It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.
Máximo (Eugenio Derbez): “Hugo, do you remember where my rags-to-riches life story left off? It all started with a job as Las Colinas. I told you about my big promotion and Julia and I getting together — but there’s still so much more I haven’t told you.”
Smash Cut To: Season 2’s big cliffhanger moment. Oh that’s right, (old) Máximo has a grownup daughter we didn’t even know about. The trailer doesn’t really get into that storyline, but certainly the season will.

Exclusive: Lionsgate Television has joined other studios in suspending overall and first-look deals with non-writing producers who are not rendering services due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I hear those impacted include Paul Feig‘s Feigco Entertainment, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum‘s The Tannenbaum Co., Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly‘s Timberman/Beverly Productions, Michael London‘s Groundswell Productions and Power universe star Joseph Sikora.
According to sources, Lionsgate will continue to pay assistants and development executives under the suspended deals until October 1 at which time payments may be extended if needed. A rep for the studio declined comment.
Other studios that have suspended term deals — predominantly with non-writing executive producers — over the last couple of weeks include Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios.
Disney is providing salaries for the impacted assistants through the end of 2023 and development executives through the first week of October.

Apple is booking another stay at the Las Colinas Resort. “Acapulco,” the Spanish- and English-language comedy series starring Eugenio Derbez, is renewed for a 10-episode third season.
The news comes a month after the show’s Season 2 finale, which premiered on the streamer December 16. The show premiered in October 2021, with both seasons consisting of 10 episodes. Season 3 will again consist of 10 episodes, and is scheduled to begin production later this spring.
“We at 3Pas Studios are thankful to Apple TV+, the perfect home for ‘Acapulco,’ along with our production partner Lionsgate, filmmakers and cast and crew,” Derbez said in a statement. “We have always believed that the stories we tell about our communities and cultures can resonate with global audiences, so crank up the AC, it’s about to get a lot hotter at Las Colinas Resort.”

There will be no fifth season for The Last O.G. The Season 4 finale, which aired on December 21, 2021, will now serve as the series finale for the comedy series starring Tracy Morgan, Deadline has confirmed.
According to sources, the decision was made months ago, following the series’ Season 4 run. It is not connected to the current pullout from original scripted programming on TNT and TBS following the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger, which resulted in the decision yesterday not to proceed with production on new TBS series Kill the Orange-Faced Bear starring Damon Wayans Jr. in a cost-cutting move.
Co-created and executive-produced by Oscar-winner Jordan Peele, The Last O.G. followed Tray (Morgan), an ex-con who was shocked to see just how much the world had changed when he was released from a 15-year prison stint. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” after getting axed by NBC, may be getting a second life at Roku.
Roku, which has been bulking up its original programming slate, is in discussions with Lionsgate Television, the producer of the musical dramedy, for a movie special bringing back the original cast including star Jane Levy, Variety confirmed.
Roku and Lionsgate reps declined to comment.
Sources cautioned that while Roku and Lionsgate are in talks, there’s no deal signed. The project under discussion would be a two-hour movie special that would hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays. While other reports have said Roku would have the option to pick up “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for a new season, a source familiar with the talks said that’s not on the table and that the movie deal would be a one-off.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is nearing a comeback, though it may be a brief one.
The musical comedy, which was canceled earlier this year by NBC after two seasons, is closing in on a deal with Roku for a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, an individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap. The project is being eyed for the holidays.
According to TV Line, which broke the news, if the movie performs well, a potential third season could be in the cards. It is not yet a done deal but is in advanced negotiations. The entire main cast is expected to return, though not all deals are done.
Reps for Roku and Lionsgate, which produces the show with Universal Television, declined to comment. Peacock decided against ordering a third season after it was canceled in May.

The options on the cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, headlined by Jane Levy, expired earlier this week, and they have not been extended, I have learned.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist lead studio Lionsgate Television has been looking to find a new home for the show since NBC canceled the series three weeks ago after two seasons and a potential move to NBCUniversal streamer Peacock did not materialize.
I hear conversations are still ongoing, with various options to continue the story of Zoey Clarke explored — series, miniseries or a movie. While none is believed to be close to reality, if any progresses, Lionsgate would need to make new deals with some or all of the Season 2 regular cast, which included Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen.

