Hulu cements its status as this year’s much-needed rom-com Mvp with director/co-writer Clea Duvall’s Happiest Season, the streamer’s Christmas rom-com-dram starring Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, and Aubrey Plaza. After the smashing success of its Groundhog Day-at-a-desert-wedding summer hit Palm Springs, Hulu became the talk of Film Twitter with its starry, splashy, Sony-produced holiday love story. And for good reason.
Per Slate, Happiest Season marks a major moment in movie history: it is apparently the first major studio-backed romantic comedy centered around a queer couple. It is a trailblazing enterprise, but more importantly it’s just quality holiday fare.
Happiest Season is a surprisingly affecting tale of family, secrets and lies, all the best ingredients in any good festive jaunt. Following an adorable pre-credits establishing montage that tracks the inception and gestation of their relationship in illustrated picture book form, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette journalist Harper Caldwell (Davis...

Clea DuVall loves Christmas movies, but she never saw herself reflected in them. DuVall, who is gay and as both an actress and a director has frequently talked about the importance of LGBT portrayals throughout her career, decided to change that, and wrote and directed “Happiest Season” so she could see her experiences reflected in holiday rom-coms.
“In a lot of ways, this movie is autobiographical just in that I’ve been both characters at different times in this movie,” DuVall told TheWrap. “And being able to tell a universal story like going home for Christmas through a unique lens just seemed like a really great opportunity to tell a story — to tell a story which we’ve heard in a different way.”

Once in a while a holiday movie comes along that fits the tone of the country and what it wants from a Christmas flick.
Hulu is broadcasting Happiest Season and besides having a stellar cast, it has a strong message for today’s day and age.
After all, there is a legion of folks who still have parents that may not be thrilled that they seek to come out of the closet.
Family and the pressures of the holidays is nothing new to the cinematic landscape. But what is provided in writer-director Clea DuVall’s joyous journey is wildly unique and will pull heartstrings and emit hilarity as well.
Happiest Season stars Kristen Stewart as Abby and Mackenzie Davis as Harper. The pair have been dating for almost a year and are getting more and more serious as the calendar whips by—currently, they are living together.

(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t watched “Happiest Season.”)
Despite starring in one of the most popular heterosexual relationships on screen (“Twilight”), openly bisexual actor Kristen Stewart said she felt the need to be a part of the first LGBTQ Christmas rom-com movie released by a major studio, called “Happiest Season.”
“Not only is it very, very funny, [but] it feels really lived-in and reflective of something really familiar to me and a lot of people that has not been evident in really big commercial rom-com type movies,” Stewart told TheWrap. “The movie really broadcast how everyone’s coming-out story is totally theirs and individual, and there are so many different versions of that story. We’ve progressed a lot — there are a lot of people that don’t live in fear and anxiety — but there are so many people that do. If this movie allows them...

It’s Christmas! On Hulu, at least. The romantic holiday comedy Happiest Season — which premieres on the streamer this week — stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as Abby and Harper, respectively, a loving queer couple who’ve reached the “meet the parents” checkpoint in their relationship. This is a slightly dicier prospect for queer couples than for their straight peers, in that it comes with certain preliminary hurdles — not only “Hey mom and dad, I’m bringing someone home,” but also, “Hey mom and dad: I’m gay.” One ideally...

In the first trailer for “Happiest Season,” Abby (Kristen Stewart) plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) after she meets her family at their traditional Christmas dinner, only to realize they don’t even know their daughter is gay.
So what does Harper end up calling Abby when they arrive? Her roommate/orphan? Who is also straight? “Have they ever met a lesbian?” “Schitt’s Creek” star Daniel Levy asks in the trailer.
Clea DuVall’s film puts a comedic, rom-com, holiday spin on a tough coming-out moment for LGBTQ couples. Hulu describes “Happiest Season” as “a holiday romantic comedy that hilariously captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.”
“Do you know how painful it’s been to see the person that I love hide me?” Abby asks Harper in the trailer, to which she responds,...

Hulu is decking the halls for “Happiest Season,” a rare mainstream holiday comedy centered on two women in love.
The streamer has picked up domestic distribution rights to the Clea DuVall-directed film. Original distributor and co-financier Sony Pictures will retain rights in Canada and the rest of the world.
The move is unsurprising as the coronavirus pandemic leaves many American movie theaters shuttered. The film, led by Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis, will now premiere as a Hulu Original on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
“This holiday season — more than any other — we could all use a little happiness. It was essential to Sony Pictures and to the filmmakers that Clea’s marvelous and fresh holiday-themed romantic comedy come out when the lights are on the trees,” said Nicole Brown, president of TriStar Pictures. “We are excited that Hulu is geared up to make this happen in the U.S. and grateful...
