Filled with wonderful musical performances exploring the 30-year career of Luther Vandross, Dawn Porter’s sweeping biographical documentary Luther: Never Too Much interweaves archival materials and new interviews in a manner that is effective at telling the story but somehow feels a little too distant from its subject. In particular, the selection of archival materials of Vandross, who passed away in 2005 at age 54, and the film’s later chapters divulging personal struggles with health and weight along with speculation about his sexuality, keep the viewer at arm’s length. Perhaps this is somewhat by design, a case of the film’s subject not speaking out, as some speculate for fear of alienating his female fans and perhaps his record label.
A barrier-breaking artist in many respects, Vandross grew up in the projects of the Bronx before becoming a seminal recording artist working as a background vocalist, producer, and later a...

Nile Rodgers and Chic brought the “maximum funkocity” to Nrp’s Tiny Desk, delivering a half-hour set of classics from both the Chic catalogue and songs co-written by Rodgers himself.
The set opened with Chic’s “Le Freak,” and from there went on to feature Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out, Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (all co-written by Rodgers), Chic’s own “Good Times” interpolated with the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” and concluded with the David Bowie/Rodgers collabo “Let’s Dance.

The music world has lost a true icon: Anita Lane, the Bad Seed who helped redefine the spirit of evil in rock & roll. “Once there came a storm in the form of a girl,” Nick Cave famously sang, and for many fans, Anita Lane was that storm. She was a key Cave collaborator, but also an artist and cult figure in her own right, with solo gems like Dirty Pearl and Sex O’Clock. The first track from the forthcoming “Coming 2 America” soundtrack is “I’m A King,” an original song by Grammy-nominated rappers Bobby Sessions and Megan Thee Stallion. It premieres tomorrow (Feb. 5).
“From watching Coming to America as a kid in Pleasant Grove to being apart of the #Coming2America trailer!! Manifestation is Real,” Sessions wrote in a tweet.
The track comes ahead of the full “Coming 2 America” soundtrack, set to release on March 5. The full track list has yet to be revealed, though it will play a major role in the film like in the original. The 1988 comedy favorite was fueled by music from the likes of Cover Girls, Chico DeBarge, Mel and Kim and Sister Sledge. The titular song, co-written by Nile Rodgers and performed by synth pop duo The System, charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Coming 2 America” debuts on Amazon Prime Video the same day as its soundtrack.

, “Military Wives” isn’t just the kind of movie that ends with Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” it’s the kind of movie that ends with the entire cast singing along. Steered right down the middle by “Full Monty” director Peter Cattaneo, this semi-factual charmer tells the true enough story of some British army spouses who learn to sing through their sorrows.
Kristin Scott Thomas belts out Yaz, Sharon Horgan lectures her about blowjobs, and it all ends with an unfussy but satisfying public concert that tugs on your heartstrings and ties the whole film together. Cattaneo’s tone is too flat (and sobering) for this to become a genuine crowd-pleaser, and Rosanne Flynn and Rachel Tunnard’s script is too buoyantly functional for it to seriously reckon with the subject at hand, but “Military Wives” hits enough right notes along the way to make up for its overall lack of harmony.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Kah-Lo has had success with conversational club music, but she understands why listeners tend to lump her songs in with afrobeats: That minimal, swaying, polyrhythmic strain of pop that’s become an “explosive industry” in her country and hit the charts in London, Paris and elsewhere. “It is great for the people who are making afrobeats,” she says. “But there are other genres that other people are making, and they’re not being given as much of a platform. I’m hoping to change that narrative.”

Few artists deserves as much credit as Robyn for marrying the sciences of 21st century pop and club music; her records are precisely calibrated verse-chorus-verse hook-fests that erupt into brief moments of ego-dissolving dancefloor bliss. Her songs can feel intensely intimate – vulnerable, melancholy, lonely, despondent – which makes their yin-yang even more striking.
On her first album in eight years, taking a more active hand on the production side after what seems to have been a period of painful personal change, Robyn relaxes the tempos and lets the healing ecstasy of club grooves take over.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
There’s nothing quite like an outside threat to bring a family together, especially when that threat is of the undead variety. Siblings may not always get along, but when your sister’s soul is sought by a coven of witches, or when your mom is eyed as an eternal bride by a coffin-dwelling creep, it’s time to take those Sister Sledge lyrics to heart and become a family that can overcome anything—including wicked spells and sharp fangs. Set on respective fateful nights where the future of a homestead hangs in the balance and its up to siblings to save it, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire and Hocus Pocus are family-friendly films that make for a great double feature during the Halloween season.
Perhaps the less-known of the two films, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire will likely ring a nostalgic bell for...

