Emily Blunt became a bit of an action star after starring in films like Edge of Tomorrow and The Adjustment Bureau. But there was one action film she was cast in where she was thought to be a major detriment to the movie.

Blunt starred in the 2015 feature Sicario directed by Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. She played a young FBI agent in the action thriller, and had as much input in her character as the filmmaker did. Being she was playing a woman surrounded by very masculine characters, it was important for Blunt’s character to maintain her femininity. But at the same time, Blunt still wanted her character to exude the same kind of strength.

Mark Wahlberg once shared that his wife Rhea Durham was a little concerned about her husband’s future when he collaborated with Seth MacFarlane. Durham felt doing a comedy like Ted might’ve done her husband’s career little favors.
How Rhea Durham responded to Mark Wahlberg doing ‘Ted’ Mark Wahlberg | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
MacFarlane switched from animation to live-action with his directorial debut Ted. The 2012 feature followed Wahlberg’s antics with a sentient teddy bear who was also voiced by the Family Guy creator. Wahlberg had no idea MacFarlane was connected to his hit animated series. He was convinced to do the project based on the script alone. Family Guy, however, only further sold Wahlberg on MacFarlane’s talents.

Star Wars actor Daisy Ridley once found herself sharing the spotlight with another female lead in newcomer Felicity Jones. After seeing Jones promote her heavily praised Star Wars film Rogue One, Ridley couldn’t help reflect on her own experience with the franchise.

Ridley was already well familiar with the Star Wars brand before Jones came into the picture. Initially, being cast in The Force Awakens could be a very overwhelming experience for Ridley to manage. It wasn’t only Ridley’s first Star Wars feature, it was her first time leading a major film.
“[The Force Awakens] was like the beginning of the whole thing, and it was terrifying and incredibly rewarding,” Ridley once said according to the Daily Mail. “I felt like I pushed myself beyond boundaries I thought I had. Now I feel more together and present.

2023 was the year Frasier Crane returned to the small screen following a 20-year break. The "Frasier" revival brought Kelsey Grammer's beloved psychiatrist into the streaming era with a 10-episode series that saw the titular doctor return to Boston some 30 years after he left "Cheers" to star in his own sitcom. That sitcom would, of course, become one of the most celebrated examples of the genre, following Frasier as he started a new life in Seattle alongside his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), father Martin (John Mahoney), and their live-in housekeeper Daphne (Jane Leeves).
It was this supporting cast, along with Peri Gilpin as Frasier's talk radio show producer, Roz, that made the show a classic — though, calling them supporting characters isn't really fair. Despite Kelsey Grammer's not-so-modest opinion that his character was the key to the success of "Frasier," Niles, Martin, Daphne, and Roz were equally as important. Sadly,...

Jodie Foster's starring role as a child sex worker in "Taxi Driver" was the most controversial character in her long career, but it wasn't the dark subject matter that scared the young actress the most. Foster already had several years of work under her belt at age 12, having landed small parts in television like "The Addams Family" and films like Martin Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." Just two years after her first collaboration with the "Goodfellas" director, the pair teamed up again to make "Taxi Driver." But despite being the best actress ever, one aspect of the role was so challenging for Foster that it brought her to tears.
There's a lot about "Taxi Driver" that's unconventional, from the dark subject matter to the groundbreaking cinematography, and the performances were no exception. Scorsese wanted Iris to feel authentic, so he drew inspiration from a few sources, including Foster herself.

Filmmaker David Lynch and his fourth wife, actress Emily Stofle, have filed for divorce after 14 years of marriage.
They met while shooting his 2006 film, Inland Empire. They married in February 2009, two years after his divorce with fellow director Mary Sweeney.
Previous to Sweeny, Lynch was married to Peggy Lunch from 1967 to 1974. Later, he married Mary Fisk, and they were married from 1977 to 1987.
Stofle was also in Lynch’s limited series Peaks: The Return in 2017.
The 45-year-old actress initiated the divorce and made several demands on her petition.
The split has reportedly not been amicable, as Stofle has asked the court to grant sole legal and physical custody of their 11-year-old daughter, Lula Lynch.
She is agreeable with Lynch having visitation rights to their daughter.
She wants Lynch to cover the cost of her attorneys’ fees and to pay her spousal support.

