Helix, the latest series from Ronald D. Moore (creator of Battlestar Galactica), follows a team of scientists from the Centres for Disease Control who travel to a research facility in the Arctic to investigate a potential outbreak of disease. While there, they find themselves stuck in a life-or-death situation that could decide the fate of the future of mankind.
I’ll be honest, I never really got Ronald Moore’s version of Battlestar Galactica – for me the show was all about the huge adventure of space, not the small arguments between the humans exploring the cast galaxies. I was obviously in the minority as the show had, and still has, a very vocal following amongst fans. I was hoping that this latest sci-fi show,...

Helix, Season 1, Episode 07: “Survivor Zero”
Written by Sean Crouch
Directed by Mike Rohl
Airs Fridays at 10 Pm on Syfy
With the entrance of the Ilaria corporation, as well as the sudden change in Dr. Walker’s eyes to silver, last week’s episode set up a number of compelling developments in the ongoing story of Arctic Biosystems. This week’s episode examines the aftermath of both these developments, as well as the addition of another component to the facility’s already volatile mix, in another strong episode that puts Dr. Hatake in several crosshairs while still effectively maintaining the dangers of the vectors.
This week’s episode leaves Daniel in a very interesting position. Not only does he learn of the brewing fight between Constance and Dr. Hatake this week, his reunion with Anana also opens his eyes to an aspect of the...

Review Billy Grifter 10 Feb 2014 - 11:31
Helix appears to be getting messier with every episode. Here's Billy's review of the latest instalment...
This review contains spoilers.
1.6 Aniqatiga
The theme of this week’s Helix is getting better, after what seems like fatal injury, death or infection. Those characters (with the sad exception of Doreen), who you thought were goners all make miraculous recoveries.
The first of these is Sergio, who we see dragged away from where Daniel left him dying in the snow. For most people an ice axe to the gut would be a serious injury, but his military training has prepared him to shrug off minor scratches like that. In fact just to show how tough his is, in -sixty degree temperatures his blood doesn’t even freeze immediately. Perhaps I’ve underestimated him.
What might be keeping him going in the gallons of testosterone that Daniel and Alan have access to,...

Helix, Season 1, Episode 06: “Aniqatiga”
Written by Adam Lash and Cori Uchida
Directed by Mike Rohl
Airs Fridays at 10 Pm on Syfy
With Major Balleseros left for dead, and Dr. Farragut discovering that Doreen was murdered, last week’s events proved more clearly than ever that the Cdc could not rely on anyone telling them the truth. The discovery of Dr. Hvit proved that the facility had a lot of secrets that went beyond the nature of the virus. This week’s episode delves into some darker secrets being hidden, in a strong episode that brings Dr. Farragut and Dr. Jordan up to speed while introducing new elements into the mix.
The presence of Anana is an intriguing new wrinkle, particularly in its implications. While other scientists have expressed a fear of Dr. Hatake and the facility before, there’s never been any indication that the people at...

Review Ron Hogan 17 Jun 2013 - 08:15
Falling Skies delivers a slower episode than last week's action-heavy two-parter. Here's Ron's review of Badlands...
This review contains spoilers.
3.3 Badlands
When you look at the television landscape, you see period dramas (Mad Men), expensive costume dramas (Game of Thrones), police procedurals, teen supernatural romances, and every other basic genre of film covered. In Falling Skies, you get a nice weekly dose of PG-13 sci-fi action with a positive, humanity-can-rise-above-our-differences message. It's a fun bit of television, but you can't rise above your differences if you don't have differences.
Thus far, the show has done a good job of keeping the antagonists somehow different from our heroes. Between harnessed kids, Pope back when he was a bad guy, and various potential collaborators (Karen in particular), there has always been a strong potential for human antagonists, but until this season, it has rarely been blatant.

Just a few updates to end the week.
Blood and Chrome trailer was shown at the BSG panel at WonderCon this weekend. Hero Complex has a report from the panel with Kevin Grazier. Here is a description of the trailer (no, it's not available anywhere yet):
At the end of his talk, Grazier screened a trailer for the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome,” a two-hour television film which is set in the 10th year of the First Cylon War. Edited at rapid-cutting pace to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song” for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” – which was actually quite fitting with images of ice-covered planets and (space)ships – the trailer ended with title cards flashing the words “It’s time for a SyFy game-changer.”Still no official word on what Blood and Chrome is (a TV film or a pilot) even though...

