The Television Academy’s board of governors has voted vice chairman Frank Scherma to become its new chairman and CEO, a post he will take over from the outgoing Hayma Washington. The election was held Thursday night at a board meeting at which the TV Academy’s annual officer elections were also held.
Scherma, the president of RadicalMedia whose producer credits include music documentaries, Errol Morris’ The Fog of War, Broadway’s Shrek the Musical and IFC TV’s Stan Against Evil, was the lone candidate to step forward by the deadline when Washington said in October he would not seek a second term. Washington was the first African-American leader in the organization’s 70-year history.
The incoming chairman will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2019. Additional incoming officers elected Thursday include Steve Venezia, Vice Chair; Tim Gibbons, Second Vice Chair; Sharon Lieblein, Secretary; Allison Binder, Treasurer; and Mitch Waldow,...

Welcome to your Tuesday morning television briefing. Following the departure of Maura Tierney from the cast of NBC's Parenthood, producers have reportedly approached Helen Hunt about replacing Tierney on the Jason Katims-executive produced drama series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hunt "is said to be considering the offer, which would mark her return to series television and to NBC, where she starred on the comedy Mad About You for seven years before segueing into features." (Hollywood Reporter) Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Denis O'Hare (Brothers & Sisters) has been cast as a series regular next season on HBO's True Blood, where he will play the Vampire King of Mississippi. (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files) (For more on Season Three of True Blood, you can read my exclusive one-on-one interview with Alan Ball here.) Despite rumors to the contrary, the Futon Critic is reporting that ABC has not yet canceled...

It seems that ABC might be just as confused about the future of Defying Gravity as the rest of us are. Yesterday TVOvermind reported that Defying Gravity had been canceled. Although no official announcement from ABC had been made, it seemed clear by ABC's actions, and the show's ratings, on what had happened, and many other sites also reported the cancelation (we did mention that nothing official had been announced, by the way). After publishing our article I personally attempted to get in touch with the show's publicist at ABC for a confirmation and some answers to our questions. While I didn't receive a response, it seems that The Futon Critic did, as they posted the below news article this evening.
Los Angeles (thefutoncritic.com) — Let the speculation end: ABC's "Defying Gravity" is still very much alive.

Despite taking low number of audience each week, "Defying Gravity" will still escape from being cut. The show's publicist, Nicole Marostica, issued a statement that ABC is not giving up on the show and is still figuring out a time slot to air the last 5 episodes of season 1. Marostica didn't give any indication though on when roughly the show will return on screen.
The speculation that the show is canceled after only eight episodes was based on the fact that a preview for next week was not given at the end of the September 13 episode. Plus, the show has been absorbing only 2.5 million viewers in average since the third episode. The only reason that ABC puts the show in vacuum apparently is because it started the summer season late and didn't have the time to air all the 13 episodes.
"Brothers & Sisters" retains its September 27 premiere at 10/9c slot. Meanwhile, for this coming Sunday,...
