From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

There’s a creative freedom to the horror anthology; they’re not tethered to one central narrative, style, tone, or even voice. Some anthology collections unite multiple filmmakers, each taking on a segment. Some employ a single director for cohesion. Even the framework in which the film weaves its tales varies, whether by conventional wraparound or a complete remix.
For the viewer, anthologies offer a grab bag of bite-sized horror treats; there’s no telling what kind of horror the next segment will bring. This week’s streaming picks highlight horror anthologies that run the gamut from classic anthology format to experimental, from lighthearted to bone-chilling.
As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

Dabney Coleman, the character actor who delighted audiences in films like 9 to 5, Dragnet, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Tootsie, WarGames, Cloak & Dagger, You’ve Got Mail, and the TV shows The Guardian and Boardwalk Empire, has died at 92. The news leaked earlier today but has only just been confirmed by his daughter, Quincy Coleman. Often underappreciated in Hollywood’s vast populous of show-stopping performers, Dabney Coleman was a master of playing smarmy, selfish, hot-headed, and dick-ish characters with class and playfulness. Details about Coleman’s passing spread quietly on Twitter before getting confirmed by mainstream outlets, with many showing their love for Mr. Coleman’s rich body of work and unforgettable contributions to the entertainment industry.
Dabney Coleman made his Broadway debut in a brief run of A Call on Kuprin before setting up camp in the television space with roles in Kraft Suspense Theater’s The Threatening Eye and as Dr.

98 years walking on this earth and over 70 of those working in the industry that he and we all love. How do you talk about a man who had his hands in everything and gave us so much? He was an honorary Oscar winner and heavily involved in the Academy itself. He gave us New Concorde and New World Pictures. Roger Corman was a master of the independent and low budget film and known lovingly as the King of Cult. He gave countless actors, writers, and directors their start and was still making appearances right up to his passing. Theres so much to go over but I think that the best way to honor the man is to bring this video in on time and underbudget, bonus Corman points if we can re-use some of the footage from this one in another one of our videos. I cant see a more...

Law & Order’s Season 23 finale on Thursday marked Camryn Manheim’s last episode as Lt. Kate Dixon — who won’t be returning next season — but the hour focused on Tony Goldwyn’s Da Baxter amid another high-profile murder investigation.
A famed sports star was killed, and detectives Shaw and Riley set out to find the culprit. Lt. Dixon oversaw the case on the police side, securing a warrant to arrest their main suspect, a stalker named Kyle Taggert who proved to be a valuable witness. It was his footage from that night which revealed Baxter was the intended target.

In a world where over-polished corporate products dominate the media landscape while the ever-growing threat of AI-generated “art” haunts the horizon, I can’t help but remember a story about how Wes Anderson insisted on using real fur on the stop-motion puppets of his animated opus, Fantastic Mr. Fox. When the animators complained that using fur would result in obvious thumbprints and erratic hair movement that would ruin the “illusion” of lifelike movement, the filmmaker explained that these imperfections were the point.

Law & Order has been one of NBC's flagship programs for 23 years despite a ten-year hiatus, but is the formula that made it famous outdated now?
The original series pioneered the idea of "ripped from the headlines" stories and a format dedicating half of each episode to the police investigation and the other half to the arrestee's trial. This proved to be so popular that it spawned a ton of sequels and spinoffs.
Law & Order: Svu is the most successful, having just been renewed for a 26th season. However, Svu doesn't follow the format of its parent show most of the time, often dedicating 90% or more of the hour to the police investigation -- should its parent series follow suit?

As a performer, Harry Price nurtured a keen interest in film through his work with London dance company Balletboyz – who we last saw on Dn with in-flight safety demonstration inspired short Flight – and as an independent filmmaker felt it only right to collaborate work with the company for his directorial debut Limet. Inspired by Price’s desire to dig into the complexities of human relationships and translate intricate emotions and feelings into movement, Limpet showcases a lived in intimacy through close handheld camerawork and simple yet effective cinematography, all brought together by a stark, realist and layered sound design. As intended, there is no clear linear narrative to the film; instead, recurring themes of water and the juxtaposition of public and private spaces all echo through the short, uniting its components into a great whole. Sam Waterson's departure from Law & Order left a hole that'll be hard to fill. Waterson played Jack McCoy for 30 years, making his name synonymous with the long-running police/lawyer procedural.
Someone had to take his place, and Tony Goldwyn is not only an accomplished actor in his own right but has appeared within the Law & Order universe before. (Goldwyn played Frank Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.)
Goldwyn's Nicholas Baxter has only had a few episodes to shine in. He's a different type of district attorney than McCoy, so his character will take some getting used to, but the change in direction could be precisely what Law & Order Season 23 needs.
McCoy was often soft-spoken, though he could get loud when he was passionately angry and mostly stayed in his office. Baxter differentiated himself from the get-go; his first scene involved inserting himself into a crime scene and introducing himself.