A potential trend is emerging: Actors being forced to shut up in movies.
The new trailer for John Woo’s dialogue-free thriller Silent Night (below) teases a protagonist played by Joel Kinnaman who’s unable to speak. (“Nothing speaks louder than revenge,” reads the movie’s tagline.) The trailer follows Hulu’s similarly dialogue-free hit alien invasion thriller No One Will Save You.
Both are coming, ironically enough, during the SAG-AFTRA strike, which has actors dutifully not speaking to the press about their studio projects.
It’s not clear if dialogue-free movies can correctly be called a trend yet (the old media rule of thumb is it takes at least three examples to use the T-word). But it’s interesting that roughly 100 years after the silent movie era that at least a couple of filmmakers are exploring feature-length storytelling without leaning on dialogue at around the same time.

Some of the best scenes in "The Witcher" season 3 fast-track the show's central relationships. After two seasons spent splitting up and reuniting, Princess Ciri (Freya Allan), Geralt of Rivera (Henry Cavill), and the powerful sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) were finally in one place -- and surprisingly happy. There was still some bad blood about that whole 'Yen almost sacrificed Ciri to a Baba Yaga-esque demon' thing, sure, but "The Witcher" pretty swiftly moved past it. The season premiere features a surprisingly endearing montage of the group evading detection together, all while Yen trains Ciri to be the hero she's meant to become.
These scenes worked well thanks to the cohesion of the core cast, who all have a familial chemistry that makes even a sped-up bonding experience look sweet and believable. According to Chalotra, though, it took some coordination between the actors to get the bond between Ciri...

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" might be centered around Larry David, who plays a fictional version of himself, but arguably the best part of the show is the rotating cast of eccentric characters that flow in and out of Larry's life. Everyone on the show plays some heightened version of their real-life selves, including Larry's "manager," Jeff Greene, portrayed by the irreverent Jeff Garlin. Unlike many of the other characters in Larry's charmed life, Garlin is a consistent staple throughout every season of the show and often acts as a sounding board for some of his crazier ideas. Believe it or not, the original idea for the show did not include Garlin, and adding him to the main cast was a last-minute decision just before the show started filming.
However, Garlin was attached to the series in a creative capacity from the very beginning. In fact, making a meta HBO series was...

For many fans, Yellowstone is one of the best shows on TV. The hit western series, helmed by Taylor Sheridan, has made the cowboy genre popular again, skyrocketing actors like Kelly Reilly to fame and re-establishing Kevin Costner as one of the greatest stars of his generation.
While the show is on hiatus, with no set date for its return to television, many are clamoring for more episodes about the Dutton family. However, not everyone is a fan of Yellowstone. Native American actor Lily Gladstone has a big problem with the representation on the series and recently opened up to Vulture about why she thinks Yellowstone is “deplorable.”

In the film, Carey stars as a young singer who overcomes an abusive childhood to reach stardom alongside a toxic boyfriend. “Glitter” was directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall and cleared $5.3 million at the global box office against a $22 million budget. Carey developed the story behind “Glitter” with “What’s Love Got to Do with It” screenwriter Kate Lanier and playwright Cheryl L. West. Padma Lakshmi, Eric Benét, Max Bessley, Terence Howard, and Da Brat also starred.

With the recent cancellation of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” after just two seasons, HBO has left the Los Angeles Lakers off on a historic loss. “Winning Time” Season 1 ended with the Lakers’ 1980 NBA Championship; Season 2 zoomed through their 1982 win and ended (now awkwardly) with the team’s crushing ’84 loss to the Boston Celtics.
And that will be that for “Winning Time” — there will be no rematch with the Celtics in ’85, which is when the Lakers finally defeated their rivals in the NBA Finals. There will be no repeat result in ’87 (the Celts defeated the Houston Rockets to win again in 1986), when Magic Johnson won the rubber series against Larry Bird. And there will definitely be no coup de grace in 1988, which cemented the Lakers as the team of the ’80s.
It’s an unfitting end to a good series (with an excellent theme song) with impressive casting,...

