 4. At least, that’s what president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden recently told Eurogamer at the Gamelab conference in Spain.

Amd designed its Navi graphics architecture (Gpu) specifically for use in the PlayStation 5, according to “industry sources” who spoke to Forbes.
The anonymous source also said that the next generation console will use Amd’s Zen, the Cpu used in Ryzen brand gaming desktops.
Not much is known about the Amd’s Navi, but it will use the 7nm process and is rumored to be created for use in the PlayStation 5. According to the source, two-thirds of the staff working on the Radeon Rx Vega and other projects were diverted to work on the Navi instead, resulting in a Rx Vega launch that Raja Koduri, head of Radeon Technologies Group, was quite displeased with, according to Forbes.

If you've been desperate to change your Psn name, you might be in luck.....in about a year.
Some of us have had the same Psn name since the PS3 first released years ago. Ever since there have been countless users that have regretted that decision as they got older, or their tastes have changed. Basically we just want to change our stinkin PlayStation name like our friends on Xbox have been able to do, and we might be in luck.
Shawn Layden replied to a question regarding just that during Psx by stating: "The elves at the North Pole have been working on it."
He went on to state that the process is more complex that expected, but the developers have been working hard on making it function. He noted also that it could happen before next years Psx event. I hope we'll see events occur that you won't...

Sony's latest exclusive is selling at groundbreaking numbers, and a new expansion is on the way! Find out more after the jump.
Sony announced today that Horizon: Zero Dawn, their latest exclusive for PS4, has sold 2.6 million units in the first two weeks it has been on the market. This number, according to Sony, is product "sold through to consumers" via retail and digital platforms.
This is the biggest new IP exclusive for PS4 so far, and the biggest release for Guerrilla Games. Gg made the Killzone series so it seems even those games have been topped.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shawn Layden said in a statement, "Guerrilla has created a game that is nothing short of exceptional, and the reaction we have seen from fans--from hours and hours of gameplay streaming to endless photo sharing--shows just how impactful it has been."

Horizon Zero Dawn has hit the ground running, make no mistake about it. A fortnight on from the release of Guerrilla’s bold new IP and Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that worldwide sales of the PlayStation 4 exclusive topped 2.6 million units during its first two weeks on the market. That impressive tally accounts for physical and digital sales, too.
It is, according to Sie, the “best-selling new first-party IP launch” on PlayStation 4 to date and Guerrilla’s biggest ever debut, but the developer has no plans to rest on its laurels. Reflecting on today’s announcement, Guerrilla’s Managing Director Hermen Hulst noted that the Dutch studio is “hard at work on an expansion to the story.”
First up, Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sie Worldwide Studios, showered praise on both Horizon Zero Dawn and the “exceptional” vision behind it.

If the beginning of Joel and Ellie’s story centered on a heartfelt friendship – one forged in the midst of a brutal, kill-or-be-killed world – then The Last of Us Part II will involve a story about hate.
That’s according to developer Naughty Dog, who offered up some tantalizing new details regarding the PS4 sequel at the ongoing PlayStation Experience event in Anaheim, where the original, show-stopping reveal took place.
It’s “super early” in development, according to Sony’s Shawn Layden, but we do know that The Last of Us Part II picks up a few years after the events of the original, at a time when Ashley Johnson’s Ellie is 19-years-old. She’s been put through the wringer, judging by the sombre trailer above – “she’s gone through some shit,” teased Game Director Neil Druckmann – and one big question going into the follow-up is how Joel’s...

Naughty Dog kicked off PlayStation Experience 2016 with a stunner, but it was how they closed the show that really got people talking. Despite being very early in development, Shawn Layden took to the stage to officially debut The Last Of Us: Part II.
Picking up in the aftermath of the original masterpiece, The Last of Us: Part II reunites us with Joel and Ellie. Opening with shots of dense foliage, and then a glimpse of The Fireflies logo, the footage is cloaked in mystery. From there, we hear Ellie strumming away on a guitar while singing a haunting song. Finally, we see Joel enter the room to talk the very pissed off young woman.
It’ll be interesting to see how Part II carries on following the conclusion of The Last Of Us. That controversial ending definitely left open several juicy story threads that Naughty Dog will be sure to...

We knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make the debut of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite any less exciting. Sie Worldwide Chairman Shawn Layden knew this, which is why he wasted little time unveiling the sequel at PlayStation Experience 2016 earlier today.
The cinematic trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite focuses on a duel between favorites from both sides. Capcom classics Ryu and Mega Man head into battle with Marvel superstars Iron Man and Captain Marvel over what appears to be Infinity Stones. This would follow the rumored theory that the game would borrow heavily from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Following the debut of the trailer, Sony detailed exactly what will be packaged with the sequel, and you can check it out below:
Reborn Rivalries: Universes collide once again in this all-new crossover clash for the ages, where players select their favorite Marvel and Capcom characters and engage in accessible and action-packed 2v2 partner battles.
