Alexandra Chang was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. She grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts
and attended Wellesley College and also attended La Nouvelle Sorbonne (University
of Paris-III at Censier). She later attended grad school at NYU for Aesthetics. Her partner is historian Matthew Hockenos.
She worked as an Associate Producer and Assistant Editor at the 'Simon & Goodman Picture Company', working on films for PBS, National Geographic and HBO Family under producers Kirk Simon and Karen Goodman. Her writing appeared in magazines and newspapers such as amNew York, Chicago Tribune, Time Out New York, Time, Boston Globe, Budget Travel, among others. She became the Features Editor at amNew York, the New York City free daily, as well as the managing editor of Art Asia Pacific magazine for its relaunch from Australia to New York.
She also developed oral histories about the Asian American arts movement with Instep Productions. She co-founded the artist collective Dream So Much along with her brother, working with artists Kenji Hirata, Matzu-MTP, Sandro Tchikovani, James Marshall, among others. She also has curated several exhibitions including with artists ON megumi Akiyoshi, David Diao, Kenji Hirata, Kaws, Shin il Kim, Matzu-MTP, Leah Raintree, and Martin Wong, Ming Fay, etc. She has written several art monographs and texts including about artists David Diao, Jose Parla, Saya Woolfalk, and Tomokazu Matsuyama among others and contributed to the Oxford University Press Grove Encyclopedia of American Art. She is the author of the book Envisioning Diaspora: Asian American Visual Arts Collectives (Timezone 8 Limited) and the editor of Circles and Circuits: Chinese Caribbean Art (Duke University Press).
She is an electric and acoustic harpist focusing on improvisation. She is the electric harpist for the Rock City Falls Trio and was awarded a Saratoga Arts Community Grant for EQUILIBRIUM. a collaborative improv - feat. harp, double bass, drums and live painting. She is co-director of the nonprofit Improv Spaces with percussionist Adam Forman.
She was the Curator for Special Projects and Director of Global Arts Programs at the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. She is now Associate Professor of Practice at the Art, Culture, and Media Department at Rutgers University-Newark, Interim Associate Director of the Price Institute, and Associate Director of the American Studies Program.