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson and her husband, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, had a little getaway recently as the days of summer are nearing an end.
Sam, 56, took to Instagram to share a series of photos of her and her husband Aaron, 33, on their end-of-summer vacation. One image has the couple standing on opposing sides of a palm tree. Two other shots gave much closer views of the pair, with a barefoot Sam standing next to a sitting, topless Aaron.
“Summer romance,” Sam captioned the post.
Sam and Aaron have been married since 2012, four years after their fateful meetup at a film audition for Nowhere Boy, which Sam was directing. Aaron landed the role of a young John Lennon, paving the way to the beginning of their romance, and proposed to Sam the following year.
Although they didn’t get married until three years into their engagement, they did welcome two kids before tying the knot.

In addition to a remake of his own movie The Killer, action auteur John Woo will also return with the upcoming Silent Night, which has received its official MPA rating this week.
Director John Woo’s Silent Night has been rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence, drug use and some language.”
From Capstone Studios and Thunder Road Films, Silent Night stars Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad) alongside Scott Mescudi (X), Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
In Silent Night, written by Robert Archer Lynn, “A grieving father enacts his long-awaited revenge against a ruthless gang on Christmas Eve.”
Of particular note, the film is said to feature no dialogue. Yes, we realize the MPA rating lists “some language” as a reason for its “R” rating. And we are also very confused about that.
John Woo told Vulture, “Very interesting movie. The whole movie is without dialogue. It allowed me to...

The final episode of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," called "Hegemony", took place at a remote human colony called Parnassus Beta and involved a violent border dispute between the U.S.S. Enterprise and a species of evil reptiles called the Gorn. The colony is on a contested planet, and the Gorn are eager to exterminate the human "pests." The Enterprise charges to the rescue, and the bulk of the episode is action sequences, starship battles, and hand-to-hand combat. Spock (Ethan Peck) murders a Gorn by stabbing it in the skull. On a mere visceral level, it's terribly exciting.
The episode ends with the Enterprise crew back on board the ship after a stressful conflict below. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has received orders from Starfleet Command to leave the colony behind and get out of the Gorn's way. The order came, however, right when Pike received...

Lily Gladstone got very candid about how she feels about Yellowstone.
In an interview with Vulture conducted ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Killers of the Flower Moon star opened up about how being a working actor means not always having the freedom to pick and choose material — especially if it’s slim pickings.
Over the course of her career, the actress has worked on projects by Native and non-Native writers. One project by a non-Native artist that she has a strong opinion on is Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, Paramount’s series which portrays Native Americans, calling it “delusional” and “deplorable.”
“No offense to the Native talent in that,” she added. “I auditioned several times. That’s what we had.”
The Reservation Dogs actress also explained in the profile that she thinks about which stories of Indigenous people get told and who gets to tell them, noting it can be a “double-edged sword.

Lily Gladstone will soon be seen in the hugely anticipated “Killers of the Flower Moon”, starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the latest film from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese.
In a new interview with Vulture, the Native American actress — her heritage is Blackfeet and Nimíipuu — shared her unvarnished opinion the mythologized depiction of the American west “Yellowstone”.
“Delusional! Deplorable!” declared Gladstone, who was raised in Montana, where “Yellowstone” is shot.

Lily Gladstone is condemning Hollywood’s glorification of the American West in film and television, particularly the Kevin Costner-led series “Yellowstone.”
“Delusional! Deplorable!” Gladstone told Vulture of Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama.
“Yellowstone” and its spinoff series “1883” and “1923” follow different generations of the Dutton family and their cattle ranch in Montana. Creator Sheridan has defended “Yellowstone” multiple times in the past from critics who referred to the series as “anti-woke” or a “red-state show.”
While Gladstone does criticize the mythologized portrayal of the West in “Yellowstone,” the “Killers of the Flower Moon” star does not fault any of the Native American actors for appearing on the show, adding, “No offense to the Native talent in that. I auditioned several times. That’s what we had.”

Alone isn’t quite like any other reality show. The History Channel series premiered in 2015 and wrapped up its 10th season in August 2023. Each season follows a group of contestants who must survive on their own in the wild for as long as they can. The person who lasts the longest wins $500,000.
Needless to say, competing on Alone requires certain skills. You won’t make it far if you don’t know how to find food and start a fire. Cast members also need a particular personality. Aside from occasional med checks, contestants are completely isolated from other people. Anyone who can’t handle long stretches of time with no human interaction is likely to tap out early. So, how do producers find people who are cut out for the intense experience? Casting Alone is a complicated process.