“The Moodys” has been canceled at Fox after two seasons, Variety has learned.
The series originally debuted in December 2019. The second season debuted on April 1, but Fox pulled it from the schedule with three episodes left around two weeks later. The final episode of the season is currently slated to air this Sunday, June 20. It will now serve as the series finale. The first season consisted of six episodes, while the second season bumped it up to eight.

Fox is saying goodbye to The Moodys.
The network will not be bringing the family comedy series, which stars Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, back for a third season.
It’s not a huge surprise after the network quietly pulled it from the schedule after its fifth episode of the second season. The last episode is expected to air on June 20.
The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season in 2019. Fox brought it back for a second season as an ongoing family comedy, but the half-hour starring Denis Leary has struggled to get traction, ranking among the lowest rated Fox series.
Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill, The Moodys follows the tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, Moody family through their misadventures.

NBC has canceled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons, the network said Wednesday.
The show, a co-production between Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, will be shopped to other outlets. However, according to an individual familiar with the situation, NBC’s sister streaming service Peacock has already passed on a third season.
The news comes after the Austin Winsberg-created musical dramedy wrapped its second season back in May.
“In a world where finding loyal and passionate audiences is never easy, we believe there must be a home for this great, award-winning show with a passionate and dedicated following,” a Lionsgate spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” stars Jane Levy as a software developer who discovers she has the ability to hear other people’s innermost thoughts via musical numbers. Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar and Mary Steenburgen also star.
The show, a co-production between Lionsgate Television and Universal Television, will be shopped to other outlets. However, according to an individual familiar with the situation, NBC’s sister streaming service Peacock has already passed on a third season.

The cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist might have performed their last number. NBC has opted not to give a third-season renewal to the musical dramedy with a passionate following, which topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll for a second consecutive year.
The decision comes three and a half weeks after the series, headlined by Jane Levy, aired its Season 2 finale. As Deadline reported last month, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a middling linear Live+Same Day ratings performer with an outsized digital footprint, had been in consideration for a pickup by NBC sibling streamer Peacock. I hear that Peacock, the streaming home of Zoey’s first two seasons, ultimately opted not to proceed with a third season.
In addition to being a digital phenom, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist also has gotten awards recognition. Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the series with Universal Television, will be mounting an aggressive...

The series, which stars Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee and Mary Steenburgen, wrapped up its second season this month with a surprise twist. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, created and written by showrunner Austin Winsberg, has yet to be canceled or renewed for a third season at NBC as the series is one of four shows with undetermined fates at the network.
During the NBC upfront press call last week, Susan Rovner said that decisions have yet to be made on the four bubble shows.

“The Last O.G.” isn’t done yet.
TBS has renewed the Tracy Morgan comedy for a fourth season, however, it will be moving forward without star Tiffany Haddish who is exiting the series, according to sources. News of the renewal comes around five months after season 3 aired the last of its 10 episodes.
Of note is that the show is changing showrunner for the fourth time in four seasons. Owen Smith, whose previous credits include “Black-ish” and “Survivor’s Remorse,” is taking over from Keenen Ivory Wayans for the forthcoming season. Wayans took over last year from season 2 showrunner Saladin K. Patterson, who himself assumed showrunning duties from season 1 showrunner and series co-creator John Carcieri.

The Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins comedy “The Moodys” is getting a second season at Fox.
The series, which follows a tight-knit but dysfunctional family, is an adaptation of Australian series “A Moody Christmas” from The Jungleboys Entertainment and Australian Broadcasting Corporation. CBS Television Studios is the studio behind the show.
“The Moodys” debuted as a six-episode holiday event series. Fox’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn had indicated last summer that if the series proved successful, the network might bring it back for another Christmas run.
“With ‘The Moodys,’ we set out to brand the holidays in the only way Fox can – bold and unconventional. The Moody family will be back. Fox has picked up a second season of comedy The Moodys, starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins.
The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season last year.
The second season, targeted for the 2020-21 season will not be holiday-themed, with a bigger order size than the six-episode original limited run. I hear it will be between 6 and 13 half-hours. It may be paired with Fox’s only returning live-action comedy series, Last Man Standing, which shares a similar blue-collar sensibility.