We return with a look at Soul Power, enjoy!
From Masters of Cinema:
Soul Power is a vérité documentary – compiled entirely from footage shot in 1974 – of the astonishing back-to-Africa 3-day music festival “Zaire ‘74”. It was held in Kinshasa ahead of the biggest boxing event of all time: the Muhammad Ali–George Foreman “Rumble in the Jungle”. Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, editor of Leon Gast’s Oscar®-winning (Best Documentary) When We Were Kings, and sourced from the same archival pool, Soul Power features a legendary line-up of African and African-diaspora musicians – all of whom are at the very peak of their creative powers.
Alongside Ali’s wit and wisdom – profoundly lyrical in its own right – vibrant street scenes of downtown Kinshasa, and “fly-on-the-wall” footage of the festival’s staging, rehearsals, and jams, the three nights of concerts (lensed by Albert Maysles and a host of other legendary cameramen) offer electrifying performances by James Brown,...

A year after it tried to live up to an unfathomable and unfair wave of hype that crowned it the "gay" "Girls," HBO's "Looking" returned for its second season Sunday night. The series began by introducing us to three "almost" best friends, Patrick (Jonathan Groff), Augustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Dom (Murray Bartlett) and then almost immediately sent them their separate ways for most of the first eight episodes. Augustin moved out of his apartment to be with his then boyfriend Frankie (O.T. Fagbenle), Dom seemed to mostly hang out with his own roommate, Doris (Lauren Weedman), and Patrick pretty much became the center of the show. Not what most people expected based on the TV spots and outdoor ads. Series creator Michael Lannan and co-executive producer Andrew Haigh weaved some intriguing character arcs over the first season, but faced criticism from reviewers and viewers who, frankly, wanted the show...

Nile Rodgers was once a household name thanks to the mainstream success of his iconic disco group Chic and their multi-million-selling smashes "Le Freak" and "Good Times." When disco died, Rodgers didn't go away but simply stepped behind the curtain, helping shape classic albums by everyone from old Madonna to new Daft Punk.
In between, he produced hits for Diana Ross, David Bowie, B-52s, Duran Duran, Carly Simon, Sister Sledge, and the list goes all the way up to Swedish Edm star Avicii's upcoming album. But Rodgers work on Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" album – including its song-of-the-summer "Get Lucky" and just-released follow-up single "Lose Yourself To Dance" – has got the producer's career once again partying like it's 1979.

The 1974 Zaire concert became a powerful documentary: its producers recall three magical days
Stewart Levine, festival promoter
I had been making records with Hugh Masekela since the early 1960s. We'd got this African-American hybrid going, and were always looking for ways to get more western exposure to African music: it really was the dark ages in awareness terms. When I saw George Foreman was fighting Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight boxing title in Zaire in 1974, my mind went boom: let's do a music festival and a film.
Hugh and I weren't just into soul, and we cast our net wide. We had the Fania All-Stars with Celia Cruz, and Miriam Makeba, as well as Bb King, James Brown, Bill Withers and the Spinners. The Spinners' manager was this funny little cat out of Philadelphia, a real sweetheart, and he said to me: "I've three girls who are gonna be great.

Only three films into her career, Mia Hansen-Løve has established herself as one of the more exciting names in world cinema. Her debut, "Tout est pardonné," was named the Best First Film at the César awards when she was only 27, and her next, the excellent "The Father Of My Children," put her on the world stage, something firmed up by her most recent picture, the touching, beautiful "Goodbye, First Love." And with husband Olivier Assayas, she makes up one half of a helluva talented filmmaker marriage.
With "Goodbye, First Love" now rollling out around the world, the director's starting to reveal what her next project might be, and it sounds pretty exciting. In an interview with The Observer, Hansen-Løve tells Jason Solomons that her next film will be an epic romance set against the backdrop of the French music scene of the 1990s, which spawned artists like Daft Punk and Mr. Oizo.