Aleks Paunovic is back in Arctic Air tonight. It's not the first time that he has appeared on the show, but he will have a more central part in tonight's episode, which airs at 9 pm on CBC in Canada. Other familiar faces will probably show up, too. CBC has a new interview with Aleks. Snippets:
You play Jim McAlister on Arctic Air, what is that guy all about?
Jim is a fun-loving best buddy with a big heart. He's stoked to have Bobby (Adam Beach) back in town. He's a prospector and trusts Bobby to the fullest. He'll do anything to protect his friends, family and the North.
What is it like working on a all Canadian production as opposed to a U.S. production that is being filmed in Canada?
I love home grown projects. Most of the U.S. projects are about situations, not about where they are shooting.

This is the first part of the weekend monster update, with more news & stuff coming in the next couple of days.
I got my Grimms confused in yesterday's post as it turns out. Tonight's episode won't be "Let Your Hair Down," but "The Three Bad Wolves." Rapunzel doesn't show up until next week.
Nick (David Giuntoli) is called to a suspected arson case, which exposes a longstanding family feud that brings Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) face-to-face with characters from his troubled past. While Monroe wrestles with restraining his wild side, it’s up to Nick to keep everything from going up in flames. Russell Hornsby, Bitsie Tulloch, Sasha Roiz and Reggie Lee also star. There are a few sneak peeks at THR and Dread Central. Spoiler TV has the promotional stills. Here is the teaser:
Yesterday's excellent "Danse Macabre," which did well in the ratings, is available on NBC.com.

Just in time for your Solstice celebrations. :)Anyone interested in writing an episode of season three (coming in 2012) or submitting fan art, hit the link.
Luciana Carro (Caprica's Priyah Magnus, Battlestar's Kat) has joined Twitter. You can follow her here: @LucianaCarro. These days, she is working on season two of Falling Skies, along with Ryan Robbins and a bunch of Caprica and BSG writers -- Remi Aubuchon, Mark Verheiden, David Weddle and Bradley Thompson. From their recent tweets, Luciana is playing a character called Crazy Lee and they recently wrapped filming episode four.

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

Since yesterday:
Spoiler TV has the promotional pics from the next episode of Hart of Dixie and Comic Book Resources has a new interview with Scott Porter. He mainly talks about the X-Men animated series, which premieres on October 21. Snippet:
This version of the X-Men story is a very modern one that Warren Ellis initially wrote with a lot of influence from his "Astonishing X-Men" run, but the one twist that brings in the classic thread for Cyclops is that the series starts just after the death of Jean Grey at the end of "The Dark Phoenix Saga." What was it like to pick up the character after the worst tragedy in his life?
That made it completely interesting for me. To allude to why I have such respect for Cyclops, it's because he's been through hell. He's lost Jean how many times now? He has to control this odd...

One chaotic round of updates coming up.
Jane Espenson has announced the new project she has been working on with Alessandra Torresani, Brad Bell (Cheeks) and Sean Hemeon, in an interview with CliqueClack. Yes, it's Husbands, a web series about "two guys, a newly dating couple, who celebrate a new marriage equality law in Vegas and wake up married." A couple of snippets from the interview:
Km: What do you hope to become of Husbands in the long run? If it simply stays as a free series on the web, will that satisfy not only you but the actors?
Je: Honestly, I would love to see Husbands turn into a network television show. I’m loving the freedom that we’re enjoying as we put it together ourselves, but there’s something about it that feels so accessible — it’s Ab Fab, Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace … it feels...

Tons of updates today, most of them from Comic-Con.
Let's start with Sasha Roiz - he makes his first appearance on Warehouse 13 tomorrow (Monday, 9/8c, Syfy).
CP24 has a recent video interview with him and he also did a Q&A with the press that is finally up on several sites. I think Starry Mag has the least edited version of it. The interview is mostly about Warehouse 13, but he also talks about his other new projects and Caprica. Snippets:
So can you at least tell us how many episode we’re going to see you in Warehouse 13?
I’m not sure the specific number, but I mean I’m there for a good chunk. But I’m there for a good - yes, all the sudden this just doesn’t make sense you know. But no, I’m there for a good chunk of the season,...

Let's start with the Gemini nominations. Carmen Moore has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for Blackstone, and BSG's Callum Keith Rennie and Sam Witwer also got best actor nods for Shattered and Being Human. Big congrats to all!
With Gun Hill Road opening in New York this weekend, Esai Morales is everywhere. Fox News Latino has a short interview with him and Rashaad Ernesto Green. Snippet:
"I read a script that made me cry, that made me feel, that made me happy to be a human being," Morales told Fox News Latino.
Morales said that the movie deals not with sexual orientation but with gender identity.
"When a little boy stares into a mirror at 3 years old and says ‘Mami, I see a girl,’ you know that’s not a joke," he said. "Often...

Retroplayer - So with Caprica being cancelled without the chance of a second series and BSG over are you proud of the work you did on them overall? How do you feel looking back?
Bear - I’m very proud of the work I did and contributions I made in helping to create a universe on those two series. I feel that BSG had such a profound influence on my life that even to try and talk about it is a fools errand. It changed me personally,...

