It was the final day of Hollywood Week and there were 47 women angling for a spot in the top 20. In order to move from Hollywood to Las Vegas, the women had to sing for their lives (or at least for that part of their lives they wanted to spend on reality television). Contestants were given the choice of singing a song from a list of Idol-approved numbers or performing a royalty-free original song. Opting for the latter was 18-year-old Angela Miller, who easily earned herself a spot in the...

Hollywood week continued, giving us all the highs and lows we’ve come to expect this season of ‘American Idol’. But you might be surprised to learn which singers were sent home!
Now that Hollywood week has (finally) come to an end, will we be seeing the first signs of a potential female winner on American Idol after a six year absence? The way they’re framing the season so far, it looks like they’re hoping for that to happen!
As the Feb. 14 episode began, we were greeted with a video reminding us that a girl hasn’t won the show in six years. Even though Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban basically forced down our throats that this has been the best set of girls ever on the show, I’d like to see what they’d say if Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood walked in the room!
Now to the performances…...

Thirty-nine talented young singers stand on the precipice of superstardom. And so does one kinda crazy chick who has only one drum stick (musical, not chicken) as well as the potential to turn American Idol bandleader Ray Chew’s job into the kind of situation that might pique renewed interest in a revival of Discovery Channel’s recently departed Dirty Jobs.
Yes indeed, tonight’s final installment of Season 12 Hollywood Week put the women through their final paces, narrowed their numbers to a lean 20, and — if the “we need a girl to win this year, Please!” intro is to be...

The end of American Idol's 12th Hollywood Week is upon us, as the girls battle it out during solo rounds. At the end of the day, 20 will be left standing to join this season's top male contestants.
Let's find out who will be moving on to Las Vegas, shall we?
Each female singer will have the option of choosing a song from the Idol song list or singing an original number for her solo audition. This is a new twist for this stage of the competition, one which doesn't seem to have been offered to the guys last week.
Angela Miller chooses option two and decides to sing an original song for the judges. She plays piano with Idol musicians backing her and it gives me chills it's so good. Angela just set the bar so incredibly high it's going to be hard for the other girls to compete with her.

Thursday night's (Feb. 14) episode of "American Idol" starts by asking if a girl can win. We don't actually think a girl can win anymore, honestly. But you don't necessarily have to win the whole thing to have success.
It's the final day of Hollywood Week. 47 women will be whittled down to 20 (and presumably, we'll see the 28 men cut down to 20 as well).
Here are the highlights:
Group One:
Angela Miller takes a risk by performing an original song. Hmm. Turns out, however, that she's pretty incredible. The judges are blown away. Keith Urban looks like he's about to cry. Also in that group are Candice Glover on "Girl on Fire" and Janelle Arthur on "I Told You So" and both are great. Who is not great is Zoanette Johnson, but that's no big surprise. She really has no business still being there. She makes up her song on the spot and it's like -- Ok.

It's been a long and sometimes tear-filled journey for the men of American Idol. They've survived auditions, sudden death eliminations, Group Rounds, and tonight they'll sing their final solo number for the judges.
Who will be left standing? Let's find out now...
Cuts will be made after every 8th performance.
Leading off the solo round is Paul Jolley who's quite nervous. So nervous he nearly cries before he can even sing and Mariah has to remind him to breathe. He's not able to overcome his nerves and Nicki calls his lack of confidence a "turn off" and unprofessional.
Lazaro Arbos is the second to sing and chooses Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory." Curtis Finch, Jr., sings "Jar of Hearts" and his theatrics distract from what could be an otherwise interesting arrangement of the number.
From the first group, Lazaro, Paul, and Curtis all move on. We might only be...

If God is an American Idol fan — and that’s a big “if,” considering where Jennifer Hudson, Ricky Braddy and Pia Toscano have finished over the years — then perhaps Nicki Minaj is the insane, mumbly-mouthed angel sent (ejected?) from above, here to drop harsh truths and a wacky kind of honesty that have been missing from the show for far too long.
Certainly, Nicki’s anti-sob story, pro-weirdness, “give us one minute of professionalism” stance injected much-needed energy into Night 2 of Season 12′s gender-segregated Hollywood Week, following a Wednesday night telecast that all too often blared like a giant neon sign proclaiming,...

Idol heads to Hollywood, where finally the attention shifts from the fireworks between judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey to the contestants competing to be the next American Idol. All the contestants collected from across the country, from the streets of New York City to the open roads of Oklahoma, are gathered in Hollywood hoping to make it far enough to sing on live television.
This year, Idol is shaking things up by dividing Hollywood Week by gender, and the boys get to go first. The first round is a solo a cappella,...

The stakes were high as American Idol contestants converged on Hollywood to see if they have what it takes to be the next winner, as Ryan promised this judging panel would be one of the toughest we've ever seen.
They'll whittle down and weed out those who don't make the grade and at the end. Who'll be left standing? Let's find out now...
In addition to shaking up the judging panel this year, American Idol producers have also shaken up the competition. Instead of bringing all the contestants to Hollywood at the same time, they've opted to separate this round.
That's right--the first edition of Hollywood week is guys only. No girls allowed. (Except Nicki and Mariah, of course.)
The first round of Hollywood Week is the sudden death a capella round. In addition to impressing the judges, their families are in the balcony watching. The pressure is high as they take the stage.

Nicki Minaj would prefer to go down with the ship than to walk down the Queen Mary's gangplank in her enormous platform heels. At least that's the impression we got when the fire alarm went off and Nicki just sat there rolling her eyes until Nigel Lythgoe himself told her to scoot.
The excitement all started when 16-year old Jesaiah Baer started singing Kimbra's "Settle Down" and the docked cruise ship's fire alarm went off, forcing the logistical nightmare of a mandatory evacuation of a thousand American Idol hopefuls, and Nicki.

It's the final week of American Idol's cross-country talent search. And as the judges head to San Antonio, Texas, a surprising lack of diva-on-diva trash-talking allowed the focus to fall squarely on the contestants who seemed like they could be serious contenders this season (or at least keep things interesting).
Case in point: 19-year-old Mississippi native Papa Peachez who described himself as "a cute little white boy and ... so much more than that. I'm really just a big black woman trapped in a little boy's body."
After Peachez belted out an original song, Nicki Minaj immediately showed him some love.

American Idol doesn’t get everything right all the time, but let’s give the lumbering old beast a round of applause — or as J.Lo likes to call it, a standing ovation — for trimming back the Season 12 auditions to a succinct, three-week affair.
If I’m being completely honest, the sometimes uninspiring Golden Ticket recipients from tonight’s two-city, two-hour extravaganza had me wondering if maybe Nigel Lythgoe & Co. should’ve considered additional cuts. But ultimately, the episode was not without its charms: “The great Randy Jackson” ridiculing Shubha Vedula’s name in front of a national TV audience...

(Not) Dynamic duo Derek and David Bacerott get "the whole thing was terrible" and "I'm trying to save your lives, here" from Randy. They get "we're trying to save our futures.
