When director Aaron Truss got in touch regarding checking out his latest film, the short Pareidolia, I jumped in feet first with a resounding yes. Why? Well, Truss had produced a great documentary on the VHS era, Cult of VHS, and this short film starred one of my all-time favourite actresses Diane Franklin… a performer whose roles in Better Off Dead, The Last American Virgin and later Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure had, I’m sure, shaped my idea of the perfect girlfriend and whose roles in Summer Girl and Amityville 2 stirred something in my teenage libido too!
For those unfamiliar with the term, Pareidolia is the scientific term for seeing meaningful images in random visual patterns. It’s what the Rorschach inkblot test is based on,...

British historian David Starkey made an appearance on a pre-Coronation broadcast on Gb News Thursday, where he claimed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not sufficiently “grounded” in British culture.
The disgraced historian made the claim after host Andrew Pierce appeared to suggest that Coronation efforts from the British government have been muted.
“The prime minister now has been, in my mind, detached or at least semi-detached, from this Coronation,” Pierce said.
In response, Starkey said: “I think one of the reasons that I think a lot has gone wrong, for example, why parliament has not been properly represented at the coronation of a parliamentary monarchy, is because the government isn’t interested in the constitution.”
Starkey continued to say that what he was claiming was a “difficult and controversial” topic, but he believes it is true, after adding: “The prime minister, the man of immense power, of extraordinary skill, but really,...

Joe Lycett has opened up about his penchant for high-profile PR stunts, explaining that he feels “pressure” from his mental health to stop doing them.
In recent years, the comedian has built a reputation for orchestrating news-worthy stunts.
The most notorious of these was his ultimatum to David Beckham last year in which he threatened to shred £10,000 in cash unless the ex-footballer renounced his World Cup ambassador contract with Qatar over the country’s LGBT+ human rights abuses.
After Beckham neglected to respond, Lycett posted a video of himself shredding what appeared to be the cash – only to later reveal that he had in fact donated the money to LGBT+ charities.
Speaking to Radio Times in a new interview, Lycett said: “It’s much easier for me, actually, if I’m not trending and I’m not in the paper because I live a much happier, quieter life. And so if anything,...

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield cracked up laughing at a photo posted by Grant Shapps that appears to have airbrushed out Boris Johnson.
Posting on Twitter this week, business secretary Shapps shared an image showing him and two officials in front of a Virgin rocket at the spaceport in Newquay, Cornwall.
However, eagle-eyed Twitter users noticed that the former prime minister had featured in the original photo, which was taken in June 2021, but appeared to have been photoshopped out of the image.
Shapps has since deleted the tweet, with a source telling The Guardian that he hadn’t been aware the image had been edited when he posted it.
“Obviously he wouldn’t endorse anyone rewriting history by removing the former Pm from a picture,” they said, adding that Shapps was “proud to serve in Boris’s government”.

The UK has officially fallen into a recession, which will push more than 500,000 people into unemployment, according to a new forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (Obr).
The (Obr), the government’s forecaster, said there will be the biggest fall in living standards in the UK since records began with inflation “tipping the economy into a recession lasting just over a year.”
The forecaster said that it expects household incomes, once adjusted for inflation, to fall back to 2013 levels and will take at least six years to recover.
The UK has been suffering economically due to Brexit, the fallout from the pandemic, an ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine and the disastrous fiscal policies of the previous Conservative government.
UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt, in his inaugural Autumn Statement, today set out a string of tax increases and a tighter public spending plan that he said would generate a combined £55bn.

New U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could drop plans to privatize public service broadcaster Channel 4, according to a report in the Financial Times.
“The decision to drop the sale of Channel 4 from the media bill has been signalled by Downing Street to industry and Whitehall,” the report said. The privatization plan had been floated during the tenure of Sunak’s predecessor Boris Johnson and carried forward by then Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries.
Sunak had “privately been sceptical of the case for prioritizing the Channel 4 privatization while he was chancellor,” the report said. However, during Sunak’s summer leadership campaign after the ouster of Johnson, after which Liz Truss briefly became Prime Minister, Sunak had supported privatization.
“Privatization will help Channel 4 to thrive in an age where they are also competing with Netflix, Amazon, Apple and many more — standing still is not an option,” Sunak’s spokesperson had said at the time.

Controversial plans to privatize Channel 4 are set to be dropped as British Pm Rishi Sunak reassesses campaign and policy pledges made by his past two predecessors and gears up to set his own legislative agenda, according to new reports.
Sunak’s office has signaled his decision to scrap the sale of Channel 4 to industry heads and throughout Whitehall, the Ft reported Friday morning. The sale is expected to be dropped from the upcoming media bill.
The plans to sell Channel 4 were initially drawn up under Boris Johnson. The public service broadcaster is owned by the state but self-funded through advertising.
Rishi Sunak had previously backed the decision during his failed campaign to become Conservative party leader earlier this summer, arguing that the channel needed a commercial owner to help it compete with streamers like Netflix. However, The Ft reports that Sunak had been privately skeptical of the case for selling Channel 4.

