When “The Real Mo Farah,” a documentary about the Olympic gold-winning athlete, aired on the BBC in the U.K. last month, it was front page news.
The feature doc, which had been kept so tightly under wraps even some of those working on it didn’t know exactly what it contained, revealed that the story Farah had repeatedly told about his upbringing – on talk shows and in his published autobiography – was a lie. In fact, his real name was Hussein Abdi Kahin and at 9 years old he was torn from his family and trafficked by neighbors from Somaliland to Britain to work, he says, in indentured servitude.
A co-production between the BBC, Atomized Studios and Red Bull Studios, “The Real Mo Farah” dominated U.K. headlines the week it came out, receiving numerous accolades for both Farah, who had chosen to tell his story at risk of potentially losing...

Red Bull Studios (Rbs), one of the producers behind the electrifying documentary “The Real Mo Farah,” have set their next project, titled “The Moment: How Sports Changed the World,” Variety can exclusively reveal.
Directed by Tom Jennings of 1895 Films, “The Moment” is a feature doc that explores the lasting repercussions of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which was controversially held in South Africa at the tail end of apartheid. At the time, the South African national team (nicknamed the Springboks) had only one Black player – Chester Williams – but ended up winning the tournament in a moment that united the country (pictured above is Mandela congratulating Springbok captain François Pienaar following their win).
“The well-known story is that Nelson Mandela really took a risk with [hosting the Rugby World Cup in 1995] because the Springboks were seen as symbolic of apartheid and they were loathed in South Africa outside of the white nationals,” Red Bull Studios’ global head, Bernadette McDaid,...

Mo Farah is one of the U.K.’s greatest athletes, having won 10 gold medals — four at the Olympics and six at the World Championships — in long-distance running. He has been knighted by the Queen and won countless awards, including BBC Sports’ Personality of the Year.
But now, the sporting superstar has rocked the country once again with a new documentary, “The Real Mo Farah,” which airs Wednesday (July 13) on BBC One.
In the documentary, he reveals his real name is not, in fact, Mohamed Farah, but rather Hussein Abdi Kahin. As a 9-year-old, he was trafficked to the U.K. from Somaliland via a false passport and forced to work in domestic servitude for the Somali strangers who brought him there.
By the time Farah finally escaped it didn’t occur to anyone to call him by his birth name. As he details in the documentary, when he eventually...

A Warner Bros. executive has called for more scripts written by women writers to help correct the film industry’s gender imbalance.
Speaking on a panel at the Toronto International Film Festival about financing female-led features, Niija Kuykendall, VP of production at Warner Bros Pictures, said: “I don’t get a lot of material come my way from women.
“There needs to be more agents and managers who are continuously putting script from female writers in front of me.”
Pointing to positive change, Kuykendall highlighted an increase in females running the show on Warner Brothers projects such as Denise Di Novi’s upcoming directorial debut Unforgettable - a film directed, produced, co-written and starring women.
She also referred to Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, continuing: “It’s not perfect by any means, but change is happening. There does seems to be a greater landscape of female filmmakers getting involved on bigger films.”

YouTube creators now have a new tool to help them figure out just how much they deserve to be paid from brands. After six weeks in beta, the digital influence tool and analytics resource Social Bluebook launched on July 21, 2015, with former Maker Studios executive Chad Sahley leading the firm.
The entire idea behind Social Bluebook, whose name refers to valuation and standards systems, is to give creators the power of determining their own bottom-line monetary worth, without relying on a middle-man negotiator or general channel data. The tool seeks to answer questions such as “What is my brand value or digital worth?” and “How much should I charge for brand deals?”
Essentially, Social Bluebook empowers YouTube, Vine, and Instagram creators’ negotiating rights and brand deals by using algorithms to reveal their total valuation. Bluebook determines these numbers based on digital reach, engagement, and social profiles entered by the tool’s users upon registration.

Morgan Freeman's series Through the Wormhole may have gained pop-culture traction last year when the famously satin-voiced actor sucked down helium, but season 2 of the Science Channel show isn't afraid to get serious.
And, despite the signature twinkle in Freeman's eyes during the opening moments of the season's first episode, "Are We Bigots?" – which People has obtained exclusively – the premiere is unflinching in its acknowledgment of people's ingrained biases.
Never was the relevance of the topic more clear than, during the episode's development, when the country erupted over the shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri,...

We first developed a crush on the Science Channel when it started replaying Firefly episodes. We became completely smitten when they sponsored the Firefly tenth anniversary panel at Comic-Con, and when we learned about the 10th anniversary special Firefly: Browncoats Unite (which you hopefully watched last night, it was So Shiny – if not, look for the replays) we knew we were fully in love.
When we learned that Science Channel had won the syndication rights to our beloved Fringe, we knew that this was not just a fling but a long-term relationship. And Science Channel is not taking us for granted but is proving its commitment to us, the geek community, by beginning its replay with not just one hour a week, but Three Hours a week, on Tuesdays (filling our previously sci-fi-less day!) And replaying the rest of the entire first season in a post-Thanksgiving marathon!

At 10pm on Sunday, November 11, Science Channel will premiere its “Firefly” reunion special. Like the Joss Whedon series it celebrates, “Firefly: Browncoats Unite” is a labor of love.
“I’m a huge fan of “Firefly” myself,” says Bernadette McDaid, Science’s VP of production and executive producer of the special. “It was originally conceived as a bit of a birthday present for me.”
But McDaid isn’t the only Browncoat in her office: Everyone involved with the 60-minute special is passionate about the series. “Every frame is crafted with love, across the board,” McDaid says. “It’s been an incredibly uplifting and inspirational experience to make this film and to be working with so many people who believe in it.”
