Exclusive: Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) has joined the cast of Kurt Sutter’s new Netflix series The Abandons in a recurring role, sources close to production tell Deadline. Cardenas’ casting reunites him with Sutter, the co-creator of the Sons of Anarchy spinoff series Mayans M.C., in which Cardenas starred in the series regular role of Angel Reyes across the show’s 5 seasons.
Gillian Anderson, Lena Headey, Lucas Till, Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Aisling Franciosi and Natalia del Riego also star.
Created and executive produced by Sutter, who also serves as showrunner, The Abandons follows a group of diverse, outlier families pursuing their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, as a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back.

FX’s “Mayans M.C.” is a tough, violent, and unflinching portrait of a Southern California motorcycle club fighting a bloody war to protect its territory. Yet it’s also a show filled with moments of subtlety and tenderness, in which the repercussions of violence for both the victim and the perpetrator are thoughtfully and powerfully considered. The balance between the harsh and the poignant that characterizes the show has been there from the beginning, but since Elgin James took over as sole showrunner in Season 3, the show has grown steadily deeper and more visceral, reaching its artistic peak in its fifth and final season, which ends July 19.
One of the key contributors to the evolution of the series’ tone and visual style is director of photography Vanessa Joy Smith, who was a camera operator on the first two seasons and then stepped into the role of cinematographer for the remainder of the show’s run.

Fans of Mayans Mc should brace themselves for an explosive season 5, as the show ramps up towards its climactic finale. Last season was marked by significant chaos and upheaval, and things between Ez Reyes (Jd Pardo) and his brother, Angel Reyes (Clayton Cardenas), are about to get even more riveting.
With Ez now sitting at the head of the table after taking the reins from Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), Mayans Mc star Sarah Bolger believes a scene from season 4 marked a “palpable change in the tone of show” as we head into season 5.