Lily Gladstone is grateful for the “great rewrite” of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Originally centered around FBI agent Tom White with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to the role, the film pivoted amid the pandemic. The script, written by Eric Roth who adapted the film from David Grann’s non-fiction book, instead pivoted to focus on the Osage community and the murders that plagued the Oklahoma reservation at the turn of the century. DiCaprio instead took the role of Ernest, the husband of Lily Gladstone’s Mollie; Jesse Plemons was cast as White.
“It’s not a white-savior story,” Gladstone told Vulture of what “Killers of the Flower Moon” eventually became. “It’s the Osage saying, ‘Do something. Here’s money. Come help us.'”
Gladstone added that “you don’t say no to that offer” to star in a Scorsese film, but “there’s that double-edged sword...

"The Witcher" star MyAnna Buring was prepared for her character to die from day one. "I'd known that this would happen in season three from the very, very beginning," the actress told Insider in the wake of the Netflix show's heartbreaking third season conclusion. After all, the Aretuza headmistress and mother figure to Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) dies tragically near the end of Andrzej Sapkowski's "Time of Contempt," the book whose climax the adaptation has been hurling towards for some time now.
"Season one, I was very clear what would happen in season three, so I think when I first read the scene, I was quite pragmatic about it," Buring told the outlet. "I was like, 'Okay, that's the scene. That's how they've chosen to do it. Great. I understand. That's lovely.'" The scene in question is certainly more heartbreaking than its literary counterpart, given the warmth with which...

Ayo Edebiri is having quite the 2023. She started off the year winning the Independent Spirit Award for her performance on "The Bear" — aka the best show on television — and subsequently received her first Emmy nomination for it as well (results pending). She has a recurring role on "Abbott Elementary," the rare network sitcom to achieve broad popularity in many years. On the big screen, she gives vocal performances in two highly acclaimed animated films with "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," and she delivers a standout supporting turn in the mockumentary "Theater Camp." Capping it all off is her lead role in Emma Seligman's "Bottoms" opposite Rachel Sennott, which just so happens to be the funniest comedy in years. When I came upon her podcast "Iconography" back in 2019, I hoped for this kind of success for her, but it's rare when that manifestation becomes reality.

Unpopular best friends Pj and Josie start a high school fight club to get closer to the girls they have crushes on in the hopes of losing their virginities, but they soon realize they're in too deep when the most popular kids in school start molly-whopping each other in the name of self-defense. That's the synopsis of Emma Seligman's new film "Bottoms," starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. The teen comedy made waves during the SXSW film festival, and although only theatrically released in select cities, is already picking up crucial word of mouth from an often-overlooked demographic of movie-goers: yearning lesbians.

The "Riverdale" cast have seen the jokes, but they're not laughing. In an Aug. 15 interview with Vulture, the cast spoke about the rampant meme-ification of "Riverdale," and why the internet just can't seem to take the show seriously. "I think it's important to acknowledge that our show is made fun of a lot," Lili Reinhart said, referencing the clips she said are often "taken out of context" on social media at the actors' expense. "It's really not been easy to feel that you're the butt of a joke."
The general discourse seems to focus on the show's melodramatic script (who could forget the "epic highs and lows of high school football"?) as well as the plot, which strays further from reality with each season. Reinhart, however, made it clear that's all intentional. "When the absurdity of our show became a talking point, it was difficult," Reinhart said. "It is, 'What the f*ck?...

As Riverdale comes to a close after seven seasons, Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes are sharing their thoughts on The CW series constantly being mocked by fans on social media.
In an interview with Vulture, conducted before the actors strike, several castmembers looked back at their time on the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa-created show, seven years and 135 episodes later, including what they won’t miss about it. Reinhart proceeded to admit that it wasn’t easy knowing that “our show is made fun of a lot.”

Lili Reinhart is opening up about Riverdale coming to an end after seven seasons and giving her take on viral clips of the show that showcase the “absurdity” of the storylines.

“I think it’s important to acknowledge that our show is made fun of a lot,” Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty, tells Vulture in a far-ranging cast interview marking the show’s farewell after seven seasons. (The series finale airs Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 9/8c.) “People see clips taken out of context and are like, ‘What? I thought this was about teenagers.‘ And we thought so as well — in Season 1.”