The French director talks about the teenage love affair that led her to make films, and the thrill of discovering a new star actress
Your forthcoming film, Goodbye First Love, is about teenage romance. What were you like as a teenager?
Love was everything to me. My parents were both philosophy teachers, so I was brought up to value it more than money or possessions. It was all about beauty, truth, freedom and love. I did have a big, very real, very powerful relationship with someone from when I was 15 till 19. I thought he would be the only one I could ever love, and when it was gone it left a void in me. I think I've tried to turn that void into some kind of creativity ever since, using the sadness to do something poetic.
Love is universal as a topic for a film. I mean, everyone has a...

After 13 years on the sidelines, director Whit Stillman is back with Damsels in Distress. Here, he talks about his film-making torment – and reveals why is he looking so ghastly
Whit Stillman stands out on the hotel terrace like the ghost of independent American cinema, a pale apparition amid the hucksters and high-rollers at the neighbouring tables. His eyes are bloodshot, his stomach in uproar, and his complexion is barely two shades more ruddy than his pristine white shirt. The director is sick; he can't stay the course. No sooner have we shaken hands and taken our seats than he's up again, gently excusing himself before bolting for the washroom. It is at this point that I fear we have lost him for good.
Once, long ago, Stillman found himself briefly billed as the next great American auteur; the creator of dry, literate bourgeois comedies that idled on the edge of...

Over the last few months, the music industry has been rocked by multiple lawsuits alleging that artists such as Kenny Rogers, Sister Sledge, Rob Zombie and others have been cheated out of substantial money from the improper calculation of revenues from digital music. The plaintiffs in these cases assert that the music giants have been wrongfully treating digital music purchases as "sales" rather than "licenses," and thus only sharing 10-20 percent of revenue instead of a near 50-50 split they believe is owed. Let's assume the plaintiffs are right. What comes next? Do record labels have any

Australian music festival Rewind has been cancelled. Fans were recently outraged when organisers of the '80s-themed event relocated the festival from Woolongong to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, blaming predicted bad weather, but inside sources have claimed that poor ticket sales prompted the move. Organisers have now revealed, however, that the event will not go ahead and all those due to attend will get their money back. A message on the festival's official website read: "Rewind [is] cancelled. Please contact your ticket agent for a refund." A full statement from organisers is expected to follow in due course. All posts on the festival's official Facebook page have also been cleared. The festival dropped headline acts Human League, Sister Sledge and Kool and the Gang from the lineup last week without warning, refusing to refund any tickets (more)...

The Brontës are often dismissed as up-market Mills & Boon. But with the release of two films this autumn, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, they look set to rival even Jane Austen in the public's affections
Ours is supposed to be the age of instantaneity, where books can be downloaded in a few seconds and reputations created overnight. But the Victorians could be speedy, too, and there's no more striking example of instant celebrity than Jane Eyre. Charlotte Brontë posted the manuscript to Messrs Smith and Elder on 24 August 1847, two weeks after the publisher had expressed an interest in seeing her new novel while turning down her first. Within a fortnight, a deal had been struck (Charlotte was paid £100) and proofs were being worked on. In the 21st century a first novel can wait two years between acceptance and publication. Jane Eyre was out in eight weeks, on 17 October, with Thackeray...

Hello. My name is John Bensalhia and I'm a freelance journalist. There, that should leave you hurling abuse and running for the hills.
Let's face it, journalists don't really have a very good press – they're a rung or two above bankers, accountants, Inland Revenue staff and parking ticket inspectors, but there's still a stench of doubt whenever you mention the word journalist, which I think is massively unfair - but then I would say that. But then, given some of the more sensationalist members of the media, maybe those sneers aren't as misplaced as you may think.
The new reboot of Doctor Who's proving to be particularly good at targeting modern day trends, whether they're the superficial lifestyles of the likes of Posh And Becks (The End Of The World ), political manifestos (Aliens Of London/World War Three) or now media manipulation. This seems to be a particular target...