In Netflix’s sprawling sci-fi epic 3 Body Problems, Mike Evans seems to be a man with noble intentions. One day he’s trying to save an endangered species of bird, and the other day he’s trying to save all of humankind. Except for the second one, he didn’t hesitate to co-found a cult in cahoots with an alien race, who clearly doesn’t have a good intention for humanity. Evans, along with his beloved Wenjie Ye, turns out to be the primary reason for the entire mess that causes all the problems in the show. The man’s not inherently evil, though, as he takes his last breath with the belief that what he’s doing has to be for the greater good. In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at the character and the motives behind his activities in the show.

Three weeks after Law & Order bid farewell to Sam Waterston, the NBC procedural on Thursday introduced Tony Goldwyn as the newest District Attorney.
Usually, the legal part of the drama doesn’t happen until later in the episode, but Goldwyn’s Nicholas Baxter joined the action at the top of the hour as Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) are investigating the bludgeoning death of multi-millionaire Jonah Barlowe.
Baxter explains his sudden appearance by saying the sight of the “swirling lights” got him excited and that he “hasn’t been at crime scene in over 30 years. I couldn’t help myself.”
He lingers at the scene for only a few seconds before telling the detectives that “I’ll do everything in my power to create a constructive and transparent relationship with the police. That’s it.”

[This story contains spoilers from the Feb. 22, 2024 episode of Law & Order, “Last Dance.”]
Jack McCoy left the world of Law & Order the way he came into it — in a courtroom.
Sam Waterston said goodbye to the long-running NBC franchise in Thursday’s episode, ending his 19-season, 405-episode run as prosecutor-turned-New York County District Attorney Jack McCoy. Waterston’s final episode saw Jack returning to the courtroom to finish trying a murder case in which the defendant is a billionaire with close ties to New York’s mayor.
The episode, titled “Last Dance” and written by showrunner Rick Eid, constructs a solid but not slam-dunk case against Scott Kelton (Rob Benedict), who’s accused of killing a former employee, Veronica Knight (Shay Guthrie), who was about to go public with an accusation that he had sexually assaulted her several years earlier. McCoy instructs prosecutor Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) not to accept a plea deal with less than a 10-year sentence...

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

In Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” 19th-century scientist Baxter (Willem Dafoe) restores Bella (Emma Stone) to life with the brain of her unborn child — and the surreal visual design reflects her wild imagination as she progresses from infant to liberated woman.
To achieve that, the director instructed production designers James Price (“Paddington 2” art director) and Shona Heath (a collaborator of fashion photographer Tim Walker making her film debut) to create a fantastical world that was a throwback to the old-school style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s “Black Narcissus,” with miniatures, painted backdrops, and rear screen projection (high-tech LED screens created the oceans and skies).
“My experience in film is zero,” Heath said in an on-set interview in the video above, “so this wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for James.”

What? We can't believe Sam Waterson's leaving Law & Order.
There have been many cast changes, but Jack McCoy has been a fixture since the 1990s.
But sometimes, a character has gone as far as he can. McCoy may be ready to retire, which offers an opportunity to breathe new life into the oldest member of the Law & Order franchise.
McCoy is an old-school district attorney -- the kind of man the younger characters look to as a mentor. This is how Law & Order district attorneys tend to be; when he was young, he reported to Adam Schiff, who had many years of experience.
But times have changed, and Law & Order is overdue for a shakeup. Many viewers who love Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order: Organized Crime are having a hard time connecting with this reboot, so something needs to change.

It's not easy to be a district attorney, especially in a big city like Manhattan, where competing pressures exist.
Jack McCoy should be perfectly poised to handle it. He was an Ada for years, is passionate about justice, and knows the ins and outs of the legal system.
But on Law & Order Season 23 Episode 3, McCoy again made a questionable decision based on what would most likely win the case. It was less egregious than entering a potentially fake video into evidence, but it still felt like McCoy had lost his way.
Cops should never be put on pedestals, and questioning their integrity and fitness for the job is fair game. And since Riley got tipsy on the job and punched his supervisor, he would have faced public questioning about it sooner or later.
But McCoy's decision about this was purely political. He weighed the possibility that the cops wouldn't...

Talk about ripped from the headlines!
Law & Order has taken real-life stories and turned them into entertaining crime dramas since the 1990s. But Law & Order Season 23 Episode 1 went beyond that.
It used a story revolving around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to ask questions that didn't have answers, and this conflict is so contentious that it probably pissed viewers off no matter where they stand on the issue,
This was an ambitious story. The central theme seemed to be that the conflict in the Middle East has spilled over into America, and the fighting and hatred on both sides will probably never stop.
It felt like it hit too damn many issues at once.
The president's conduct raised legitimate questions about when free speech crosses over into hate speech and whether professors and students have the right to express views on campus that could cause harm to others. This was a footnote in this complicated story.