With "The Witcher" season 3 coming to an end, Henry Cavill will bid adieu to the character of Geralt of Rivia. Five years ago, the actor lobbied for the lead role in Netflix's adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" book series, citing a love for the novels and the video games which they spawned. Since then, the "Man of Steel" star has dedicated himself to portraying the titular monster hunter, displaying his characteristic commitment by testing his physical limits and suffering some near career-ending injuries in the process.
By the time filming began on season 3, Cavill had basically become an unofficial stunt coordinator, not only performing all Geralt's action scenes himself, but helping design the choreography and generally demonstrating the innate drive to push himself that served him so well on previous projects like "Mission: Impossible — Fallout." That penchant for going above and beyond physically was mirrored...

Robbie Robertson found his faith and purpose on the radio. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, this child of jewelry-plating factory workers discovered rock-and-roll via the Am airwaves of Wkbw out of Buffalo, New York, and fell hard for the blues in the wee hours when Wlac deejay John R. blasted the 12-bar gospel into his bedroom from the far-off music mecca of Nashville, Tennessee. His path was set, and it brought him to rowdy rockabilly artist Ronnie Hawkins, who was impressed enough with a teenage Robertson's guitar acumen to bring him on as a member of his backing band The Hawks. In the early 1960s, Robertson formed a bond with singer/bassist Rick Danko, singer/pianist Richard Manuel, multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson, and singer-drummer Levon Helm.
It's here that these five, brilliantly talented rock-blues aficionados formed The Band.

Whether you love Netflix's take on "The Witcher" or just love to hate it, there's no denying that this season's major battle episode was pretty epic. In episode six of season 3, the coup at Aretuza quickly transformed into an all-out fight, with bodies exploding and a ring of fire raining down upon both sides -- not to mention a final confrontation that left our titular witcher in bad shape. In the midst of all the chaos, though, the show makes time for a brief, effortlessly cool moment: the death of Rience (Sam Woolf).
Rience was been positioned as a shadowy, dangerous schemer since day one. He was a fire mage with a stereotypical villain scar on his face who spent much of the series hot on Ciri's (Freya Allan) trail. But when he finally got the chance to face off against her, it was a short-lived moment that was...

This article contains spoilers for "The Righteous Gemstones" season 3 finale.
I'm not a religious person, but if Heaven is real, I hope it looks like the Y2K orgy with several women, Walton Goggins, Shea Whigham, and a man who may or may not be Gene Hackman from the cold open of the season 3 finale of "The Righteous Gemstones." Now that your eyes have retracted back into your skull after reading that sentence, let me explain. "The Righteous Gemstones" has quietly existed as the prodigal son of HBO since 2019, performing a perfect balancing act between satirical blasphemy, the art of ribaldry, and a southern-fried helping of empathy. Centering a show in the already nonsensical world of mega-church televangelism has allowed the series to convincingly present characters with Goliath-sized personalities, but few are as memorable (or memeable) as Walton Goggins' Uncle Baby Billy Freeman.

If the Trinity Test was the most historic moment of the 20th century, surely the bombshell box office success that was "Barbenheimer" is the 21st-century equivalent. Ok, maybe not. But "Barbenheimer" did feel somewhat culturally historic in the way it captured our collective attention — and our money. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" brought in an outrageous $162 million on its opening weekend while Christopher Nolan managed to hold his own with "Oppenheimer" making an impressive $82 million without the aid of brand recognition or existing IP.
Still, Nolan had the benefit of telling the story of a man the director has been on record as calling the most important figure in history. On July 16, 1945, J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of physicists watched as their efforts to harness the power of Quantum physics lead to the first test of the most destructive weapon ever created. That famous Trinity Test was, as "Oppenheimer" shows,...

While the Trinity Test is certainly the centerpiece of Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic “Oppenheimer,” there’s a moment that follows the detonation of the nuclear bomb that echoes the test sequence in disturbing ways. Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer addresses residents of Los Alamos to inform them that the bomb has successfully been dropped on Hiroshima, but the sound of the roaring crowd drops out, only to return moments later – just like the delayed sound of the bomb blast during the Trinity Test.
Nolan, who wrote and directed the film, said the parallels between the two sequences are certainly intentional.
“The whole film is about consequences,” Nolan told Vulture. “The delayed onset of consequences that people often forget — the film is full of different representations of that. Some visceral, some more narrative.”