When it was put to him that Truss’s personal phone could have been at the centre of the breach, Spencer said that “some little man in China” could be listening into his own private conversations.
“We all talk on personal phones, don’t we?” he said. “I ring my wife, maybe there’s some little man in China listening to the conversations between me and my wife.”
The remark has been widely criticised by figures including Labour politicians and others.
O’Brien, who hosts a daily talk show on Lbc, delivered a damning assessment on Twitter.

John Oliver kicked off Sunday’s Last Week Tonight by noting it had been a busy week, “from massive protests still ongoing in Iran to the fact that Tom Brady suddenly has one less ring.”
The HBO host’s jab at Tom Brady was a reference to both his divorce from Gisele Bundchen and his seven Super Bowl rings.
After that remark, Oliver moved on to the turnover in the United Kingdom’s prime ministership. Oliver pointed to the fact that former Liz Truss was in the job for only 45 days, during which time the tabloid newspaper Daily Star had created a stunt asking which would last longer — Truss or a head of iceberg lettuce. After Truss resigned, a photo of the head of lettuce was projected on the outside walls of Parliament.

Liz Truss is being ridiculed not just in the UK but also in the US after she became the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.
Truss handed in her resignation to King Charles last week after just 45 days in office, paving the way for Rishi Sunak to become the first UK prime minister of colour.
US talk show host Stephen Colbert took aim at the former Tory leader during his opening monologue on The Late Late Show.
Noting that Sunak is Britain’s first prime minister of South Asian descent and its first Hindu prime minister, Colbert joked: “Britons will be able to run their entire power grid off the turbines connected to Queen Victoria spinning in her grave.”
On Truss’s record-breakingly short term in office, Colbert said: “That’s not a term in office, that’s a juice cleanse.”
He then offered a “compilation” of Truss’s highlights as prime minister,...

Rishi Sunak became Britain’s third prime minister this year on Tuesday, tasked with taming an economic crisis that has left the country’s finances in a precarious state and millions struggling to pay their food and energy bills.
Sunak, who is the U.K.’s first leader of colour, met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where the monarch officially asked the new leader of the governing Conservative Party to form a government, as is tradition.
Sunak clinched the leadership position Monday, seen by his party as a safe pair of hands it hopes will stabilize an economy sliding toward recession — and stem its own plunging popularity, after the brief, disastrous term of Liz Truss.
Her package of unfunded tax cuts spooked financial markets with the prospect of ballooning debt, drove the pound to record lows and forced the Bank of England to intervene — weakening Britain’s fragile economy and...

Kaiser Chiefs’ “I Predict a Riot” could be heard playing throughout both Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss’ speeches outside Downing Street today (Tuesday 25 October).
People tuning into watch the live broadcast first clocked the song playing in the background of Liz Truss’s farewell speech. The ex Tory prime minister delivered her address before officially tendering her resignation to King Charles.
The song was then heard again playing during Sunak’s first address to the nation as its new prime minister.
The Metro credited the stunt to anti-Brexit activist Steve Bray, who previously blasted the Benny Hill chase theme during Boris Johnson’s resignation speech.
Online, viewers have been reacting to hearing the song with glee.

Incoming British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has promised to unite the country “not with words but with actions” and said “mistakes were made” during the disastrous 44-day reign of his now-predecessor Liz Truss.
In the past hour, the former Chancellor-now-pm has headed to Buckingham Palace where he was officially sworn in by King Charles III, following an incredibly dramatic chain of events after he initially lost the Conservative Party leadership vote to Truss over the summer. Truss resigned in disgrace last week following a failed economic plan that completely spooked the markets.
Speaking outside his new 10 Downing Street home today, Sunak said he will unite the country “not with words but with actions,” adding that he “has work to do to restore trust after all that has happened.” Truss’ resignation came just three months after Boris Johnson was also forced to resign over Partygate and a series of scandals.

This is due to the channel putting on an ITV News Special instead, which will focus on a briefing from newly appointed prime minister, Rishi Sunak.