Tons of updates today. Let's start with Bear McCreary.
GameMusic.net posted an interview they did with him in April. It's mostly about the Socom 4 score, but Caprica and BSG also get a mention, as well as the other shows he is/was scoring. Here is a snippet:
Matt: To switch a bit, in addition to video games, you scored three television series over the past season: Eureka, The Walking Dead, and The Cape. How were you able to fit in composing and recording for so many projects?
Bear McCreary: I don't sleep a lot (laughs). The schedules are tough, but thankfully, of the three shows that you cited, two of them are on cable and cable has a very different schedule than network television. Generally I'm able to weave my way through the schedules and I usually don't have to work on more than one show at any given time.

Great news today. Esai Morales is the first Caprica actor (and second Adama) to be cast in 17th Precinct. He'll be joining James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Jamie Bamber. Here is the report from Deadline:
Esai Morales has joined the cast of Ron Moore's NBC drama pilot 17th Precinct. Set in a city ruled by magic, it revolves around the workings of the 17th, headed by Detective Chief Inspector Wilder Blanks (Eamonn Walker). Morales, repped Innovative and Brillstein, will play his second in command, Lt. Liam Butterfield.

The Caprica Season 1.5 DVD is out this Tuesday (Dec. 21) and you can still pre-order it on Amazon. NBC has sent out copies for review and the first interesting bits about the commentary tracks come from IGN's Eric Goldman; one about plans to have James Callis and Tricia Helfer appear in the second half of season one, and another about one of the Final Five appearing in season two (if the show hadn't been pulled).
If you haven't seen the last five episodes, the general consensus is that they're the best part of the season. For better or worse, the show got a lot more prequelized and the hour that was cut last year can be felt, especially in the last two episodes, but the storylines, characters, dialogue and everything else stayed as frakking inspired as it always has been. Be warned, though. The finale wraps up the most prominent storylines...

One thing I can’t get enough of are comic book conventions. I started attending eight years ago and haven’t looked back. If you’ve never been (and are at all interested in comics) I encourage you to check out at least one if it’s within a reasonable distance. I promise, you won’t experience anything like it as they have an energy all their own.
This passed weekend Wizard World delivered their comic convention to Toronto, Canada. It was an inaugural event here in Canada but there were no shortage of attendees. While the list of guests was not as huge as I would have liked, there were some interesting names. Firefly’s Jewel Staite, Battlestar Galactica’s Kandyse McClure and Luciana Carro, Buck Roger’s Gil Gerard and Erin Gray, and Caprica’s own Magda Apanowicz.

The Caprica casting office seems to be working overtime lately and is snagging a bunch of great new people to take on key roles in the show. Previously, we told you about Battlestar Galactica alumni Luciana Carro joining the show as well as comedian Patton Oswalt recently being cast. And now, word comes today that everyone’s other favorite former vampire James Marsters is joining the show as well and taking on what is described as a “sizable role.”
No word yet on exactly what Marsters will be doing on the show and who, or what, he will be doing it to but we do know, according to EW, that he will be pretty much doing what he does best and playing a dangerous and unpredictable bad guy driven by his carnal and moralistic desires. Marsters will play a terrorist leader named Barnabus Greele in at least three episodes of the upcoming Syfy series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, following his recent role in Dollhouse and the feature Big Fan, comedian Patton Oswalt is now joining the cast of Syfy’s upcoming drama series Caprica as a recurring character. According to the article, on the Battlestar Galactica prequel, Oswalt “will play Baxter Sarno, a popular Caprican comedian and talk show host on whose show Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcomson), ultimately appear.”
As this character was not in the original two hour pilot, obviously as the show is currently filming in Vancouver, the producers felt they needed some sort of recurring character like this to provide some overall context to events unfolding after the first Cylon has taken its first steps. Oswalt is a pretty good choice for this type of role where his humor and somewhat abrasive style can take center stage and provide that context and commentary. Should be...

Luciana Carro is returning to Syfy with a role on the BSG prequel series Caprica. TV Squad is reporting that the actress best known for portraying Kat on BSG, the cocky Viper pilot and “stims” addict who eventually became Starbuck’s nemesis, is also the first BSG actor to join the Caprica cast.
As fans will remember, Kat succumbed to radiation poisoning after flying her last mission in season three of BSG. Although Carro will most likely be playing a new character on Caprica, fans will no doubt wonder if the Caprica character will be related to Kat. Since the series takes place 58 years prior to BSG, there is certainly plenty of time to explore the character’s heritage.
Caprica will air on Syfy beginning January 22, 2010.
