He was the governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015. He was the mayor of Baltimore, Maryland from 1999 to 2007. He was a councilman on the Baltimore City Council representing the 3rd district from 1991 to 1999.

Frontman for the Irish rock band "O'Malley's March." The band has released three albums ("Celtic Fury," "The Boys March at Dawn," and "Wait for Me"). Though it is predominantly a local band, the band has played in Dublin in 2004 and at the White House in 2012.

Wife is Baltimore District Court Judge Catherine (Katie) Curran O'Malley.
Father-in-law is Maryland's Attorney General Joseph Curran.