BBC presenter Martine Croxall has been taken off air by the BBC after her “gleeful” reaction to the news that Boris Johnson was pulling out of the Conservative leadership race, according to reports.
The broadcaster was leading the BBC News channel’s review of the newspapers, The Papers, a few minutes after Johnson quit the race on Sunday (23 October), and she introduced viewers to the show with the words: “Am I allowed to be this gleeful? Well, I am!”
According to a report in The Telegraph, BBC bosses have now taken Croxall off air for an undefined amount of time.
A spokesman told the publication: “BBC News is urgently reviewing last night’s edition of The Papers on the News channel for a potential breach of impartiality.
“It is imperative that we maintain the highest editorial standards.”
The statement added: “We have processes in place to uphold our standards, and these processes have been activated.

Rishi Sunak is to become the UK’s next Prime Minister, the third in three months.
The news was confirmed minutes ago, as the former Chancellor of the Exchequer became the only Conservative politician to draw the support of 100 or more party MPs and qualify to run for the country’s top political job, following the resignation of Liz Truss. Sunak was nominated by 193 MPs.
Penny Mourdant, the only other MP to seek office, was unable to hit the support threshold, making Sunak the de facto winner.
Sunak becomes the first Person of Colour to lead the UK.
Sunak will replace Truss later this week. She unceremoniously resigned last week after a disastrous spell as Pm, during which the pound crashed and she was forced to almost completely backtrack on her economic plans against a chorus of disapproval. Truss is by far and away the shortest serving UK Prime Minister in history.

A lettuce wearing a wig has provided much relief for UK people exhausted by the ongoing chaos at the heart of government.
As the nation watched the government in freefall and bet on how many days or hours it would be until the prime minister Liz Truss announced her resignation, one tireless tabloid came up with the novel idea of filming a livestream of an iceberg lettuce to see which one of the two would last longer.
To be thorough, the lettuce was named Lizzy and given a blonde wig.
Word spread as 20,000 tuned in to YouTube watch the live-feed of the lettuce, which was still going strong when Truss stepped out on Thursday afternoon to tell the waiting press that she had indeed spoken to the king and was stepping down as party leader – bringing to an end a record-breakingly short tenure as the United Kingdom prime minister.

Liz Truss was the butt — or perhaps, vegetable head — of many jokes from Trevor Noah on Thursday night, after she resigned from her role as Britain’s Prime Minister less than two months after taking the job. As “The Daily Show” host put it, she didn’t even last as long as parties thrown by her predecessor.
Truss resigned on Thursday morning, just 44 days after taking office following the resignation of Boris Johnson. Johnson left his post after intense pressure to do so, based on his handling of Covid in the country, and going against his own guidelines regarding social distancing during the pandemic.
Noah couldn’t help but compare Johnson’s alleged parties to Truss’ reign.

Ricky Gervais has joked about running for prime minister following the resignation of Liz Truss.
Truss announced on Wednesday (20 October) that she was stepping down from the leadership position, marking the shortest-serving prime minister in the country’s history.

BBC Two and Channel 4 have delighted viewers with their inspired soundtrack choices for reports on Prime Minister Liz Truss’s resignation.
The opening credits to Newsnight on Thursday (20 October) were a montage of Truss’s highlights and lowlights set to the soundtrack of Rihanna’s “Take a Bow”, which includes lyrics from “you look so dumb right now” to “don’t tell me you’re sorry ’cause you’re not”.
The song’s lyrics were matched impeccably with moments from Truss’s short-lived premiership.
Channel 4 News, meanwhile, played Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” alongside clips of Truss – a self-proclaimed fan of Swift’s music.
“You look like my next mistake,” Swift can be heard singing, alongside a clip of Tory politicians applauding Truss.
Viewers found the music choices hilarious. “Absolutely Dying at @BBCNewsnight’s opening tonight!” tweeted one person. “Move over Channel 4…”

Piers Morgan has hit out at calls for Boris Johnson to return as prime minister following the resignation of Liz Truss.
Johnson’s tenure as prime minister came to an end in September following a number of high-profile scandals and sinking approval ratings.
However, after Truss announced her resignation on Thursday (20 October) – becoming the shortest-lived prime minister in British history – the possibility of Johnson returning to the post has been discussed.

I arrived late, so I had to stand at the back while all these rather intense Hollywood women were listening to Ronan Farrow [the journalist] talk about the work he had done [exposing the sexual misconduct of Harvey Weinstein]. Then it finished.”
He continued: “Everyone turned around and immediately took out their devices and started filming me,...

During a breaking political news story, I usually watch both BBC News and Sky News on two different screens, just so I don’t miss anything. This week, like many others, I added a third channel: a livestream of a lettuce.
After Prime Minister Liz Truss’ hard-line policies plunged the economy and her political party into turmoil, the Economist published an eviscerating column about her time so far in office, saying that she “has the shelf-life of a lettuce.”
So, the British tabloid Daily Star then decided to put this theory into action. They bought a lettuce, attached some googly eyes, placed it next to a framed photo of the Pm and published a livestream. “Can Liz Truss outlast this lettuce?” the publication asked readers.
It was a joke that, as you can imagine, set Twitter alight. But it also felt like something that would not Romaine long in the public consciousness (I’m sorry.