NBC has ordered a second season of musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.
A co-production between Lionsgate TV and Universal TV, the series had been considered the strongest contender among NBC’s bubble shows this season. It has a passionate following and recently topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll with record support.
Of the other NBC bubble series, the network this week canceled Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector and Perfect Harmony. Manifest is still very much in contention as NBC and producer Warner Bros. TV are discussing a deal, while Indebted is not expected to continue.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been a digital phenom with huge online/social media following whose very modest Live+Same Day linear ratings are dwarfed by its delayed multi-platform numbers. It is one of NBC’s strongest digital performers,...

TBS has slotted Tuesday, April 7 for the season three premiere of its hit sitcom The Last O.G., starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish.
Co-created and executive produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele, The Last O.G. has ranked as cable’s #1 sitcom since its 2018 launch.
In season 3, after serving his time at the halfway house and having his food truck go up in flames, Tray (Morgan) is forced into finding a new place to live, and new forms of income. He lands in gentrified Brooklyn with a host of colorful, hipster neighbors, where he begins to give “hood legend” walking tours of the city that is forever changing around him. Meanwhile, Tray’s ex-girlfriend Shay (Haddish) is presented with the business opportunity of a lifetime, which could mean big changes for the whole family. You can watch a teaser trailer above.

That ’70s Show alum Topher Grace is returning to network comedy as a star of Home Economics, ABC’s single-camera family comedy pilot from writers Michael Colton and John Aboud, the Tannenbaum Co., Lionsgate TV and ABC Studios.
Grace, who also will executive produce Home Economics, was among the sought after actors this pilot season. Landing him lifted the contingency off Home Economics, securing the project a pilot green light. It also marked one of the biggest talent deals so far this pilot season.
As Deadline reported last month, because of the increased competition from streamers which is luring away top acting talent, broadcast networks have been pressured to raise the salary bar in order to attract top-tier actors who are growing more reluctant to do a broadcast show. Observers had expected $250,000 per episode to be the target for securing big names for pilots this year. I hear Grace’s fee is north of that.

ABC has given a pilot order to Home Economics, a single-camera family comedy from writers Michael Colton and John Aboud (Penguins Of Madagascar), Lionsgate TV and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum’s studio-based Tannenbaum Company.
Written by Colton and Aboud, Home Economics is about three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
The project, inspired by Colton’s family, was originally set up at Fox last development season with a script commitment plus penalty. ABC bought the comedy on spec, with ABC Studios coming on board to co-produce alongside Lionsgate. (Fox Entertainment likely retains a small piece.) Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television’s Maxfield Elins will oversee the series on behalf of the studio.
At ABC, Home Economics joins single-camera comedy pilots Work Wife and Prospect and multi-camera My Village.

Fox has put into development two British adaptations – remakes of crime drama Silent Witness and off-beat comedy This Country — with significant commitments.
The network has handed a script plus penalty to Silent Witness to star The Fighter’s Melissa Leo, who will exec produce alongside Outlander writer Joy Blake and Kim and Eric Tannenbaum, and a put pilot commitment to This Country from Sex and the City writer and producer Jenny Bicks and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.
Both shows come via Lionsgate’s deal with BBC Studios, which has already seen NBC hand a put pilot commitment to an adaptation of Channel 4 comedy Home and CBS develop a remake of BBC comedy Ghosts.
Silent Witness (left) is a long-running British crime legal drama. Created by Nigel McCrery, it has aired on the British public broadcaster since 1996 with 22 seasons. It follows two determined women with conflicting methodologies and their team...