Comedians Ricky Gervais, Nish Kumar and David Baddiel are among the celebrities to lead reactions to Liz Truss’s resignation after just six weeks as prime minister.
In a speech outside Downing Street on Thursday 20 October, Truss announced that her replacement would be found within the next week, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.
The politician’s resignation came after 15 Tory MPs publicly called for her to step down, following a chaotic six weeks that included a disastrous mini-budget, the firing of former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and the resignation of former home secretary Suella Braverman.
Reacting to the news, Gervais shared a picture of himself making a speech outside No 10, with the caption: “And it wouldn’t even be in the top 10 weirdest news stories of the year.”
Piers Morgan tweeted: “What an absolute shambles.”
Comedian Baddiel posted: “That speech contained the words ‘to take advantage of...

On Thursday, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her intention to resign as leader of the Conservative Party, with a leadership election set for next week.
Truss’ exit was swift — she served as Pm for 44 days, 10 of which were dedicated to public mourning for Queen Elizabeth II — but the decision was unsurprising to many, including Scottish satirist and writer Armando Iannucci, who appeared to respond to the news on Twitter by immediately posting a scene from his television series “The Thick of It.”

“The Thick of It,” which began in 2005 and ran until 2012 (four series and two specials for a total of 23 episodes), was a brutal satire of the British government, focusing on the employees of the fictional Department of Social Affairs as they contend with constant media controversies and power plays. The clip Iannucci shared comes from the third series,...

Taylor Swift’s most ardent fans often seek hidden meanings and uncanny coincidences in the prolific American singer’s albums.
In the wake of the resignation of Liz Truss – possibly the most high-ranking goverment official among Swift’s declared listeners – they’ve also become shrewd readers of the political tea leaves.
On social media, Swifties have noticed that the timing of beseiged UK prime minister Truss’s resignation, which her opponents have been calling for since the September unveiling of her mini-budget, just so happens to coincide with the release of Swift’s newest studio album, Midnights.
“Liz Truss has just resigned so she can listen to midnights in full tomorrow without the pressure of being prime minister. The true Swiftie,” joked one fan on Twitter.
Another kiddingly admired Truss’s commitment to Swift’s music: “Damn, I know Liz Truss is a Swiftie, but you didn’t need to resign to listen to Midnights.

Liz Truss resigned from her position as Prime Minister on October 20, making her 44-day tenure the shortest in history.” 528 times.) But as any true pop culture fanatic knows, six weeks can be an eon in terms of TV. That’s how long it took for the second season of “Fleabag” to air!
Of course, not all shows are able to hang on as long as Truss did — with the notable exception of “Joey”; at least Truss is leaving with a shred of dignity intact. While the political pundits discuss what will happen now, let’s take a look at six infamously short-lived series that got pulled before Truss did.
1. “Emily’s Reason’s Why Not”
Length of Run: 1 week
Poor Heather Graham. This rom-com about a self-help book editor struggling with her dating life aired exactly one episode in 2006. Maybe Truss herself compiled a list of reasons she should not remain in power.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has ferociously condemned the Tory government, following Liz Truss’s resignation after just six weeks as prime minister.
On Thursday 20 October, Truss resigned as leader, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.
Truss’s resignation came after 15 Tory MPs publicly called for her to step down, following six weeks that included a mini-budget that caused the pound’s value to plummet, the firing of former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and the resignation of former home secretary Suella Braverman just yesterday (19 October).
The new prime minister will be announced in the next week.
Reacting to the news, Yorke tweeted: “Bring down this UK government, they do not speak for us, right the f*** now… they have no authority, no mandate, no clue, cats in a bag tearing themselves to pieces while the country suffers in extreme distress. Enough of this s***. Shame on them.”

Former UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has been strong criticized by a British government report over her claims a Channel 4 documentary used actors.
The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee’s special report into Dorries’ comments about fakery in reality show Tower Block of Commons considered why she had not reconsidered evidence provided at a previous political committee that she could not prove.
The report today published scathing findings that suggest she had used the situation “to traduce the reputation of Channel 4.”
Dorries, who was replaced as Culture Secretary last month as Liz Truss became Prime Minister, is a long-time critic of Channel 4 and advocated selling the government-owned broadcaster into private hands. However, she herself had appeared in the program.
In a statement today, Dcms Committee Chair Julian Knight MP said: “We recognise that those giving evidence will occasionally make mistakes, but it is vitally important for the integrity...
